Thanks for the video, I am getting ready to do my Wife's 2019 jcw front brakes. This helped a ton and for real gave me the confidence that I can do it specially with the big calipers. Thanks so much!
Also to make it easier to get to caliper bolts, say your working on LF. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left. It will give you more room to work and access to caliper bolts.
This jobs takes half an hour if you just use a longer punch to remove only the two pins (One minute). Then use a big flat screwdriver between the disk and the old pads to push the piston inside (another minute). Then use an olfa knife to separate the pads from the round washers that are between the piston and the pads. If you push gently the olfa blade between the pads and the washers, they will separate from the pads and stay in the piston (another minute). Once it is done, just pull out the two pads, clean the beds of the pads on the caliper with the flat screwdriver to remove the dirt (another minute). Then put the new pads in the slot (put the brake grease first where needed) then put the stainless piece, then slide the lower pin, gently knock it inside with a small hammer and a punch), then push the upper part of the stainless plate with your finger in order to remove the pressure when you slide the upper pin. knock the pin in place (another minute or two). On the driver side, you will have to unclip the sensor and replace it (you will need an 8 mm socket to remove one screw and a flat screwdriver to remove a pins that keep the liner in place in order to acces the other end of the sensor cable) This should take two minutes. Then put the tires back, pump the brake, start the car, reset the braker wear sensor message and your are done. You absolutely don't need to remove the caliper unless the disk are damage or needs to be replace. Thank you for your video, it was a great start and very usefull for reseting the brake sensor message in the dash!
Before removing pads, after taking pins out. Use pliers to squeeze brake pads back to push caliper pistons in. Then you will be able to slide pads out easy and its easier to compress pistons that way. Use a longer punch to remove pins.
Really helpful video thanks. Where did you buy the pad holder discs from I can’t find them anywhere? I’m resorting to using the old ones with some high temperature adhesive as I get a clunk noise when braking first time in reverse or drive.
Once you the the pins out you can use a large flat head screw driver to apply pressure between the old pad and the rotor. This will compress the pistons then the pads will come right out.
I have a old mercedes that uses the exact same set up on the rear to get the brake pads out you are supposed to use a pry bar and gently apply pressure to the brake pad that pushes up against the piston the piston eventually goes all the way in and removal and install of the pads gets super easy 👍
Never seen friction pads like the part you missed,or at least i think they were? Never saw if you removed the brake fluid filler cap to make retracting the pistons easier?
What about rotor resurfacing? I've never done a brake job where I didn't have both new pads and fresh rotor surface, to which I promptly bedded the pads and rotors in to each other. Although those don't look all that scored. I get 50K-60K on front pads and my rotors are usually pretty scored when I do the job.
Have you looked into one of those garage floor powered scissor lifts that lays on the garage floor and goes underneath your car and lifts it from the bottom..theyre specially made for low sports cars but do you know what I'm talking about? Just so you don't have to buy big expensive garage lifts and hoists. Even tho the scissor lift could be $1,000-$2,000 I think they're worth the money (tax season always comes 👌👍) lmao. It would be cool if it allows you to keep your car off the ground all winter when your storing it as well..
@@normalguysupercar yea instead of your process of backing the car on ramps, jacking it up, and then jackstands underneath eveytime, I'm sure you don't mind doing that but those jack stands get fishy sometimes. As I commented on your last video when you were playing mechanic and changing rear pads stop using the c-clamp!!!!!! C-clamps are a great way to trigger the abs light and ruin a abs unit. You should not be beating brake pads out with a hammer!!! Take a simple flat head screwdriver and SLOWLY pry between the rotor and pad from the top which will relieve the pressure on the pads and the pads would of slide right out after pistons were depressed back. I suggest opening a bleeder while depressing pistons if you insist on using c-clamp so no damage can be done to abs.
