  • Like the Red Sox and Yankees, Coke and Pepsi, and McDonald's and Burger King, the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot are the fiercest of competitors. We spent a week testing these SUVs, and we're gonna tell you which you should spend your money on. The 2017 Pilot and 2017 Highlander we tested were surprisingly similar: They each earned the same top safety scores from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety; they both had the same fuel economy at 22 mpg combined, and the price was just $144 different.

    I own both these cars a 2017 Highlander Limited and a 2017 Pilot Elite. They both have their ups and downs but my personal favorite is the Pilot
    The Highlander offers better fuel economy and better styling but some materials inside feel cheap and the infotainment feels out dated and aftermarket like also no CarPlay
    The Pilot has a smoother ride and noise levels are quieter, but the nine speed button shifter is awful sometimes it doesn’t shift in the right gear u have to click it a few times and the auto start system is annoying and very noticeable. Also the lack of volume and tuning knobs becomes frustrating when trying to yell at kids in the back
    The Pilot has more of the Family Friendly features over the Highlander. Overall they are both great choices but my favorite out of the 2 would be the Pilot for its practical third row and more features. Hope this helps anyone!

      shmbbrkr actually I still have my 2006 Honda Odyssey Touring van and it has never ever failed me once. I never ever brought it to the dealer for an unexpected visit. It never broke it kept running! She still runs beautifully. However, my 03 Camry I sold 2 years ago the trans failed and they totaled the car for some odd reason so I’m not too sure if Toyota is the place to be

    Exactly the opposite of a couple of other reviews I have seen. As with any vehicle, buy what fits your need & taste. The Highlander was the vehicle that looked much better and had the best driver comfort, ride & performance, so I bought it because I really didn't want/need a third row anyway. Would have eliminated it if I could have. Put it down, leave it down & you have plenty of cargo room & a fantastic vehicle.

      I owned Honda's for years, got a toyota a couple years back, I wish I never did! Toyota is outdated, cheap materials and cheap parts, a lot of road noise, not nearly as comfortable as a Honda. The glass all around seems thin and cheap, windshield cracks very easy, other people I know have their windshield cracked also. Toyota needs to step it up, their cars are outdated and garbage.

    So the Highlander wins in front seats comfort, powertrain performance, it also looks better.. it sacrifices some back room because of smaller size, which is actually desirable for many who also drive it in the city... I would say it's the clear winner.

    The Toyota Highlander has a better (because it more traditional) dashboard layout and controls .. but the Highlander needs a higher roof.. Needs to be taller (by about 2 inches) which would give the Highlander more headroom making it more comfortable (with better visibility). The Pilot has a bad dashboard/controls (because its not traditional), but it is larger and taller, which is more comfortable. Oh, and Honda get rid of the push button shifter and go back to a good old regular traditional shifter.

    I have driven all trims of both vehicles and chose the Highlander, because it is easier to drive. The Pilot Touring had a 9 speed transmission that resisted acceleration. The 6 speed in the Pilot EX was not too much better, but the sound system was way worse than Touring's. I ultimately went with Highlander Hybrid XLE. The torque delivery from the hybrid powertrain is buttery smooth both in the city and on highways. That's my recommendation.
    If you need the extra seating room, then Pilot is your vehicle. It drives like a minivan without looking like one. It's a good choice for families.

    • @squidusn71
      @squidusn71 6 лет назад +1

      Mightz Of Glory did you have Econ mode in the on position when you drove the Pilot? If it's off the Pilot is very quick and responsive. The difference is night and day. If econ mode is on, there's a hesitation at take off then feels like you're towing something. That's what you experienced. Econ is for better mpg in case you didn't know. Good luck on the Highlander. It was my first choice until I got into the 3rd row or even the driver seat. The Pilot is huge in comparison and eventually settled for the Touring model. The 9spd is buttery smooth and no issue in 13 months of ownership.

      @@squidusn71 hey I'm looking at buying a used 16' pilot with the 9sp with 77k miles. How has the pilot held up for you?

    • @squidusn71
      @squidusn71 Год назад +1

      @everbeenzen We still have it and drive the same since it's new. It's now 6+ yrs old with the factory battery still in it. The 9 speed is more reliable than the 6 speed, but it's more expensive to maintain. The only repair I've done was the brakes.
      My advice is to make sure that the 9 speed transmission has been serviced. I believe its first scheduled service was at 50 or 60k miles. It isn't a DYI service because a tech has to monitor fluid temp for a proper fluid level since it doesn't have a dip stick. The OEM rotors are trash, so stay away from them and get the best that you can get at your local parts store with matching pads in case it needs changing. If it was serviced properly, I don't foresee any issue for another 70k miles.

    • @everbeenzen
      @everbeenzen Год назад

      @@squidusn71 thank you for replying that helps alot. I was pretty hesitant because when test driving it seems 1st gear is geared really low and it doesn't switch as fast at I'd like to 2nd, you can really feel it although I don't think I let the transmission warm up enough.

    Just last week i visited a local Honda dealer and i was appalled by Hondas built quality. Panel gaps are ridiculous and inconsistent. The front passenger door had a problem that was causing it to rub against the fender when opening and the paint already started coming off in that spot. Also the paint was very weak and brittle, i was able to scratch it with a fingernail. I know this isn't indicative of the built quality and reliability and some may consider it cosmetic but i think i'll drive my first-gen Pilot till the wheels fall off and then get a Lexus or a Highlander.

Dealing with the Pilot 9spd on a daily basis is a no go. Recommend anyone considering the upper trim Honda Pilot take an 8hr test drive or rent one for the day. Check nhtsa, Edmunds and other customer reviews on the Honda Pilot 9spd. Include Acura and Jeep Cherokee equipped with the transmission. Have you not heard about the update to the 9spd quite some time ago which resolved the issue with gear hunting? I have not heard about any issues from legitimate consumers with the updated 9spd computer. I test drove one a couple weeks back and didn't notice a problem. My friend has an Elite with over 30,000 miles and no concerns yet. They love it!

      Grant Butler no amount of lipstick makes a pig pretty. Avoid the ZF 9spd transmission. It's problematic in every vehicle it's installed. I checked on the 2017 Pilot. There are nhtsa complaints. Also found complaints elsewhere. While you may be lucky with your unit. Doesn't mean everyone will. Honda sells a different Pilot with reliable transmission. Why take the risk? Get the reliable one. Skip the ZF 9spd transmission. Google it. Lots of info on it.

      Having sold many highlanders, and having recently traded for a 2017 Pilot, I have to say, I agree that Toyota's entertainment system feels dated and old, but I do not care for Honda's push button shifting system, and the person I traded the vehicle from said Apple play was good, but it was slow and jumpy at times. Overall, the Honda seems bigger, but I like the exterior design of the Highlander better, and generally think Toyota's have the quietest cabin's and smoothest driving vehicles.

    I’ve had my car since 2009. I haven’t experienced the luxuries that are in the newer cars these days (heated seats, backup camera, Apple Car play), aside from the occasional rental car. That being said, I like the Highlander. I don’t need a push button transmission, nor would I want one. Also I may be one of the few that would say this, but I don’t like Apple Car Play. Just give me Bluetooth and I’m good. Those heated seats though....🙌🏾

      Joe Landes they are both crossovers. Even the Traverse (one of the largest in the segment) is a crossover. An SUV is vehicle with a body on frame construction, such as a Tahoe. They are real trucks. The Pilot, Highlander, Traverse, Explorer, etc are not trucks. They are built with a unibody construction, or in other words, they are just large and tall sedans.

      Jacob shreve some of us need the huge space but don't want to opt for the minivan so it's a great thing to point out. I saw the highlander limited today and I'm not impressed mostly because of the HUGE lack of space on the 3rd row and even storage. There's just no space at all.

    • @peteg4328
      @peteg4328 6 лет назад +5

      Jacob lets put it this way, if you don't want monstrosity, should of just go with say CRV or RAV4. If you are looking at midsize 3 row crossover, it means you need the space, just accept it, Highlander just flat out sucks in space and failed. All car manufacturers make mistakes, although this is a major flaw for a 3 row crossover to have.

    Don’t bother buying a Honda Pilot. My pilot steering wheel leather started to peel at one corner and seat belt cover became loose at the holding clip. Dealership said all repair now must be approved by regional Honda rep and guess what they denied the warranty. Honda rep said steering wheel is a normal wear but my car barely has 30,000 miles. The seat belt cover they claimed we must have removed it and broken it when putting back together. I seriously don’t know where Honda came up with all the excuses. Do a search on the internet before you make a decision. Especially when a car manufacturer won’t stand behind their warranty.

  • @abirsanu

    My opinion I don't like the design of the Highlander bumper and radiator grill. Even the 2014-2015 versions look much better. It should stay a little bit classy(like the old highlander) on some design elements. Otherwise some new design elements are like the flavor of a bubble gum which doesn't last long enough and starts to be boring few years later, just like a cheap perfume. Also I like more the Pilot's central dashboard design, I think that Pilot's design will not look "wilted" over time if you'll drive it for more than 5 years.
    I started looking for a Pilot because I like more the overall design which is not perfect but looks good. Highlander looks smaller and the Pilot cargo space with the 3rd row in place is bigger than on the Highlander.
    From a Toyota owner.
