The Motion: This House Believes the United States is Institutionally Racist.
Annie Teriba is a student at The University of Oxford, studying history and politics.
The individual in this video is a competitive debater, and therefore the views expressed may not necessarily represent his/her beliefs.
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. It has been established for 189 years, aiming to promote debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.
It takes courage to get up in front of this many people to share an incoherent argument.

Really though. Checks off all the marks. Ad hominem, calling arguments ridiculous, disrespectful orator, narrative over facts
First minute in, and my jaw already hit the floor. She says "there are more black men in prison now than there were black men who were slaves in 1850 in US". Does this lady even take population growth into account?? In 1850, there were 23,191,876 people in US. Now there is an estimated 320,000,000 people. It's a shame that not enough people think critically when they listen to these "activists".
+Kyran Mcgowan I'm glad you picked that up instead of aimlessly criticising her argument. Moreover, she covered areas that need to be made aware of but, there are always two or more perspectives concerning the issue of racism.
"people like you"... THAT'S RACIST!!! But anyways, what's wrong with thinking critically and questioning what you hear? And even if there is institutionalized racism (which I'm not saying there is or isn't), the people trying to solve it should be using valid facts and figures about actual problems, and not spreading around nonsense like this
Well since you were unable to pick up on it, I was being ironic when I wrote that.
Also, I find your concept that "black people cannot be racist" to be the dumbest thing that I've heard in a while. According to the dictionary, the definition of racism is "poor treatment of, or violence against people because of their race" or "the belief that some races of people are better than others". Nowhere does it specify any of your mental gymnastics about requiring "power".
By your logic, if I called you a racial slur, it wouldn't be racist because I don't have any power over you (because A: I don't even know you, B: I probably don't even live in the same country as you, and C: I don't have any power over anybody but myself).
I think either you misread what I wrote, or have trouble with higher level thinking. If the latter, let me explain it to you again.
Population growth almost always follows with a growth of the prison population. That's just how things are. Because the population has grown so significantly since 1850, the small fraction of the US population that includes black people in prison has surpassed the number of slaves in 1850. No need to get all worked up and start writing in all caps and throwing around names.

These are insane arguments. It's nearly impossible to find a point that was not misrepresented.

She lost me as soon as she pushed privilege on the audience from her privileged podium in Oxford Union 🙈
Oh the lack of awareness and humility is almost painful to watch
Ikr
Foreal! Haha
Why? She'd still be correct. There's nothing about this that contradicts her beliefs at all. You realize that right?
Starts off by telling people they're privileged if they hope for a better more equitable tomorrow.
“This is the point: your intentions don’t matter. Whether you intend to be racist doesn’t make you not racist”.
This woman has either brainwashed by post-modern nonsense or is completely delusional.
Also, it’s a pity to see someone so appallingly inarticulate speaking at an Oxford Uni event.
If they had chosen someone smart, it would have been interesting.
They changed the goal posts on what Racism means. In her mind, Racism is just the existence of a caste system. Which makes everyone at the top of it (whoever that is perceived to be - depending on the argument at hand) racist. Pretty convenient I'd say.
Thanks affirmative action 👏👏 you’ve done it again 🤦♂️
I had to pause the video after she said that because I literally could not comprehend what would lead any rational human being to spew such idiocy unironically.
That's correct though? Your intentions don't matter. You can be a kind, smart person and still suffer from racial prejudice? How is that brainwashed? (Not gonna touch the postmodern part, because you clearly don't know what that is and are just parroting Jordan Peterson)
I think the truth is, you just don't want to let go of your outdated right wing worldview. The only worldview that actively tries to fight against tackling systemic racism. (something quantifiable and backed by all data that anyone can cite. Not detabable. It's factually real.)
@@IamBrixTM I appreciate your feedback. However you are mistaken on three significant points:
1: I dislike Jordan Peterson and don’t watch him. He is so egotistical as to have seemingly developed a messiah complex.
2: I do know about post-modern theory, having studied it - along with other social theories (eg, Classical and Psychosocial) - years ago at university
3: I’m not right wing. I despise both extremes, and am a centrist. The political pendulum serves nobody, least of all the electorate.
Intention does matter, imho, as does communication. Too many people are aggrieved victims nowadays. We are destroying mutual respect and communication, teaching people that every social interaction is based on a power dynamic, in which one party is “oppressed”.
I’d be interested in your definition of “factually real”, and if you understand the difference between fact and opinions. It seems to me, you have an opinion, as do I. We may both be able to cite facts in support of our opinions, but they will remain opinions.
This woman makes many uninformed generalizations.
Spot on
Are they uninformed or intentional? I think the latter.

I disagree, she is feeling a lot of emotions. One shouldn't judge on composure (hence why smooth talkers get away with so much) but rather on the content of her speech. And on that, I agree, she doesn't have a well founded argument.

This is more than just a word soup; it's an entire cuisine! Funny how she's says blacks haven't reaped the rewards of black (musical) culture but then leaves out R&B or how about Michael Jackson and countless of blacks in the charts today? If any they are over represented. This lady should teach Sophistry.
Yeah, every single musical artist was exploited in the early days of pop music. Even The Beatles were massively ripped off, which is why they started their own label. Tell Gene Vincent that the music industry was racist, poor bugger died a penniless drunk having been one of the pioneers of rock and roll. And I'm sick of everyone saying rock n roll was a black art form. It was a combination of the rhythm of black R&B music and the melodic quality of white country/folk music. Chuck Berry was a big country music fan.
Speaking of music, watch the Rock music awards and watch Black singers sweep most of the awards, don't fret if you miss the all-inclusive Rock awards, you can catch the Black music awards and watch the same people win all over again, is that Black Privilege ?
@@jeffb5785 The truth is whites are about the only race who have a small fringe group within with outside bias and that kinda makes life difficult for everyone. Racism is just wrong but outside bias is no different. In fact, it's the same.
This girl however is the perfect example of what Jordan Peterson would describe as being "ideologically possessed". Hate is coming out of her pores and no matter the evidence, she will keep moving the goal post. I would call her an extremist.
So she's allowed to ask questions and interupt but when people ask her she doesn't wanna know,

"I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of "interposition" and "nullification" -- one day right there in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers." Martin Luther King Jr "I Have A Dream" speech 1963
You gotta Malcom X quote too?
Stop using the one quote white people know and twisting Dr.King's ideology to fit your narrative "That dream I had that day has turned into a nightmare-- the old optimism was a superficial." He knew that white people like you, twisted his words into a deluded liberal colorblindness, that refuses to acknowledge issues that require looking at the issue through the lens of race. It's not enough to not be racist, you have to be anti-racist.
Dr.King would side with her, not with you. You wish to stick your head in the sand.
Lol does this woman think she's really oppressed? Does she really believe that insitiutional racism exist? When no laws and policies are in place today to discriminate blacks and how laws are set in place against discrimination and to help blacks excel. Insitiutional racism is not embedded in our schools hospitals banks etc for white supremacy and bring blacks down . Her ideology is literally Critical Race Theory the original curriculum in law books. She literally took everything she read in that theory (which is bullshit) and passed this as her own. She really needs to evaluate her life and realize how hyperbolic, unoriginal, and disingenuous her speech was. She needs to go over to Iraq and really feel what's oppression for women and the war. Instead of having the choice to go to college and reep affirmative action benefits to better her life. Have the right to marry who she wants and live her life as a free person. If she works hard enough she can be whatever she wants and have the option for the American dream. But she chooses to obsess all day about racism and create her own reality. She really is talking like segregation still exists. I just don't know how she truly believes what she's talking about. She is ungrateful and lives in a delusion that she's created where she lives in oppression. it seems her data is out dated and wrong statistics. People need to tell her how far our nation has come.
We had a black President and have more black people in Congress than ever but America has institutional racism. I make nearly 6 figures a year and have over that saved in stocks but America has institutional racism. Mike Tyson came from the hood and made over 700 million dollars knocking people out, Jay Z is from the hood and is in Forbes magazine as one of the richest rappers. That's just a small amount of successful black people who are famous not to mention myself who is not famous. This embrace of victimhood by black people is a good excuse for them to remain poor, blind and miserable. I don't agree with that ideology.
joseph guidry Not to mention her dumbass forgot to mention what’s happening in South Africa where institutionalized racism is ACTUALLY a thing. White people on farms there are getting killed, have their lands taken by the government, and live poor.
You're a moron. By you almost making six figures is nothing to be proud of. In fact, just making six figures is such a low marker of success. That's nothing to brag about.

The interviewer is racist, or maybe their interviewing skills need work!
No, victimhood doesn't correlate with the situation black folks find themselves in. There's no evidence of that, but there is evidence of the point she makes. The prison system comes from a broken criminal justice system riddled with racial bias. Again there's documented evidence of this.
If I was there, I would have been standing up every minute. Aside from that, my God girl! Learn how to express yourself in English properly. Like like like....uhm uhm uhm...right right right. 13 year olds talk like that. This is a formal debate!

If I believed in conspiracy theories, I'd wonder if she wasn't a plant, intended to discredit her side.
She makes statements about the achievements of black people not being recognized in a country that has a month devoted to the achievements of people with a dark skin colour.
The amount you have to ignore to believe what she says is astounding....
....you think black history month overpowers the long history of racism and the impact it has on people culturally/socially? What a ridiculous statement lol I don't even know how to respond to this.
She denied an interruption in her speech, but twice stood to speak during others'. I wonder if she was simply nervous and wanting not to break her stride. Alternately, was she opposed to granting equal interruptive power the same way she previously? To be fair, she showed patience in waiting to speak during their time.
Also, what a false equivalence that vigilantes and police officers are equally attributed to black death statistics in The States.
She said in a story in the Daily Express,
“I should have been more attentive to the person’s body language"
Like when she was struggling to get away you mean.
Oh. Dear. Incoherent.
If the war on drugs is ripping apart families, just dont do drugs in the first place
Drugs are intrinsically linked to poverty. That's like saying "don't be poor". You're excusing the US Government from tackling the effects of the problem rather than the source. Locking people up for doing drugs will not solve the problem, it does more to harm the problem as a matter of fact.
"Uuuuhh, like, ya know..." oh cool I've never seen a black, British valley girl before!!
Her complete dismissal of any alternative viewpoints is characteristic of the ideology of that political position. If you don't agree with every conclusion that is presented, you're not tolerated.
Lol - and she had the audacity to try and interrupt David Webb.
I lost her halfway. She keeps bringing up false misrepresented claims and logical fallacies. How was she even invited to speak at this debate?
Black Privilege, a person of her intellect would not be welcome to this forum if they were White.
So proud of myself. I made it a whole 5 minutes in before moving on to another speaker.
She has points of order for almost everyone else, yet can't let them have one...
Could you help me understand the debate rules here. I am American and ignorant of how it works. Is it interjection which is a matter of good faith etiquette?
@@Jamie-Russell-CME I'm American too. Never did formal debate. But that is my understanding. Her reasoning is insane 😳
She speaks from the heart not from the brain. Emotional speeches like her's promotes anger/hate. Don't listen to her.
Not a single thing she said was accurate, and most of her arguments were category fallacies (comparing apples to bananas) or if you went one step into her logic the causation wouldn't be racism but rather a lack of leadership/desirable qualities (honesty, politeness, responsibility etc.)
I'm only about one minute into this video and can already tell she is either willfully being deceptive, is self-deluded, or is seriously ill-informed. I suspect she has a victim complex because she knows it gives her privilege and power. Hard to argue that blacks are oppressed when this black woman got into Oxford.
"Hard to argue that blacks are opppressed when this black woman got into Oxford" How could you unironically say that and not be intellectually embarrassed? Do you think that means fuck all? It doesn't. You realize that don't you?
14 “like” completely out of context, much like a high schooler who has never taken speech would speak. 11 “right?” To try to affirm her opinion subconsciously. As well as several “um” that were all indicators of not being trained in public speaking. I would discount everything she said before about 8:00 as emotionally charged, because only after that did she seem to have semblance and speak from prepared material. Extremely inefficient if wanting to convince anyone of anything. I am literally disregarding the topic material, and purely noting the lack of public speaking ability.. astonishing.

Because institutions are comprised of individuals, and individuals aren't all going to have the same motives. They're just not. Relatedly, the motives of one set of people governing an institution may be completely different from those of their predecessors, yet the institution may well continue to operate in the exact same way.

@FEDSJ The OP was positing a relationship between providing value for others and riches, which obviously doesn't exist.
So I've seen both sides of this argument.
1. I think we need to realize that black opinions as Always don't have some monopolized ideas about what is right for the black community. I feel like the activist stance gets way more air play than a conservative one.
1. Leftist need to do a better job at stating facts better and giving credit to progress.
2. Conservatives need to do a better job at expressing some level of empathy, just a tad of emotion would help win people over.
3. I tend to lean libertarian and facts but not quite conservative black man who is atheist, and doesn't want a family. But I do recognize there are issues in the black of people being bigots or rascist. This is something that is getting called out more and more for legit reasons through phones and social media.
We all need to acknowledge that we have come a long way with more progress needed. But when I look at the landscape this institutional/systematic rascism talk only tends to be around black people, why haven't I seen Asians, Hispanics, etc... Part of this discussion? IF I had to bet my money I would venture to say that we tend to hold ourselves back a tad more. 🤷🏾♂️

Is this because they don't have anything to gain from being expected to fall behind so they can compensate for their lack of discipline with simple & overly repeated excuses?

And yet the cannot name one racist law
She might grow up and relinquish her distain were she to read Thomas Sowell's latest book, "Discriminations and Disparities" or watch David Webb's RUclips video, "The US is not Institutionally Racist"....
She doesn't realize that we are ALL the makers of our own destiny. Blaming others for our station in life equates to weakness, cowardous and poverty. The evidence is overwhelming.
Of course she rejects individual responsibility!! Let's chase ghosts!!!!
In her first point, she says it takes a lot of privilege to talk about fixing the problems experienced by people of other demographics (Blacks, Hispanics, and Native Americans) when you aren't part of those demographics. Well, I can't help but notice that she is English. So I think she should take her own advise, lay down her privilege, and stop talking about how to fix American problems if that's how she feels.

Unlike her, the opposition actually allows her to ask a question or make a comment during their speech. She probably knows how stupid her points are, that's why she's afraid of letting the real intellectuals say something. Just my opinion
Some people proactively making a living of "fighting racism" are actually the worst racists.
"Let's see how many misrepresented statistics I can find in the wild, to build a strawman and shift blame unto others for my inferiority complex"
Literally in her first sentence out of her mouth... she forsakes all intention to dialogue about substance, and demonstrates her focus is on purely on process. Her mistrust of anyone else having the dialogue. How can any meaningful discussion be had with someone like that? No concession, no ally will ever be enough for this mentality.
What utterly crap arguments, I'm guessing this person is an academic who was taught this crap and now teaches it to others. Her arguments were all justg anti-US, throwing in random stats but lacking real evidence, POC over represented in prison but also over represented in crime stats. Her comments about cultural appropriation because Elvis made money from his music but those who developed the style didn't is silly. Plenty of POC have made huge sums through music, sport and business, etc, they have reached the top of US society in numerous fields, do the athletes who are paid millions for playing sport invent the games, of course not, just crappy arguments unworthy of an Oxford debate.

What is a Nigerian-British student doing talking about racism in America?
She spews so much crap that it's drying her mouth!! She can't possibly believe what she is saying..
joseph guidry Nah. I think she was born to be stupid.
She says that Institutions and Individuals are necessarily linked. Did she just make David Webb's argument? Isn't his main point that we need to look at the foundations of the individual and improve an individuals condition. If you make institutions filled with strong individuals then you get strong institutions.
What I hope for this young woman is that one or more of the other speakers and faculty took her aside to discuss her presentation, provided counseling and mentoring, and that afterward, with more education and experience, she is now a totally different person, who can look back and discuss this event with humor, compassion, and wisdom. People make mistakes, especially when young. Such a transformation would then make for a very interesting presentation at the Oxford Union.
This is just emotion sadly.

This is such an awful take. Feelings feelings feelings. This reminds me of a five year old whining about not getting a fistful of candy before dinner. Wah Wah Wah! I say, eliminate excuses for black people, all of the excuses, meet every one of their demands. make it so they no longer can use race as an excuse for their perceived plight. What is left at the end of the day will be the same issues they have always had, and it won't be racism.

Anyone who can read can discover that virtually every peer reviewed study finds systemic racism exists in the USA in whatever aspect of American culture it's examining.
Agreed. The people who don't want change also don't do any actual research. I can pull up several peer reviewed studies on a range of different areas of society. What boggles my mind is when I show it to people the response is "well that doesn't prove anything, it's complicated." It's like they don't want to know. Yes it is complicated, and that's why we have these studies. And the trend obviously shows evidence of racial bias in the system.
Someone who thinks like herself, thinking she is perhaps informed, educated, well read and righteous of her own beliefs would come across as someone who carries morality in their stead. Well this couldn't be further from the case. Would it surprise anyone that she resigned herself from the Oxford Student Union after 2 women accused her of rape, and in which she tried to paint herself the victim? Would it also come as a surprise that she wasn't removed from her University course? Whereas, if this was a male student they would have likely been demonised and subjugated to the fault of their own actions?
Amazing.
Where did she get her information from? Facebook?
