I think they felt his slight nervousness and were on edge a bit. Dude was mad funny
The material is really good -- I can see why he was a writer for Michelle Wolf's Netflix show.
I think his delivery could use some polishing. Minor things, like timing, transitions, energy level, etc. Some of his best lines didn't have as much impact as they should have -- "my parents were also disappointed," "straight for a rate," etc those lines are killer but he says it in such a laid back way that not everyone is going to catch it.
But once again the material is fantastic. And I thought the delivery by the end was better -- or maybe by that time I'm just more used to his style.

Actually in most stand up circles, if you also do stand up, its seen as encouragement to laugh hard at a joke in the back between your own set. It tends to make the rest of the crowd feel like its okay to laugh because you will never be as loud and annoying as that person.

his material is definitely funny but there's this undeniable aspect of awkwardness and hesitancy, which i'm not sure if it's the reason he stumbles his words a couple of times, that + a sense of sadness that doesn't come across as humorous but rather makes me feel empathetic and wanna hug him, to express that things will be fine.
