I would love to see penetration testing on body armor 5, 10 and more years after it's official expiration just to see how it's capability changes over time, and how fast and severe the drop-off really is.
It would be interesting. The results would likely vary with the patterns of use of the plate or soft armor. Most of these warranty/expiration periods seem to presume daily or regular use. I started with steel plates, but I will have no reservation about getting poly or ceramic plates because I don't foresee them degrading to any significant extent for those of us who are rarely, if ever likely to wear them and store them in nice climate controlled environments.
@@kenofken9458 Correct, the warranty is expecting the plates to be worn regularly and be in varying climates, such as trunk of a police cruiser in hot or cold weather. The dates are also conservative for liability reasons. If you dont heavily abuse them and they spend most of their time sitting in your closet theyll easily last 10+ years. After that point you’ll probably want newer better lighter stronger ones anyhow and keep the old ones for training
It has a 60 month warranty from date it s delivered. I think that’s awesome. I wonder what the actual shelf life is though 🤔. I’m not a huge guy so the light stuff makes it or breaks it for me.

Probably frangibles. It's what i believe was done in the Vet Manufac UHMWPE run. The API busting it notched that up, UHMWPE sucks against steel or tungsten. I have the feeling the plate is fairly well made, if nothing else. I wonder...
The speculation is that they are using HB210 or HB212, current generation PE. With that material "stopping" those threats at this thickness isn't an issue, but it's not done because the BFS would be too high, and the multi-hit capability would be diminished. Al seem to agree when looking at those specs on Dayton's PDFs. To say Dayton Armor is the "best armor" on the planet is a misnomer, it's more like heading towards a different direction than what's safe. They take a "safe" formula and shaved it down, kind of like Hesco but more extreme.
@@trechtzach8151 "The speculation is" ... proof that you don't actually know? I'm willing to bet that given the choice between a high velocity rifle round destroying several major organs on it's way through their body, or suffering trauma from BFD... most people would take the latter. Sensible people, the ones that don't assume every threat automatically hits small armour plates, would probably be wearing some soft body armour underneath. At the very least, some kind of padding would be a sensible idea.
It is amazing to see armor reach up to and start to be able to stop even 50.cal rounds. Now if we just add a couple of grand and include the shock absorbing materials that are being tested we might see soldiers survive center mass impacts from even a 50.cal sniper. Defense technology is catching up to it's gunpowder era weapons at at last. I wonder how that will be countered in the future?
That's a good question honestly. When body armor starts to regularly out perform and stop modern ballistics, two valid options will be rounds using more kinetic force such as hand held rail guns or high heat weaponry capable of burning through the armor. For the longest time the bullet has had the advantage and now it seems the playing field is becoming more even.
All I had in my school backpack to protect me would have been a few rotten bananas. I love how you guys have so many body armour options available yet here it's illegal to own because trying to save your life from a potential gunshot is illegal. Karl…first & foremost, thank you for your service to our country. I enjoy the hell out of watching your videos. But I wanted to comment on this one. Please do not feel that this is criticism. I’m just merely an old Army Ranger making some points. In this video I noticed that the plate you put through the .50 cal torture test “Karl Special” is not something that they currently sell to LEO, SWAT guys or civilians. I’m not even sure if it was just a collaborative effort specially made for you by Dayton Armor. They seem to be a high speed, low drag company but I’m truly curious as to how the RF1 and RF2 plates actually stand up to the specific threats they are designed to defeat. I see very little about them online and even less reviews. I’m very curious as to their claims. I’m in the market for a set of thin, lightweight plates that I can use in conjunction with the SHITTY, useless soft armor my department issues. What’s the possibility of setting something like this up? After 12yrs as a Ranger and 24yrs as a LEO my old, broken down, metal & pin filled body no longer wants to carry a bulky, heavy ceramic plate which is why I’m searching the polyethylene plates. The RF1 at .38” thick and 1.6lbs is right up my alley. Do you have any additional resources I can look into about Dayton Armor? The fact that certain “varsity” teams that don’t “exist” are using them has piqued my interest. Thanks.

Please pardon some personal opinions…Ive been inside a lot of chests. I spent 12 months on a cardio thoracic vascular surgery service during a general surgery residency. That initial 50 caliber BROWNING machine gun round or 50 BMG (not Barrett) plate deformation was lethal-I’ve gotta give J Browning his due👊🏻 Barrett builds that amazing rifle. The sternum would have shattered and the resultant force load with bone fragments into the mediastinum or heart sack would’ve lacerated all kinds of pipes big enough to have names. Not to mention the hydrostatic force the blood within the heart would place upon the heart chambers, valves and vessels. DEAD RIGHT THERE. If thicker clothes, muscles, Kevlar were present and behind the plate, that offset could allow for survivability. Mileage can vary and usually is at different the drivers discretion. The best plate carrier is situational awareness. Thanks for these incredible videos.

I agree
@@kenofken9458 never use steel. They are defeated by speed. Any round going fast enough will beat it. Also spalling. I don’t care what any company says about whatever coating they put on them you will get spall and that can and will kill. Finally they aren’t that much cheaper anymore you can spend the same on ceramic and PE plates that have a lm NIJ rating and are reputable… and steel plates weight 2x as much. Fuck any and all steel plates
Karl's maniacal laugh is my new favorite thing. 0:33
This was LITERALLY another great video!!!😂👍
imagine the full body armor suit this company could make with lightweight materials like this.
10:50 I agree with you armor is to protect you it's not comfortable it's comforting i see these guys running these tiny plates chances of the round actually hitting it are Slim I don't understand that's why I run 11x14 plates in my rifle armor carrier but also have 3A armor that wraps around my body has a ton of coverage.
Endless potential for up armored jockstraps! I can hear Jerry yelling “shut up an take dees money”!
That was insane! Great stuff on body armour! Thanks again Mr Erickson!
Glad you enjoyed it
I love that after all of that, in the end a little armor piercing bullet killed it 🤣🤣🤣
That was bad ass! Thanks Karl! Great stuff man
Very interesting. That PE seems very tough given it's overall thickness and weight. While you couldn't kill this stuff, I probably could :D
Probably frangibles.
It's what i believe was done in the Vet Manufac UHMWPE run. The API busting it notched that up, UHMWPE sucks against steel or tungsten.
I have the feeling the plate is fairly well made, if nothing else. I wonder...
BFD on that AK shot on the first plate was rough
Do it do it
The speculation is that they are using HB210 or HB212, current generation PE.
That was pretty Kick-Ass bro we appreciate the knowledge
The ending scene felt poetic, awesome videos thanks Karl
I’m glad you said caliber armor! We trust your opinion. 3A shooters cut
I was in total shock that the dummy didn't get knocked over with the .50 at point blank range. That is a LOT of energy
I favorited this just for that laugh after shooting the plate lmao
Also, if nobody ever told ya, you had a sick stache back in the day Karl
+1 for the classic Dirty Harry reference. Excellent film
All I had in my school backpack to protect me would have been a few rotten bananas. I love how you guys have so many body armour options available yet here it's illegal to own because trying to save your life from a potential gunshot is illegal. You would probably be charged for owning medieval chainmail or even a jockstrap.
Unfortunately I don't think they will be getting much from taxpayers in the future after they have destroyed the economy
Actually I lie I do have a few 22lr rated phone books from the 80s that are about 6 inches thick 🤣🤣🤣 probably illegal hahahah
Come to the states bro!
Where do u live
I may as well live at the bottom of the Marianas Trench
8:49 is pure gold "me and Jesus were running flak jackets back in the day"
OUTSTANDING!! If I ever have a few grand burning a hole in my pocket. I'm grabbing the Safelife Defense FRAS, with these plates for the heard armor inserts!! Can't beat that combination!!!
FRAS is kinda cringe. Roll oer to Hexar for the real deal.
And if you want hard plates...
Might I suggest something from RMA?
@@KoishiVibin You gotta admit these plates are pretty awesome! I'm looking at getting some level 4 Scorpion Tactical plates. I've seen them take some serious damage without pass through! I'll check out your suggestions though.
I’m going with FRAS 3+ stand-alone. Best plates IMO. Only flexible 3+
FIRST VIDEO I'VEHAD THE PLEASURE TO SEE. EXCELLENT. I OWNED A SMALL CLOSE PROTECTION COMPANY IN THE 80s & 90s
Karl, I heard you got the Rona. I hope you're doing OK brother. All of our prayers are heading your way man. Stay in the fight....We Love you Karl. Mad respect homie....
I'll be fine. I just need a week of sleep. THanks for the support.
@@TacticalRifleman Outstanding news. See you in a week.
As I understood, Dayton Armor does not sell level IV plates. level IV is replaced by RF3, but the best I could find in Dayton armor page is RF2+, which is rated for 5.56mm M855 BT
Our current website products avoid overlap with our military products. Once you get to the RF3/Level IV plates there are direct conflicts with our military products so we'd have to "dumb down" the systems (make them heavier) and that sucks. Long story short, we're working on it. Stay tuned.
@@daytonarmor8329 idk lol that "TR50" you guys made is only 1.1 inches thick and 4 lbs each is AMAZING for what it just did in this video haha not to many people would complain about 4 lbs if it can do what it did here.
@@Blackbeard1323 they basically said “we can’t sell our best armor to civilians”...
The anti spalling coat on the metal plates capture the metal fragments. Ive seen many test videos about it. However if you have a big gut and the plate is at a 45 degree angle, that metal plate will deflect the bullet right at your face/ neck. Just sharing some info
Great episode TacRif!
Thanks for watching, TR
"I like weird shit..." - Carl, 2021
Thanks for the great information and thank you for your service
Dayton armors sales just went through the fuckin stratosphere.
Sold out on large
Badass video guys. Those plates look awesome. Killer shooting lmri
Three incontrovertible facts:
1. Thanks Karl for the informative information & knowledge on body armor!
2. I'm glad Karl is on our side!
3. karl isn't one you'd want to tick off then meet in a dark alley or any alley for that matter! 🤣

Great stuff! Really enjoy your videos. Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Hey Karl, would you consider doing a video on those expired plates you have?
Perhaps some types of materials will still be able to stop threats they were once rated for.
There are like four videos on RUclips, I think if you did a test it would be a hit.
Either way, thank you
(I’m not saying to wear expired armor... this is for less than optimal scenarios)
I’ll add it to the video idea list.
@@TacticalRifleman please do! That would be very interesting to see how different materials degrade over time
high speed tactical Chris Walken lol. all fun and games, great video man!!!! thank you
That sub-2lb lvl4 plate is insane. I've heard that it exists, but this this is first time seeing them or knowing where to get them. I've only seen lvl3 plates get under 2lbs a plate
As I understood, Dayton Armor does not sell level IV plates. level IV is replaced by RF3, but the best I could find in Dayton armor is RF2+, which is rated for 5.56mm M855 BT
There is no mention of a level IV plate on their website. The lightest level IV plate that is an actually NIJ listed model is the Hesco 4800 series ranging from 4.5-5 ish lbs depending on size.
@@brandonpowell480 exactly. This is just an advertisement for Dayton armor and he doesn’t have any idea what he’s talking about. He actually recommended steel armor...wtf
Karl's mustache at the 8:40 mark is absolute perfection. Bring that back.
My Porn Days are over.
Thanks
Mike, you are welcome.
Mr Gunslinger on Tactical Rifleman's comments. It's like watching DC's Superman shooting the bull with Marvel's Captain America. Universes colliding. I absolutely love it.
If you are a "member" you don't have to watch commercials, if you want to monitize without you tube, insert/sell your own commercials! (in case ya didn't know). like, Dayton armor! thank you for your service, sir ! Great channel , just found it!
Thanks for watching, TR
Love the video! I'm definitely interested in purchasing a set of their RF1 or RF2+ plates given that they're about a pound lighter than anything else on the market; however, I'm concerned about the lack of information on the Dayton Armor products outside of this video. I've tried contacting them for more info, but never received a response. It would be great if you could shoot their RF1/RF2+ plates so we can see how their higher rated commercially available plates perform with multiple impacts and different calibers!
Agreed. Almost no info about Dayton plates online. If I didn’t have a fairly high level of trust for Karl, I would be inclined to disregard them immediately. Still not quite sure I want to trust my life to them based on this one video.
Without a doubt my new favorite channel. Carl is absolutely amazing. The “Carl Special”, hahahaha.
That 50 cal hit still would have killed you. To much blunt force trauma to the chest. Still impressive though!
What would be absolutely great to see is if you managed to put some sort of sensor in the inside of gel to see how much force is actually passed through and what kind of damage that can do.
Thanks.
We are gonna film a follow up video with Dayton Armor and I will address your concerns.
@@TacticalRifleman if you don’t mind my asking…if running Dayton Armor what plate are you currently running?
@@TacticalRifleman yes myself and many others share the same view, highly interested in these Dayton R1 & R2 looking forward to the follow up Karl!
@@TacticalRifleman Any update on this? Did you end up doing a follow up? Looking at Dayton Armor plates and they claim to make the plates for Velocity.
Great video. Answers some more questions I had. 👊
Does anybody know if these 50 cals were left in the A-stan with all the other crap we gave the Taliban?
Pretty much, yeah. Among fuckloads of other sensitive equipment. So fucked lol
T-band has held several parades with all the gear donated to them by the empty suits. Videos of them in formation with tons of .50 cal rifles, are all over this platform. Forget the .50s, the next guys who go in, need to be more concerned with drones, mortars, manpads, Paladins, ATMs, ATGMs (Javelin, Dragon), etc…
And a lot of actual military grade full auto m16 rifles. Yet Americans can’t have that stuff.
Govt sees citizens as threats; not so with Taliban.
Dayton Armor,,,,, in case mom wants an open casket,,, awesome vid brother
Imagine living in a country where you should think about buying a military grade body armor for your children while him/her going to school. Crazy stuff.
Just looked on their website. $700 per plate for RF+2 sure isn’t cheap, but at barely 2.98lbs each?! That’s 1/3 the weight of steel! That’s ridiculous!!! I need these in my life!
@Dan Trebune I would LOVE to be able to buy those TR-50 plates! I’m sure they’d be like $1500 each, but they’re incredible for being the same thickness as Hesco 4800 series plates. Plus I’ve NEVER seen a plate of any kind stop a 50BMG! The energy transfer of M193 must be so tiny with plates like that!
Thank you TR Karl. Great info and great video as usual. I use level IIIA ploy plates while working security but seeing the RF plates definitely looking to upgrade with Dayton Armor.....
Karl, you just had to show off that gold Desert Eagle....LOL that smile on your face said it all... pretty sweet piece there.
That Imri's blaster
I truly love your content! I will have to check out Dayton Armor!
I've got swimmer plates for my rifle kit rn, it was kind of a "buy it and try it" just to learn i think i prefer the extra coverage. They were on sale to.
HighCom and Hesco are the two Best makers I know of. I wear 3/4” thick, 8” x 10” full cut front & rear level 4 standalone HighCom made plates on top of my Armor Express Razor level 2 soft armor panels in a Revolution concealable carrier. 😆👍🏻
Highcom yes, hesco has the most failed follow up testing from the NIJ.
Friggin awesome videos on a friggin awesome channel by friggin awesome brothers of bad-assary!
Thanks for sharing
That was fun. Time to break out the checkbook.
Karl is hilarious. Awesome video guys.
Very informative & honest
Is there a link to get this armor? The site does not work. It show a sketchy page that says my browser is out dated and needed to upgraded. I tried 3 different browsers...

It’s not as bad for the $$ for that rating at that price point I will be running these soon!! Thanks for the review.

Wow, carrier did a great job! Thanks for the video.
If you’re taking a .50 to the chest at point blank, you’re probably a soldier in the Russian army who was caught trying to AWOL and the only reason you’re wearing a plate like that was so they would have a few seconds to mock you while you bled out internally.
Love this guy❤
