- Body armor is becoming more prevalent in all aspects of emergency services and civilian use. Today’s video is a common sense guide to body armor and my recommendations for police, EMS, and law enforcement.

Video Idea: Identifying and Treating Heat Stroke/Exhaustion
Some signs of heat stroke are high body temperature, altered mental state, alteration in sweating, nausea, vomiting , rapid heart rate and rapid breathing treatment is pretty easy get them out of the sun get them drinking water and slowly cool them off

@@jameson1239 Your recommended treatment for heat stroke is inadequate. What you described is the treatment for heat stress, which is the stage before heat stroke. Heat stroke is far more serious and deadly, and requires a more professional level of medical intervention. Heat stress will have profuse sweating, nausea, and possible disorientation, whereas heat stroke will have no sweating and clammy skin. The body has passed the ability to cool it's self down on it's own and starts to shut down. Heat stroke victims will likely need to be placed on or packed in ice an require more advanced medical intervention. I'm not a medical professional and it's been a long time since my military training regarding heat stress and heat stroke, but these are some key points I think I remember from my training over 20 years ago.
Tango India Mike yeah your right last weekend I did my wilderness first aid course your correct heat stress and heat stroke are different although most people use the terms interchangeably so I assumed he meant heat stress
I'm a certified hazwoper and we use class A suits which presents a decent risk of overheating and what they taught us about treating heat stroke is to drag them out suit and all without decontamination because they won't be able to do it themselves usually, as someone already said, it's just the body giving up. Then get them to the hospital asap. They also taught us the best thing you can do is learn the signs of heat stress and prevent it from going further.
On top of the added weight you mentioned, I'd also add that it severely increases body temp, I used to wear 3A level, as a security guard up here in Canada, easily added 15-20°c to whatever the temperature was.
I'd rather be hot than dead.
On plate carriers-
You can get level 4 plates that are made to go in the sides of certain plate carriers. While there is still a gap in coverage between the front/back and side plates, that option does exist.
If your plate carrier does not have slots for side plates, you can get molle mounted side plate carriers.
I've also seen plate carriers with soft armor sides so theres another option
I put a plate carrier on, & couldn't believe how little coverage there was!
Take a look at Autopsy Report Diagrams - most GSW's are in the periphery...
Side plates are a must.
think of it this way, most gsws are in the periphery because the plates stopped the ones more in the center
Well, for us in the military, the soft armour that wraps around is really warm. Especially so if we're going into swamps or whatever warm environments. Besides, most opfor use rifles so it doesn't make difference to us. Running to cover faster is better than really clunky armour. Idk, just personal preference

Fun fact: bomb suits can’t even stop a 9mm. They are designed to stop slow moving shrapnel and mitigate pressure.
Not true, the main torso chest piece can stop up to a .50 from a S&W500 Magnum, for a bomb suit to do its job it has to stop projectiles that are just as fast or faster than military grade cartridges. Or else the idea behind a bomb suit would be useless..
What is shrapnel but a collection of high-velocity, low-caliber bullets? If the bomb suit cant stop pistol cartridges then how does the shrapnel not blow through the armor like feathers?

It varies greatly from suit to suit. Some stop almost everything, some stop nothing.

Love the video. Most people just recommend a plate carrier since that is what "cool" guys are wearing, so it has to be the best for everyone, and not thinking about specific needs.

Most gun fights are forward facing, but I agree with your best choice. I'm very happy with my HRT RAC carrier with Duritium GT (Green Tip) armor plates, .5 inch thick and only 4.5 lbs. But if I'm not in a place or situation where I would be worried about a green tip .556, I have the option of removing the Duritium plates and inserting level 3A soft plates in it to wear it all day without knowing it's there. HRT carriers have some great flexibility too, for attachment points and accessories.
This is the most important video .I really like this way of explaining the details of product.My all time favourite was the last one .
Great video. Wish I'd seen it before I bought a plate carrier. Thankfully, (?) carrier had defective stitching, unraveling after 2 shifts so back it went. Going now for Medsafe IIIA+ Extended protection; they say it weighs #7 vs the same size vest in FRAS which is #17+. Can't wait to get it, PRAY I never "need" it. Great videos for all around medical "smarts!" I wish you were on 20 years ago!

This video really helped. I’m a licensed armed security officer and I used to wear level four in my vest. Then I switched over to soft armor level three a but you just let me know I can wear both together. And that way you do get a lot more coverage and you have the ability to always take them out.

Working on the private sector, here is very common use for the criminal use of automatic rifles so i choose a 5.11 TacTec platecarier with 2 level IV Ceramic plates. For me its confortable for a 12 hrs shift. Im not using a internal vest but now im consider to get one to combinate with it.
Getting something like the Hardwire from Safariland or from some other company is advised.
SafeLife is... I'd advise staying away. Chinese products are notorious for poor QC.
As it stands, what plates do you have?
Also, if you get some IIIA to stick back there, it can increase your protection somewhat, as well as just providing some extended protection.
However, this will retain heat. Think wisely, as PR is a hotter environment.

I do security contract work that requires me to wear body armor
I use & love Safeline Defense tactical carrier level IIIA. I have been wearing them for years.
I have to wear the vest for 18 hours 5 days a week. Now I do cheat a bit & take it off when I'm in the security room.
I feel you, friend. I'm beginning to wear now medieval full contact armor for competitions: even if it's titanium, custom fit and all that (so, orders of magnitude better than bulk-made LARP stuff), at the end of the day my back and shoulders just scream in pain and agony xD

I see a lot of people talking about how "what if you get shot in the arms or legs?"... Well then you just got shot in the arm or leg fam... I mean it's obvious that you can't realistically protect every part of your body, and unfortunately there's no way to predict how a situation will unfold, but having some sort of protection, is certainly far better than having no protection at all. You either wear it or you don't. At the end of the day, if you've found yourself in a firefight, then I mean all you can do is mitigate your chances of getting hit as much as possible, just because you have body armor on doesn't mean that you embrace bullets with open arms lol. A lot of people are just having a misunderstanding about the purpose of body armor. You don't wear body armor to get shot, you wear body armor so that in the chance that you are shot, you will survive, granted it hits the armor. You're still rollin dice here folks.

When i lived in South Africa the plate carrier was necessary. Lots of old AKs,FALS and Galils still floating about...
Love how the picture for lv3 shows an A2 20” AR when a basic 223 out of a 20” AR will blow right through lv3 lol.

I really appreciate this. As a Infantry soldier, I get that plate carriers give one better range of movement, but the distinct lack of protection against anything other than a direct shot at the vitals is incredibly worrying, Having soft armor externally with the plate carrier as well makes way more sense to me.
And as a bonus, you have a single piece of kit that can hold everything the battle belt and plate carrier can hold and give you proper protection against shrapnel.

For being a former small county deputy in southern iowa. Most of us did have to buy our own plate carriers. You never know what your gonna run into at 2am and backup is 30-40mins away

Side protection in general is just for show.
Current standards for soft armor establish the effective protective surface with a V50 for the munitions tested begins after 3 inches from all borders of the vest.

If you're struggling with the political aspect of external carriers, especially molle carriers, don't forget to mention that you might save $$$, particularly through health care costs and its related HR costs (OT, extra people to cover shifts of injured officers, turnover due to injury or painkillers issues, and other issues)
I wear a plate carrier, in my line of work mobility is key. Different cuts and coverage for everyone. I don’t wear my body armor expecting it to stop any bullets. I wear my armor to make sure my family gets full benefits if anything happens to me. The truth is you could always get shot in the head, in the legs and arm were vital arteries are and bleed out. As cool as they are I still prefer knowing how to use my weapon. Nice video great presentation of overt and covert vests.

M C yup the insurance is tied to my gear. Higher pay out if I’m properly armored up. No armor equals base payout

I have used the safe life concealable soft armor everyday for security contracting for the last two years and I must say it gets stinky pretty fast. Ive noticed if I turn it inside out after shift it won't stink as much by the next day but does get stinky by the end of day. What do you recommend to keep smells down in between washes?
Btw... I wash the vest cover at least once a week but it's starting show to wear from the frequent washes...
I have never worn body armour however I have worn hockey gear and I used Downey in plastic bags just in the gear to deal with the smell I don’t know of it would help with body armour however so it might work

Curious to ask. In our place there has never been a concealable internal soft armor. Is there any way to buy outside of my place? Coming from the Philippines.
not sure if I were right: if only consider both the concealment and protection, looks like the second one(safelifedefense) is the one to go, because it can be wore underneath cloth (is it?) and it can upgrade protection by inserting hard plates.
funny enough, a bomb suit offers very little balistic protection, demo ranch recently tested it and the chest piece stopped handgun rounds and the helmet didnt even do that, military grade high density polyethylene seems to be the best in terms of protection and weight but i only really have experience with kevlar vests
As somebody who worked 7 years in germany as paramedic - this video makes me sad... we never used to wear body armor... we had no need to do so... today however, it is more and more in use - but just the blade-protection types which are only suitable against knife attacks (just because we don´t have many gun shootings here)... =/ but anyway, cool informative video!

We had a medic at Ft Benning that was very realistic about body armor...He took one of the guys and had him put his flak jacket on...Then he told the guy to put his hands in his front pockets..The kid said "why am I doing this?" ...The medic said "I wanted to show you not one, but two unprotected femoral arteries...transect either one in a firefight...you got about 8 minutes to lights out"

That's true, but there's always sacrifice. Of course you can't cover everything, but something is certainly better than nothing at all. The best way to protect yourself is to not find yourself in a firefight lol.

Really Good Job Sam. As a civilian how much should I spend on a soft Body Armor vest. I see a lot of them on Ebay, and I've seen the very expensive stuff like The Hyperline by FRAS. But the $2K + plus price tag, is more than I want to afford. Are their cheaper Vests that you can recommend? Like under $100 bucks. Or is that not possible? Thanks man. RC from Houston.

Stab protection is a different dynamic and some knives/ steaks can get through kevlar

The osprey armour the British army get issued is pretty decent. Its soft armour with large plates front and back.

Question: If I combine a level 3A ceramic stand alone plate with a level 3A soft protector shell, would that stop a rifle shot?
I know it's not an ideal setup but, it's what I already own.

I have asked the same question and no answer so far, but I would say Yes. but won" protect against rifle rounds. Best to go with level 3A and a trauma plate behind the soft armor.
What about FRAS Armor with Level IV standalone plates in them and Extra Rifle Rated Side plates?
What Size AR500 Plates do I order for my Vest? I ordered the Small of the Last one your showed and am curious as to which size panels to order. I want both hard and soft and the side panels and I’m curious what sizes go in?
Look up the sizes of the plates, and cut them out of eva foam. Then you can see what size you want with the foam plate.
