I don't care what anyone says, the first two Rocky movies are not about boxing. They are wonderful love stories and studies of a tough man with a tender heart - with boxing as a backdrop.

True. The Boxing is actually comical. The hits “Rocky” took to the face and absolutely after the 2nd knockdown if not way before, would have been stopped TKO!

Stallone had paired up with the original director, John Avildsen in the hopes of trying their best to replicate the success of the original movie. Really interesting reaction. I don’t think Rocky II is as good as the first, but this reminded me what is good about it. It’s much more of a crowd pleaser and pays off a lot of the delayed gratification from the first. On repeat viewings it’s blatant sentimentality I don’t think plays as well as the first film, but it’s certainly effective.
The films take a bit of a turn into a different style for the next two, but even if they’re not your thing, stick with the series as with Rocky Balboa and especially Creed it goes back to its roots and the payoff is well worth it.

In all seriousness, Sylvester Stallone is one of the most under-rated actors of his generation. Obviously, a lot of his roles don't give him much chance to show it, but when he does have the chance, he's terrific.

@@stormdavis3178 They say he can't act because of all the Yo Adrian and slurring. He was playing the part that he created. That sort of changed as the series progressed, but it was his vision. But in interview after interview Sylvester Stallone shows that he is an extremely intelligent man. He wrote, directed, and acted in most of the Rocky series, and in my opinion, Irwin Winkler should be ashamed of himself and turn over ownership of Rocky to its creator. He's a great actor and American.

One of the details I always loved in this movie is at the end of the fight it is Apollo that hands Rocky the prize and raises his arm in celebration. Apollo set himself up as the "bad" guy to have a rematch I always believe it was because deep down he didn't believe he won the fight and he needed to know, but at the end he knew for sure that he had lost to Rocky and he was alright with knowing that. Both Rocky and Apollo have the spirit of true fighters. Great reaction and I hope you continue the Rocky journey.

Tony (“Duke”) continues to shine in his limited screen time. In the first film, he was the only one to recognize Rocky’s tenacity and punching power. In this film, he says it outright: Apollo Creed is the greatest fighter in history, beat Balboa within an inch of his life, and still could not put Rocky on the canvas for the ten count.

What's so remarkable about the Rocky franchise is that somehow the first movie won the Oscar for best picture *and yet* everyone who watches them finds reasons they might like the subsequent movies even more.
Even if you don't grow to like Paulie the person, appreciate him for being a brilliant, perfectly acted character. We see Rocky's compassion in the way he befriends Pauly, and we see Adrian's strength in how she stands up to her brother. If Rocky had to show that compassion to Adrian without Pauly it might look like pity, and if Adrian had to show that strength to Rocky it might have looked like their relationship was weakening, not getting stronger. Stallone's inclusion of the Pauly character was a brilliant move.

34:12 Going by the actual rules of boxing, only Creed would be counted as being knocked down. Rocky fell over from exhaustion and overbalancing, not from a blow from Creed, so he would be ruled to have slipped only. However, Stallone wanted drama when he wrote the script, and so the referee (who was a real-life boxing referee and judge, btw) counted them both.

One of my favorite lines in any movie is when Rocky says, 'You ain't never get rid of me.' The best part of the Rocky movies is how they humanize every character. It would've been easy to make another empty movie about boxing with lots of action, but that's never been what Rocky is about. Even characters like Apollo, who could've been just a one-note villain, becomes a real person you can relate to and feel for, (especially in the later films). These are heartfelt dramas disguised as action movies, which is super clever.

33:36 Yes, Addie. If you get knocked out at any point in the fight, you lose no matter how many points you have. A knockout occurs when a fighter gets knocked down and cannot get back up before the referee counts to 10. (A technical knockout or "TKO" occurs when a boxer doesn't get knocked down but is so hurt that they are physically unable to continue fighting, and it is effectively the same thing as a knockout.) Points only matter if the match ends without either boxer getting knocked out.
Rocky wins here because both fighters fell to the mat, and the referee was counting them both out. If neither of them could get up before the count of 10, it would've been deemed a double knockout and therefore a draw (no winner). But Rocky was able to get to his feet at 9, and Apollo couldn't get back up before the referee got to 10, so Rocky beat Apollo by 1 second.

…….you have a long way to go Miss Addie ❤️ I’m here for it ! Like watching them all for the 1st time again. I was 10 yrs. old in 1976,
……I had the privilege to see them all at the theatre on their actual release dates, consumed most of my life …..the anticipation of each film and having to wait so many years in between. I believe that this rivals Star Wars franchise which I’ve seen entire catalog also on their actual release dates ! A lot of waiting but so worth it ❤️ 💯

Apollo didn't just want to win the fight, he wanted to knock Rocky out... Had Apollo cared about winning, he would have stayed away from Rocky at the last round instead of going toe to toe with Rocky as Apollo was way ahead of points and would have won by decision... It was Apollo's emotions that lost him that fight, that maybe the thought that if he won by decision, the thoughts that he can't 'beat' Rocky (see his conversation with Duke earlier) would continue... To Apollo, beating Rocky would be to knock Rocky out, not win by decision.
