As a barista myself, I’m really hurt that my profession is being portrayed this way. We don’t laugh at anyone who asks us to explain the menu board. And a flat white IS NOT a stronger latte. A latte has its espresso extracted for 21 seconds, a flat white is for 15 making the coffee a ristretto shot. Thin milk (thinner than latte milk) is then added. So it has a larger ratio of coffee to milk.
Should I ever go to an overpriced coffee shop I ask for a coffee...I’m asked what type....just a fucking coffee with milk (apparently it’s an americano)
If you add thinner milk that a latte, your doing both wrong! A latte is mostly steamed milk topped with microfoam and foam. A flat white is entirely textured milk. Save volumes, a latte is milky and a flat white is velvety and has a stronger coffee taste.
The people that sit in coffee shops aren't going to go and sit in McDonalds. It's a different demographic. It's a different consumer. It's a different need. If your barista is condescending, go to a different cafe. But a lot of them are okay, take pride in their work and want to show you how fascinating coffee can be. :)
I can't believe that after a year McDonalds haven't corrected their calculations 2/3 coffee 1/3 milk and 1/3 foam... or are they trying to make a statement about coffee shop employees! And if that's a "Joke" I'm sure it's not amusing any Baristas.
While assorted halfwits are getting worked up about the four thirds "joke" at 14 seconds, what nobody has noticed is the error at the end. The bloke in Maccy's has quite clearly asked the staff member what a flat white is AFTER ordering it, as she tells him the answer as she hands it over. That's the coke-addled advertising copywriters for you.
So, they're adopting products and language from the specialty industry while at the same time portraying them all as pretentious snobs? Thank goodness McD is there to save us from the plague of local businesses!
Anyone tell me who is the actress with the long dark hair who puts her hand to her chest and says "aww you don't know what a flat white is?" I'm slowly losing my marbles trying to figure it out. Thanks!

Would never laugh at someone who asked, but I always describe a flat white as a cappuccino with less foam and no chocolate. A cappuccino is 1/3 espresso, 1/3 milk, 1/3 foam + chocolate. More foam/less milk ratio is extra-dry cappuccino, More milk/less foam/no chocolate is flat white
It would have been nice if I hadn't had to "rewind" a few times so I could understand what on earth the McDonald's clerk was saying! Regional accents can be perfectly nice, but if a person can't enunciate and speak distinctly....
