- This is the MRE used by Chinese Pilots on long flight missions. Very similar in design to the 1950's-1980's In-Flight Food Packets used by the U.S. Air Force. But with a much more exotic twist.
Huge thanks to MRE Zone for sending in this ration!

@@tapestry6455 Yeah, tastes like tuna, your point?
😂😂
I'm not exaggerating when I say that watching this channel is responsible for me being less bothered about eating out of date food.
I found a local discount market which carries food near it's expiration date. A lot of it is gourmet name brand high end stuff I could normally not afford. I eat a lot better now and the stuff is cheap. Like, 75% off.
Exactly. Use by dates are generally made up nonsense. Trust you senses to determine when to throw something out.
@ffec+
Personally I agree with you, but Its not nonsense from the perspective of the grocery store. Best before dates are mainly there for liability reasons. Otherwise there would be grounds for sue-happy individuals to wreak havoc every time they were to get a stomach ache. Yeah. It sucks that grocery stores create so much waste. But for the owners it's much less of a hassle to enforce best before dates than it is to go to court because of some bullshit.

The soup is seaweed egg drop soup, very common soup in China, seaweed can be confused with lavender by very very terrible machine translation because it literally translates to “purple vegetable/plant” and I guess lavender is purple...
Thanks Aira3 for the correct info.

Cornavirus food.
Seaweed egg drop? That sounds awesome!
Worrying about it being expired when you literally put a video out the same day where you ate beef from 1899
Well you know what your walking into with a 100+ yr old ration. Definitely past expiration.
It's Chinese made, probably goes bad 1 year before it's 2 year shelf life. It's a good varied meal not going to lie but the quality is sub par.
Volka Gaming I just got diarrhea from a pack of raisins several months before the expiration date it smelled like champagne and otherwise tasted *VERY* sweet. 🍷

What are we discussing here...
@@arashakhnazaranshakhnazara8839 Not sure.
If air in military airplanes is similar to that in commerical airplanes as in dry. Than I believe why the meal was made with so much sea food. It's probably very high in umami flavour which doesn't lose its taste in high altitude dry environments like other tastes.

My Chinese wife says you eat a little pickled vegetables with each bite of the rice dish for flavor. Also the spicy sauce generally goes on the seaweed in most Chinese meals the pickled vegetables (xian cai) pronounced "shan tie" are eaten with each bite.
Very common.
... I’m pretty sure the pickled vegetables (without the adjectives) would be pronounced (shier tsai... kinda. It’s really hard to get the Chinese pronunciation in English). In Chinese pinyin, it would be spelled (xue cai). I have no idea what the (Shan tie) is supposed to be, but yeah. Also, yes the (xue cai) is generally called (xian cai), it’s just that this specific kind of pickled vegetables is called (xue cai), Just to let you know.
@@Canadian-Asian-dude I'm sure his Chinese wife knows her Chinese well
@@flufpolitie There are lots of dialects of Chinese, though. Some are at least as different from each other as English and Dutch.
@@flufpolitie Chinese here, I'm sure her wife knows her Chinese well but it's hard to communicate sound with letters, that's why there are things like IPA and Pinyin. I really can't tell what translation system is she using. It's not Pinyin for sure and it's not likely Cantonese or Teochew, cause I speak both and it doesn't sound like them, either. So it maybe comes from some other dialect or older translation system.
@@flufpolitie actually he's correct. pickled vegetables are called xian cai (literal: salty vegetable), although the packed label stated xue cai (literal: snow vegetable). different regions probably have different names for the same thing.

"launch some peas with that spork" I see steve has his priorities straight
2:25 That HAS to be the best dramatization I've ever seen
"You could launch some serious peas with that thing."
I love you, Steve.
He said that as I was reading your comment lpl
The soup is made with shreds of nori seaweed (same species used in sushi rolls) and beaten eggs, a very common dish because both ingredients are cheap and common pantry items.
The pickle is indeed mustard green (Brassica juncea var. crispifolia) cured in salt and spices. I am a little bothered by the presentation because it is usually finely chopped before serving, but that form probably won't last four years in a bag so there's that.
A lot of these items are acquired tastes and you have handled yourself pretty well :)
I was born eating those type of food so I didn't understand why he didn't like it lol. Other then the fact it is 2 years past its shelf-life... I think I can enjoy it.
The comment I made earlier makes me feel ignorant since I read your post.
You ever had a 2 years past expired ramen noodle?
Tastes like fucking dog food.
That "snow dish" is pickled brown mustard green. I used to eat that thing all the time until I moved to the US. Good times.
Thanks for the discrepancy. So is mustard green xiue cai? (i'm confuzzled despite the fact that I'm Chinese)
Yep!
I love that Steve rates his spoons by their pea launching ability xD

2, that is not white tuna, it's kind of spice flavoured tuna so it doesn't look well.
3, 'snow dish' is a kind of vegetable we sometimes add into steamed buns, probably you don't usually eat Chinese food that's why you are not familiar with it.

I'm sure if these aren't expired they would taste much better. The kelp is a pretty common ingredient to be used in traditional Chinese dishes such as a cold appetizer. The seaweed egg soup is a classic dish too. The pickled veggie is made of Chinese leaf mustard or "gai choy". Pretty nice for a ration to include all those dishes.
My guess is for morale since it'd be familiar. Destroys enemy morale if they have to eat it though haha.

Nice vid. i have a question Steve. If you could "build" you own 24 hour ration, using any parts from all the meals you have eaten so far, What would it look like?
Probably the Pizza Mre with blueberry cobbler and type 3 coffee xD

Alot of you really sleeping on the lemon poppy seed pound cake and the yellow beverage powder
Old comment however My ideal 24 hour ration would be something like this
Cinnamon Bun Shelf Stable
Chicken Burrito Bowl
Beef Goulash
Tortillas
White Wheat Snack Bread x2
Cheese spread x2
Peanut butter
Strawberry Jelly
2 Orange/Lemon-Lime drink mixes
1 Hot Chocolate
2 Coffee Instant type 2
Then the usual stuff. These are just my personal favorites.
Looks like the Chinese treat their flyboys better than their infantry. This package almost looks gourmet compared to the Type 09.
i feel the same, the type 09 just looks so sad.
It’s a depression meal
Julio Avalos normally chinese army would have cooking squad while going out. their ration is only for emergency marching or a tough fighting(with out time for cooking)
Isn’t it the same in every armed forces? There are fewer pilots than infantries that also requires longer training period and more stricter physical requirement (eyesight and height).
Because Chinese army has field cooking vehicles, like a Bradly but for cooking. They can really have a hot meal in battle
Love the shirt!!! " You will get nothing, and like it!!!" Classic movie!

I'm Chinese! Translations of the packets:
2:13 "Beans and rice" (he's holding it upside down)
2:38 "Seaweed and egg soup" Seaweed is spelled "Purple Vegetable" in Chinese so Steve thought it meant lavender :)
2:49 "Umami Spice Sauce"
2:55 "Five Spices Tuna Fish"
3:30 "High Quality Toothpick"
3:37 "Spicy Snow Vegetable" (I don't think people in america eat this... some of my white friends call it "Chinese Mustard")
3:55 "Shredded Kelp"

The soup's probably a classic chicken and seaweed egg drop soup.
The kelp's properly translated as 'kelp ribbons', and you're right. It's an acquired taste - I hate the stuff myself, and drown it in hot sauce before chewing on it.
The pickled veg is most likely Chinese Mustard in a spicy vinegar marinade. Good stuff.
The rest looks pretty adequate - I'd chow down on that on a long flight, mixed together like Korean bibimbap.

The tuna says "Five Spice Tuna", not white tuna. Five Spice Powder is a very common spice mix used in a lot of Chinese dishes, with a lot of variations (with some having more than 5 spieces) using spices like Star Anise, Cloves, Chinese Cinnamon, Sichuan pepper, Fennel seeds, Anise Seeds, Ginger, Nutmeg etc.
Also the vegetable is just Spicy Pickled Vegetables. I think Snow Vegetable is just a term used to mean vegetables pickled for use in winter. This is more of a historical term for back when you can't find fresh vegetables during winter periods.
