This video should undoubtedly be a paid learning session since it teaches a lot of things in addition to the title. Usually titles are more catchy, and content is hollow. But this video is literally is the other way round! Thanks for making it.

What an excellent video for a beginner like me. I am a bit older 40 plus and I am making up for lost time when photography was not affordable in my younger days.
Super great!!! One hint: The a5000 and 6000 series have one more Light LDR option. It is called Dyn. Range Opt. Also there you can adjust the EVs, and you need only ONE shot, so no problems with moving objects. The disadvantage is that you may have more noise in the darks. But if you use iso100 it is usually acceptable!!
Thank you Stephan and all the Sony cameras have the DRO option, but as you said it adds noise by boosting levels in the shadow areas. Great for certain subjects, but not near as good as HDR in my opinion. If you have moving subjects that is a great feature to play with though!

Hope you’re well Jay. I shoot bracketed photos on my RII 3-4 times daily for my real estate work, but I’ve been meaning to take my RX100 VA out to play and see how well the little sensor does.

Thanks Jay for another great tutorial. I've been foolishly using the picture effect on the HDR Painting setting for my HDR shots! I'll be switching to the bracketed method henceforth and will probably finally take up one of those email offers for Aurora HDR when I next get one.

This is so amazing---I really have been needing this ....your images that you have published over this last year have really had a great..SNAP.. to them and I have been anxious to learn more,,I remember the HDR video for the NEX-7 you did..I didn't really get it back then. My son went to Japan last week and I sent along my NEX-6 and a couple of the Sigma art primes for him to use--I am sharing this with him right now so he can up his game photo wise,,Thanks again.
Thank you so much Clint for the kind comments and I'm really glad the video helped you out! That is really cool hooking your son up with some killer gear for his trip. As you you probably know, I still have my Nex-6 and original A7r and these techniques work on those cameras as well. Although on the Nex-6 the menu system is completely different and there is no self timer with bracketing unfortunately. The Auto HDR mode is fantastic for those walking around shots when setting up a tripod is not really worth the effort due to time and what not. On the Nex-6 in the Menu, the "drive mode for bracketing" is in the Camera area, and "Auto HDR" feature is in the Brightness and Color area. I hope that helps and please if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask!!
@@Jason_Hermann Much appreciation for the heads up--forwarding your comments above to him now..---I doubt I will ever sell the NEX-6 off..especially with what I paid for it...Feels like a real deal camera and works well with all my old Minolta glass,,,even in manual focus.,,Will be experimenting with HDR when the camera gets home..

Hi Jay - *thank you* for this - I couldn't find the bracketing option on the RX100 VII for love nor money (learning the Sony menu) Your video was my first choice, and needed to be my only choice. I really appreciate it! BTW, I use Skylum Aurora HDR software - love it! - although I am a former fan of NIK Collection, but tend to err towards stand-alone app's rather than plug-ins these days xxXxx

Hi Jay. I love your informative videos on Alpha cameras. I had a question about which creative style you use, Standard or Vivid (and any Plus or Minus values), specifically in the landscape shots you were shooting to demonstrate HDR? I ask because the color saturation of even the 0.0 Ev shots look spot on.

Hi Gary and thanks for the kind words ;) As far as what creative style I was using, yes I was actually using Vivid at the default settings. Vivid and Auto HDR really works awesome which is what I had originally set it for, but creative styles also work for raw files!

Anyone know where to find these settings on the Sony a7ii? I've been to every setting and I swear I cannot take more than two HDR photos... I need three!! How do I get these settings??!

Do I have to use raw for the bracket shot in order to have HDR? What if I don't? I use JPG most of the time
You can use jpeg yes, but I would recommend raw quality for the best results possible.

I would not leave it on all the time personally. It's taking 3 shots and that will wear on your shutter a bit, plus it takes a second to process and that slows stuff down. Mostly, it's not good for portraits and other things I find... All the best, Jay

Quick question - I’ve been learning hdr for real estate photography and I’ve been finding that my merged exposures (-3,0,+3) often come out looking like my middle exposure, if I were to just boost shadows and reduce highlights. I’m using Lr Classic to process at the moment. Any advice you can offer? I also shoot w/ an a7R.
Hi Chris. For real estate photography you are going to want the most natural look possible in my opinion. Therefore, your images should look a lot like the regular exposure, except the highlight and shadow detail should be dialed in a bit so the highlights are not completely blow out and the shadows are not clipping out a lot of details the viewer would want to see. If you can get away with using a single frame and then just adjusting in Lightroom I would absolutely do that instead of HDR. HDR is really only for when you can't do that with a single frame due to an extreme dynamic range scene. Like a darker room with huge bright windows for example. A regular scene the camera should be able to capture fine with a single exposure. For HDR I usually us -2,0,+2 which usually works for most scenes...
Jay SonyAlphaLab thanks for the advice!! Yeah I guess I haven’t had any really sunny days when I’ve been working on them, so the dynamic range hasn’t been too extreme. Never crossed my mind that was why the 2 methods were coming out so similar, makes total sense! I’ll keep working on it and see how it goes when it’s much brighter outside. Hi Jay thanks for your videos. My camera has DRO/Auto HDR greyed out with D-Range Optimizer also greyed out next to it. When I click it, I get a message saying "this operation or setting not available as follows: Shoot Mode, Intelligent Auto"

Hello Joya. This is because you have the camera set to AUTO MODE, you must change the camera off that mode to P for example. You also need to be in Jpeg quality for Auto HDR.

What do think of Aurora and Photomatix Pro HDR editing software?
I notice when I shoot on the Auto HDR on my rx100(mk1) it gives you 2 shots - the first seems to be an ordinary exposure and the 2nd the HDR shot - why not just give you the HDR shot ? Also how does an in camera HDR shot compare with the 3 bracketed shots merged in Lightroom ? I want to just only use my in camera Auto HDR as I just do not like fiddling around in Lightroom.

Just went to the DXO site and am a little confused. Do they sell full-blown stand-alone software or just the plugins that can be used in stand-alone or subscription software like Adobe's Lightroom?

Off the top of my head I do not know. However it doesn't really matter when using this method I explain in this video tutorial.
Help!, I am trying this on the A7Riii and when picking shots above 3, like 5 or 9, the camera is still only taking 3 shots,
ISO is set to maximum(102,000) and shutter min to 1/16th but the shutter on the three shots are around 100, 125.., this problem is driving my crazy!
EDIT: Solved, though its continuous, you still need to keep your finger on the shutter otherwise it just takes 3 shots!, what a crappy design, why would you risk camera shake further by keeping your finger on the shutter.
Use Self Timer with Bracketing ;) This way you won't need to touch the camera other than to initiate the bracket sequence... MENU → (Camera Settings1) → [Bracket Settings]
@@Jason_Hermann Thank you, I found out that though, that continuous bracketing lowers colour depth on each shot, I checked the files sizes and they are smaller, seems to downgrade from 14bit to 12bit, weird why they would do that.
Yeah, but honestly because you are combining several images anyway to create an HDR composite, I don't think it matters much at all. Please try it out and see for yourself ;)

I have rx100 M3 and there's not such option "bracket settings", to chose self timer for bracketing. I'm forced to manually push and hold the button to shoot 3 and more exposures, which creates random shake and smear. now I need to buy a remote shutter release.
Yeah, that sucks.... The self timer with bracket feature was a welcomed upgrade to the newer models.

I would say give it a try for sure! -2,0,+2 to start and see what happens. I'm not sure how fast it moves, so that might be an issue...
Jpeg dosent support above 8 bit color, heif supports 10 bit. 8 bit isnt hdr so this video is flawed.
This video was made when heif was not an option, so Raw would be the preferred method when this video was made for real HDR's. Auto HDR, yes heif would be the way to go if you have that option on your camera. Again, this video is from a while ago now... All the best, Jay

Excellent explaination although some of your manually processed HDR photos looked overprocessed and unnatural for my tastes.
Ah yes, very subjective editing with HDR photography... Some people prefer the natural look, some go crazy surreal, I tend to go in the middle I call exaggerated reality. :)

Hello, The EV number is the Exposure Value. Meaning 0 is a "correct" exposure according to the camera. -1 would mean 1-stop under exposed and +1 would mean 1 stop over exposed. It does not really have anything to do with aperture or shutter speed directly, it's the measurement of the exposure from the cameras perspective and it lets you know what it sees. Does that make sense?

I have set my auto Hdr on as default. It takes very nice pics with brilliant dynamic range straight out of the camera.
I have noticed that without HdR turned on higlights are blown out in most of the pictures. I am not a hardcore photographer and only edit the photos on my phone.

@Jason_Hermann the only issue is Hdr doesn't work properly if subject is moving so I will have to switch between settings.

Lightroom actually has an HDR merge option, never tried it, but its something similar, like your 3rd party version, right? Maybe the built in LR version has less options.
The HDR Merge in Lightroom opens the images into photoshop which has an HDR Merge feature. I honestly have not used that in forever, because I much prefer the software I use.

Sorry it turns out the A7iv does not have Auto HDR for some strange reason. Therefore you would need to do the more complicated, but much better method that I demonstrate in this video....

Great tutorial! Thanks Jay! On another subject, I am suddenly seeing an indicator on my screen when I first switch to Shutter mode that says, "Tv". I don't know why. Have I selected a setting without realizing it, that causes this?
Shutter priority mode is the same as TV(Time Value) mode. The term TV is mainly found on Canon cameras.
Wonderful explanation as always, Jay! With the benefits of bracketing for RAW shooters, is there any reason why I shouldn't always have this option on when I'm shooting non-moving objects (besides the extra post-processing step)?
Thank you for the kind words and to be clear, HDR is really only to be used when the scene has so much dynamic range that a single frame exposure won't do the job. You know, either the highlights or shadows will be clipped with a single exposure requiring the extra info via bracketing.
Hi Jay. Thankyou. Excellent explanation. I currently use a D7200 and handheld bracketing at 5 different ev's, but I'm looking to this camera for long treks where weight of backpack is a factor. My hands are steady and it works fine handheld. I even print and sell some of my 16x12 and 20x16 inch prints, purely locally for 'pocket money'. I post-process (jpegs, not RAW), blending with an excellent program called Photomatix. Plus a little Photoshop Elements. Please tell me, should I expect to have replicates of similar repeatability of scenes, given my steady hands, by using bracketing on the Sony RX100, but also handheld (for unexpected quick on-the-hike shot opportunities)?? Almost entirely landscapes. I appreciate a tripod and timer setting or remote is better, but I will definitely want to shoot handheld on the trails. I always shoot in A priority and fixed ISO. Hello Gelet, Yes you can absolutely get killer HDR shots with he RX100 hand held. The sensor is only 1" and the lens has optical stabilization, so the vibration effect is way less than with a larger sensor camera like D7200. Plus you have steady hands like myself, so I can attest to great hand held HDR shots. Even some with slower shutter speeds. @@Jason_Hermann Hi Jay. Another question if that's okay. One thing that's making me hesitate is the number of bracketing shots I'll be able to take on one battery charge. Given that I'd be using manual bracketing (5 exposure levels). Assume all would be at 24mm, so no zoom use. This is making me very uncertain that I can rely on this camera when hiking far from charge points for several days. I can carry a couple of extra batteries of course. But one is limited as to how many lithium batteries one can carry on international flights to Europe. So, a limiting factor. Obviuosly I'm used to 1000+ shots on my D7200. I realise it would be far less. But, how much less? Especially when manual bracketing. Thanks.
Can I use Aurora HDR? I read it is the best for Mac and I use a MacBook Pro.

I tried your method to shoot jpeg HDR, but I ended up having two images with different exposure, instead of one combined image. What have I done wrong? Appreciate your advice, thanks.
Hello Alley Cat. You are doing it correctly. The camera provides you with the Auto HDR combined exposure, and also a single regular exposure when you use this feature. This way if the AutoHDR comes out blurry or something, at least you still have a regular exposure of the scene. So having the two images is correct ;)

@@AlleyCat888 The first image should be the normal exposure, and the second image should the Auto HDR. If you are not seeing much of a difference, then try changing the Auto HDR EV spread to a higher value like 5 or 6 for example...
