I was in the audience of this show as a child w/ my family. She was FANTASTIC! App. 20 yrs later , I was working backstage of a show and got to meet her several times. One of the great honors and memories of my life. She was funny and brassy and REAL! RIP to the greatest musical star of Broadway!
There will never be another singer like Ethel Merman. She was an outstanding performer and I miss her. She was one of Broadway's greatest stars, and I miss her.
Thanks to re-runs of the Ed Sullivan show on TV, I gained an appreciation of stars such as Ethel Merman. Watching in 2023.
Ethel Merman (January 16, 1908 - February 15, 1984) was an American actress and singer. Known primarily for her belting voice and roles in musical theatre, she has been called "the undisputed First Lady of the musical comedy stage."
I think she and Mary Martin share that title.
William Caron: Nope... Just Ethel
WOW - Ethel looks and sounds fabulous!!!
No messing about, she just belts it out!
More More More... we want more!
"The show must go on."
@Changojoni What a wonderful story! She was always one of my favorites when I was growing up in the 50s and 60s. Miss her and her voice!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY , QUEEN!
Glad you enjoyed the story. As I recall, this show was a 90 minute special dedicated to the music of Irving Berlin. The Supremes were also on it and did a "duet w/ Merman from "Call Me Madam" They did the songs " You're just in love / I hear music and there's no one there".
The best!
Force of nature
LOVE Ethel Merman!
Some places, that are designed for stuff like this, have good sound reverb so that singers don't need mics. When I was in choir and had to do a solo, a lot of the time I didn't have a mic. Ethel just has a very powerful voice I think. But you're right, very, very vibrato.
She was married to Ernest Borgnine for ONE MONTH back in 1964. Ernest is still alive and making movies at age 94.
my talent show plays this song every year for the opening
I wish the full version was somewhere. I like this arrangement. I think this was from 1968.
That was so short. If I had to choose between this version or of e annie get your gun version, I would definitely choose the annie get your fun version
Julian Stewart: Ethel owned the song much better
she was and still is one of the worlds greatest talents, if you can't understand that, then get over yourself....there are none of the newer artists who can compare to her.
🎤🎹🎼🎻🪗🎷🥁🎺🎛📯🎸📢🔊🎵 "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, World " 🤠 Yup❕ G~G. 🗳☑🇺🇸.
@mrspatrickcampbell of course he was
I thought she forgot that she left the mod wheel up, sort of like leaving the blinker on...
@gymnastix I heard the same thing
Of course Ernest Borgnine has died since you posted this, just a few weeks ago, as a matter of fact.
But you are correct that he and Ethel Merman had a very short marriage. I read somewhere that, in Merman's biography, her chapter devoted to the marriage is a single blank page. I'm not sure if that is accurate. But it makes for a good legendary myth, anyway.
Where is the full version
You can get that same sensation from listening to Merman as you can from pulling a frightened cat's tail. You really need to broaden your musical horizons.
sounds like you do!!!
Ethel never needed a mic.
Sounds like you just dont know talent. they wrote musicals FOR Merman.
I love Ethel Merman's voice. Actually Marilyn Monroe's voice ruined it for me.
Ethel never had voice lessons.
obviously !!
Fabulous voice! I an interview by Gene Shalit w/ Mary Martin, she stated she never practiced or did vocal exercises. Where's the full song fro this show?
Their marriage probably didn't last because she was gay which was a big secret in those days. But she had been known by other stars to try both ways, but preferred females. This is in the biograghies of other stars.
Hambone571 Hahaha! You have a vivid imagination. Merman was married four times, and was known as being man-crazy. The chances of Merman having female lovers is zero.
Actually, you didn't mention any individual or group that I can relate to. My influences include ABBA, John Denver, Patsy Cline, The Doors, Elvis, Gordon Lightfoot, Mamas and the Papas, Neil Diamond, Roxette, Glen Campbell, Simon and Garfunkel, Three Dog Night, Eva Cassidy, and Journey just to name a few.
obnoxiously endearing
Ed was said to be a homosexual!
So harsh and course sounding. Never could figure out her appeal.. Ella any day!
I tried to watch There's No Business Like Show Business starring Merman and Marilyn Monroe, but Merman's voice ruined it for me.
