Very informative! One thing that wasn't mentioned... using Sentry Mode seems to reduce your range by approximately 1 mile per hour. If you car is plugged in, it doesn't matter, but if you're leaving your car somewhere for a few days, it'll really drain your battery! Wish Sentry Mode would alert you when there's an event, but I guess in certain locations, you might be having dinner and get a lot of alerts. Thanks again for an informative video! Oh... last thing. My 2022 Tesla Model Y came with a memory stick, and it's now located in the glovebox, so that if someone should break into your car, they can't steal it! Very smart move by Tesla!
I did mention the batter drain a bit when talking about leaving it on in an airport was the example but good to bring the point home. I do really like the idea of it in the glove box as well. My Y will have that.
My wife and I just bought a 2023 model Y and your videos are absolute lifesaver. We’re both pretty tech savvy so this has taught us so much. How can I give you a tip on here you deserve every penny.
I used to use Sentry a lot. I don't use it anymore unless I'm parked in a sketchy area. It uses up 10% of my Long Range Model 3 battery per day ... and that's a heck of a lot of battery!!! The reason it uses so much of the battery is because the car's computer has to be on the whole time.
you must also be in a high traffic area? I hear the more times it has to record etc. the more battery it uses. Personally I would still use it if the 10% didn't effect me getting home.
Indeed mate. It drains about 8% of mine.. freakish amount though! Sometimes I can see that it’s literally having a good time recording almost every single minute while standing alone. And it’s not parked at Piccadilly for sure
Very helpful and informative. As you were mentioning, sentry mode burns up a lot of battery when you're parked at the airport. In my experience, about 23 miles worth of charge per day. So if you're on a one-week trip, you'll come back to not much battery if you haven't parked in a charging spot. Thanks for these great videos!
Thanks for the video man. Super informative. I didn’t know the difference between the dash and sentry. Now I do. Gonna get me a TB one for Black Friday.
Does the dash can also record your voice along with the recording footage? That would be nice since you can hear your own voice during the even while play back.
Suggesion for Tesla R&D: make the parking toggle on the right stick a trigger for the dashcam while driving. We won’t need to park the car while driving so as long as the car is moving that toggle could be used.
Talk about how the Sentry Mode Viewer doesn't always record 10 minutes, often it only records one minute segments. And the slider sometimes loops and doesn't finish the showing the full recording. Also, the red dot while it's supposed to be where the event triggered Sentry Mode, it's not always accurate. Tesla really needs to fix the Viewer!
I have never had mine recored only 1 minute. In fact while recording this the 5 minute clip was the first I have seen that short. There are a few bugs as I showed a few here but I try to just show how it works since its a tutorial not a review of the program.
Great video, thank you. This is exactly the type of detail that I need. My first Tesla comes in May 2022 TM3 LR FSD White on White 19" sport wheels, 18" winter wheel and rims.... I am off the hook psyched....
Great tutorial. Tesla should build in the option to write over the oldest events. I have a dashcam/rearview mirror and it has that built in. Thinking about putting that unit in my Model Y when I take delivery.
It does automatically erase the oldest stuff and record over it when it runs out of space. You can "save" or "lock" individual clips if you don't want them to ever get erased. All the new Tesla's come with a free 128 gig memory stick which is located in the glove box for the dash cam. They added the USB outlet in the glove box so that if someone breaks into your car, they can't just steal the storage device In order to prevent you from having a recording of their break-in.
I hate that this video is so old, but I just bought my model Y. I purchased a 2022, used and the previous owner kept original stick. One of the recommendations I got on putting a stick in was to get the largest one available. So I have a 1 TB. Is that too large? I am experiencing problems. Example, I cannot view events. Additionally, the button for dash cam says not available. The memory stick it was brand new, and I formatted it in the glove box. Any idea what my issues could be?
One of the best videos explaining sentry. If I have the sentry tab in phone app off but the sentry in car on, will it still work? Whats the purpose of sentry toggle button in the app?
Some tips on battery charging ..on my model 3 extended the charging has gon down to 230 miles after 32k mileage ..that’s 80 miles below what I paid for ..also required more charging on the road
Thank you. I think the paint should be scratch proof. Have mine since last may. Show where drive goes. Find the windows are hard to stay clear and glare free.
Didn't a tesla enthusiast make a device that plugs into the usb port and records sentry and dash cam footage as normal, but also provided a way to access it all through an app on your phone? I heard this in a video once and can't find anything on it.
can you schedule sentry mode to be active during specific hours? for example, 6am - 9am and 4pm - 8pm i'd like sentry to be on automatically, but off during the other hours to save battery.
Thanks. Anyone know a way to watch it full screen without the other four camera squares? One of those squares is completely blocking what I'm trying to see in this certain video...
In my opinion that 10 minutes of recording when you honk should be set to maybe 8 minutes before PLUS 2 minutes after honking. I often find that I honk when something is happening or just about to happen (say a car coming into my lane) but when I watch the clip there’s a bunch of footage before the event and just about none of the actual event. So now if I see something interesting while driving, I purposely what a while before I honk. Also the slow upload of dashcam videos didn’t start till after that major UI update a few months ago.
Great timing... I was just saving and reviewing some footage from the dashcam of a guy in his truck (ICEing me)swerving at me numerous times.. then following me home tailgating and high beaming the whole way. Then your video on Sentry Mode came up. Sadly, the event was at night and raining and I am having a very hard time seeing his plate number. Anyone have ideas of how to see his plate number better?
Thanks for putting this together especially after the v11 rollout. Did you notice that the alert for new software update no longer pops up? I noticed it was moved as shown in you video-time stamp 11:28.

I just got my new tesla and wondering if I need to subscribe to their internet service to use all these surveillance features. My buddy says you can not really use the camera remotely if you don't have internet services, just want to confirm. Since I am a new owner, I have the internet services for a 30 days for free. Thank you.
Great video, thanks for the tutorial. One thing I’ve missed.. does that Tesla has a storage space? Or do you need to buy external storage and plug it on USB ports to be able to record Dashcam or Sentry videos?
Hey zucchi! I'm not sure about all models and where the USB port is located but in my model 3… it's in the glove box, on the right hand side and Tesla did provide a thumb drive already plugged in. Hope this helps
This is a good question. I used to fill up for sure. I had that issue a lot with my first zip drive back in 2019 but maybe that has changed. My current drive is so big I wont find out.
I believe “saved” dashcam clips will be there forever (till you delete them yourself.) If the drive fills, I believe it will wipe the oldest and record the newest clips- likely the same for sentry, but with a 250Gb SSD I haven’t tested that. I do format it occasionally to avoid problems from corruption, which can occur from time to time.
Very informative. So if sentry mode is off eg the car is at work and “safe”. Will it ever record an event, eg someone bumps the car? Can the alarm also still be triggered?
How do you save a dashcam footage after you park the car? I know you can save the dash cam while driving by honking the horn but how do you save it after you park the car and view the previous video. . I remember with the older UI, you can hold the camera button on the top of the screen but not anymore with this UI.
so i bought the SAMSUNG T7 Portable SSD its been about 4 weeks and sentry mode crashed on me and had to reformat again (model3..2021) ...is this normal?
I just picked up my car yesterday 😊. I plan on putting a dark tint on the windows. Do you know if this will compromise the effectiveness of the sentry mode? I realize the cameras are mounted externally, but are the sensors that trigger them inside of the cabin? I just wanna make sure that I'm not gonna mess anything up.
No, tinting won’t affect the external cameras, nor the one at the rear view mirror which records internal activities eg an intrusion happened - by that time your external cameras would have captured the activities.
Here in Europe we do NOT see to have the option of "View Live camera via Mobile App", even with the latest update. So we can NOT watch the Sentry recorded video clips via mobile phone. Do you know why?

Hi when I first bought my Tesla model Y it had the green light charm in it but after the last big update now I don’t have it anymore do you have any ideas on how I get it back?
You may have to reformat your storage device (if it somehow got corrupted.) You do that through the menu, Security. But before you do that. I would do a reboot of the car's computer. On a Model 3 or a Model Y, you press the 2 circles on the steering wheel at the same time for 5 or 10 seconds until the screen goes blank. That may fix the problem. You should do that any time your car is acting strange. I'm not sure how to do it on a Model S or Model X, but I'm sure you could Google it.
I have been experiencing a bug where the sentry mode displays event alerts after I get back to the car but when I click to view them, nothing loads. I was told by service that that's a "firmware" bug and was curious if you or anyone have come across that.
If you are referring to the screen staying black yes that can happen. A few fixes are to format your flash drive again, restart the onboard computer and if that doesnt work try to talk Tesla into pushing you the update again. I have had all those things work and none of them so good luck!
More than likely a drive problem, the memory stick or SSD you’re using. Memory sticks have limited life. SSDs are better but can get a corrupted file system. My T5 SSD stopped working but a reformat in my laptop fixed it.

I have been using T7 since last Sep. 2021 and it does not have skipping issue as T5’s, and very reliable so far.
@@jinhocha01 Thanks Jin!
No problem!!
Will it start to overwrite older files if you don’t format it?
Only on the sentryview stuff it wont. The dashcam is overwritten ever 60 minutes
Hi when I first bought my Tesla model Y it had the green light charm in it but after the last big update now I don’t have it anymore do you have any ideas on how I get it back?
You may have to reformat your storage device (if it somehow got corrupted.)
You do that through the menu, Security.
Like Daniel said its the drive. A reformat should fix that
then.. you bring it to the Police station, then they'll tell you to fill out the report, and claim they'll take a look at it.. 😅 😂 🤣
the key word is "claim"...no most of the cases are people posting to social media to find the person
And I am still sitting on Version 10.8.1...
Hopefully you catch the next one.
@@CfTesla Thank you!
No video on my phone
Do you have data?
Is Sentry Mode on in your car?
@@Resist4 I was not getting your video feed at first. Maybe my internet conn was funky. Thanks for tips Dan
We don’t have video on the phone in Australia yet. That’s a feature which isn’t available in all countries unfortunately yet.
I have about 5% of my portfolio in Uranium bitcoin any advice on any other Crypto currency that I can grow my $300k capital to a million dollars?
Investing into crypto now with the current volatility of the market will be risky for an average investor.
Crypto is a very lucrative way of making money when you are on the guidance of an expert trade broker.
battery killer
My sentry mode hasn't worked in months.
More than likely a drive problem, the memory stick or SSD you’re using.
Memory sticks have limited life.
SSDs are better but can get a corrupted file system. My T5 SSD stopped working but a reformat in my laptop fixed it.
99% of the time its your drive like mentioned below. A new one or a reformated one should fix it.
@@CfTesla yup tried that

are there any sounds from dashcam or sentry mode?
