    EDIT - This video is by now quite old and the submission-announcement at the end is no longer open.
    HOWEVER, I still host similar contests and my more recent videos have much higher production quality than these old ones, so I recommend checking out some of the more recent stuff!
    Specifically, this video is designed to compile a lot of my older guides into one short digestible up-to-date video: ruclips.net/video/L5cf3wKkvWg/видео.html&ab_channel=Derf

      Fun video if you want to watch it. There's a guy that puts hero forge to the test on how durable they're figures are and how well they package them for shipping. So he made 2 or 3 stupid designs and made them as skinny and breakable as possible. Be really wanted the figures to break during shipping. In the end, all of them were intact

    As someone who is colorblind, I find the themes kinna nice because it saves me from the uncertainty of if these colors even go together.
    If I painted _all_ of my minis myself they would all be very monochromatic with a splash of color.

    Regarding the cartoony proportions, the models are designed to be 3d-printed as physical miniatures in (roughly) 28mm scale. So, for HeroForge's primary intended purpose, the height guide is accurate for conventional 28mm "heroic scale"

    • @Derfholm
      @Derfholm  Год назад +9

      Ayup, it's true. But you can also print models that are closer to "7ft" tall and they will generally look more like actual people than the "6ft" ones that look like Hobbits

    I've gone through my current line and looked for default settings I've missed, and change them ever so slightly. The whole point is to have custom miniatures not look alike miniatures. I find I paint my heroes like I would if they were real miniatures - undercoat, base coats, highlights and shadows which gives a more unified palette as I tweak colors in the mix to suit the character, whether it will be "dark", "neutral" or "pale". I'm usually looking for a "grim dark" Gane of Thrones kind of gritty realism, rather than bright fantasy.

  • @MuppetHell

    Regarding the themes, they're good for a base color idea for minis. When I can't think of any good color schemes I'll slap a theme onto it and work the colors around to fit what I'm going for. They're a good starting point for the color

    In addition to having no skill with the advanced posing techniques, my colorblindness makes custom color schemes quite difficult. I'm sure it's a long shot but here goes: Wêníí is a forest gnome swashbuckler (5e) archaeologist who prides himself on recovering powerful artefacts and keeping them from falling into the hands of creatures who do naughty things. He loves a good mystery and looking for secret doors and lives to pick locks and disable traps. He isn’t much on intimidating folks but would much rather talk his way out of a fight with an more powerful opponent than resort to combat. To this end, he doesn’t mind a little bit of lying now and then. His favorite tactic in combat is the ‘hit and fade’. Attack with fury and then move away before the bigger creature can hit him. I am also impressed with your skill at giving Hero Forge characters so much personality. In these 2 iterations, his expression is so life-less… I think of Wêníí as a mostly jolly fellow who would rather make friends than enemies. He’s always got a joke on his lips for his traveling companions. He spends his evenings in the pub or his study reviewing maps of far away places and esoteric ruins in front of the fire with his nez pince glasses on the end of his nose or wandering thru the wilderness looking for mushrooms. Thank you for you time in reading this little backstory.
    Here is a link to Wêníí sneaking down a corridor in Strahd’s castle: www.heroforge.com/load_config%3D34748706/ Here is Wêníí riding on his favorite mount, Bârsk: www.heroforge.com/load_config%3D37259451/ Bârsk’s name is gnomish for ‘Gruff’ and he has 2 older brothers who love to hunt trolls. I like using the themes, personally, because it's convenient for clothes and weapons to swap in with colors already applied, colors I can always change or delete later if I hate them- or do absolutely nothing with if I like them.
    Clothes and gear spawning in uncolored bothers me a lot more than when they spawn in with shit colors.

    I don't think themes are a "trap". They certainly aren't something to use on more elaborate characters, but they can be really useful for more basic character.
    I do wish there was more variety though, especially since some themes are a little too similar to each other. I think much like we occasionally get updated items, we could really use some updated themes.

    Thanks for posting this video! I had no idea you could change hand poses.
    I'm playing a Dark Elf Arcane Trickster Rogue named Alyssa. She left her village because the elders were pressuring her and her girlfriend to split up and settle down with warriors from their village instead. Her girlfriend gave in, so Alyssa fled so she can explore the world and find a new place that she can call home. Once she finds that place and finishes her adventures, her long term goal is to settle down and open up a tea & bookstore.
    We're playing in a world where dark elves are outcasts, but she's very outgoing and likes being the center of attention when they stop at taverns. I play her as more of a bard in those situations, despite her not being very good at it and frequently failing. She just tries to put on a smile and do her best. She wants to put herself out there and meet more friends.
    Her outgoing personality hides her best abilities. She has very high stealth and sleight of hand. She uses spells like Mage Hand and Disguise Self to get into places she shouldn't and steal from those who treat others poorly. She's also quick to come to someone's defense when they're being put down. In combat, she usually attacks from range with a shortbow

    For actual rookies watching this:
    Please take everything Derf said with a grain of salt as most of it was their pet peeves and being slightly elitist. The themes are great for a baseline, and you can use them to paint significantly faster with the fill tool. And people almost never notice he default hand.

    • @ShugoAWay

    • @plaidpvcpipe3792
      @plaidpvcpipe3792 Год назад

      @@ShugoAWayI don’t think the price matters here, bc this is talking about making heroforge characters to look good in the software.
      If you’re making a character to buy and print, you probably shouldn’t really even bother with the heroforge painting, at least IMO. And the default proportions are good for a miniature.

  • @larabelioso2338
    @larabelioso2338 5 месяцев назад +1

    The themes are only good if you don't accidently wanne leave a part unpainted, like a armor piece hidden on your wrist, or a small gap of a ring

  • @ghastlit040
    @ghastlit040 2 года назад +1

    The only actual use for the themes is for looking for changed colors that aren't available in the main selection. To avoid all the excess colors that you don't want from coming back when you change clothes or gear on your mini, all you need to do is individually copy the hex codes of the color you want, open a new tab and temporarily paste them in the search bar, go back to the Hero Forge tab and click the back button until you reach the point before selected the theme, duplicate or select a new color and replace all it's hex codes with the ones you pasted in the the new tab. You can then do whatever you want from there.

    I’m actually in favor of how HeroForge proportions their models, at a distance (or if something is small) people are going to want to draw their attention to 3 places on a figure, the face and hands, even some classical sculptures follow this idea. And since they’re supposed to essentially be board game pieces in their final state, I’m willing to give some allowance on stylization.
    That said, I agree wholeheartedly about the other pitfalls people using HeroForge fall into, unless y’all’s characters are dual wielding or are just holding stuff in general, pose your hands. (But in the case of holding weapons, it does look better in a lot of circumstances to give them the alternate grip, makes it look more natural)

    • @ShugoAWay
      @ShugoAWay Год назад

      Yeah not sure what his obsession is with photo realistic proportions for a mini...they are supposed to be slightly exaggerated to show the important parts (yes the eyes are big but that is so you can notice the color at a distance on a game board, yes the old options are less detailed but those also can be useful if you are trying to draw attention towards something more important

    I also wanted to send over one of my Miniatures to see if anything can be improved with him:
    Here’s Bellphius, A former desperate scientist who made a deal with a sinister demigod warlock. As a result he’s attained Demigod-hood and a vastly monstrous and animalistic appearance akin to that of a hybrid of a dog and bear. Now a prominent member of the warlock’s cult, he does what he can to further the cult’s (or his own) power.
    He himself is highly dedicated to his work. Above all else he values the pursuit of scientific progress, and as a demigod, has little regard for human things such as "morality" or "ethics." Believing that progress is best attained when (and especially) at the expense of others. He’s willing to sacrifice humans and others in the name of furthering his experiments, which at the moment is building a large army of robots possessed by souls. He works in a very scrapmetal/steampunk environment, and was partially inspired by sundowner from MGRR.

    Hope that wasn’t a long infodump! Really enjoyed your vids, and I hope he has a chance at being picked, lol!
    (Edit: right, wanted to mention, the glowing orange decals are meant to be visually representative of his ability, which is a magically-enhanced regeneration serum that courses through his veins and bloodstream)
