    Coming from an amateur Heroforge user, this is very helpful. I absolutely suck at making custom colors, and I will be using this in my future models. Thank you for this Derf!

    I think more importantly than the fact you're giving out these colors, I appreciate that they're all named, making it easier to keep track of what can be used for what.

    ~4:05 - Cognac = CONE-yack. It's a type of liquor. And if that's the case, it's nowhere NEAR the inspired color, which makes the name TWICE was obnoxious. >:V

    For skin, I personally prefer making it's roughness be at max and disabling the skin "box" - it works a lot better with dark/dramatic lighting I find

    • @Derfholm
      @Derfholm  Год назад +4

      That's some dry skin..........
      but nahahah in all seriousness I've seen that done before, it works p well, I agree. It isn't my own favourite but it has a nice style

    • @jayjonesrgaming
      @jayjonesrgaming Год назад +4

      I do this too! I find the default roughness setting for skin makes models look sweaty so I usually turn the roughness up. Turning skin roughness down works well for mer-people, reptilian people, water genasi, etc. I also disable the skin box on a lot of non-human skin tones like orcs or Drow otherwise the red undertone mixes w the green/purples and makes it look off.

    A shortcut I use when looking for a color I won't have to reconstitute by hand (no pro tears) is to change the material of a default color. Hair to leather, plastic to fabric, skin to metal. Interesting things come out

  • @tuurik.1084

    Something I figured out for human skin, is to:
    - raise the mid and low tone roughness to 60, except for palms where everything is 55 (compare ur palms to the backs of ur hands, they tend to be shinier. palms r also paler and, in the high points, pinker)
    - raise fuzziness to 20-30 for everything except palms, lips and tissue inside the body - humans have hair on almost all skin
    - bump up the pinkness of the highlight a bit on the face as well, faces tend to be slightly more pink than the rest of the body, at least on light skin
    - for eye socket colours u can bump down the roughness as well
    - for the lashline, I use the HF guts colour, i just change the colour to almost white. for the lower waterline, same, but change the highlight colour to a hair colour.
    - for a no makeup lip look, i practically always use the ombre lip decal, with a no-fuzz skin tone on the decal and a colour matched HF Guts swatch (shiny!) on the actual lip.
    - i like to turn the lowlight of a hairline decal into a darker version of the skintone to simulate the skin shining through. for eyebrows, the lowlight can straight-up be the same as the mid- or highlight of the skintone.

    Do you have any tips for colored metals, or are those just kind of universal with the metals tips you included here? I love using vibrantly colored metals in a good portion of my models but can't really get it to stick in a semi-realistic way without feeling too dull or out of place.

    • @Derfholm
      @Derfholm  Год назад +4

      the issue is that Metal makes colours extremely saturated which in turn makes any 'coloured steel' potentially look ridiculous if you're not careful. Personally I prefer very faded colours for those kinda metals, and a perfect example of that is the Rune Blue colour I use on the model at the start & end of the video. Link to that one is also in the description so you can take it and check out the base Rune colour for a direct example

    I was wondering, how did you rearrange your Color Library? its looks like it's organized by colors and neatly classified! Did you create each color individually one by one by color type or is there something I'm missing on hero forge features? Mine is a real mess....

      You're correct. There is no way to move colours around- meaning that if you want them organized you have to meticulously SAVE them in order. And yes, it is exactly as annoying and tedious as you can imagine

    I'm not sure I'd go quite so far as to call the default colors "terrible"... as long as you're okay with your plastic miniature looking like a plastic miniature.
    Doesn't take too much tweaking to make them look a lot better, though.
