For y'all who have followed me for over a year a lot of these tricks probably won't be new, but at a certain point I had no choice but to compile them in a more up to date video Now it'd be really unfortunate if Face Customizer comes out on thursday............................................................
Hero forge: "We can't get hair designs to stack because it will cause clipping" Derf: Then literally uses clipping to get the hair to look the way they want
Ok, so the reason why the default model looks like a child is because they are in something called Heroic Scale. It is a style in which the characters have exaggerated head, legs, and hands. You can see it a lot on games workshop models, especially imperial guard. It's purpose is not only to make models sturdier, but it also is a lot easier to paint and a lot more readable when looking at a model from across a table.
My best tip: Colours look _vastly_ better when you shift another layer into another tone. For example: Plain green fabric does not look as good as green fabric with a blueish low tone and a yellowish high tone. Just making low and high tones a darker or lighter version of the base colour doesn't necesarilly give a whole lot of depth.
Started watching these videos only a few days ago and I've been able to make some really great minis because of you. Character's I thought I couldn't make now look better than I imagined
This is really interesting. I've always just been a really casual Hero Forge user, haven't even actually made a figure I'd buy. Was not quite satisfied with how the default humans look and I had no idea you can customize it to this degree, yours look so much better than just going with default options.
hey dude, i found your channel a few days ago and it really opened my eyes to better ways to create figures. my friends have asked me to redesign a few of their characters bc of it, so thank you, and if you can keep posting! i love your content
Man I learn something new every time I watch one of your videos. It might just be a small thing but, I never would have thought about "Hamhunching" (double layering a stout over a stumpy model) to get that Dwarf look. 👍
I've got a tip for anthro characters, especially felines: When using vertically slit eyes, it's a good idea to increase the pupil size to make them look dilated, or at the very least, fill the visible retina rather than looking like botched witcher eyes. I wish we had options for dilating/contracting pupils to make a character look ferocious/adorable, but for now pupil size works. On the same topic, slightly adjust the horizontal position of each eyeball so they look slightly crossed. When characters are looking at something in front of them, their eyes won't stare directly forward (a.k.a a thousand yard stare.) Usually I adjust it by about .5 on each eyeball. Also, max out roughness on fur, or at least increase it, you don't want a coat of fur to look greasy and reflective which it will with the default 50%.
WE DON'T MENTION THAT FIRST PART But ye that was very much the point. I know most of my viewers will already know these tricks, but I had to eventually compile them for the broader and newer audience's sake
One of my friends told me that the thing he didn't like about HeroForge is that the characters all look a bit "cartoony" - oversized heads, hands, features etc. The tips in this video get rid of most of those problems. And kitbashing's going to fix the hands. Many thanks for compiling this quick guide vastly improving the models.

I've come to realize the ol' if there's a will there's a way with HF. I made a character that needed a long headband, so I manipulated horns and colored em cloth! Using them as hair though would've taken me months more to figure out on my own, so thanks!
@@Derfholm well, I started forging seriously when it was already a thing, and then I was eager to try it at its non-pro release. Obviously it would be nice ti have all the layering available on one mini, but that could be said about anything. Maybe I'm just an usual nerd😁

At the very beginning of tip #2, how did you turn those spheres invisible? I’ve been using HeroForge for a couple years now but I haven’t ever been able to figure it out or even what to look up to find that information. And I’m sorry if this is common sense info
It's a small glitch wherein if you put an object that can be twisted in a hand, you; Twist the object in posing Press the trashcan icon on the object you just posed to reset the posing Then Ctrl-Z (undo) It will disappear but the hand posing around the nonexistent item remains
The new tiny glitch is very fresh so I haven't gotten around to making any proper guide on that- and that's assuming they won't immediately patch it. I'm afraid not on that one. As for making objects float in the air, I have an older video called something like "Heroforge - Latest News & Updates" where I go over it in the middle of the video! As for floating PEOPLE - I'd recommend you just pick up a link with a model that's already floating and go from there. There's plenty of em around. I have one or two of those in almost all of my videos
@@Derfholm - The point is that I want to learn to do it myself. I can't find anywhere that shows me how, and individual creators never post instructions, and can't be contacted in any way. They shouldn't patch it; they need to make it a feature-- especially since they have yet to add an imp familiar to their lineup.
As a relative newbie who has made one halfway-decent double-stacked model (and I'm really only using it to add a bit more texture to her hair and make her already tattered pants even more so), it annoys me that they don't just use the same origin point for the two models or at least offset their origin points from the middle by a nice, easy-to-work-with amount. As is, it seems that no matter how close together I get the two models, they're slightly misaligned... and then I move them both two ticks to the right and they're not only still slightly misaligned, but they're slightly misaligned differently from how they were slightly misaligned before. (The slight misalignment isn't the issue here; it's the seeming inconsistency. Having that slight misalignment reduces flickering and allows for some neat effects like split-tone dagger blades, especially on something with prominent and oddly-shaped central ridges like the shard dagger and Nature's Fury.)
Anybody from Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, DC Comics, TMNT, Dead or Alive, horror villains, Transformers, Marvel, Tekken, real life people or anybody that’s a recognizable figures. I’m having a hard time trying to make a shaved/buzz cut, any suggestions?
Something I've been trying to do for a while now is try to make an arachne character but I'm still struggling and I was wondering if you had any ideas or tips I might be able to use?? Though I'm fairly limited with what I can do with not having pro and all🥲😅
You won't need anything Pro to make an arachnid character, but generally they are indeed quite hard to make. I'd recommend clipping various horns through the face, both for the face-pincers as well as additional eye-stalk horns through the forehead if you want multiple eyes. Then, extra arms and bone-wings can make for really good additional legs & arms
For y'all who have followed me for over a year a lot of these tricks probably won't be new, but at a certain point I had no choice but to compile them in a more up to date video
Now it'd be really unfortunate if Face Customizer comes out on thursday............................................................
