As cheesy as it is, this one has a soft spot in my heart. Released in 96, I was 15 at the time and excited for it's release so I partially view it with rose tented glasses. I loved the updated theme along with the Rob Zombie song. I fondly remember the fade to black at the end while sitting in the theater, Snake's voice coming in with "welcome to the human race" right before the end credits..... and then the guy sitting right in front of me looks at his date and says "that was stupid"

Love Escape from LA. Saw it in the theater four times. Got it on VHS and then on DVD. Own a copy of the original score. I acknowledge the faults with this flick, and can see how it’d be considered a “bad” movie. But, it’s fine by me. Want to give a shout out to Shirley Walker (R.I.P.). John Carpenter is a synth lord. Walker, however, was able to blend his distinct sound with a more sweeping orchestral score that totally works for the movie. It also works listening to it independent of the movie. Woman was a boss level composer. Once again, R.I.P. Also, just wanted to say, really enjoyed Ghost of Mars too. Best adaptation of Doom the big screen ever got.

I remember waiting to see this in the theater. The original is a classic on the basis of story alone and further justifies it with the performances and filmmaking. The behind-the-scenes features on HBO looked great. And then the movie started and just...... sat there. Like, it feels a lot slower than it looks. And it was a lazier remake than one would have thought possible. People talk about some cheap sequels looking like fan films, and none are more guilty than this one. Kurt Russell and John Carpenter got together to have a few beers and allegedly make a movie

I don't think you get what the definition of a cash grab is. ALOT of people seem to fart out that word about things that are clearly not cash grabs because they don't really know what they're talking about.
Escape from New York was made in 1981 and was not successful in anyway shape or form. Escape from L.A. was made in 1996 14 years later. A cash grab is made a couple of years after not over a decade later, besides ALL of Carpenter's movies were massive flops except for Halloween.
Halloween II was a cash grab. Halloween was made in 1978 and Halloween II was out 1981.

I think that the reason why John Carpenter made Escape from LA was mostly because of in my opinion & RedLetterMedia’s opinion Hollywood was not exactly kind to John Carpenter in terms of studios and this movie was what John Carpenter thought of Hollywood. And also you guys should do a bad movie roast on one of John Carpenter’s other movies called Vampires which is based on a 1990 horror novel by John Steakley. It stars James Woods, Daniel Baldwin, & shockingly Sheryl Lee (aka Laura Palmer from Twin Peaks). A lot of people have said that this movie is a guilty pleasure mostly because of James Woods’ performance. Even though the author did like the movie he has said that the film had a lot of the books’ dialogue and none of his plot. So yeah definitely do a bad movie roast on that movie.

The first thing people forget is that, LA is not a prison. Its a "free state", meaning those deported have lost all rights as a citizen to the United States and have to live there. It has not government structure, no economy, so it would be just living to survive. If they still use money its probably scarce. If anything its in trade or more "liquid" meaning gold and gems. New York on the other hand was a prison. thats why there was no guns food anything. So thats why in this movie they have guns and factions everything.

Compared to the first one, it's like a Snake Plissken Saturday Morning Cartoon.
I still like that the surf scene was filmed at Schlitterbahn.

This is one of those movies that should’ve been really good and had no excuse to be as ridiculous as it ended up being. I had such high hopes, being someone who loves the original, and writhing the first five or ten minutes of the movie (if that), I pretty much went, “Oh, no. Motherfucker…” It has some great ideas within it and a lot of potential (especially with a lot of it being unnervingly relevant today), but it just wastes them at almost every turn. And I say this as a big fan of John Carpenter-that man has made some of my all time favorite films.

You guys should see Stacy Keach’s hair in the horror anthology film, Body Bags (1993). John Carpenter presents each story as a ghoul and directs a couple of the stories.

  • @snaek29
    @snaek29 7 месяцев назад +1

    1) Firstly, this movie is not set in our world, so the LA depicted in it is not even remotely connected to our LA.
In this parallel universe, in 1988 there was a war against an alliance of China and the Soviet Union. This included a Battle for Leningrad in World War III (which is where Plissken lost his eye). The entire West Coast of the US becomes a no-man's land, and the nation's population is gradually being driven insane by nerve gas that was used on US soil during the events of WW3. None of which happened in our world obviously.
This of course, being the main driving factor for the maximum security prison on Manhattan Island in New York City, a desperate ploy to contain the millions of people who were gradually becoming mentally unstable from the nerve gas attack (and is why in the first movie so many people behave so strangely). Also of course in this alternative reality, the president of the US was attacked by terrorists on Air Force One and captured by a crime gang active in that prison (which also never happened on our Earth). So Escape from LA is a CONTINUATION of the events that happened in Plisskin's universe, including the events of the previous movie obviously. So your continual comments of "LA is not that bad" has nothing to do with the LA of Snake's universe. It's A DIFFERENT WORLD ENTIRELY from ours. That is the point of Plisskin's universe. It isn't ours but a way more fucked up one where things played out very differently in their recent history.
    2) The shark is a fake shark which is outside of universal studios that collapsed into the sea (although "yes" the special effect sequence is terrible regardless).
    3) The problem with Snake Plisskin (and which is something that the movie addresses several times in throw away lines) is that his "legend" has greatly exceeded the man himself... especially following the population learning about his escape from New York (which was until he did it deemed to be impossible, expanding his already substantial legend even further). These stories have become ridiculous and exagerrated far beyond anything he actually did. They think he is a tall hulking man, impossible to kill, a living legend, a hero, and mass murdering killer etc etc.
But the reality is anything but... he is just a ex-soldier veteran, who just happened to be one of the few who survived World War 3 and with his mind still intact. After fighting in this war and returning to the US Snake is disillusioned by the very country he fought for and by the government who sent him and his friends into the meat grinder, and in his disgust turns mercenary/criminal building up his reputation in the underworld and becoming a symbol of "anti-government" to the people... and who now has attained a legendary status among the population of the US simply for always refusing to lay down and daring to always survive.
So the "henchmen" are not stupid, because they genuinely think that Plisskin could kill them all easily without breaking a sweat, and that they wouldn't have a chance if he chose to shoot them (which of course is not true, they had him at a severe disadvantage and likely would have killed him easily if they had just opened fire). Snake uses this peceived "legend" he has attained to his advantage to gain the upper hand, and the henchmen actually genuine think that Plisskin is being benevolent by "giving them a chance" by not drawing until the can hits the ground... which he exploits to his advantage (like he often does).
    4) Snake isn't stupid either. There was no reason whatsoever for him to think they were holograms, and was perfectly fine with dying then and there and killing the president rather than be used as a patsy again like the last time. Also, there was no way for him to know the first clip had fake bullets in it (credit to the bad guys for knowing Snake would kill them and predicting it though).
Near the end, Snake was not fooled either. If he genuinely believed that the virus was real he wouldn't had been using a hologram (how would he be given the vaccine before the timer ran out if he was hidden somewhere else not there to recieve the vaccine?). He played he fool to sell the con as by that point he had learned from Hershe earlier that it was very likely a fake tactic being used on him to do the job. Plisskin wasn't tricked... he was playing them all from the moment he walked out of the crashed helicopter.
BTW... that was the "give away" that it wasn't really Snake walking out of the crashed helicopter (he had obviously already jumped out before it crashed and was already using the hologram). They should have suspected (as should have you guys) when he walked out of a impossible crash without a scratch on him... except again, it was Snake using his fake legendary status to trick others into believe that he could survive such an impossibility. Using it to his advantage again, this being just another exploit he used to beat the odds and turn things in his own favour. THIS IS a major part of Plisskin's character, exploiting his legendary status against those trying to manipulate and kill him. This being a useful weapon for him in his tool kit in this dystopian world, especially among those suffering from the mental effects of the nerve gas on the West Coast and many of whom are now either insane or unstable.
    5) "Yes" the fucking surfing scene was fucking stupid. Easily the worst thing in the entire movie, I hate it and it should have been cut from the film. The fire explosion in the back of the helicopter didn't make any sense (I suspect that there was meant to be a glass plate between the front and back seat but they forgot or something) and the hang gliding shit looked dumb and was pointless for the plot and should have been cut. The character of the presidents daughter was terribly done and "Eddie" was a disappointing character overall... they should have tweaked both these characters to make them better. I agree on all these points. I also agree the the "big bad guy" isn't really all that great or interesting. All 3 characters should have undergone more rewrites to improve them into something better and more compelling.
But (in my opinion) the basketball scene was fine. Firstly, they can't just throw Plisskin into a gladiator arena as it's already been done in the last movie and secondly (again) Plisskin's legend supercedes him... no matter who and what they put up as a fighter against him, the people in the crowd would still expect him to win regardless because of all the "legendary" stories they have all heard about him. So they needed something they knew he would fail at that was not just shooting or fighting and it needed to be done publicly in front of his subjects so Plisskin's legend would transfer to "the man who killed him". And why would Plisskin know how to lay basketball? It is something that doesn't fit the legends and could (would likely) finally kill him.
It isn't perfect of course, ad they probably could have come up with something better. But I still don't think it was as bad as you guys were making is out as being. It was fine.
Escape from LA definitely doesn't hold a candle to Escape from New York (obviously). It is the inferior movie. But watching your review, I could help but think that you guys were mocking a lot of things that was not the movie's fault but things that you all missed entirely. As a number of your criticisms and mockeries were you guys missing the point of the scenes (not the surfing one though... that's totally legit. No argument).
