Also, want to UPDATE:
My 23andme results said that of my French&German, I am completely SWISS!! They detected Switzerland as the country of origin! I asked my family about this and I'm apparently a direct relative of a Swiss Baron (Christoph von Graffenried, 1st Baron of Bernberg) that immigrated to North Carolina in the mid-1700s. So there's that! :p
@@ciromiguel7748 Thank you
how did you get the update?
I just got an email about it and then checked the website and saw the differences

Thank you so much Brian!

My wife just got me this kit for a christmas gift. My Mother was adopted and tells me stories of my natural father being adopted aswell...so for someone in my situation a test like this can hopefully teach me alot. Very excited to see the results.

This is really interesting and I love all of your knowledge as it really helps. My sister and cousin have taken Ancestry DNA test but I feel reluctant to take any DNA tests because everyone says it is inaccurate and just a way for the government to track you through your DNA but 23 and Me looks really cool and I really enjoyed watching your video 😊😊
Definitely try it out! I love how 23andme updates and constantly has better more accurate science based results.
You could still be Irish as well. The recent ancestor locations are crowd sourced. If five or more of your DNA relatives at 23andme indicate all 4 of their grandparents were from one location, this could become a country listed under your "British & Irish", for instance. So while it can be a clue for your ancestry it doesn't exclude other countries under that category.
Thank you for the information!!
So they’re relying a lot of human input too? It’ll get more accurate as more people do it though
Yes, as far as the recent ancestor locations. There are regular updates, so it'll definitely get more accurate!
I’m about to buy this cus my mom is adopted and my biological dad left I really don’t know what I am thanks for sharing this it really helped me feel less scared that this might be a ripoff

Paula Thacker yep
I wrote it all out but sadly on the British bit shows the different regions
I'm 79.8% European
40.2% of that is British
1 being from London but given the fact that London is a mixed bag of every nationality, and ethnicity
2nd is Glasgow,
3rd Greater Manchester,
4th Tyne and Wear,
5th West Midlands,
6th Belfast so I do have Irish but technically Belgast is Northern Ireland which is part of England
7th Merseyside,
8th Lancashire,
9th South Yorkshire,
10th Derbyshire
I'm most from the northern parts of England which is cool cause that means I can be a Stark and a Wildling lol
French, German is at 10.6% but doesn't give me regions like the British one
Scandinavian 0.7%
Broadly Northwestern European 11.9%
Southern European 11.0%
Spanish, Portuguese, 6.8%
Broadly Southern European 4.5%
Broadly European 5.4%
East Asian & Native American 16%
Native American 7.3%
North Asian 1.8%
Manchurian & Mongolian 1.3%
Broadly Northern Asian 0.5%
Japanese and Koren 0.2%
Korean 0.2%
Chinese and Southern Asian 0.2%
Broadly Chinese and Southern Asian 0.2%

We have the same haplogroup, V hey cousin!
Also, I'm not sure if you have checked recently but since this video was uploaded 23andme has updated their results. They updated at the end of December/beginning of January. Your percentages will probably change and for all of the regions that it shows a specific country, if you click on your "View report" underneath that region it will show you specific regions within that country. You and me have very similar results. Almost half of me is English, Irish, and Scottish. I am little more than half German. My results state 46.3% "French & German" (but I have 14% still as "broadly NW European" and my only connection thus far is Germany, mostly very Southern Germany. Specifically Baden-Wurttenburg and Bavaria. But I too have family from Switzerland as well as Alsace. That area used to be a part of Germany and has changed back and forth throughout the years from France/Germany.
Also, according to these results, you have no Irish connection. If you did it would also state " Ireland" because on mine it listed "United Kingdom, Ireland" Because I have more UK than I do Irish. Just because it doesn't detect a region doesn't mean that you don't have that within you but at the same time, if you are something it should detect it, even a small amount. I have seen people like like 2 or 3 percent from a region and then it pinpoints a specific country within that region. So you might not have received an Irish DNA from your parents. We get 50 percent from each parent, but it is a random 50 percent, which is why full-blooded siblings will have different results and you may not get a specific region that you think you should have.
Very cool!! and yes omg mine has changed a lot, I'm debating on doing an update video!

Hello Margaret, great video. Thank you for the upload. The UK covers a part of Ireland so you may still be partly Irish. Just on the UK side. This video is a few years old now. Have you had any updates? I’d be fascinated to see them. Kind regards.
Yes I have had updates! Not a huge change though just more specific on country - also some native America did show up actually lol

What’s Brit club?
I haven’t done an update yet!
@@Margaret_Hemenway It’s a space for people of British ancestry. A space where can can learn about our history and learn about our story. And ultimately a space where we can honour Britannia.
You're mostly British like me. I live in Kentucky. And I'm descended from the American colonists. I think this DNA stuff is fascinating. I just wish that after the results are given out to the people who paid for them. The companies would then destroy all records of it. I don't trust what these companies may do with the data later on. Such as passing it on to insurance companies etc.
Yes mainly British :) It's pretty darn cool! I also like how it updates as they get more DNA to compare results with. Matching and comparing with your family members is probably my favorite aspect of the whole thing!
What I think is interesting is that I haven’t seen many Americans with no less than 1% African ancestry
Really? I thought it was pretty common!

Thank you Kalina! ❤️❤️ Made my day 😘
Glad that you like the results, but it`s kind of not detailed enough.
Do they also report you the raw data of your genetic composition?
For example "HLA-DR3" or haplogroup R1a and CTS3321/M673 mutation?
Or just interpreted data?
Yes it does show you that. On your detailed report it shows that my paternal haplogroup is R-Z209 and my maternal is V. You can download the entire raw data from their site!

Thanks.
So in addition to the haplogroup you see a long list of things like: HLA-DR3, HCG4B
CG15...? This data must be huge? It`s like an excel or pdf?
Excel !
I took Ancestry’s test and the first set of results I got were for the most part accurate. I’m half German and it showed 35% Western Europe and 21% east Europe, which I assume accounts for my family from eastern Germany “now Poland”. Then about 34% from the British isles “mainly Great Britain” and that seemed about right. Then the rest included 5% Scandinavian and four trace regions which were 2% North African, 1% Southern Europe, 1% Iberia and 1% middle eastern. The updated results that I received recently were kind of confusing. It seems that they now take Western Europe and the British iles and put them together into “England, Wales and northwestern Europe”. It gave me 50% from this area and it kind of threw me off of which areas my family comes from. Other than that the rest remained relatively the same.
Yeah I can’t comment on ancestry’s because I never took it and my sister got very different results from mine with her test.
Yeah I do want to take the 23 and me test. I’m curious if my results will differentiate.
The results will be somewhat different but not too much of a difference to justify taking it again (in my opinion)

How long did you have to wait for the results? Several weeks or months?
About a month!
I think the main concern that people have about 23 and me, is who owns that company? And the fact that they keep and sell your results to third parties. In this case they ay sell them to insurance companies who, once they have a clear picture of your genetic makeup, could say they won't insure you for certain things or say they will but charge more. It is a mine field out there. Be wary.
Very true!
There is literally nothing more than your DOB and email address linking you to your 23andMe results.... I wouldn't worry.

I wonder if they also go by your last name(s)
I don't think so!
@@Margaret_Hemenway you don't....hmm one day I'm gonna try it
I find these DNA results confusing and contradictory in general. For example, a white American can come up as part Scottish and part English, yet when an Englishman does the test, he comes up 10% English with the rest being other parts of Europe. So is 'English' even a proper ancestry? It's mainly people from other subgroups as well.
I'm a white Australian with known British roots, but that could mean Celtic, Scandinavian, Anglo Saxon or Iberian if you go back much further.
Yeah that’s a question for 23andme! There is a section that shows you what time period it is referencing.
Yes English is a racial group, but it's important to note that England is a bit of a European melting pot. The foundation stock is Celtic, with influxes from Rome, and later Scandinavian and then German invaders, all leaving their genetic footprints. So assuming this Englishman's ancestry was confirmed English, which I doubt, getting results from elsewhere makes sense.
It's also important to understand these tests look for relations, so if one gene is common in one area, we can reasonably conclude you've got roots in that area for having that gene. This is true for thousands of genes per area, so the more genes from a region you have, the higher the chances you hail from that area, which is why tests like this are able to pinpoint not just England but Lancaster or Glasgow for example.
Hope this helps!
