When starting a new eLearning project, it’s easy to jump right in and start designing the course. However, it’s important to take a step back and determine what exactly your eLearning course is attempting to accomplish; or better yet, whether or not an eLearning course is needed at all! This is where a needs analysis comes into play.
Whether you call it a “needs analysis,” a “training needs assessment,” a “performance assessment,” or something else, a needs analysis is simply the process of evaluating a performance issue to determine the root cause and offer one or more solutions.
So, in this video, I'm sharing my simplified process for conducting a needs analysis.

Awesome breakdown! Thank you
Great info! I work in a production environment and it seems there's a lack of motivation to adapt. We also lack strong leadership from our manager. I doubt that until our leadership issue is resolved that e-learning will help much.
Really good delivery. Clear, thoughtful, and nice pace. Thank you!!!
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it!
Thank you for this very clear explanation of the needs analysis. I love this part of the job, btw.
Thanks for watching, Elizabeth! And I'm glad to hear there are a few people out there who enjoy conducting needs analyses! We need folks like you! :)
Well presented Tim. Keep up the great work mate

Hi, I am a university faculty member teaching computer science. I am planning to use LNA in my class. Looking for some guidance and discussion.
Inform your audience why you are conducting the analysis. Tale away the possibility perceived threat
That's a great tip! Thanks for sharing!
thankyou
You're welcome!
My additional tip is not to accept team performance data as homogenously true of all team members. Yes, a team of 10 might not be selling enough widgets as a group, but if we look at individual results, we may find 8 are selling more than expected, and 2 are hardly selling any at all. Sending all 10 on a course will just annoy the 8 and waste time and money. Isolating the problem to individuals is not always comfortable, but if you can’t learn to have awkward conversations you shouldn't be working in L&D.
great video! seems that the transcript is not from this video. a whole different story in vietnamese. very sorry, wanted to have it translate since i am not english.
Thanks for letting me know. I'll have to take a look and see what's going on with the translations.
