Seeing all these older references in newer seasons gives me tonal whiplash. It’s like that one kid in class who tries to be a class clown by saying variations of one joke they said earlier. Whereas SpongeBob has always been a show about moving onto new things in its comedy. Even the Dark Ages (Season 6-8) experimented a little even if it was all garbage
I just watched season 5,6 and 7 recently and compared to modern spongebob they aren't even that bad, especially season 5 and 6. I think people just never rewatched those seasons after watching season 12/13/14 and just remember off their back of their heads that those "dark age" seasons where classified as horrible back then, but those modern seasons are 100 times worse.

That, sadly, may be the reason it's just an ouroboros of crap, at this point: Everyone loves early Spongebob being weird, the middle got too weird, and now they're playing it safe by only really redoing what got praised, without understanding the reasons behind said praise.
That's why I consider seasons 1-9 the lore building seasons, with seasons 10-14 being the reference heavy seasons. Say what you will about the writing in seasons 6-8, but still plenty of original stories in those seasons. Okay, maybe not so much in season 7, seasons 6 and 8 for sure. Heck, some would say they even wasted these original plots on garbage writing. Stuff like "Porous Pockets," "The Card," "Shuffleboarding," "Toy Store of Doom," "Oral Report," and "Karen 2.0" have potential and they don't even sound like ScumBob episodes when I first heard about them or read the brief summary for them.

I remember watching that episode from season 10 where Squidward delivers paintings and he visits Rock Bottom briefly, I found that callback really cool at the time. At least the season 12 episode "Insecurity Guards" gave us the Bikini Bottom Museum of Everything with a creative design. But then it became less creative for The Patrick Star Show episode "Now Museum, Now You Don't" when the Upturn Museum of Upscale Art literally reuses the same exact design of the Bikini Bottom Museum of Everything, but with Upturn's face on the front and the sign changed. Some say Lady Upturn bought out the museum, but I call it laziness.

I don’t understand how the show falls to this level, and yet this episode got a 9.7/10 stars?? How?? I get it, SpongeBob is a kids show now. It always was, but back then the jokes were layered enough to where adults could be entertained. They don’t have those jokes in them anymore. But the thing is, the old seasons weren’t only great for the jokes. They had great storytelling, interesting characters, fun plots, and were more grounded. Instead of throwing in annoying weird facial expressions every 30 seconds, and having these weird songs playing in the background that have been reused for 10 seasons now, just make a more grounded show and make better background music. Ambient, relaxing noise, grounded and realistic characters. Good jokes are just a bonus at this point. Can’t they just emulate what season 1-3 did so well? They have the blueprints right in front of them.

spongebob merchandise constantly references spongebob memes (such as the caveman spongebob picture at 2:38) even if they are years late. so seeing how the episodes now constantly call back to these memes, it makes me feel like they are trying to reel older viewers and internet addicted children in for views and money
I miss the early seasons when it was so calming and tropical and atmospheric and the humor was extremely subtle and hilarious and the funny faces were used sparingly so they stand out more, Now every face has to be a wacky over-the-top expression accompanied by an obnoxious Johnny Test whipcrack soundeffect and the music isn't pleasing to the ear, nor is the show pleasing to the eye, all of the senses it's unpleasant to, I've never seen a show that went from The Best to The Worst so immediately, There was never an episode of SpongeBob that was just okay or average, it went from consistent 5-star hit after hit for the first three seasons, they had a very Pixar-esque run, then after Hillenburg decided the story had come to a natural end but Nickelodeon said "fuck that" it's been consistently bad with not a single exception after all these years, even the brief period before Hillenburg's death where he reportedly "came back" to the show, which I doubt he had any actual control or involvement besides a condesceding pat on the back slash pickpocket from a millionaire executive.

I'd like it if you made more positive reviews of good modern SpongeBob episodes. I don't think the modern era is that good either (to me, it's really hit-or-miss, mostly misses but sometimes hits), but just listening to the repetition of you detesting them & being a Spongeboomer (I hate that name) gets tiring after a while.
This episodes makes the nuclear theory more plausible. The main flaw of this theory is that we see the characters way before nuclear bombs even existed. But now we see how an anchor suddenly apears in what is supposed to be prehistory. I think their prehistory is happening right after the nuclear tests and would explain the anchor. The reason they're so developed now when only 40-60 years passed is because maybe time is diffrent here. Think about how 1 human day is 7 dog days. Maybe something similar is happening here
If the people in charge of writing new episodes see this (I doubt it) please; for the love of god, come up with new ideas. We don’t actually like shameless rips of old episodes, that’s not how nostalgia works. Imagine if instead of Elder Scrolls 6 after all these years, we instead got a slightly different version of Skyrim, the same game we’ve had for well over a decade. That’s what this feels like. You know what would succeed at nostalgia? An episode that actually aims to capture what SpongeBob used to be, the thing I am actually nostalgic for. And you don’t do that by pointing at older episodes going “remember this?” It’s lazy is what it is. If I wanted that, I’d go back and watch that episode.
I think bringing back old references is great, but its literally to a point where its the only thing that's being put into the episode. There is genuinely little to no effort put into the jokes, writing, or even the plot of the episode because apparently nostalgia makes up for all of that. The sad thing is that this premise isn't even bad. If you want to make an anniversary episode with lots of callbacks, the history museum seems like a natural fit for that. If they hadn't forgotten to put actual jokes in there and make the references make sense in the story (and also if they hadn't made a whole season full of references without context), it could have been really nice.
It's sad to see this show in it's current state. I still wish this show had fresh ideas for episodes with world building, comedy, and character traits, and set pieces inspired by marine biology and the aquatic world. I can't watch any of this new stuff without getting bored halfway through and wishing I was watching older episodes or even just a different, now better show. People say Sonic the Hedgehog has a bit of a nostalgia problem too, but at least Sega is capable of coming up with new ideas (Sonic Superstars) while the Spongebob writers seem stuck recycling old material because they barely have the deadline to write basic plots randomly slapped together with pieces of the past and random BS. Like seriously... milking urchins? I could understand milking the venom from their spines to make an anti-venom, but why randomly slap in a poorly disguised cow... when actual sea cows like dugongs and manatees exist? Seasons 6 through 9 may not be good at times, but at least they had unique ideas where Spongebob still felt like a dynamic character instead of treating him like an idiot for convenience sake.

Old SpongeBob was so great because it had plots that everyone can relate to at one time or another. It was like watching an underwater themed, comedic portrayal of life.
All this episode really did was confirm that Ugh is not canon, and they also made an actual historical reference to Henry Ford, which I honestly was not expecting. Still, they could’ve honestly made way more great history jokes here

At least the season 12 episode "Insecurity Guards" gave us the Bikini Bottom Museum of Everything with a creative design. But then it became less creative for The Patrick Star Show episode "Now Museum, Now You Don't" when the Upturn Museum of Upscale Art literally reuses the same exact design of the Bikini Bottom Museum of Everything, but with Upturn's face on the front and the sign changed. Some say Lady Upturn bought out the museum, but I call it laziness.

It’s in my top 5 of the season even though I didn’t like it very much. I agree about the references for the most part making more sense than some of the other recent ones

I get it, SpongeBob is a kids show now. It always was, but back then the jokes were layered enough to where adults could be entertained. They don’t have those jokes in them anymore.
But the thing is, the old seasons weren’t only great for the jokes. They had great storytelling, interesting characters, fun plots, and were more grounded. Instead of throwing in annoying weird facial expressions every 30 seconds, and having these weird songs playing in the background that have been reused for 10 seasons now, just make a more grounded show and make better background music. Ambient, relaxing noise, grounded and realistic characters. Good jokes are just a bonus at this point.

spongebob merchandise constantly references spongebob memes (such as the caveman spongebob picture at 2:38) even if they are years late. so seeing how the episodes now constantly call back to these memes, it makes me feel like they are trying to reel older viewers and internet addicted children in for views and money
It's honestly sad seeing my all time favorite cartoon growing up that was kind of a part of me personality wise, go down in such a horrible direction.

I will point out that museums can count as research. I actually had to visit a museum for a paper once.
I miss the early seasons when it was so calming and tropical and atmospheric and the humor was extremely subtle and hilarious and the funny faces were used sparingly so they stand out more, Now every face has to be a wacky over-the-top expression accompanied by an obnoxious Johnny Test whipcrack soundeffect and the music isn't pleasing to the ear, nor is the show pleasing to the eye, all of the senses it's unpleasant to, I've never seen a show that went from The Best to The Worst so immediately, There was never an episode of SpongeBob that was just okay or average, it went from consistent 5-star hit after hit for the first three seasons, they had a very Pixar-esque run, then after Hillenburg decided the story had come to a natural end but Nickelodeon said "fuck that" it's been consistently bad with not a single exception after all these years, even the brief period before Hillenburg's death where he reportedly "came back" to the show, which I doubt he had any actual control or involvement besides a condesceding pat on the back slash pickpocket from a millionaire executive.

I'd like it if you made more positive reviews of good modern SpongeBob episodes. I don't think the modern era is that good either (to me, it's really hit-or-miss, mostly misses but sometimes hits), but just listening to the repetition of you detesting them & being a Spongeboomer (I hate that name) gets tiring after a while.
This episodes makes the nuclear theory more plausible. The main flaw of this theory is that we see the characters way before nuclear bombs even existed. But now we see how an anchor suddenly apears in what is supposed to be prehistory. I think their prehistory is happening right after the nuclear tests and would explain the anchor. The reason they're so developed now when only 40-60 years passed is because maybe time is diffrent here. Think about how 1 human day is 7 dog days. Maybe something similar is happening here

Imagine if instead of Elder Scrolls 6 after all these years, we instead got a slightly different version of Skyrim, the same game we’ve had for well over a decade. That’s what this feels like.
You know what would succeed at nostalgia? An episode that actually aims to capture what SpongeBob used to be, the thing I am actually nostalgic for. And you don’t do that by pointing at older episodes going “remember this?” It’s lazy is what it is. If I wanted that, I’d go back and watch that episode.

I think bringing back old references is great, but its literally to a point where its the only thing that's being put into the episode. There is genuinely little to no effort put into the jokes, writing, or even the plot of the episode because apparently nostalgia makes up for all of that. I sure that's why a lot of people are complaining

season 3 episode 14, (ugh) is my favorite comfort episode.
The sad thing is that this premise isn't even bad. If you want to make an anniversary episode with lots of callbacks, the history museum seems like a natural fit for that. If they hadn't forgotten to put actual jokes in there and make the references make sense in the story (and also if they hadn't made a whole season full of references without context), it could have been really nice.

It's sad to see this show in it's current state. I still wish this show had fresh ideas for episodes with world building, comedy, and character traits, and set pieces inspired by marine biology and the aquatic world. I can't watch any of this new stuff without getting bored halfway through and wishing I was watching older episodes or even just a different, now better show. People say Sonic the Hedgehog has a bit of a nostalgia problem too, but at least Sega is capable of coming up with new ideas (Sonic Superstars) while the Spongebob writers seem stuck recycling old material because they barely have the deadline to write basic plots randomly slapped together with pieces of the past and random BS. Like seriously... milking urchins? I could understand milking the venom from their spines to make an anti-venom, but why randomly slap in a poorly disguised cow... when actual sea cows like dugongs and manatees exist?
Seasons 6 through 9 may not be good at times, but at least they had unique ideas where Spongebob still felt like a dynamic character instead of treating him like an idiot for convenience sake.
