Tanner, your videos are immensely satisfying to watch! thank you! They make me want to buy all the right tools and shape a few... I made about six or so, waaay back in 1970-71 just after I got married... got myself in serious trouble with the in-laws, when I sanded the first creation right next to their open washing machine!! mass itchies for the family...☹️ Tools were primitive... one surform rasp, no disposable gloves, no accurate mix for catalyst... (first board never totally went hard on the deck..) Thank God for youtube!... wish we'd had it back then, to avoid stress.. but would I do it all again?? heck, yeah!!
Awesome video Man, I shaped and glassed a couple of 5'6" and a 5'10" boards years ago back in the days of single and twin fins and would love to get back into it. Inspiration sometimes drives us forward an you just gave me a whole lot of inspiration. Now I've subscribed to your channel and will be inspired even more, of that I'm sure. Hello from Australia 🇦🇺
Really great videos and content. I’ve picked up so many tips from this channel. Got a lot of tips on the whole process when I was working on my first board and am really happy with how it turned out. I’m now starting a long board and again got many ideas watching this video. I like the technique on spooning the nose and how you put the rocker on the tail and nose with the planer, definitely will try that way. You made using the planer on the rails look way easy, I might try that. Another great board, look forward to seeing it glassed.
Hey Tanner, Fantastic Video. Youve given us the confidence to make 2 boards for our college course here in the UK. We introduce students to surfing but feel the programme would be even better if we shaped and made some boards. Thank you for the effort to post your videos. ITS APPRECIATED. Adam UK
Lotta ways to thin nose out on deck n tail. Planer w depth adjust to contour cuts, then a sander you can also take foam off behind the nose. I've even seen people sureform it down then sand. Lotta ways to do it. Good shaping 👍
I have a similar setup, but more permanent, with pvc pipe starting from the ceiling above the board, and the flex hose clamped to the pvc. It helps to bungee the power cord up with the flex hose, so you don’t have to hold it out of the way, and then you can switch sides when planing without tangling the cord up on the racks. I’ve ran over my power cord with the planer, once. Lol. :)
The hole-punch trick in the template print out is so good. Consider doing a short/IG on it. I haven't seen that anywhere else.I watch like 10 of these type of videos before every time I do a board (a few/year).
takes a lot of talent to use a paper template. personally I could probably make a spin template out of 1/8 ply faster and better with the ability to adjust on the fly
I'm Shaper in Portugal, and in my opinion you left the tail and nose with quite thick. You should have seen a longboard already done. Normally leave the tail and nose between 1/4 or 3/4 inch

Great video, I love your stuff! Have you ever wondered how much ground you cover when you make a board? I would be fun to wear something to measure it so you could say this was a 2 mile board😊🤙...
Really enjoying your videos! Thanks! Do you feel you’ve reached the point with your shaping skills where you can ride your own boards without limiting your surfing progression? I love the idea of making my own boards, but not sure how many I’d have to make before I’d feel confident that my self-shapes weren’t limiting me in the water. Thanks again for the videos!
Good question. I’ve always loved riding the boards I shape more than the boards I purchase. It’s the feeling of riding something you’ve put time and effort into making. Even if some aren’t as dialed in, I’ve never felt like it hinders my progression or enjoyment. Just gives an opportunity to figure it out and how it rides. Having lots of choices in the boards I ride and mixing it up also keeps me interested instead of surfing a thruster every session. Just my two cents 🤙
I agree with Tanner, I learned to surf on self shapes and made my own snowboards. The stoke is worth the imperfections. For me I found there is a skill level you reach where you can quickly adapt to ride pretty much any board. However when you start to reach that level its when you really start to notice the little things in a board. My first couple snowboards came out really rough but I could ride them as well as anything else. As I dialed in the small details I could ride my newer boards better but I could do certain things easier. For surfing I have found it similar only its a bit more picking the right board for the conditions of the waves. I look at the first surfboard I shaped now and I did so many things I wouldn't do again. But when I surf it every now and then its still super fun even though it was rough hahaha.
