Among other things, John Lennon had an ear for a good song. This is a direction he would go into in the '80s. The musical style here is echoed in many other musics of the period, and the puckish part of me picks this one for a Listen Selection: the Mick Jagger solo LP "She's The Boss". I haven't checked whether there are overlaps in that album or this track, but Lennon and Jagger, and Yoko going onward, used a number of studio and side musicians in common (whose names on EVEN MORE credits in the period suggest they were doing 100-hour weeks (and, unfortunately, much Marching Powder)).
This is a creditable live perf. Not remarkable or spectacular, but workmanlike* performance, the important part that it was not mechanical "music". A player of no special skill myself, i'm nonetheless a lover of wide ranges of music and have suffocated as everything has gone from human hands. I can enjoy, and applaud, a middling rendition of anything by an artist who's doing it for real; that which is articulated by algorithms & ad agencies, and whose instrumentation is a literal grid, makes me flee.
I put this in my Saved files.

At least most other people have rational reasons for disliking an artist, like a crime they committed or proven horrible behavior, or can say “well it’s just not my cuppa tea”. With Yoko they literally just hate her because she’s different and blame her for things she couldn’t have possibly done 🤷🏻♀️

Artists like Yoko, The Shaggs, Frank Zappa, The Velvet Underground, and the plethora of free jazz musicians from that era were examples of this genre. In fact, in responding to criticism that she doesn’t take art seriously, Yoko once had this to say, “I wonder why men can get serious at all. They have this delicate long thing hanging outside their bodies, which goes up and down by its own will.” Whatever you personally think of Yoko, she was truly a product of her time. There’s a reason why she wasn’t automatically rejected by the record industry, and it’s not just because of Lennon.

@@mabewait's not unfeasible that John Lennon - having been madly in love with Yoko - would have automatically viewed anything she created as valid and a masterpiece. He was a tremendously talented man, that can't be denied, but he's human too. Lennon's seal of approval could be seen as having created a sort of "The Emperor has no clothes" situation in certain circles.
Songs, and good songs specifically, are not about music talent. You figure this out with time, I think.

It's really not, there's easily countless worse performances out there. Is this the best rendition? No.
Are her vocals here particularly awful? No.
I think a lot of the hatred for Yoko Ono's singing is targeted at her strange vocal outbursts and shrieks, as well as her dense accent and sometimes monotone pitch, but there's far worse singers.
The mixing is pretty poor here though, making certain parts of the vocal jump out way too much, that doesn't sound great.
Also, she's a great sport about the negativity, the "okay you can take your earplugs out now" at the end is pretty adorable.
She wasn't the only performer there. There were about 15 others, including The Police, U2, Santana, Miles Davis and others.
