Conan's very first episode was just 2 months before this and his first musical guest was Radiohead who performed their first single, Creep. And then just 2 months later he's got Bjork here performing her first (solo) single, Human Behavior. Conan, Bjork, Radiohead, the 1990's: peak civilization.
Whoa! Somewhere between this and the first night, I was there. Julianne Hatfield performed. I weirdly think a young Adam Sandler might have been on? Been too long.
Always a fan of Bjork's pop music, its really quite minimalist yet maximalist at the same time, just brilliant use of instruments and noise, and that is before you get to the vocals. The studio version of this is some simple bossa nova remix and timpani. Here the bossa nova is much more forward with some synthesizer, a block, she just pieces things together like that and I don't know how you even begin to think of doing this kind of thing.
@@Gee-xb7rt Agreed. I have also wondered how she comes by her ideas, I’m slayed by her sheer originality. When I hear her musi, I think ‘sui generis’ for some reason …and then I have to go look up the meaning of what had popped into my head, haha

the 90s were pretty much the last good decade of music, So many bands/songs, who is going to remember the #1 spotify hit from 2018 in 30-50 years? todays stuff , all written to get streamed for a month, then forgotten about
Actually I don't think she is weird at all - She is playing it straight. It just seems strange because we are used to seeing people on late night talk shows be super extroverted and trying to make people laugh and tell stories and she isn't. She is letting her music do the talking and forcing the audience to see her as an artist and not a celebrity.
When she hits those high notes....I mean she is talented unlike many others. To write, sing, and perform your art is creating really masterpieces. I wonser where all of the inspiration comes from. ❤
This live performance made me both a Bjork and Conan fan.......just a piece of 90's cool. We were really going in a good direction at that time. No idea how we got to the doofus state we are in now.......
There’s great music today, you just won’t ever be able to find it outside of your plebeian taste and usual cruddy bands you fancy. You’ll never find the great bands of today
Underrated? That track got to number 2 in the US charts, the video got nominated for the Grammies, most magazines like The Guardian in 2013 look back on Debut like one of the most relevant albums of the 90s, and it sold 5 MILLION copies :D
So so so incredibly original. We don’t see originality anymore. She sings the song the way we fell in love with it. She goes full out, doesn’t diminish the forceful parts, doesn’t skip over the high notes, but does add a bit of different flair from the studio version. Love Björk.
I'm ashamed to admit that I didn't like her music at all as a kid. But now that I'm 40, I think it's amazing, and some of the best to come out of the 90's!
cgsweat, can you tell me do you know what song of hers had the most radio play? I am trying to find one song of hers that I used to hear that I like but I can not find it.
Byerk! Conan calls her lol Bjork was the happiest, most-sprite-like little elfin goddess of the 90s with a gorgeously quirky, melodic powerhouse of a voice. I still never tire of seeing her in concert, even decades alter.
I'm a former jock, brain, and rah. I was never a nerd, and I don't have an ounce of musical or artistic talent, but guys like me liked her too. Look at her fucking cheekbones! She is pure pixie perfection.
By attempting to create detail lost from the source footage, it falls into the uncanny valley by not understanding such things as hair movement. As much as the picture made me wince, I'm not even going to turn up the audio and see how that came out.
I saw her live twice in the 90s in London. I discovered Bjork via 808 State Oops. It was her voice that grabbed me. That’s before I knew what an incredible artist she was. I love her music, but also her quirkyness. God I’d love to meet her! I once worked with a doctor in London, from Iceland, who HAD met her. Bjork is simply a unique, incredibly talented artist who is also incredibly endearing. And, if you haven’t seen Dancer in The Dark, you may not know what a stunning actor she is.
I heard this song on the radio and bought the album shorty afterwards. It's fantastic...although she has quite a few awesome records, there's something about Debut that makes it probably my favorite. Some of the songs on it are so beautiful it's actually emotional a bit listening to it.
absolute effing magic on late night tv; he had the best musical guests since the days of Fridays; this live version is, imo, better than the LP version. #heartconan
October 1993, sitting with a group of close friends in The Greenhouse Effect cafe in Amsterdam, my fiance in the group had decided that weekend to break up with me, minus 15 C outside, mugs of hot chocolate inside, and this album on repeat all day. Memories! 😊

Generation X rising
Also The Breeders! 1993 was a vibe and I'm sorry to those who missed out.
This is an amazing performance. I just listened to the studio version, and this is, of course different, but maybe better, more powerful.
"Peak civilization"... wow... so true.
Whoa! Somewhere between this and the first night, I was there. Julianne Hatfield performed. I weirdly think a young Adam Sandler might have been on? Been too long.
Björk is always writing 'future music' this still sounds incredibly fresh today
Sounds very cyberpunk, in the industrial style, the lyrics, and the vocal stylings which feel like they are from a different time.
She killed it. What a force of nature she is.
