  • This is my long-term review of the DJI Avata. The DJI Avata has been out for approximately 6 months now and I have been able to fly it extensively in all sorts of environments and weather conditions. I have probably put more flights on this drone than any other one in the past, and I can say that the DJI Avata is my all-time favorite drone. This is for a few reasons, and I will break it down in my review. I know many are still curious about this drone and wondering if it is worthwhile for them, hopefully, as I share my experience with the DJI Avata over the past 6 months it will help you decide if it is a right fit for you.

    I absolutely love mine. I initially bought the mini 3 pro and enjoyed it until I clipped a branch and damaged it enough that I had to send it in to be repaired. After flying FPV I don’t feel as comfortable flying from a screen. I’ve have yet to collide with anything flying the Avata except a dog snatching it out of the air. But it survived with no issues. Thanks for the review!

    My time with my Avata. I really do love it. If all you do with this drone is use the normal and fast mode between the joystick and controller it is nice how it will stabilize itself. That being said,
    If you use the Avata in "Manual Mode Fun" running into trees is going to be a lot less forgiving and if you crash your Avata isn't going to care weather your upside right or right side down the blades will continue to spin and they will grab whatever they can get ahold of till they either stop or you turn it off. I have eaten up a few blades this way. If you do crash and get in the habit of knowing when to hit "Stop" it will automatically stop the blades and hopefully when it completely crashes won't destroy your blades.
    Manual Mode is a lot of fun with the Avata. I do notice if you do any front or back rolls you need to give your drone some upward thrust before doing the roll to help reduce the fall it will go through so it doesn't fall too quickly and you lose more altitude than you want to causing it to possible bottom out or crash. You really do need to spend some serious time in the simulator before you go rushing into manual mode.
    I have used the DJI version of the simulator and it isn't the best by any means to learn how to fly manual mode. I did buy "LiftOff" and it has such more realistic feel to it. If you don't want to do "Manual Mode Fun" or that isn't your cup of tea? That is all good, do what makes you happy.
    Good video and I am glad you're enjoying your Avata!

      I’m up in Buffalo. Cold weather and the Avata battery are NOT friends. I’d highly recommend the DJI virtual flight app to practice while the weather is bad. I try flying daily but when I can’t, I fly the sim and always see improvements in my next real flight. I’d also say the Avata is my favorite quad except they had to come out with that dumb RID update. I built a sub 250 4s whoop on an AOS Cine25 frame with an O3 air unit and I’ll probably be looking to sell my avata to build another quad soon. It was my first diy quad. I have no previous experience soldering electronics or configuring quads. It was easy. The hardest thing was having all of the right pieces to complete the build. Just little things that I won’t forget next time like extra m2 screws, double sided tape, and stuff along those lines. Very easy though and had my first indoor flight two days ago. Enjoy that avata and fly it indoors if the weather is crap. Pro tip: if you have expensive artwork hanging on the wall it’s not a bad idea to put it in the closet while you fly. Ask me how I know 😂

    I was flying my Air 2S in activetrack following my car a few days ago right at the tree line, and twice it hit twigs sticking out that the obstacle avoidance didn't pick up. I would say that these twigs were at least about 10 millimeters thick so they were fairly sizable. Luckily both times it was able to catch itself very well and the only damage was a little slice in the propeller that is so small that it doesn't affect flight at all. I guess my point is just that these drones, even the ones with open propellers, are very strong and resilient.

      @nicolaupoceiro7570:
      I have never, ever flown a drone before. Until yesterday, that was. It was absolutely mindblowing. Even though I was pretty nervous at first, this thing just gently takes your hand and says: come and go flying with me! With the motion controller 2 (which has a joystick in place of the "panic-button": press lock once does the job now), you can really fully control it. Landing is a breeze: approach at a decent altitude, say 5m for cowards like me ;-) - tap "lock" when it gets close and it stops and hovers (and makes you look like a pro), gently move the joystick down and it lands like a feather. I haven't used RTH or automatic landing yet. "Normal" mode is great for landing or anything close up, "Sport" is pretty impressive for beginners like me (and sorely needed if you want to cover any distance), while "manual" is twice as fast again. This will have to wait a bit (as you need the "proper" controller for it). Of course, the purchase of which will always compete with: batteries. This babe eats them for breakfast. There was a light breeze yesterday, pull up against the wind in sports mode and watch the flight time drop - 10s at a time ;-) So don't expect more than 30-40min of airtime if you have the "fly more" kit (2 more batts!). But this is feels like paragliding. Only better. This drone hasn't got so much as a learning curve; it's more like a smooth learning take-off.
      Thank you Shawn for these (awe-) inspiring videos!
      I haven't even taken pictures, let alone videos with my drone yet. But hey, looking at how you fly it: I have got a lot to learn yet.
      But after yesterday I can say: I will love every single minute of it!
      So:
      Dear Nicolau,
      in case you haven't done so yet: swallow hard. Get the drone kit with the motion controller 2, get the "fly more" kit, get a good 100w USB-C charger and 2 USB-C PD cables and a bag of your choice (mine is from a company called "PGYTECH", is about the size of an A4 sheet and easy to carry): this all adds up to a lot of money. But it also will mean a lot of happyness. For years to come.
      Cheers!
      Tom.

      @@thomassturm9024 Wow, such a long response, thanks for the time you spent.
      I have never had to do with drones, either. Because of the Ukraine war I learned that there is great demand for drone pilots. Although I would prefer civilian applications. And I came across that brand, DJI.
      I assume the fascination with drones is a bit similar to the flight simulator application that has been around for decades.
      I am not even sure I am allowed to fly a drone here, there are laws regulating that stuff and I don't live far from an airport.
      I live in a coastal city, with lots of huge seagulls. I wonder if they would attack that small drone if they crossed it?
      Across the street there is a huge residential building, but it is abandoned. They tore out most walls inside as well as ceilings. The windows are gone as well. So, I could fly the drone inside and practice precision steering and 3D thinking from my kitchen window.
      I assume that controller might be more difficult to handle. Unlike the usual consoles with two joysticks (which are fixed relative to the console, so you can even dance around if you want), you have to be careful with every move you make. You need a steady arm and hand, maybe rest your elbow on a desktop?

    I lost my mini 3 pro drone yesterday. How....?
    I was over a building in an industrial area and seagulls were diving it. Very defensive behaviour. One of them hit the rotor and so the software decided to cut the power. It landed on a steel balcony off the first floor of a new block of flats. DJI should not cut the power to save the rotor when the drone is up at 50 metres. DJI cutting power means it crashes. From that height its not good.
    This if it crashes upside down can flip over. The rotors are protected too. My mini 3 pro I could see out the camera only the drone was upside down so could not fly it away.
    Logic is I get 2 drones. One to go air lift the other if this happened again. Now got to wait till tomorrow to see the site manager and hope they return the drone.

      I would go with the mini 3 pro if you've never flown before. For a while you'll want to see what you're doing from the ground as you learn to control it vs stepping into FPV which is disorienting. You want to have situational awareness. You can transition from watching the drone to watching on the screen as you get used to it. You'll also get way better battery life to spend time learning. M3P is a great drone. You'll go back to it time and time again.

    • @AirPhotography

      It’s a really hard question to answer because everybody is different and their needs are different. Another important thing to consider. Is that with something like the mini 3. Do you have many more intelligent flight options? Plus you could take photos which the Avata is not really geared to.

    Hey, do you use this extra battery you can attach to the top of it?
    DJI Avatar is amazing. I'm waiting for next version with allot of updates ;)
    It's the biggest fun from all drones but fly time on one battery charge is no for me. If it will be 30 min in future of 1 hour, then it will be amazing! :)
    This joystick & googles make it so much fun to fly with I love it this model for that!

    Hi, congrats, very useful video, just one question:
    I am severely visually impaired, I bought the DJI FPV but I had to resell it because I had difficulty reading the writing on the headset, they were too small and there was no option in the menu to enlarge them. Are the fonts in the Avata like in the fpv or bigger? Is there an option to vary the size? Thanks

    Hi I have a quick question. I just got the Dji FPV controller 2 and have connected it to the Avata. However, I haven't practiced real fpv flying yet and will use it in normal mode for Real estate filming. My question is, can I turn off the fpv tilting when turning, so that the horizon is level at all times? I recall you could do that with the original remote. I tried to activate the horizonsteady mode in the settings but that didn't change anything. Do I need to revert back to the original controller to be able to fly like a normal drone? Or am I missing some setting? Thanks in advance!

    • @AirPhotography
      @AirPhotography  Год назад

      Yes, indeed, you can enable light in the settings, but I believe you won’t notice it in the googles. Only the final recorded video on the memory card will have it stabilized.

    Honestly I don’t recommend this Avata at all. I got it at the end of Nov 2022, in Singapore, and just after a few times flight, I incidentally crashed the drone to a branch and fell on the lawn. You know what happened after that? The drone flew away by itself! Initially I thought it was taken by somebody passed by, but after investigation by police office, after checking the CCTV clips nearby, it’s actually the drone flew away by itself after the crash. DJI refused to admit it’s their product flaw and said it’s operational fault. If the drone physically damaged by the impact, I agree it’s operational fault. But the problem is the drone behaved the way it never should have been! Ridiculous, zero confidence in DJI from now on.

    • @AirPhotography
      @AirPhotography  Год назад +1

      I haven’t really read too much about that kind of incident with the Avata it must’ve been a defective product. They are definitely one of the safest and most reliable FPV drones.

    This is by and far the worst Drone I have ever bought. Wouldn’t stay connected, WAY to many menus to navigate just to be able to get it off the ground…😐 motion controller is almost useless - drone responds lagging and keeps flying into trees. DO NOT BUY THIS DRONE. Worst drone I have ever owned.
