Yeah, I've been using midi controllers as my macro keyboard for quite sometime. I've been using KeyboardMaestro to map the midi packets into shortcuts, and believe it or not, I've been using midi foot pedal switchers that are used for guitar pedals, as my macro keyboard. Sometimes I'd also use my 3 octave midi piano/keyboard for it.
Reminds me of college over 20 years ago where we programmed midi to control a lot of things including stage lighting. Behringer make the Motor 49/61 key keyboard controller with a lot more controls, better made and a weighted action. Interesting video. Thanks.
Thanks for the tip about MIDIKey2Key, I used Bome MIDI Translator Pro for a long time for the same thing. It’s a powerful tool but it’s daunting when you just want to do something simple.
I felt this comment lol. Sometimes setting this stuff up takes a lot of trouble and you begin to question then benefits. But every now and then you discover a game changing automation.
I've got a Korg nanoKONTROL 2 midi usb controller to control all of my lights in the home office. I can control rgb color, color temperature, brightness, on/off state for single devices or group them to some kind of master control channel. I'm using an opensource software named midimonster which transforms and sends the midi signal via mqtt to a broker from where on it gets picked up by node red home automation which then again maps all the incoming requests to homeassistant smarthome commands. Furthermore I can control preset scenes and turn off/on the main power for my desk, all using the midi controller. But this is not where things end. I might as well trigger any kind of automation / service or integration in homeassistant or send come channels using a different protocol to some other recipient than my mqtt broker - e.g. some software running on the pc
Let me give you a couple suggestions that might help if you decide to stick with this: First, pick up a right angle (or maybe left angle?) USB Mini - Mini adapter. You'll still have the stupid USB Mini cable, but you can, at least, make it sit flush with the body of the unit. Then, pick up some Blu Tack. This is the magic putty you never knew you needed. Just put a little down on your desk and stick it to the Behringer, and it won't move or budge. I've got my iPad stand and my interface Blu Tack'd down on a mahogany desk and they never move unless I want them to, and it leaves no marks.
I use the behringer min for doing various operations such as 3 knobs for low, medium, and high speed scrolling. I also have 2 knobs for 1 and 5 right or left (the arrow keys). These work in youtube videos to skip ahead and back, and also in VLC player. The nice thing is the knobs are infinite so you can keep twirling them. The slider I use as a zoom, it's like a scroll up/down but with the control key down. And I use 1 knob for volume. I couldn't do these using any existing software, so I wrote my own. I'm on windows and I'm a script programmer (tcl/tk) so I use the windows api (twapi) to inject keystrokes and/or mousewheel commands. The mousewheel is nice, since you don't need window focus, it gets sent to whatever window is under the pointer, even if you didn't click it first. Some of the buttons are set for copy/paste and several of my text editor functions. The knobs are also buttons you can push. I use 2 for sending the commands to go back and forward in a browser. I got mine used and on sale for under $60, but the lowest I've seen it since is $90 used. I'm looking to get another one for my living room video computer.
Can you turn the wheels infinitely or do they have a stop? I would love to use them for scanning across very large layouts for example, looks like a great alternative to an Xbox controller
I've been using the Korg nanoKontrol2 mixing board for LR editing for a couple of years now along with being my main audio mixer whenever I'm not editing photos. :) I love being able to use something like this for something other than what it was intended to do! It took me a while to figure out which parts of my LR workflow would fit best and in what spot. I like stuff like this!
I started out mapping with midikey2key, but I've moved on to midi mixer, its slow going with development, but its a much nicer interface and useful for any app, (for instance , in resolve, I map printer lights to color coded pads on my controller to make color correction fast), and its main use is as a volume mixer that can control individual apps or virtual audio devices. as well as focused windows . I couldn't get the sysex messages for led color changes to work with my arturia minilab II anyway on midikey2key :D There are default profirle for the x touch controller as well. I do wish the x touch had a touch strip tho. XD Kind of acts like a cheap goXLR alternative if you already have an audio interface and has some streamdeck functionality as well.
I’ve been using Behringer X-Touch motorized faders for my own custom interfaces for a while. I love having a physical slider to visually represent levels. Maybe one day it’ll end up on this channel
lol this is the first midi controller I bought it like 8 years ago. Have used to edit in Lightroom, Premiere, VJ with TouchDesigner and actually try to make Musik. This thing is a beast
I've been using these for midi controllers for 5-6 years now with LR. Far more versatile and better ergonomics than any fancy LR specific controller I've tested. Most have controls used by commands as easily done with your keyboard that's right in front of you. Plus the X Touch Midi also works with any other software that is midi controllable too. The endless rotary knobs also being being a switchable 2x8 setup to control 16 parameters in LR is fantastic. I only paid £35 for each of my two. I bought two because I thought I'd need more endless knobs, but 2x8 was turned out to be enough. So I have spare controller just in case. One irritant is that if using two devices you need to tweak one for computer to see them as two devices and that has to be done on a PC. Really Behringer! Re finding LR hard to use with mouse and sliders. You can expand side panels to be larger and make for longer sliders or see deeper folder structures in Library. Press alt key and hover over edge of panel. Drag to suit. 👍
For me, Novation launchpad + Bome's midi translator. Bome classic is FREE. Setup a different profile for every app in Bome if you want. I've setup mine with dozens of apps. Bome can be setup with ANY Midi controller. If you're reading this, you're welcome.
There's one other thing that you can try if you don't want to go deep on any devices. Now I was able to do this with a gaming keyboard that had an extra set of keys on the left hand side, you could also get away with getting a very cheap USB number pad to perform this operation. Basically, using the extra set of keys, you macro left click middle click and right click (of the mouse). Now when you're doing fine controls in whatever program, be it faders or color correction or whatever, you have your one hand doing the mouse clicks and your main hand doing the mouse movements. It is easier on your dominant hand, if you can get a finer touch and you are distributed between both sides if your body which is healthier.
In a similar vein, 3dconnexion and others make high-end "space mice" that are optimized for the repetitive motions performed when using programs like AutoCAD, Sketchpad, etc. Watching someone use those programs with specially designed controllers like this is like watching the work on fast forward. More importantly, tools like what you illustrated here likely do wonders for reducing the need for so many micro-movements which can lead to crippling repetitive stress injuries.
i primarily used this device to adjust audio of multiple programs on the fly for livestreaming, i used Midi Mixer for this, free software but very very powerfull
I created a software interface for my Joypad (8bitDo Zero) to use it as an additional programmable keyboard. It doubled my productivity on some selected tasks.
I’ve been looking for a while for a massive midi controller with literally hundreds of knobs, faders, and switches along with 1/4 or 3.5 in-outs for everything so it can be used for modular software synths. This would be so cool. Normal people can’t afford 45k for a system 55 with the dual sequencers. They can’t even afford the 20k+ clones. But I bet if someone released a midi cabinet version for a few hundred bucks or even 1-2k people would buy it. A less extreme version could be a system 10/15 midi panel for considerably less. It would be a quarter of the size. Sell it for 499 or 899 with a sequencer midi panel combo.
Excellent idea, something I had never thought possible.. I have quite a few midi devices, so i will try some to do different things over the next few weeks and let you know my findings!
"Basically, it gets the job done, and that's about it." Behringer in a nutshell. Their stuff is relatively cheap, but works better than their price would indicate.
The most interesting part of this video is getting comments like this. I've had Behringer mixers and stuff for years that work but aren't flawless. I guess that's about all you can expect for the price though lol.
i use a worlde midi controller to do the same stuff. its great. I like the worlde midi cause its ngot the same amount of knobs plus a few extra options including sliders for each channel as well. i recomend it!
I got an x-touch mini a couple years ago for as a Lightroom controller and ended up getting a loupedeck anyway but I barely use these controllers now once I've learned most of the keyboard shortcuts on the keyboard. I might pull it back out and give MidiKey2Key a try.
We are very much on the same wavelength. Not sure if you've seen Contoller Lab before but they have MIDI support so you can do some really dope automations with it.
I can't see using this for lightroom realistically. What I could see using this for would be video games. Just seems like it would be fun to play around with for like a flight sim or even battlefield type game.
I would love it if you can find a replacement for the C Panel thing you showcased a while back. Controlling various volumes for different applications would come in handy. Or if this software allows it then that would be great too. Though, I'm not thrilled about being the diagnostic guy if something breaks in software.
I might be able to help you with that. I have been working on prototyping a control panel of sorts to control different application volume levels with motorized faders/sliders. Still very much DIY, but I haven’t had too many bugs as of late
Re-enacting a scene from Red dwarf when Rimmer being offered a place on a starship that has 6 knobs at his workstation says “Tell me more about these knobs” 😂
BOME MIDI Translator is a much better alternative if you want way more indepth control over macros. That being said it isn't free if you want to be able to save project files.
I though about doing this myself a few months ago, but paying 100 dolars for it when I already have a touchscreen next to my keyboard was not justified. And then of course I got overwhelmed by work and I had to stop doing videos for a while so it would have been useless anyways xD
Thanks for this video! Do you think it is possible to map the knobs so you can use them for the volume sliders on the mixer in adobe premiere? Would be so much easier to move the volume sliders with the knobs while your scoring your edited timeline. Thanks!
I like this idea but edit with ACR/Bridge (because I'm old lol) not LR. The interfaces are almost identical now - think it would work outside of LR or would I need to program everything individually?
I stopped everything as soon as I saw there was a new #WorkFromHype video! 🥳 I love Behringer products. Their support SUCKS, but their products are so much better than their prices suggest. I bought a small diaphragm condenser microphones, new, for $30 (on sale) and I LOVE it. Came with 2 capsules and it sounds awesome.
Really like your content, those devices are awesome and is great to see someone focusing their content on them. I have been thinking of using a pen tablet as an input device for meetings note taking or just drawing what I'm saying to my work mates. Do you think this a viable solution? Maybe this can be a future video idea for you
Very interesting! I recently bought an Akai Midimix for music mixing (in Reaper) because I hate moving sliders with a mouse. Hadn't occurred to me to use it for other things. The computer I do music on I also use for video editing (in Kdenlive). I'm guessing that midi control mapping utilities will be available in Linux (Ubuntu). This could be *very* useful. Do I need a macro keyboard for my office/coding machine? Dunno, have to think about that. The X Touch does look very sweet at the price.
I agree the possibilities are exciting! That said, for coding and building macros id recommend something a bit more reliable. Maybe an Elgato StreamDeck, or really any macropad with a good UI for programming macros. The biggest issue with Midi (like this video) is you're on your own if something goes wrong lol.
Hey Man - interesting product if you need that type of thing. The link to your speaker stands doesn't work, could you tell what the name is please - thanks
It seems like, every time you make a knob adjustmet, there is a brief flicker where the image drops out to a black screen, for a frame or two. Is that noticeable in person? Or, is it just a timing artifact with your camera?
I'm guessing it has something to do with the camera shooting at 24fps. There's no flickering to the eye when using Lightroom. I probably should have used a different clip lol.
There's a video on my channel with that item in the thumbnail if you want to learn more. It's basically a volume monitor that I attached to my keyboard.
Thanks for watching! The hoodie is from Carhartt. I don't have a link but if you search "Carhartt Hoodie Yellow" it should pop up for you. Hope that helps.
I think it's a waste of money because the encoders are stepped (where you can feel a click in each step) and too coarse running. Compared to the encoders on the akai apc 40 mk2, this behringer is a bad deal. I try it at home... and send it back to seller.
It does not unfortunately. Adobe does not support plugins in Lightroom CC, so any controller like this or the LoupeDeck only works with Lightroom Classic.
This is pretty much spot on. Except for using the knobs to have that fine control which I prefer. It really all comes down to what you prefer and for me, I struggle to remember keyboard shortcuts so I like devices like this. Anyhow, thanks for watching.
Hey that's a fair point. I was trying to show how much cheaper it is than a LoupeDeck (270.00) but I couldn't fit all that in the title. (The algorithm would hate me for it lol)
You know there's a difference between cheap and inexpensive? Cheap when describing an item implies that something is not well-made or not made of durable materials and will not last long, therefore it's not a good idea to buy it.
I watch every video you make. Best reviewer on youtube hands down. You tell a story that gets straight to the point. No rambling. No time-wasting non-sense. You provide plenty of example. Keep up the good work man.

There's a video on my channel with that item in the thumbnail if you want to learn more. It's basically a volume monitor that I attached to my keyboard.
Why is the whole vidoe about lightroom? What about pausing or fastforwarding videos? or controlling volume? or photoshop brush sizes?
Mabey is ok för VirtualDJ and OBS studio... Wll tnx for sharing!

Hey! Been following your videos for a while now! Do you have a link for that cool yellow hoodie at 0:11? Thank you!
Thanks for watching! The hoodie is from Carhartt. I don't have a link but if you search "Carhartt Hoodie Yellow" it should pop up for you. Hope that helps.
Need more keys? How about a Logitech G15 keyboard?
Would this work with Color Grading in DaVinci Resolve?
Looks interesting and I actually have video equipment that uses MIDI controllers.
Would it work with Capture One?

I think it's a waste of money because the encoders are stepped (where you can feel a click in each step) and too coarse running. Compared to the encoders on the akai apc 40 mk2, this behringer is a bad deal. I try it at home... and send it back to seller.

Hey does anyone knows if those can be repurposed for color correcting application? Like in davinci resolve or something?
It’s mentioned in the video that he used a program that allowed custom macro creation for any program. Watch the video again.
I wonder if it will work good in photoshop or a DAW Like Reaper?
MIDI controllers are designed for DAWs. He keeps calling at a MIDI keyboard for some reason but it's a MIDI controller.
does it owrk with LR CC, the cloud version of lightroom?
It does not unfortunately. Adobe does not support plugins in Lightroom CC, so any controller like this or the LoupeDeck only works with Lightroom Classic.
I am more interested in the keyboard, where did you get it???🤔🤔🤔🤔
The white keyboard featured in this video is the Akko Alice Plus. Google "alice layout keyboards" if you're interested in this style of typing!
@@WorkFromHype thanks 👍
or considering it looks like you have a programmable keyboard, you can just re-create the same macros and ditch the extra hardware.
This is pretty much spot on. Except for using the knobs to have that fine control which I prefer. It really all comes down to what you prefer and for me, I struggle to remember keyboard shortcuts so I like devices like this. Anyhow, thanks for watching.
does this only works with lightroom classic or with lithtroom which i prefer?
Lightroom Classic only. It's a bummer for sure.
$12.38 per knob? That’s a bargain, that is!
What is the light bar thing at 0:15

If "cheap" equals $100, then _sure_ why not? Was expecting it to be < $60 like that controller at 5:31
Hey that's a fair point. I was trying to show how much cheaper it is than a LoupeDeck (270.00) but I couldn't fit all that in the title. (The algorithm would hate me for it lol)
Been using MidiKey2Key for years. It's so great!
yo. which monitors and more importantly what are those monitor stands? clamped to the desk? nevermind, read the description lol.
You know there's a difference between cheap and inexpensive? Cheap when describing an item implies that something is not well-made or not made of durable materials and will not last long, therefore it's not a good idea to buy it.
