      Since they've said they have no intention of updating older subclasses, it's up to us to homebrew. I highly recommend Nerd Immersion's fixing the sorcerer part 3 for this.

    • @steveme6664
      @steveme6664 3 года назад +8

      The hardest part about updating past ones is the draconic because of all the different types. You can just go here are some extra fire spells because they may be blue instead of red etc. and making a list for each sounds like too much. But I do agree it should be available for all sorcerer subclasses.

      @@steveme6664 dude, look at what they did with the Genie warlock: one spell for each type and one spell that is common among them all (like Dragon's Breath). It's much easier than you make it out to be: picking one spell per level for the dragon of each damage type.

      Honestly, they should really rewrite all the other sorcerers. The idea that you get a bonus spell list that you can play around with a bit is so good. I want a world where Draconic sorcerers can pick any evocation spell, I want Wild Magic sorcerers to be able to swap a spell and ROLL A DICE to potentially get random ass spells from any class. I want storm sorcerers to get call lightning!

    • @crimfan
      @crimfan 3 года назад +16

      @@override367 I agree... this makes sense for all Charisma casters. It really helps differentiate them, too. There are a number of cases where I really wonder what WotC was thinking, too, such as not giving Hexblades Steel Wind Strike, which really feels super iconic for them.
      This would also help differentiate Bards. Magical Secrets could be a College of Lore thing with the other colleges getting an extra list of known that reinforce their themes. The College of Lore would then get Magical Secrets, representing their propensity for learning lore.
      College of Swords with Shield, Steel Wind Strike, Armor of Agathys, etc., makes them better at swording and feels a lot more thematic than many on the standard bard list.

Low hit points, a basically useless saving throw proficiency, the weakness of a lot of the class features, and the cost in money and time to get new spells. It has a subtle spell component but you can combine it with other metamagic like quickened or twinned unlike subtle.Also sacrificing lower spell slots as bonus to cast spells like synaptic static constantly is very powerful for combat not to mention you can't counterspell those because of how counterspelling works and you basically lose nothing for it .Also being able to cast divination spells like scrying more than couple of times really feels like you are a psychic character for rping as well.

      @jiminkpen9750 3 года назад +11

      Yeah, psionic Sorcery is great, I personally think one of the best Sorcery features.
      You can cast a 3rd level spell either with a 3rd level spell slot, or 3 Sorcery points. If you used Sorcery points you can just convert a 3rd level slot between combat to regain the Sorcery points. This has given you subtle spell plus (no mat component and could add an additional metamagic) for free as long as you make sure you have your Sorcery points maxed between combats. To me that's so good.

    • @jefftabrum6930
      @jefftabrum6930 3 года назад +9

      @@jiminkpen9750 Oh it's even better then that. Since you get sorcery points equal to level from melting a spell slot, and this allows you to cast a spell using sorcery points equal to level, you can turn lower level spell slots into casting of higher level spells at no penalty. The amount of flexibility you get from this is absurd.

    One little thing about the 6th level Abarrent Feature. It is not like a free subtle spell, it does more. Subtle spell only removes somatic and verbal componenets not material. So if you would cast a spell that has material components, be they normal, costly or consumed, you still need to touch them/a focus to cast a spell. And iirc in XGE it says someone can still perceive you casting if you have a spell that only has an M component.
    The abarrent feature on the other hand removes _all_ components unless they are consumed. So nor need for a docus or even costly components as long as they are not consumed.

      You are absolutely right, but it's not as useful as you might imagine infortunately. I did a deep analysis of the aberrant mind spell list for my personal use and infortunately very few useful spells are actively improved by using psionic over subtle. The good thing is, it might get better along the way, with new spells being released.

    • @maltava4534
      @maltava4534 3 года назад +1

      While this is true it is next to irrelevant. You can use a small crystal orb as a focus so putting your hand in your pocket or using it under a table will accomplish the same thing. A wizard holding a staff is the expected sight. Unless there is some visual indicator on the focus when casting the spells it is impossible to tell. The rare instance that this will come into play is measured in less than once per campaign.

    • @larstollefsen1236
      @larstollefsen1236 3 года назад +4

      The free subtle is fine, but your kind of missing the point of Psionic Sorcery. Flexible casting normally wastes power as it takes more points then the slot is worth. This feature lets you use Spell Blending straight out of Pathfinder so its very powerful. Now you can cast a third level spell with just a 2nd and 1st slot.

      I'd loved to see an improved Berserker Barbarian, Purple Dragon Knight Fighter, 4 Elements Monk, and maybe a few of the other "C" ranked archetypes that could use a bit of a boost here or there.
      It's not an exaggeration to say that the a subclass picked from Xanathar's or Tasha's is likely to be a bit stronger then one from the PHB (with a few exceptions). Though it might cause some confusion amongst newer players over which "version" of the class is the correct one, so I know WotC isn't going to do this, at least not for a while, but the Tasha's class updates haven't caused much confusion, so it could work.

      Yeah. The discount compared to general spell slot creation on its own is a fairly big deal, and you're getting the subtle+ component on it. I feel clockwork v. Aberrant is gonna be dependent on your campaign. Aberrant for exploration and social, clockwork for high combat. Clockwork also synergies well if you have another control caster, especially a wizard.

    I think they didn't understood the 6th level feature of the aberrant mind. You're getting subtle spell for free. For example, to cast a 3rd level spell subtly, you spend a 3rd-level slot and 1 sorcery point, a 3rd-level slot can be converted into 3 sorcery points, so you're expending the equivalent of 4 sorcery points. With this feature, you spend only 3 points. Plus, you don't have to spend ONE of your TWO metamagics

      I kind of agree with the guys I'd still take subtle though, just because it's so thematic. One of the benefits of playing 'strong' classes is you can dive further into the flavor of it all without compromising your effectiveness. So for instance, I like the idea of eschewing all elemental damage spells with the Aberrant Mind, making Chill Touch your attack cantrip and building out with stuff like Suggestion, Tasha's Mind Whip, Hypnotic Pattern.

    I'd like to bring up that With psyonic sorcery you actually get a massive discount, with ps it's 1 point per slot level. Whereas the points to slots table prices the equivalent slots mutch higher, with 1st giving 2 , 2nd giving 3, 3rd giving 5 4th giving 6 and 5th using 7 this means if you cast the spell by converting the equivalent slot to sp then you come out with 1-2 extra sorcery points for half your spells massively increasing milage and meaning most metamajic that can be used is paid for by the cheaper spell, which can be done because you gain subtle spell without using metamajic, on the spell, so that sixth level ability for me sound's amazing, definitely more than is given credit

    Clockwork Cavalcade
    18th-level Clockwork Soul feature
    You summon spirits of order to expunge disorder around you. As an action, you summon the spirits in a 30-foot cube originating from you. The spirits look like Modrons or other constructs of your choice. *The spirits are intangible and invulnerable, and they create the following effects within the cube before vanishing:*
    The spirits restore up to 100 hit points, divided as you choose among any number of creatures of your choice in the cube.
    Any damaged objects entirely in the cube are repaired instantly.
    Every spell of 6th level or lower ends on creatures and objects of your choice in the cube.
    Once you use this action, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest, unless you spend 7 sorcery points to use it again.

    The 6th lvl abberant mind feature is actually really good. You can convert spell slots into sorcerery points equal to the level of the spell (so a 5th lvl spell turns into 5 sorcerery points as a BA).
    So you want to cast suggestion that is subtle spelled? You could do one of the two options:
    A.) cast a second level and a subtle spell only using your action. This uses a second level spell and 1 SP (which is equal to using your BA to convert that spell into 2 SP and spend 1 SP for subtle).
    Or
    B.) Use your BA to convert a 2nd level slot into 2 SP then use those 2 SP to cast suggestion.
    So, ultimately, for the cost of a BA you are actually getting to cast that spell as a subtle spell for free.

    When Monty was talking about the Clockwork Soul and the Moebius strip of order-becomes-chaos, and then Kelly talking about controlling Fate, I was absolutely bouncing with delight. My first thought with that subclass, after the obvious clockmaker, was a *gambler*. Because of that first feature, Restore Balance. Stripping away advantage and disadvantage, and stripping everything back to the pure dice roll. Imposing order, making it so that all other things become equal, so that chaos, raw chance, can express itself most purely. Exactly what you said. I loved it for a gambler who really believes in luck and chance, because with the Clockwork Soul there’s no stacking the deck or shaving the dice. Well, not until later, Trance of Order probably does count as shaving the dice just a little bit. But until that point, it’s just the roll. The perfect platonic gamble. It’s such a fantastic theme and interaction of ideals. (And there's maybe an interesting character arc there, building from Restore Balance up to Trance of Order later, from believing in raw luck to allowing yourself to nudge the scales just a little bit more ... it's weird because it almost reads as loosening morals in step with tightening law, which could be an interesting thing to play with)
    I *do* still love Aberrant Mind just a little bit more, because Lovecraftian, but the bit of me that loves the gamblers in westerns really really likes the Clockwork Soul too.

For my shadow sorcerer I took Shadow Touched (twin cause fear is a fantastic cheap debuff), and I feel like mirroring this feat in the shadow sorcerer spell list (enchantment and necromancy) would be an excellent approach for that subclass in particular. Maybe reduce the additional options to one additional option at 3rd level (e.g. invisibility) as they already receive darkness at that level and they can't swap that spell out without losing a class feature.

    Loved the discussion of the convergence of order and chaos. This can be seen vividly in 20th century art music: John Cage used the I Ching to generate entire pieces of music aleatorically (total chaos), while serialists like Pierre Boulez sought to unify pieces through whereby every parameter of a given piece (pitch, rhythm, articulation, dynamics, etc) was controlled by the same numerical construct. The end result? The impression is uncannily similar! (Compare Cage, Music of Changes and Boulez, Structures, for instance). Something cosmic about that.

    17 Clockwork Soul multiclassed with 3 levels of Echo Knight;
    -you get to fight in the melee without fear of getting hit,
    -still use gwm (with Trance of Order so you’re negating that -5 basically)
    -and attack twice equal to your con modifier,
    -you get more battlefield control as well as movement,
    -and now you can cast hefty spells as a bonus action (like haste),

    Edit: I'm wrong here. I saw sorcerer level 9 and thought spell level 9. This feature tops out at 5th level as the comments mention.
    You need a higher grade than S for Abberant. The "exchange sorcery points for spells", is not only at a discount, but is not limited to the max 5th level spell. At the most ridiculous, that is two additional 9th level spells, cast subtlety. Add on the extra spell list to grab those ridiculous spells from other spell lists and it's straight stupid.

    Another feature of the psionic sorcery class feature is that it does not require a bonus action unlike flexible casting. This means you can still cast mind sliver, then quicken a disabling spell like dominate person or hold monster all without expending a slot and just a word. Bonus points if you subtle spell the cantrip.

    Couple notes:
    A couple notes on the 6th level abilities:
    Rather than casting a spell and using subtle metamagic (for a third level spell this might mean a 3rd level slot, and 1 sorcery point) you can use psionic sorcery, spend 3 sorcery points, and then convert that 3rd level slot into 3 sorcery points. You are overall up in resources by 1 sorcery point. It's actually just more efficient.
    The 6th level Clockwork Soul ability, Bastion of Law, has some applications because Clockwork Soul can get Armor of Agathys on their spell list, and then if they reduce the incoming damage you can keep the AoA spell active and keep dealing damage with it.
    And yeah, 1st-10th level is definitely the high point of these classes. Probably stronger than a wizard at these levels, but weaker at 13th+ level.

The altimate blaster with free meta magic on every casting! Twin (can+1st level spells) - distance + transmute - all 3 are great options for FireBolt! Not to mention the effect on Fire Ball or MMM!

  • @illoney5663

    One point about using the Aberrant Mind's Psionic Sorcery ability, yes it's not a good "trade" so to speak, but when you consider that you can convert a spell slot to a number of sorcery points equal to its level, that means that you could (for instanct) cast Suggestion using this feature, and then turn a second level spell slot into sorcery points, effectively meaning that the cost of the spell was as normal, a second level spell slot, but it didn't cost anything to use subtle spell.
    It also makes it more efficient when you want to throw out more high level spells, converting one second and one third level spell slot for another casting of Synaptic Static is significantly better than expending two second level and one third level.

    A lot of DMs are going to be adding expanded lists to the other Sorcerer subclasses at their tables; I know I will be. The question is how long it'll take the "official" game to catch up, if it ever does.

    A good basis for Draconic Bloodline sorcerer spell lists might be the spells each dragon type got in past editions. I mainly know 3.5, but in that each type of dragon had a list of spells it learned as it got stronger, and they were good for rounding out the dragon's themes without just being "here is your list of colour-coded attack spells". For instance, brass dragons get Talk to Animals from an early age because they will try to start a conversation with anything. Blue dragons as desert dwellers get some illusion spells and Create/Destroy Water.

    One thing with the clockwork cavalcade is the wording cause it doesn't specify you have to pick one of the effects, it says and i quote
    "CLOCKWORK CAVALCADE
    18th-level Clockwork Soul feature
    You summon spirits of order to expunge disorder
    around you. As an action, you summon the spirits in
    a 30-foot cube originating from you. The spirits look
    like modrons or other constructs of your choice.
    The spirits are intangible and invulnerable, and they
    create the following effects within the cube before
    vanishing:
    • The spirits restore up to 100 hit points, divided
    as you choose among any number of creatures of
    your choice in the cube.
    • Any damaged objects entirely in the cube are re-
    paired instantly.
    • Every spell of 6th level or lower ends on creatures
    and objects of your choice in the cube.
    Once you use this action, you can't use it again un-
    til you finish a long rest, unless you spend 7 sorcery
    points to use it again."
    so it gives you all of them, if im not being dumb. So quite fuckin good if ya ask me.

    The "Expanded Spell Lists" were called "Bloodline Spells" in earlier editions. Their removal from 5th Edition was shortsighted and crippling to the sorcerer.
    That is why I homebrewed bloodline spells back into 5e over a year ago.

    The official release of Tasha's did do something good in favour of the other Sorcerer subclasses; it gives a clean method of homebrewing them up to similar levels of contending with other spellcasters. I checked online for similar ideas and added my own. From it, I have easy-made innate spell tables for all Sorcerer subclasses. It's a simple and effective solution for anyone that feels Sorcerers are distinctly lacking before Tasha's.
