    • @racerex340
      @racerex340 11 месяцев назад +94

      Has worked for Apple for years and their customers still literally throw money at them. PC manufacturers have also started ramping up more soldered storage as well in the hopes that it drives better product segmentation upsell and some sort of uptick in the refresh cycle. The latter is moronic with PC users though, because with Apple, an Apple user might by the base model and need to replace it after three years but they're almost certainly buying another Apple as there are no other MacOS options, but with PC, a user can switch between brands every upgrade cycle and still retain 98% of the same experience. It's greed, pure and simple, and we as consumers should shun them because of it, if only for the huge increase in E-waste they create as a result. RAM and SSD's should be upgradeable in every laptop or desktop computer, period.

      @@racerex340 If they don't, people can vote with their dollars and buy laptops that are using CAMM2. That said, right now, I prefer soldered LPDDR5X on a thin laptop over DDR5 so I'm not faulting manufacturers for soldered this year. Next year, I will fault them and call them out.

      Moving away from the barrel connector does strike me as bizarre. There's lots of good quality power bricks out there that use the old school barrel connector. As for USB-C charging, that has it's own issues of fragility and for voltage regulators melting on the laptop's motherboard. I can see why ASUS would want to have a dedicated charging port that handles only power without worrying about data, but the new connector looks like a miss for me.

I have no idea what people are doing to their ports to cause breakages, I've never had a Mini-USB port break on me, let alone a USB-C port. If people are so worried about this, why isn't it such a problem with phones where everyone, even Apple is moving towards USB-C? CAMM2 has its own issues, and no information suggests that Intel will adopt it. It will need to go through a year or two of testing for QC and reliability and therefore unlikely to be seen in the medium term. 4070 ruins the balance in a bad way. Costs way too much due to 70 series branding yet comes with only 8GB VRAM. It stinks badly. Imagine paying 2500 usd+ for laptop with 8GB VRAM.
    The 12GB 4080 125W G14 2023 remains a unique option as it's literally the only laptop on the planet to pair a pheonix range APU with a 4080 giving both good battery life and exceptional performance for the form factor.
    For instance the 4080 125W is 50% faster than the 90W 4070 on the 2024 G14 and let's not forget 50% more VRAM! The old G14 also had on upgradable memory stick and with around 170W overall thermal capacity - it was an engineering marvel. The tiny thing hits a whopping 19k on CBR23 multicore when undervolted as the 7940HS has official support for curve optimizer!

    I bought the 2022 G14 based on all the great reviews, but unfortunately, my experience has been disappointing. Despite one RMA, the motherboard developed issues that cause games to crash repeatedly. After researching online, I found that this seems to be a common problem with G14 laptops. For anyone considering buying one, I'd strongly recommend getting an extended warranty from the seller.

    -OLED screen that has not been yet tested for burn-in with lower frequency than previous models,

    It's hard to say that this laptop are for gaming enthusiast anymore. With the lack of upgradibility, such high res screen for the small form factor and lower tdp, it's definitely not for the hardcore gamer, but it might be the windows macbook killer that we're looking for. Students doing coding, video editing or 3D design work definitely could consider this over other 16 inch gaming laptops and over macbooks. I'm actually quite happy to see how thin and light the G14 has become, but I do wish that it's maybe 50-100 grams lighter or a few cm thicker to give it a larger battery, imagine the battery life of the G14 if it has a 99.9Whr battery when it's already so good with 73Whr

    I have both. The 2024 is just simply more enjoyable overall. The 2023 is a faster gamer, however. It has a more "normal" display resolution as well. It does run hotter though. I hit 95C on the CPU frequently on the 2023. Don't have this issue on the 2024. If I had to pick it would be the 2024, obviously. But I practically stole the 2023. It was the display model at the BestBuy in San Francisco and I got it for very cheap ($800). Lots of greasy fingers touched it, but with a little elbow grease, love, and repasting became a formidable system that is in perfect condition now. Now damage or wear at all. I got the 2024 on sale last week for $1100. I just had to at that price. The plan was to use both and see if the additional cost of the 2024 was worth it. Turns out it was, but I'll be keeping both.

    Fps compromise is nothing. As long as you can get 60fps consistently in all games, it's great. My 2021 g14 averaged about 80-90 fps on unlimited fps setting, maxed out, on 144hz, and was still buttery smooth but stuttered a bit because game isn't optimized for that fps. So I switched display and game to 60fps/hz and it was even smoother than ever. You're not missing out on much here for everything else that's included. My 2021 g14 lasted 3 years with no issues until I broke it. I think the g14 will be a nice upgrade for me with that beautiful display and thinner design! And I know it will last more than a few years if it still holds up to its name. Definitely going to get it. Asus rog serious is absolutely the best quality and value of there. There are plenty of thick heavier bulkier gaming laptops with replaceable RAM. No one is forcing you to buy the G14. Many do not care about RAM upgradeability; we buy what we need. Also, the new RAM is different from what you think. If you have 32GB and want to upgrade to 64GB then you cannot buy another 32GB module, you have to buy 64GB and replace the 32GB which becomes e-waste if you cannot sell it. So you wont save money and it will be more hassle than it is worth.

Ram can fail and I?d rather buy a dimm and get it going than sending it to a technitian or replacing the device outright. The only reason this was done was for thinness, which is stupid because people who liked the g14 liked it for it's good thinness to power compromise, it was already thin enough, but they kept pushing in that direction to the point they compromised on the other important aspects of a laptop.

    I would be all over this laptop but I cannot stand screen wobble and this laptop has the worst screen wobble I have seen in a while. You can see it even when just typing on the keyboard. Thanks for the review. Thumbs up!

    So, in trying to get the newest model to run as cool and low power consumption as possible, they basically turned the 4070 into a more expensive 4060. Literally the only benefit over the previous model is that OLED display.

      No. It's thinner and lighter as well. The sacrifices were in an effort to make it more portable.

    • @DavidStruveDesigns
      @DavidStruveDesigns 11 месяцев назад

      @@HardwareCanucks Because making it a little more thicker and heavier suddenly makes it non-portable? I still have my old ThinkPad which is an absolute chonker in comparison to most modern laptops, and that thing is still totally portable in a backpack. Have people's spines and legs become so much weaker that they can't hold up to just an "average" (I guess, old is the right word now) thickness laptop?? Just seems like they're sacrificing just a little too much to make these things comically lightweight and thin - I'd rather have the extra performance that comes with extra weight than something so thin and light you're essentially paying more for a worse overall usage experience.

      @@DavidStruveDesignsI hate people like you who r just oblivious to what asus is doing. • @andyH_England
      @andyH_England 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@justinweinstein22 I agree. There are plenty of garish gaming laptops if that is what you are after. The G14 seems a sensible business move to explore other segments. I have always looked for a premium 14 inch ultrabook with a bit more graphical punch ( a dGPU) and it is nice to see another option for potential buyers like me.

    • @DavidStruveDesigns
      @DavidStruveDesigns 11 месяцев назад

      @@andyH_England What's so wrong with asking for a non-garish professional looking laptop but NOT wanting it so stupidly thin that its performance has been throttled down to such an extent that it's actually worse than a previous model with a lower end GPU? Basically all I'm asking for is the same overall laptop design, but just make it actually a bit thicker so the thing can be properly cooled for a change. This manufacturer aren't the only ones making their professional models too thin for my liking - they all seem to be doing it, and it's frustrating when the only option that actually gets cooled properly is a garish gaming laptop.

    So, they designed a proprietary charging port to use more than 300 watts, and then implemented it on a laptop with sub 200w power requirements. I guess I get it from a tooling and integration perspective, but it just seems like wasted added cost on something like this.

    @maxweinbach3996 11 месяцев назад +2

    Sorry but this review seems a bit flawed. You mentioned in your testing that you turned off keyboard backlight, do you do that for all laptops you review? How can you compare battery life? One of the USB-C ports is USB 4, not 3.2. Why do you say "I beleive" for certain specs; either you know or you don't? They dialled back the power for 2024 - it could be due to design but it could also be due to heat. The 2023 model ran hot. Why didn't you go into thermals? Also, the 2023 usb-c port didn't bypass the battery even if you set a limit, leading to battery degradation. Does the 2024 do the same?

    • @HardwareCanucks

      The methodologies we used here are carried through every laptop review we do. They dialed back the power to make a more compact form factor without adding even more to the noise profile of previous generations.
