@lindomar 20 Turkeys are indigenous to North America. I live in New England- the northeast United States, and we have flocks of turkeys that live in the local graveyard- I think because its safe and enclosed, they end up staying there.

HOLY TOLEDO. I honestly didn’t realize so many people knew/loved Edward Gorey. I discovered him in the sixth grade when I found John Bellairs’ children’s horror books that were illustrated by Gorey. Absolutely chilling and stunning work.
I watch your videos everysinglenight before bed these days. I am bursting with appreciation, wonderment and gratefulness for your hardwork, dedication, sense of humor, knowledge and passion. I am going to read all your books when I get my hands on them. And I wish more than anything, I could come work with you. You are an ideal person and boss that I wish I could be around. I live in Maine, and I've been looking at potential jobs in your field. I know I would have to start at the very bottom and work very hard for many years, but I know it would be worth it and fulfilling. Thank you for all that you give, Caitlin. I brought your channel up to my mom the other day... no clue how that came about but anyway.. next thing I know my mom and I are having a nice, not sad convo about death and how she wants cremated and her ashes spread in these woods we know, but that it has to b fall when we do it and how my dad wants to b on some mountain in N.C ( we live in ohio??) but basically I had no idea, and here they had such specific wishes and I would have had no idea. We laughed about my sister fulfilling these wishes walking in the woods with an urn of ashes.(shes not really the outdoorsy type) My mom said I'll prob handle that one on my own.LOL. but it was so comforting knowing that when the time comes.. which in NO way am i ready for, Im not that death positive yet... but when it does.. I'll know what their true wishes were. I then continued on about green burials, how embalming is the devil, aquamation, and every other thing I've learned from you in the past few months binge watching your channel. It was honestly one of the best conversations me and my mother have had in awhile.. We laughed a lot.. I guess someone mentioned to my grandma that she could be buried and planted as a tree or something and her response to that was... "Oh why so in a couple years theirs a storm and I get struck by lightning and I explode, or some man comes with a chainsaw and chops me down! I don't think so!" haha.. So prob not going to change her plans but it definitely opened things up for my parents and I to have more talks in the future... Would never have happened without you and the hysterical yet very informative way you teach us about death, the funeral industry and the fact that we have options! So thanku for doing what you do..

every time I bring this channel up to my mom she asks me if I'm obsessed with death. I've been able to have some open conversations about it but still. my dad is chronically ill with a degenerative condition and I have no idea what his wishes are because he won't talk about it.
@@comradegarrett1202 - You can't make him talk about it. He probably doesn't want to think about it lest his death become too real to him. I hope he has something written down so you and your mother don't end up arguing about it.
I'm so happy that you were able to talk to your parents about their wishes. My mom was always sure to tell me what she wanted and I didn't think much of it at the time because we talked about anything and everything, we were very open and honest with each other so death wasn't off limits at all. But I was so very grateful that I knew what to do when the time did come. It was one less thing to worry about and I was able to grieve for my own loss rather than worry about what she may or may not have wanted. She told me everything from being dnr to not spending any more money on cremation than I absolutely had to. (This channel helped me with that because I never would have known to ask specifically for "direct cremation. All inclusive" if I hadn't seen the video a few months beforehand. I don't think I would have known that I could call around and ask about prices even. I just figured that a body was assigned a funeral home and that they were all the same.)
I also know that my mom wanted some of her ashes to be spread out in Massachusetts in the fall. Somewhere in a forest full of bright leaves changing colours. It will take a while for me to get there but she's not exactly getting any older or going anywhere in the meantime so I'm sure she'd understand.
Most of the people who were born and raised in the lower Appalachian mountains want to have our remains remain here. It's both traditional and something we feel inside too, an attachment to this land that transcends time and is always an integral part of who we are. Maybe we can't tell you where we will be tomorrow, but we can tell you where we will be when this life is over. That's the one solid thing in out lives we can count on.
And for anyone who is scattering ashes, just go do what was wanted quietly- do not ask permission or tell anyone beforehand as it's often denied or illegal in many places. It hurts nobody and nothing so just do it and know you've done right.
What the heck is it with wild turkeys and cemeteries? There's a whole gaggle of them at the historic Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, California too! I guess wild turkeys are death enthusiasts of the feathered variety.

As a deathling in the south, a Death Salon would be uplifting and an amazing opportunity for so many people who feel isolated. I hope there can be a Death Salon in NC, VA, GA, TN, or SC soon.

I could definitely ask my company if we could maybe set something up in Louisville (since I'm more centrally located there). Then, depending on the turnout it might inspire them to branch out and do their own kind of Death Salon Tour! FLORIDA NEEDS YOU AND YOUR WONDERFUL TEAM! We have the highest rate of senior citizens in our state (and thus, death rates sky rocket here). So many people in my community lack the education about death and how to regain control over your own mortality. Older people included need to know that they still have every right to control their fate! I love what you're doing, and I want you to know after 3 years of obessing over your videos and other content I've completed my AA and joined the mortuary program at my community college! Thank you so much for being such an inspiration and beaken of death positivity.

Same! I didnt know she was going to be there.. and I am at Mount Auburn all the time. In fact just a few weeks ago I made a comment asking her to come back to Mount Auburn for her book tour. Little did I know she was here likely at the time I made that comment.
When I got into the death industry, I emailed Alua Arthur for advice and was shocked when she responded! She was so kind and gave me encouragement. I'm in the legal side of death care (deceased estates) in South Africa, so I'm so glad she was on the panel. Absolutely wonderful woman.

You're amazing! The personality you have is perfect for this line of work. In my father's funeral as well as my husband's the men (only men worked at both funeral homes) were so dull and had no emotions at all. Their face never ever changed... They creeped me out more than the funeral home...
I never thought about the effect of class & race upon people’s final day & the effect upon the survivors.
ya if you are poor, it sucks. my family was lower middle class for the most part and all had sudden deaths. most ppl didn't care to help, so most the family have simply plotswith simple headstones
most don't get lucky, and the corpse get unclaimed simply because the family couldn't afford anything.
My parents are on the Cemetery Association here in our small town so I've started to get more involved (especially since I'm pursuing a MA in History in the next few years). I've found out that our town's cemetery didn't accept black people or Hispanic people until some time in the 1970s I believe and there's still a much smaller, less organized/maintained cemetery outside of town that many of the black families still use. It's something that people truly just don't think about with our cultures way of dealing with death.
And sadly it goes beyond class and race to the type of religion in the region, which is sort of like putting people in a class or race. My great uncle killed himself after being kicked in the head by a horse way back in the Depression era years and the entire family, including the small town doctor, had to pretend it was an accident because if anyone dared admitted it was a suicide he couldn't be buried in the family plot. It was such a ridiculously unnecessary lie everyone was shamed into because of the Catholic church. Almost like blackmail in a way. Lying is a sin unless it's to keep your family from burning in hell and buried in a pauper's grave away from the rest of their family, then you can live with the shame of lying. Bad enough the guy suffered mental illness because of being kicked in the head and the family had to deal with those issues, but then all the rest of it just made it more horrible.
Rose C I had a cousin who committed suicide. His family faced the same decisions. I grew up in a fairly accepting urban catholic parish, his family was country. If he had died in town, there probably wouldn’t have been anywhere near the stigma. Money, social or religious stigmas, seems to me that should all be set aside at the time of death.

Well, In my neighborhood, I think a extremely colorful and light death salon would have great outcomes. I live near a lot of old people, and if death is seen as a good thing, they won’t be afraid of dying. Also a finance and last will focus could also help them.

Eh Meh -- it may seem counter intuitive, but some elders are terrified of death: even discussing it is taboo among my older sisters and mom (mom is over 90 -- still drives her car, etc., but fears death like it was contagious.) My siblings refuse to discuss mom's death, as does mom. She says her wishes are all written down, but won't talk about any specifics. It's oppressive when there's so much resistance. However, if that's how they wish to travel, it's their choice. Sorry, long post.

I like in progressive Tucson. My community would probably really embrace you if they knew about you. We mostly consist of aging hippies (not me) and college students (also not me). I found out about the need for services like yours through a series of personal losses in my life. Since we have a huge aging populace that is open minded to many types of burial, please consider Arizona in the future. Tucson is prettier and rock stars live here, but Phoenix has more people. Bisbee is also a lovely alternative since it has a huge artistic community. Hope to see you soon!

I really like that antique singer sewing machine in the background. I just got my first antique machine and it’s a singer 99 made in 1920. I’m not sure if you sew on that one but it’s a really incredible machine and I think yours is just beautiful.

i live near philadelphia and i think something based around the basic information regarding the industry and the your options regarding your own death or when someone else dies would be great especially if its geared toward helping people understand the financial aspect more and giving people options. Also, I may live near philly but i'm in the suburbs and I think what i'm going to say rings true for most suburbs...a lot of them are full of older people or middle aged folks with older family members and having some basic information in a positive supportive environment may help it seem less intimidating and less frightening and help them feel more in control when it does inevitably happen.

I’m excited to find out where the next Death Solon is as well as there possibly being smaller venues to go to. Both would be a great way to visit more people, cemeteries and ideas.
My pair of doulas were full spectrum doulas. Supporting not only live births but still births and abortions... have you spoken on that topic yet?
Awww...that's nice to hear about your doulas, it can always be really hard on the mother and the family if there is a stillbirth.
October is pregnancy and infant loss month and it’d be great if she would do a video about doulas and still births.
Why would you have a doula for abortions?? It's just a glob of cells and not a living baby right? If it is actually a baby, that would make it murder, right??
clmaynor I’m guessing because most late term abortions are of wanted pregnancies that went horribly wrong
clmaynor the baby I carried died in utero at 23 weeks pregnant. The process to artificially start labor to pass her body falls under the term abortion.
I wish that I'd known that you were here @ Mt. Auburn in Boston. I love the fact that there is some amazing art there. IMO it is also a collection of older graves that might replenish some of the most beautiful collections plants & trees.
Oh man, I would love to go to one of these. I actually have one friend that I think enjoys the macabre and what most people would find "morbid and weird" to be fascinating, if not beautiful. I've always kind of had an interest in death. I've been a long time horror fan, and especially but not exclusively the zombie genre. Then, in 2015 my dad passed away, and he was one of closest people in the world to me so, through my grief and pain, I have begun to have a very serene, peaceful, and fully embraced the reality of death and no longer am ashamed to make really off-the-cuff remarks that make some people uncomfortable (I actually find those moment funny), but I certainly do not fear death the way I used to. I fear suffering, but I do not fear the death itself. I would prefer if I knew it was coming and it wasn't a sudden death just so I could mentally prepare and say my last things to people, but I do not worry about it nearly as much. For me, I think my current attitude about death comes from two things: my faith, I am a Catholic Christian; and the death of my dad. The fullness of the Creed of Nicea of the Communion of Saints and that we are still connected to those gone before us, they are a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, praying for us, rooting for us to live our lives in accordance with God's will, which is love for God and love for others. I certainly still feel connected to Dad even after him being deceased for over three years now. I know he is dead corporeally, but behind the metaphysical veil that exists between us and the Communion of Saints, I know he is still with me and I have felt his presence. I realize this is anecdotal, and I am not trying to convince anyone to think or believe anything. I am simply being honest about my thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Take them for what you will.
Thank you to Caitlyn for doing what you do. I am so glad you do the job that you do and I am thankful for your informative and educational RUclips channel. Keep up the good work. I am one deathling who says you are awesome, doing a good job, and an inspiration to a lot of people. It makes me wonder how many of us would admit and be open about our fascination and interest with death (i.e. being a deathling) if you did not operate this RUclips channel? While I cannot speak for others, I would certainly strongly suspect that I would not be open about it. Any time you talk at all about death at all, let alone if you fixate on it or talk about aspects of it that are interesting, many people look at you with concern as if there is something wrong with you. There are definitely many things wrong with me. I have many faults. However, being a deathling is not one of them. If anything, it is an aspect of my personality that makes me grow and become stronger as a person.

I’m a big fan of the channel, and I finally thought of a question you haven’t addressed:
I’m interested in exploring my local cemeteries. But I’m feeling awkward about being in a place built for people to mourn and remember, when I personally have no one in the cemetery that I’m mourning or remembering. I’d love to hear some tips on how to visit a cemetery respectfully, and what I can do while there to make my trip meaningful and positive. Thanks!
Come to Detroit!!! & speaking of Detroit... can you make a video of the Cantrell Funeral home in Detroit? It closed down in April this year when reports of moldy bodies were being stored & just today they found remains of infants in the ceiling while construction crews were doing work in the building.

I have no need for this in my neighborhood thank you just the same. I'm not able to explain why I can't stop watching your channel, Ms Caitlin. I do have an unrelated (to the topic). How on earth did you even get interested in this industry? I mean. Your enthusiasm for the dead, death and dieing is contagious! I never feared death, but as many people in the world the subject line was taboo until I watched your speech at a ted thingy... I feel so much more comfortable with the thought now. I'm still uncomfortable, but the more I look at you, the intimidating the subject becomes.

Thank you for showing the inside of Mt. Auburn. I've lived in Cambridge, but never had a reason to go inside the cemetery, despite passing it daily on my way to work.
PS: wild turkeys are a fixture in the Kensington, CA cemetery. So I appreciated a mention.

If you ever do come to Sydney then you *have* to visit the cemetery at Lidcombe. It has a lovely historical section. You can get there via the train - the cemetery is literally across the road from the station. It's well worth a visit.
If you'd like to visit other historical graveyards in Sydney. Then the historic Camperdown graveyard is worth a vist. As are the many historical graveyards of Parramatta.

We used to live right across the street from the cemetery in Morningside, Edinburgh and so. many. weirdos. Wow. But walking through it was so peaceful despite the bustle of the city just metres away. A LOT of old graves too. We had a game, trying to find the oldest grave. 😊 Where we live now, it's tucked away just outside of town and the only people who go there are those with family buried there. This town is over 2000 years old (former Roman vicus ruins maybe 200m from our house?) but idk where the older graves/cemeteries are.

Two years after the fact, but I'm over in Gorham, and after ye old covid I definitely be interested in attending one in Maine.
My mother passed on in 2001. At the cemetary where she is buried, during the Holiday season, birds that are not turkeys, but are often on the kitchen table, are seen. Geese are spotted all over the place. It is a sight to behold! There are usually for or five walking together.
We need a death salon here in Las Vegas. This city is still reeling from the 1 October Shooting of 2017, and i think a death salon would be so helpful!!

I just attended a Death Cafe in Phoenix and spoke to the hosts, Alicia Coleman and Shirley Bosse, about how I've been wanting to put together a Death Salon at Arizona State University, and we all got very excited about the possibilities! I am a Physical Anthropology graduate and have multiple friends and colleagues in the death positive community that are very interested in attending and/or speaking. We also have more Deathlings than you could throw a turkey a turkey at! Living in AZ we have so many wonderful organizations, non-profits, professors, artists, and more that would make for an amazing Salon.
My issue is what should my next steps be to get this ball rolling? I've contacted through the website before without an answer, so phalanges crossed for this time!
We, the Down-Under Deathlings, eagerly await the "Death Salon Grand World Tour" which ideally will commence in Australia ;)

if we had a Death Salon here in Florida, and in Brevard County specifically, there's a few useful topics in addition to the standard ones.
* We have a lot of elderly people here, and that means that we have a lot of people who are guaranteed to be closer to death than birth. Some related topics could be how this affects a person psychologically and the sociology of funeral homes.
* People who were born here are only about 2% of the population. The vast majority of our residents moved here. For people who death is a family-related affair, how do you handle that geographical separation? How do you handle funeral transportation when people have moved so far to be here? How do you handle inter-state body transportation? These are all very important local topics.
* Since we're one of the frontlines for loosing our homeland due to climate change, how do we deal with the probable death of our community?
Thoughts anyone?

I kinda have a question and am unsure how to word it. I'd really like more death positive videos from people since it's unrealistic to expect you to make them all for everyone. I am working towards becoming a funeral director myself, and although I'm not quite there yet, do you think it'd be okay for those of us without credentials to make videos? I mostly want to talk about the philosophical aspects, or start a conversation for those who are mourning without getting into the legal stuff. Like, would this be okay or would you advise against it until I or anybody else has certs to really talk about it?

I was born and raised in Maine and lived two weeks out of every month in Boston during the nursing shortage. Mount Auburn Cemetery is indeed a beautiful place! Michael Dowling I know it's difficult but there is an ultimate Consciousness that will judge us all someday and is not up to us to judge anybody! We had a poor boy when I was teaching in Bangalore who was thrown into the Kenduskeag River and killed because he was gay now this was back in the 80s and things are better but they are not good enough! I used to live in Boston I was born and raised in Maine and I'm back in Portland for the next whatever amount of time. Until I can travel again. :-) I would love to be an advocate so if you would like to get in touch it would be nice to correspond with you.
This has inspired me to start a death cafe in my town actually! I live in lansing and I know there are deathlings here but no groups or get together - a death cafe is much needed!
Come to Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn! Its massive, breathtakingly beautiful, incredibly historically rich, and they already throw a bunch of really cool events there on the regular so I'm sure a Death Salon would fit in perfectly!
I'm in the burbs many miles south west of Boston and we get turkeys in the back yard quite often.
