I’ve made one of these for each of my grandchildren...based on their first year of life. I always use single crochet stitch and they turn out to be about twin bed size. I’ve got two in the works this year, one in pinks and yellows and one in blues and greens.

I started mine on my wedding day! So i record all the daily highs starting from the day I got married and it'll document our first year! Any big events or life changes (pregnancy/birth, moved, adopted a pet, birthdays, etc) will be stitched with the daily high but with a specific metallic thread! That way it's easily identified!

If you are doing a historic temperature blanket, it's much easier to figure out how much yarn of each color to use. Im doing one from the year I graduated highschool and I had excel make a histogram to figure out how many days would need each color. Excel is designed for this.
If you do not know how to do this, you can look up "how to make a histogram in excel" and you can find some tutorials.

Toni, I know this is the first time seeing this video and it is four years later. As I was watching this I had this idea for a temperature blanket by the month. I pictured your favorite granny square theme with the "magic circle" starting with the color of the gemstone four that month and then heading into the temperatures for that month. So you end up with 12 large granny squares. I have never attempted a temperature blanket, it was just an idea that popped into my head. Then the next one was doing a flower for each month, which is also done in a square pattern. As I am typing this more ideas are popping but I will stop with those two.

I crocheted ( almost finished) a corner to corner blanket in 2019 to commorate my granddaughter's high school graduation. I ran out of a certain yarn in late November and put the project away for December. I have it on my schedule to finish crocheting in February and weave in tails and do a label in March. I used the daily high temps for her home town. I used earth tones and greens. Since I started hers I have been day dreaming about one for her brother next year. Some ideas are: 1. crocheting individual squares or knitting individual diamonds for each day, 2. choosing a different stitch for each temperature range, 3. using a gradient of one color for the temperature ranges. I do know that if I do another one it will not be corner to corner. I got confused at least 3 times and had to rip out stitches and start again to get on pattern. I have really enjoyed your posts on this topic.

Im doing my first blanket this year, and I love using highs. In GA, lows happen early in the morning when I'm not even awake. The high comes at about 3-4pm. To decide, I suggest checking the highs, lows, and averages for about a week and seeing what the day /feels/ like. What temperature is a better representation of your day?
When it comes to falling behind, my advice is pick a pattern that makes it easy to catch up. I'm doing the linen granny square pattern this year, and missing a week is totally fine (especially early in the month). It only takes me about 45 minutes to catch up later in the month, which makes it so easy not to panic!

I took the plunge and ordered my yarn yesterday. I started recording the temps yesterday. I am going to make my temperatur blanket for our 15th year of marriage. So that's why my temps started yesterday, the day after our anniversary. Also, I am loosely using your tunisian temperature blanket as my guide. I love the look of it, but I'm not ready to do tunisian crochet, (only been crocheting for a few months and I'm finishing up my CAL from Crochet Academy). So I'm using Caron Simply Soft yarn in rich fall colors. I also ordered a Boye Resin Glitter Ergonomic Crochet hook just for this project. So anyway, I have decided to use the linen stitch instead of the tunisian simple stitch. And I haven't decided if I will do 2 or 3 rows per day since I'm using a worsted weight instead of DK. I hope my yarn gets here soon so I can start!!!!

Thank you Toni. Only 7-9 colours may be challenging as temperatures where I live range from -35C to +40C. That’s a 75 degree range. But I think using the highs or averages may help with this. Time to start planning for a 2022 temperature blanket.
I really enjoy your channel and I started following you on IG too.

I decided to wait until the end of the year to start mine. I kept track of the highs for each day on an excel spreadsheet, that way I knew how I would need to break down the range, and how much yarn I may need. I live in Ottawa, ON, so our temperatures can range anywhere from -40 to +40c, but 2019 was a lot more temperate. Also, I'm super indecisive about the colours, so there's that!

I recently discovered this site and having been learning some neat things about crochet. I learned to crochet a very long time ago. However, it wasn't till my body betrayed me android I could no longer work. So, I turned back to crochet to entertain myself, and keep my arthritic fingers moving. My family frowns when I purchase yarn, they say I have too much yarn I don't believe they're is such a thing. I did have too much scraps. I'd make them into small balls. It started when my daughter asked for a blanket. Grabbed my bag (a very large bag) of scraps and started. Now I didn't just make rows. I would use the yarn till I ran or and tied on a new color and kept going

KnitPicks & WeCrochet are currently having a big sale, with all weights of Brava (sport/worsted/chunky) 100% acrylic at $1.19/100g skein. (The Brava 500 skeins are also on sale.) At these prices, it's cheaper than Red Heart Super Saver!
When I need to get caught up on my monthly temperature pet blankets, I look up the daily high temperatures for that month on AccuWeather. (If I am caught up, I have MSN News as my home screen, and have 5 day's worth of weather forecast right there.)

I want to make one for each of my kids for the year (and city) they were born in. As long as I'm pulling up the historical data, I'm marking down the year of temperatures that my husband and I were born, too, all in a spreadsheet where I've colour-coded the temperatures so the whole spreadsheet acts like a giant multi-year "blanket", which gives me an idea of what it will look like, how many colours I will need (and how much of each), and I can play with the colour-scheme.

I have done one temp blanket for a previous year so I had all the temps ahead of time. I ended up having most of my color ranges about 7 degrees but one was 5 because here in OK we have A LOT of days in the 80-92 range and I wanted a little more change in color so I did 80-87, 88-92, and 93+. I still had a TON of that middle range but so much better than it could have been.
Next time I do one I would like to try highs and lows, maybe in a hex pattern. My first one was C2C highs only. I also might try dk instead of worsted, I have only just begun playing with different weights.

Mine would go from reds through to blue or white and back through to red. I'm in the southern hemisphere so it's the opposite to the ones I've seen on here from the northern Hemisphere. And I go in Celsius so it would be from -5 to about 50 degrees C range ( although I'm on 45 degrees C). Nice idea though and looking forward to starting it.

I'm a year behind the rest of you, and it's into April already. But I think I'll do a baseball blanket (the season started yesterday). It could be just two colors, 160 games (plus playoffs) in the year, and I can do two rows (or one tall row) per game. If my guys (Atlanta Braves) win, I'll use one color, use another color if the other team wins. To add more colors, I could choose a second set and use one set for in-division games, one for out-of-division games. And since I watch a lot of baseball, I can work on rows for the prior game while watching the current game.

You have probably advanced since you posted this, but I'd suggest making a temperature, or other kind of scarf and some beanies, etc. because they're great practice and then go for it with the blanket when you're happy with the evenness. *Or* go for it as a beginner and it might be cool to see how much you've grown and learned over a year in the blanket.

I wonder why she doesn’t use the weather service’s site. They actually provide downloadable spreadsheets. You just select your weather station (like, say, KLAX the one at Los Angeles Airport), then your date range and what values you want. They provide not only highs lows averages and precipitation but also wind, humidity, air pressure, visibility etc etc. Some stations have less and some may have more. The biggest thing for me was that I couldn’t find an option to download a list on WU but that was THE option on the Weather service site.

I feel so sad that so many of us (self included) feel the need to get rule validation for something with no rules, like "Does it have to be this year?" Like, of course not, it's not an assignment you're being graded on! There are no rules! But so many of us still feel like we need permission??

    • @TLYarnCrafts
      @TLYarnCrafts  9 месяцев назад

You can add me to that boat, too. I believe it's because many of us were introduced to this craft with rules/ instructions/ the "right" way to do things. But crochet is an art and we should feel empowered to learn through play and to put our own stamp on things. I hope, through videos like these, I can encourage people to make their own decisions when it comes to their crochet projects.
