I really am happy with my C70 purchase as from CVP's tests it appears to have more dynamic range. For me more dynamic range and smaller files are more important that triple ISO. I also prefer S35. The only reason why I have gotten full frame cameras is they tend to have better image quality. It's not the case this time though. I know the dynamic range difference is probably less than a stop, but for me the C70 struggles in high contrast situations, it gets noisy, the C400/C80 would be even worse. This is compared to an Alexa, which isn't fair but it is what it is.
That way I see it, C400 still is the better investment in my opinion. I upgraded my OG BMPCC to my C70 for filmmaking 5 months ago. Just finished my third film using the C70 and even though this C80 looks amazing, I love how the C70 has taught me alot more with storytelling.
Aside from all future considerations, what really matters is the final image quality. The C80 looks so much better than the FX6, not to mention its RF-friendly mount.🔥
Great intro to the C80. I'd be interested to see a comparison test with the FX6 but please use the same lenses on both cameras. A camera test that uses different lenses on each camera is a muddied test.
Canon has been coming in hot with their back to back cinema camera reveals. These are amazing cameras. But as a Sony shooter I'm looking forward to whats next from them. I hope they don't disappoint. An FX3 successor with the Internal ND's would be incredible. Maybe even an SDI out somewhere on that small body.
A full-frame C70 style camera is quite intriguing, but to be honest guys, I think Nikon is pretty much the only major camera company that is not handicapping its latest camera models. If you look at the Z6iii, Z8 and Z9, they all offer full frame internal compressed raw 6K or 8K up to 60fps, 4K up to 120 (it is a S35 crop but I think that is a limitation of keeping the tech at a reasonable price), no need for special batteries, and CF Express instead of SD card (really frustrating Canon stuck with SD cards for the C80, purposely handicapping it). And the 4K 120 is TRUE 120 fps, unlike most other cameras which force you to record 4K 120 in either 24, 30 or 60 fps playback and without audio (Canon also guilty of this). I can’t wait until Nikon/RED release a true cinema camera with all the same great features of the Z series along with hopefully internal NDs and a 3:2 sensor for anamorphic shooting.
I'm curious to see a detailed dynamic range test between the C70 and C80. Reportedly, the C70 had a slightly better dynamic range than the C400 because of its DGO sensor. If the C80 is the same, then I'd say that's a step back for Canon.
Step forward with the BSI sensor. 16stop, triple base ISO, Low Rolling Shutter, and best in class AF. DGO Full frame wouldn't give the extra benefits that BSI can.
less than 1/2 a stop difference, with more options. It's not a step back, but a FF DGO with either low rolling or a global shutter would be amazing, but that's not where Canon is headed right now. Thriple base ISO is a game changer for Canon and it currently out performs Sony putting both of their new c cams in direct compition for demand. Very happy about this direction because I work with Sony shooters all the time, and Canon finally has an answer.
@@barrygriffin5609the c70 wasn't 16 stops. It was infact 14. It combined two 12bit linear signals to one. The c80 seems to be a 14bit linear sensor so with a signal to noise ratio of 1 it's 13.5 stops. Remember: A/D bitdepth = a cap on dynamic range since the A/D cannot register values over it's numerical capacity
Just buy an older c70 for half the price and add a speed booster. You still get the amazing dgo sensor with all other main features of the c80 and you can buy lights and an amazing lens with the rest of the money. Even though, the tripple iso is a nice new feauture… just thinking is it worth the price?!
Hi Jake! Great review. Just wanted to check if CVP had any plans on looking at the Z6iii as it is a very interesting video camera? One of few that seems to have been completely missed by you guys. Thanks :)
While I am very happy that there is no IBIS on the C400, I do think that that would have been an interesting addition on the C70, adding versatility to its use as a B-cam. Still, what a win for Canon. They're on a roll and I'm happy to be heavily invested in the RF mount.
The spec sheet on canon’s website says that the C80 can output 6K60 raw over HDMI. I still would definitely rather have a CF express card slot but it’s nice that it can at least record 6k60 raw externally.
Awesome review as always!💥Could you compare this C89 to the R5C?! Which is what I own. Would love to know how the RAW results compare. Well the CLOG2 as well. Thanks 🙏
Everyone’s just waiting to see what Sony does before fully committing. These new crop of cameras will be the standard for the next 5 years at least. Also, I don’t know how you could justify a KX when the C80 exists. It would be a purely brand-based decision.
DGO Full Frame would have issues with bad rolling shutter as there is so much processing going to DGO. This BSI sensor is the best all round sensor they have made. 16stop, triple base ISO, Low Rolling Shutter, and best in class AF.
Nice new cam. I liked cam A, without any doubt. On a side note: Not sure if it’s possible, but it seems like your sound of your voice over/ talking head shots seem to be overly processed to (perhaps?) mitigate echo’s? It’s very noticeable, even on janky iPad speakers. It sounds very syllably and gated? 😅 Perhaps hang up/ lay down a couple of sound blankets? Just a bit of feedback, not trying to be a troll. 😊 love your work!
Great video once again. So did I get this right? 4k50 and 4k100 are only available in s35 crop mode? That would be a dealbreaker for me personaly, since i shot the vast majority of my projets in 4k50... But anyway, I am in the market for the R5II, since its a good upgrade for my R5 and I also do lots of photography work. Btw: the difference in contrast, colors and dynamic range between the fx6 and the C80 is not so critical in my opinion, that can be done in post mostly. BUT THE DIFFERENCE IN DETAIL?! WOW! The c80 certainly shines herre!
I wish Sony took their AX33 Camcorder and gave it the Full Frame Sensor that FX6 has. That would make it an incredibly versatile camera for a documentary filmmaker like me. I wish I could do it myself.
Conspiracy theory - Canon actually licenced the (patented) DGO tech from Arri when the midrange cinema market was slipping out from under them, meaning the margins on the C300 mark3 and the C70 were razor thin for Canon. Maybe it's not even financially viable for them to keep making DGO cameras, and maybe Arri has a stipulation about how high end those cameras can be (similar to how Zaxcom is willing to licence their onboard recording patent for consumer products, not professional stuff). In any case I don't understand why they don't make a full frame DGO sensor...
So this and the C400 have exactly the same sensor. Is it possible that the colours coming out of a camera don't just depend on the sensor but also some other variables? I much much prefer the footage from the C400 video. Every shot looks amazing to me, but I don't like the look of the colours on these shots. Is that just to do with the grading applied to the footage or is there some way in which the C80 and C400 might be producing different colours even though they have the same sensor? Thanks so much for any insight.
im personally so excited about this camera, it truly fits all my needs. I would only want to know why they did not continue with the DGO sensor, could there be a technical reason ? im yet to try out the new sensor butI really lovedthere DGO look.
Is there any reasoning as to why they don't offer a 10 bit 6k format? If the R5/c can do 10 bit 8k, why can't this and the c400 do 6k? More than simply being full frame, the 6k resolution is an appealing upgrade to me over the c70/c300iii. I'm happy to shoot in Canon RAW LT to get 6k, in fact I'd prefer it, but it's a big bummer they stuck to SD cards and limited it to 30p. It just seems like a frustrating limitation in the versatility of these new cameras. Too bad as the c400 is still a bit bigger of a body than I'd like (wish they could have made it the size of a Raptor) but the c80 seems just hindered enough to be all that enticing of an upgrade to the c70, while still being stuck with the quirky form factor.
Unfortunately, as in the case of the c70, I do not take this model into account due to the lack of a cfexpress slot. I still use c200 and I can't imagine recording in RAW format on SD cards
I've seen some great balance videos for the c400 on the rs4 pro gimbal, if you had to pick between the c400 and the c80 for more run and gun work - would you say the body made that much of a difference in terms of rigging for it?
I had the C70, couldn't stand the super 35 sensor or the softness of the image, and wound up selling it. This new release really checks a lot of boxes, and would make me much more likely to buy this camera. I have the R5C now, love it, but the battery life issue def gets in the way, and is a factor in when I decide to use it. This takes care of that, although the bigger form factor makes it a bit more of a challenge to put on a gimbal. Anyways, nice to see Canon making a camera that doesn't seem to have any big compromises in it at a decent price point. Also, canon color science is still better than Sony, you can still always tell Sony footage by the yellowish/milky tint in the skin tones.
@@noranoskyle4417 ok, so different people have different preferences, and needs. That C70 image way too soft for the corporate interviews I do. when I start shooting movies maybe I'll take another look at the C70.
Thanks for your very useful video. I noticed that the footage of the C80 can sometime haves the same pinky skin tones as the C70. Would you agree ? is it the same with the C400 ?
I love the positioning of the monitor on the c400, but this C80 (I'm a C70 owner) fits my needs better. Monitor so close to your chest hurt my neck, so I pre-ordered the C400 which is overkill in so many ways for my personal needs. Is there a way with the new SDI out to rig a monitor and use the autofocus with toch control like on the monitor that comes on the body?
@DerekYarra I know, but the camera is stuck at 6k30p. SD can handle 4k60p easily. They crippled the camera, so giving us a cf card won't solve anything.
The problem with the C80 and the C70 is that they use SD card still... It's quite annoying when you go to shoot 4k Raw and your SD corrupts or you've taken it out too early etc... I would buy the C80 over a RED or over a Sony any day of the week if only they included a Cfast card slot or a Card that can record faster than the standard SD cards that are on the market. This is coming from someone who has had extensive experience using a C70 and had to reshoot a whole day of work because the card corrupted.

I really liked the color science and the DR in the first test shots
Zamnnnn Canon said put some respect on my name lol.
After trying all kinds of cameras, I still prefer Blackmagic cameras. They may not have the best specs, but they’re the ones that inspire me to shoot.
@@barrygriffin5609 Yes; it was a positive trade off overall I believe.
less than 1/2 a stop difference, with more options.
Thanks for the review, this cam is fire!
Pro video camera without CFexpress? An interesting decision from which the restrictions on bitrates and the absence of 6k60 follow.
They always have to handicap something…so strange
That's what i thought too. Odd decision. No way to record to an ssd too. Just. Why?
The spec sheet on canon’s website says that the C80 can output 6K60 raw over HDMI. I still would definitely rather have a CF express card slot but it’s nice that it can at least record 6k60 raw externally.
@@justinhofstadler6398 An old historical precedent would be the lumix S1H ....
This is almost everything I’ve ever wanted in a cinema camera, yet, why don’t I really want it?
Marketing.
Awesome review as always!💥Could you compare this C89 to the R5C?! Which is what I own. Would love to know how the RAW results compare. Well the CLOG2 as well. Thanks 🙏
Please compare the regular version of Blackmagic FF and C80.
Every new camera release, I'm still confused why Canon abandoned the C100 II form factor.
I still have mine because it's such a joy to use, I really like the c70 but the ergonomics of the c100mkii are hard to beat
Everyone’s just waiting to see what Sony does before fully committing. These new crop of cameras will be the standard for the next 5 years at least. Also, I don’t know how you could justify a KX when the C80 exists. It would be a purely brand-based decision.
Still waiting for that DGO Full Frame.
DGO Full Frame would have issues with bad rolling shutter as there is so much processing going to DGO. This BSI sensor is the best all round sensor they have made. 16stop, triple base ISO, Low Rolling Shutter, and best in class AF.
the C500 miii
I am pretty sure that this FF sensors has also less Dynamic Range then the previous one in the C70
@@barrygriffin5609 processing continues to become better each year, so I’m not worried by the time it comes out.
@@Alexiuside that would be awesome!
Hopefully this influences Sony to include internal NDs in the FX4.
This is absolutely brilliant..
I suspect the C80 will be very popular with event shooting with that triple base ISO and 24-105 f/2.8
Finally, upgrade time
Are you upgrading from C70? Jake
@@CVPTV No, from the R5c
I'm curious if an atomos will add recording modes. This camera is the next workhorse.
Coming from Sony... this is a wow! Tempted to switch!
Do you think it’s worth getting over a fx6? That’s what I’m torn about
Nice new cam.
Canon has won at this point 🎉😂
Would love to see the comparison with the EOS R1 which is photo first but pretty solid on video too!
Anyone keep hearing C A T the whole video?? Gave me a laugh! Great video as always!
I wish Sony took their AX33 Camcorder and gave it the Full Frame Sensor that FX6 has. That would make it an incredibly versatile camera for a documentary filmmaker like me. I wish I could do it myself.
Best ad ever :D
cmat cameo on cvp goes crazy
Would love to see C80 vs fx6 vs Vraptor X vs Burano
vs BM 6K FF (Pyxis)
@@phrasalsyntax ya that too
Bird eyes AF? Then I’m sold. ❤
Thanks so much for any insight.
would love to see a comparison to the canon r1 !
That VAT is ridiculous.
im personally so excited about this camera, it truly fits all my needs. I would only want to know why they did not continue with the DGO sensor, could there be a technical reason ? im yet to try out the new sensor butI really lovedthere DGO look.
What size ThinkTank rain cover did you use on the C80, small or large?
I’ve been waiting two years!
I actually preferred the footage from C80 over FX6.
Great camera. Weird recording media decision.
Clearly B is the go… its a very obvious difference
I am glad i waited!
If the c80had open gate ,6k60 and cfxpress cards it would be the perfect camera for me
I’m not sure why all the major manufactures aren’t all including open gate. It’s probably still a few years away.
We need a CVP USA.
No excuse for them to have not put a CF express type B in it
I still think I'm gonna pick up the fx3... Though I hope with this camera it forces Sony to update their fx3.
Also, canon color science is still better than Sony, you can still always tell Sony footage by the yellowish/milky tint in the skin tones.
lol soft images are ideal for shooting movies. There is a reason why cinema cameras are soft.
Between R5 2 and C80, which one is better ?
I prefer smaller cameras like the A9iii at this point, easier to keep on a gimbal and get the shot. Sold our Reds.
Wow…could this be the perfect canon cinema camera? Could you compare the OG Komodo to it?
Wow , didn't expect this
I love the positioning of the monitor on the c400, but this C80 (I'm a C70 owner) fits my needs better. Monitor so close to your chest hurt my neck, so I pre-ordered the C400 which is overkill in so many ways for my personal needs. Is there a way with the new SDI out to rig a monitor and use the autofocus with toch control like on the monitor that comes on the body?
I guess this is canons answer to the Fx3 and FX6 from Sony
For the Card, Dual CF would have been my preference or one CF one SD
Why do you need CF. It adds nothing except cost.
@@nigerian-nightmare to allow access to better codecs at higher frame rates.
@DerekYarra I know, but the camera is stuck at 6k30p. SD can handle 4k60p easily. They crippled the camera, so giving us a cf card won't solve anything.
Faster transfer from sd to pc would be so nice. Always those fiddely shitty sd cards. I hate them.
@@nigerian-nightmare Right, but given that the R5 can record 8k raw internally, media is likely the reason for the cripple.
How are the read speeds? Not sure if I missed that part. Should have less rolling shutter than the c70 right?
Super35 crop mode isn't as good because you have fewer autofocus points. It's useful, would rather have it than not.
