🇦🇺🤦♂️ as a Porsche certification accident repairer... you can see the simple difference between the quality of a 991 and 992... just take a door trim off of both... closely inspect both, front and back... tap and touch the plastics, check the handle, construction of all.... that will give you outcome of most the car, except the weight reduction of structural design, metals and more power... for me as an everyday and Porsche expert... the 991 will be the last Porsche of the highest quality, no corners cut for factory profit... such is last good BMW was 2008 and Mercedes 2018 for customer value
Sorry Al. But every time someone says its Not about money. Its always about MONEY!!! I hear that from my Honda Civic friends, why pay that? Why??? Because its a Porsche 911 922 Carrera S. PERIOD !!!!
Have to agree with you.Ive been thinking recently of changing my 991.2 gts for 992 gts but the difference is around 45 k and as you say I cant see a 992 giving that much more enjoyment than my current car.
I have a 992, it’s an incredible machine. I get what you’re saying about value and enjoying working on you own car. Which is why I also have a 993 and a Carrera 3.2, they keep the diy in me happy.
I agree with you on all accounts. Financially today, it may not make sense. But these current 992 prices, make our older models more attractive and valuable.
I had a 981 base. Sold it. Then had a 992 S on order, realized I wasnt willing to waste a second summer waiting to drive it, and then realized that i wasnt waiting to drive the S, what I actually wanted was a cayman with more power...and finally realized that a GT4 was much more what I actually wanted. It wasnt a price motivated thing, it was a driving experience thing. Full circle.
New Porsche owners buy what they want with the money they made. Porsche are passion purchases, not family hatchbacks and value for money DIY maintenance and repairs and practicality are irrelevant.
Agree. I drive a 997.2 C2S and find it’s ideal for the UK roads we now drive on (don’t do track days). More than enough performance plus it’s relatively small size and manoeuvrability makes it easy to place / park / avoid potholes etc. Nothing against the 992 but it is now a big, wide car. More than happy to continue to enjoy my 997
Totally with you. I bought my 981 Cayman S for £38k 2yrs ago. My brother bought a 718 GT4 for £90k. While his is an amazing car, my 981 Cayman S feels like 90% of the same experience for more than half the money. Perfect price point for the experience in my view.
I would rather spend less money and go older rather than newer. I prefer the non interrupted pure driving rather than computer controlled, plus older porsches won't devalue as long as maintenance is maintained.
I agree with your likes about the feel of a Porsche 911, I bought a 997.2 convertible 6speeds a year ago. My previous was a 1995 Carrera Coupe 6 speeds. Graduation of the best air cooled 993. 24 year ownership until got totaled by driver burning red light. Shopped the 992, didn’t feel at home. Rather have what I bought, a 3.8 liter naturally aspirated. Sounds and feels great
The 997 was manufactured between 2004 and 2012. Therefore a car from that series is at least 11 years old. If you look for a new Porsche then you normally don´t do this because you want more fun but because your "old" car has to be replaced after some time. If you just compare "fun" of course you´re right not to buy a new one. If you think about maintenance and the risk of bigger invoices for an older car, you have to replace it, very easy!
You “nailed” the dilemma - do I sell/trade my ‘90 Porsche 964 and upgrade to a recent 911 model (with CarPlay) or leave well enough alone? I’ve driven Porsche 911’s since my first ‘69 - 911T (5 - 911’s in all). I resent the fact that I entered the Porsche family of owners for about $5,000, and now would need to spend well over $100,000. The maximum speed I can legally drive in my home state of Montana is 80mph. All of five Porsche 911 models I’ve owned turned heads. “There is no other” reasonable consideration - if it works, why replace it, if it’s not broke, don’t fix it.
Started my Porsche journey with a 964 C4, now on a 991.1 which I love, however the best car of all time was the 964, its special and one that I regret selling . keep it !
Umm…I’ve got the 992. Really, other than the wide body and styling I would say the 991.2 is a much better choice right now. The electronics are a bit wonky, buttons feel cheap, too much plastic, and values slightly elevated. The price will drop for sure, they always do, but the cheap bits will stay the same. You can pick up a 991.2 several models up for the same price. I’m happy though but I was just filling a want, not a value proposition.
I can totally understand from your perspective, already owning a 997. But for me, coming from Corvette world and never owning a Porsche before, I am seriously considering the 992 as a great entry point. And then hopefully I can make this same video 10 years from now. 👍🏻
Totally agree with you Al, I bought my 997 3 years ago and am totally in love with it.. I originally wanted a 991 but couldn't really stretch my budget and now I'm just glad I didn't go there. I will keep her forever.. oh and 997's look the best as well imo ... Cheers for all the vids mate you helped me take the plunge into owning one of these beauties!!😊
I got news. The 992's, unless you have a base model with PDK, are not depreciating. Even 1-2 year old models with salvage titles (i.e., in a major wreck) are going for above original price. It's insane.
I have to agree, 817, 981, 991.2 etc fantastic cars, 992 - love it, my first 911 and about to order my next. Let's just face it, what ever your budget, great cars.
It’s out of my league so it’s really irrelevant. I have my 997 and I love it. Could it use more power, sure. Do I wish I didn’t have to worry about bore scoring, sure. But this one is mine, and I love it. I think if I were to upgrade to anything I’d be eyeing a 981 GT4.
GT4’s do represent good value i reckon, but I think I’d only have one if I was able to do more track days sadly I just don’t get the time. Great cars but until then we can enjoy our 997’s 👍👍 thanks for watching
@@alsatch_ I live 20 minutes from COTA and I have the time. It would be awesome!! Had my 997 on there a few weeks back for a few parade laps and it gave me the itch to go for the full weekend.
If you’re happy with what you have, why buy ANYTHING else ? But if you don’t have a 911, don’t want to buy someone else’s 911, then…..ah…..hell yes buy a 992 911. Want a Cayman, buy a Cayman. Be just a bit honest about it…….ie, “I wouldn’t buy a 992 BECAUSE my money is tied up in a 991.” And you’re absolutely correct when you suggest the 992 is a phenomenal car, because it is…….I just pulled mine into the garage for the night….!
I have a 987.2 cayman, 987.2 boxster spyder and a macan. Love them all. Pure excitement driving all 3. Maybe 1 day I will get a 911 but for now I’m happy with what I have
I don't like the back of the 992. And I am working hard to get myself into a 996/997. That would be lovely. I also like the 991 but they are quite a bit more expensive and large. BTW, your yellow 997 looks great!
Simple answer is, I agree. I've got a 987.2 BoxsterSpyder and a modded '84 carrera, both of which make me grin from ear to ear. No point for me to upgrade when I am beyond happy. That said, there are plenty of people out there who are happy to pay the ever escalating price for a new Porsche, particularly the 911. Here in the US, Porsche keeps bumping the base price by 10% at a go and are still selling all they make. So, the market is lapping it up. I'll sit tight and just enjoy myself and know that my cars are holding their value (or increasing) under the umbrella of new car increases.
Totally agree with your point. I was fortunate enough to buy a Porsche 981 GTS in 2015 at an excellent price. It has only 8,000 miles but I bought it for 28% under the original window sticker that was kept. Now 8 years later, the car is still in mind condition and I just do not see the point to sell it for buying something new. As the car get's older, the driving pleasure and condition stays the same (I only use it for weekend) and with increased age the car becomes a tiny bit more of a modern classic without loss of joy, performance or pleasure.
You are spot on!!! I got my 981 Cayman S in 2018, and I was even debating back then about whether the 981 was ~$15k better than a 987. For me, it kind of was. I like the styling and the interior a LOT more than a 987 (still a great car!). I can't personally justify even a new 982, never mind a 992, mostly because of the immediate depreciation. I have no intention of selling my Cayman anytime soon (friggin' bury me in the thing), and I've "benefitted" from the boom in the used car market from the pandemic, in that I could probably sell it for more than I paid for it, even with putting 38k miles on it. The 992s are all gorgeous, but I'm trying to figure out a retirement strategy, and I just can't justify 60 to 70k or more that I'd need to step up. That'll never get past the ways and means committee chairman (wife). ;-)
My 997.1 c2s is worth about 25k, so it's a big jump to anything else. I quite like that is not too quick. Would be nice to have some modern comforts (decent phone, speed limiter, parking sensors etc) but can't see me changing. Bore score does worry me a bit tho clearly 10k would sort that out.
I bought my 981 5 years ago, was thinking about getting a 991.2 or 992. I did the same analysis you did before looking at your video, which is a great video by the way, came to the same conclusion. My Cayman checks off all the boxes 🏎
It’s like an iPhone. Newer versions don’t add more functionality, they only cost a lot of money. I’m driving a 2013 Porsche Boxster (981) PDK, sport exhaust, and I dare say that this is the finest Porsche of all the 911’s I owned (964RS, 996 Targa, 996 4S) The difference in driveability, functionality, practicality and sound compared to the 718 isn’t worth the money.
It’s because the base versions of caymans and 911 share about 90-95% of the experience as the higher level cars for a street driven car. I listen to a 200k gt4 RS on RUclips and it only reminds me of my 981 base with a modded exhaust similar to carnewal GT. Is it the same, no but it’s close enough not to spend more than 4 times as much for 10% more experience on a road. Track is a completely different argument.
I agree with you. I have a 991.2 C2s and love the car. It is enough for me. There is always more, better, faster, but my 991.2 still ticks all the boxes so paying the price to trade for a 992 makes no sense to me. My current plan is to keep the 991.2 for a long time.
I’ve been a Porsche lover since November 1975 when I bought my first Porsche a 1976 2,7 at the Earls Court motor show from a super gentleman called John Hodge working at the time at AFN Porsche. That started my love affair with the German brand and in fact my wife tells me that she thinks that I suffer from Porscheitis!!!! What’s more I am Italian so, after this reply I will be waiting for my excommunication papers 😂. I currently own 4 Porsches. Two of them are in surgery because I restore them myself, together with my son, engine, gearbox, bodywork, suspensions, electrics, the lot! And sourcing all the little known parts that you thought never existed is half the fun. The cars I’m restoring are a 1976 Carrera 3,0 and a 1980 3,0 SC. I also own a 2002 996 turbo and a 2017 Cayenne that the wife drives. Buying new Porsches requires a lot of money and for those who have it, great! They are fantastic cars! Me? Give me an air cooled classic any day and in 10 years time their value will be three times as much as a new one so I completely understand what you are saying. But hey, the manufacturers have to keep on producing so as long as there are people around with a lot of money, they will keep on selling their new cars. Keep your 997. Its one of the best Porsches ever made. I’ll soon be starting a 911 R replica using an old 912 chassis, short wheel base and all. Something new to feed my Porscheitis. By the way my 996 turbo is exactly the same colour as your 997, speed yellow. Great video thank u.
I've had a 987, and a 718. I've spent my adult years looking after a kid and parents. Blew an investment on a 992. I'm pathetic, old and shallow, I know, but I've never had so much fun with my clothes on ❤
Globally they sell tons of them. Probably 2-3x more each year than all Cayman's and Boxster's put together. I wonder how many sell to sports car enthusiasts, and how many sell to those who just want a luxury car with a nice brand name? There's a large enough market of buyers whom 100k is nothing and Porsche will sell them all day long.
I am so totally happy with my 981 GTS - it is nimble and huge fun to drive. I think that the 992 is becoming too large to feel like. True sports car should. In some markets it may work but on our narrow twisty roads it would be more of a hassle than the 981 Cayman. I will have the Cayman for life, of that I am quite sure.
When you own the perfect sports car, there’s no need to look elsewhere. I have a base 981 with Sport Chrono, and after driving hundreds of cars over the years, the only sports car that’s delivered the same feeling is the original NSX. It took me three goes to find the perfect wife, too - my shopping days are over.
Agree with the logic , of course , with nice deep pockets or if I won the lotto it would be the latest and greatest , he’ll why not. In the meantime I’ll enjoy my Cayman it’s still a stunning car.
I've had a 997 with a 4.0L bore and I currently have a 991.2 base with bolt ons and gts turbos with a tune making about 600hp. I prefer the design of the 991 the most and the power, but the 997 was a better driver's car. I think both are better than the 992 subjectively... but only by a small margin. Objectively the 992 is phenomenal...when prices come down... maybe. For me, I still yearn for a 991 turbo, targa, or gt3. So one of those may come before I get a 992... by then...992 used prices will be more palatable too.
I agree I had the Porsche 992 , I had the sunglasses the sunny Sunday drive ,the you tube camera set up in the car ,driving round talking to myself all day long in an Alan partridge style ,but something was 😢 missing, I longed for the day of driving round in my old dacha Sandero without all the glasses ,camera and sunshine and better fuel economy to boot
GT3 double the money of an S model, sure they are phenomenal cars. Good on the people that do have them I say but they are just too far out of my league 😅 thanks for watching 👍
@@alsatch_ Yeah, they’re not cheap. Love your cars and the content. Keep it coming. I had the 992 S and felt it was not raw enough for a 911. Had a manual 992 GTS after that which was better but most recently got a GT3 Touring manual car which is amazing. Yes, more expensive to buy but also holds its value pretty well or appreciates in value so total cost of ownership can work out better.
I've thought about it on & off for a while, moving from a 997 turbo, but in the end, I love the car & the way it drives. At best, I could maybe see a move to a 991 gt3, but doubt even that will happen. Bigger car, more expensive to run & horrible interior.
When I bought my Cayman 981 S I thought I would probably yearn for a 911 within a couple of years. 4 years later and still happy with the 981. Mainly for the reason that it’s not my daily and it’s paid for. So, if I don’t use it for a few weeks, it doesn’t matter. Helps it holds its money too. I also find the 992 too big. If I changed it to a 911 it would be a 991.1 but I have no wish to change. The 981 gives me 90% or more of the fun and isn’t costing me much. A Spyder would be great if finances ever allows it comfortably. But I definitely couldn’t justify the extra money on a 992. Great video 👍
My 982 4.0 is the best and most balanced sports car I've ever driven. It is the right size and weight with NA motor that sings while banging through all 6 gears. If it had a manual hand brake it would have been a 10 out of 10. Almost perfect
By the way, if anyone knows whether Mr John Hodge previously of AFN Porsche Islworth, London, from whom I bought my first Porsche, is still with us (he should be around 76/77 years old I think) and knows his contact details, I would like to catch up with him. Thank you
Please Don’t rely on me for financial advice but I would put my money into a well sorted 997, however that budget will also get you into a 991 which is a little more modern. Good luck 🤞
@@alsatch_ Hard to keep up with all the cars you have had. That was the car that got me in to watching your videos. As a 987 owner you have saved me cash over the years so thank you very much.
@@alsatch_ They are but the build quality of the 987.1 is rubbish which is not helping my wallet. Just about to make changes to the shifter to make it feel more like a GT3 and with the KWs just fitted as well it will be hard to beat it for driving.
Totally agree with you. For the average earner a 992 is unaffordable but looking at an older Porsche, I have a Cayman 2.9 09 plate, you get all the fun and quality of a great car. Getting the right one in the first instance is the key, a good history and documents to prove it help in having a car that is reliable and not too costly to run.
Great video and I completely agree, for the price of a 992 I don’t think it would give anymore enjoyment over and above your 997 other than just being a newer car. 👍😊
Totally agree. Did a Porsche Drive Experience day in late 2022 which provided the opportunity to drive the latest Boxster, Cayman, 911, Taycan and Macan back-to-back on the track, skid pan and in a motorkhana competition. Times were no quicker in the 911 for average enthusiasts like myself (the majority) and the fun factor was no greater than my 981 Boxster provides. When money matters, I don’t see the value proposition of the latest models compared to the 981. And with the next model being an EV there is even more incentive to hang on to the NA 6 MT.
.....992 with turbo....👎 992 is NOT a keeper....had a red 80 911 Targa & now 2006 Cayman S. Am a true old enthusiast, addicted.... 992?...dont think so. 💸🤣🥳
There’s just something about old Porsches isn’t there. I do like the 992’s, but I’m just not that bothered about going for one, they don’t excite me enough (unless it was a gt3 touring which is way outa my league) Thanks for watching 👍👍
Agree. I think (but not 100% sure) that covid has kept the prices high, I would have expected them to have dropped more by now but nope 🫣 thanks for watching 👍
I couldn’t agree more, Al. Especially in Australia, where a new base 992 is $315,000! I’ve only driven the S ($350k), and there’s no way it’s $270,000 better than my 981 Boxster. I also drove a new AM Vantage recently, and it left me feeling completely underwhelmed. The 981 twins are just brilliant. And incredible value for money.

I've had a 99 7.2 Turbo S and I have a 992 GT3 there's about $150,000 difference in the price both cars are enjoyable the GT3 is art in-motion😊😊😊😊😊😊
I really can’t agree more. I enjoy my Panamera GTS because it gives me all the enjoyment I need.
Agree with the logic , of course , with nice deep pockets or if I won the lotto it would be the latest and
greatest , he’ll why not. In the meantime I’ll enjoy my Cayman it’s still a stunning car.
Thanks mate! Yup we just need to enjoy what we have. 👍
Which model is at 1:36 with that duckbill? I thought it was only the sport classic that got that.
It’s most likely an aftermarket part. I don’t have much info on it, just stumbled across it online & thought it looked good 👍
Not all 992 are created equal. The GT cars are very special in my opinion, especially if you like the sound of a NA engine.
@@seanmurphy9114congrats on the gt3 touring. My ultimate dream car. You have great taste. Bravo 👏
Manual changes everything. I’ve never personally driven the 982 4.0 but I’d expect it to be as good as you say 👍👍
By the way, if anyone knows whether Mr John Hodge previously of AFN Porsche Islworth, London, from whom I bought my first Porsche, is still with us (he should be around 76/77 years old I think) and knows his contact details, I would like to catch up with him. Thank you
Fun beats ego. I’d love someone to interview some of the top motor journalists on what they saw as the best driving cars they’d own, or do own.
If you had 50k to spend which 911 would you by, looking for a investment I can enjoy??
Thanks in advance
Please Don’t rely on me for financial advice but I would put my money into a well sorted 997, however that budget will also get you into a 991 which is a little more modern. Good luck 🤞
What ever happened to the 987 Cayman you had?
Ah I sold that a couple of years ago.
@@alsatch_ Hard to keep up with all the cars you have had. That was the car that got me in to watching your videos. As a 987 owner you have saved me cash over the years so thank you very much.
@@batlamb5386great to hear mate. They are super little cars. I do miss mine as it was a manual (current cayman is a PDK) thanks for watching 👍
718 GT4 - £80k, modern and value 😮
They are great value to be fair 👍
718 4.0 GTS, better everyday car imho
@@stevecade857 😂😂
He said it's the high price.
I love my old cayman s.
You are 100% correct on your decision - Unless your so loaded and the monthly’s don’t matter.
.....992 with turbo....👎 992 is NOT a keeper....had a red 80 911 Targa & now 2006 Cayman S. Am a true old enthusiast, addicted....
992?...dont think so.
💸🤣🥳
There’s just something about old Porsches isn’t there. I do like the 992’s, but I’m just not that bothered about going for one, they don’t excite me enough (unless it was a gt3 touring which is way outa my league)
Thanks for watching 👍👍
Price doesnt match what U get for a "normal" 992. I wish.
Agreed. 992s are great. But my normally aspirated 991.1 GTS is better for me.
Stupidly overpriced cars
Very weak content. Not impressed
Glad to hear you enjoyed it
Another cracking vid!
Great cars but been overpriced for a long time.
Agree. I think (but not 100% sure) that covid has kept the prices high, I would have expected them to have dropped more by now but nope 🫣 thanks for watching 👍
I will never buy any Porsche reason: Too overpriced.
I hear you bro! The 987 & 981 are just tremendous value for money. 🙌
SATCH how to I install camera or sensors on my 2013 4s ? Is it worth it ? what is the best solution ... thanks
There will be kits out there to do that. A specialist can do it for you but I guess there will probably be some guides on RUclips?
