It's a nice thought but with DS lite prices on Amazon Japan starting under $50 and a little extra for special game hardware to make it go, kinda tough to compete on price.
I find lots of people's reactions go ham from reviews. It's a great device. Just compared buttons to my regular SP and I way prefer the buttons and dpad on the anbernic device.
I personally don't hate the buttons. They do have a bit more travel than the og SP buttons and it does require a little bit more force to push down but I'm good with it. I do wish that all the buttons (including the dpad) were a bit quieter. The only thing that I wish did make a click sound was the hinge when the screen is at a 120 degree angle, mine doesn't click. I didn't have an og SP growing up, I missed out. I think most of the people that are complaining about the Anbernic SP buttons and dpad grew up with the og SP and are very picky and wanted them to be more like the og SP dpad and buttons which is fine but it is what it is. But, I definitely would not play this device in bed or in the bedroom while my partner was sleeping
when looking at Joey's testing, seems like handhelds are quiet and console controllers are more clicky. I would guess handhelds are designed to be quiet because Nintendo was expecting a DS or SP to be used by kids, and parents get annoyed by constant clicky button sounds. I prefer a click for response, like arcade machines, it helps me stay quick
I agree about the sleep mode being a big factor of having a clamshell console. I've decided I'd rather keep it on sleep even with the battery loss. I just like closing it quickly to do something and then open it back up later. If I know I won't be using it for awhile, I'll shut it down with the power button.
MuOS got its update recently and it's a game-changer. After a few minutes, it'll auto power off and leave a save. This means if you set it to auto-run the previously played game it'll boot directly into your save state and you are exactly where you were. This only works if the emulator supports auto-save so ports just keep playing when closed and drastic isn't as easy as PSX or GBA for example, but I hope that is figured out.
Your review came just in time to validate my late-night impulse purchase! Looking forward to completing loads of games on this thing! Going to start by installing muOS, then perhaps eventually switch over to GarlicOS once 2.0 is in a complete state :)
I bought a second sp thinking i got lucky as the buttons were in no way fatiguing either. I have a transparent and solid and both are very easy to press so i was confused about all the comments regarding this. I am also aware that I'm a 30 year old male so maybe for some people it is actually tiring but I've been playing hours on these daily and havent had any cramps or issues at all. Love the review, thanks Joey!
I never realised the SP had such a small screen, always remembered it being bigger, plus it'll be a good wait to see if we see any reddit images of cracked hinges show up
Great review. I've found the buttons to be an non issue too. Also, I've heard you feel the warmth more on the transparent models, at least according to Takis video. I personally haven't really felt like my SP gets warm, and I have the silver. I've mostly been playing GBA, so idkno. Keep up the good work

I want them to make more colors. I want the solid red like your GBA and a transparent purple but more purple than they usually do. More towards miyoos purple

I got the blue 1 for my brother and the silver for me. I used to have a original sp and love it. We are using it mostly for 8bit,16bit,ps1 and some psp/n64 games. The buttons are ok. This and my miyoo mini plus are my go to for retro gaming. For dreamcast,GameCube and some ps2 my retroid pocket 2s.
This thing's really good so far! I just need replacement shells in the original colors and the etsy sellers to give up some recut original style back and logo stickers. The accessorizing potential is gonna be great
I kinda wish they had used the 1:1 screen from the RGCube in this. Would have been 3x scaling for GBA and also would be perfect for GB and GBC. I look at my RGB20SX and my RG35xxSP doesnt look nearly as good while playing these games. You can try and blur the image with upscaling but it just isnt the same as pixel perfect emulation like the 1:1 screens do for GBA. I really want to like the RG35XXSP but I am kinda on the fence of selling it. I used to think 4:3 screens where the bees knees for emulation but not so much anymore. Ill watch and see what you think about this or if you touch on how the image looks off for GBA content.
Yeah, since it's GBA SP form factor and was backwards compatible, a 1:1 screen would make more sense for GB/GBC with a special horizontal bezel for GBA. I'm glad people like the current version but I can wait for the a possible revised RG35xx SP Plus.
I totally agree with everything you said in this review. The only thing That's going on with me is that for some reason the closing feature won't work right on my device. I don't know if it's a software Issue or a hardware issue but I can't get The screen to shut off when I close the lid Even when I'm not in the game
MuOS beans made this device perfect sure it doesn't have screen sleep but that's fine. MuOS base shaders applied appear invisible as if nothing is on. It's so great
Awesome review i’ll most likely be picking this up, was originally looking forward to the Miyoo Flip but after the disastrous A30 i’ll be picking this one up instead, also I disagree with wanting it to be android over Linux i’m sure custom software will fix the sleep issues later on.
i really wanted to love playing gba on this thing but i've found myself not enjoying it due to the non-integer scaling not to mention not having a proper sleep function
Personally speaking after using the SP since it came out, I do find the Dpad to be noticeably fatiguing to use for long periods though it definitely is precise. Everything else is fine, I don't find the other buttons to be particularly loud. The Dpad however is much better than the vertical 35xx and plus version which I both found to be feeling mushy and unresponsive. I couldn't stand how it felt and sold it off.
😂 bro had me dying with that button noise comparison Seems like the common sentiment online is that every press has the decibels of either a sonic boom or a million exploding suns
Just a couple things I did to fix the 64gig issue and frame pacing with no shaders. First I am using a 128gig sandisk. I used my partition software to partition the unused partition to fat32 and then moved my roms folder to it. Then when you load it into the sp the system will install the rest of the files to that partition. For the frame pacing it's stupid but if you close the lid and let it go dark then open it the pacing is fixed for every console. I saw it work several times with Snes and Genesis so just figured it works for all games. Only issue is you have to do this everytime you turn off and on the system. Cheers.
Hey! We were born in the same year!... Thought you might like it! I wish RP would see this device and make another Flip... Maybe a DS version with the D1200 or Snapdragon chip in the Odin 2.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Right?!? I like the SP a lot, but I found it making me want to play with the RP Flip some more... I had to send it in because the dpad broke and same with a macro button, so I am waiting to get it back.
Interesting to see the original SP compared to the RG35xx SP rather than an AGS-101. Would be kind of neat to do a comparison of all the versions from the OG non back lit GBA, to the fan afterburner kit, first SP, AGS-101, micro, DS phat, DS Lite and then the latest LCD kits. Also, wish a GBA emulator would strip out the midi files and replay them as higher quality yamaha XG samples. It's not an apples to apples comparison but similar in spirit to fan restorations using original midi hardware with higher quality samples along with MSU-1 streaming. I could do with less bacon sizzle in my GBA soundtracks.
Great video. I have had all of them since the OG GB when I was 18. I must be getting old....I have my old systems and I have retro systems...the latest the RGB30. I do NOT understand the obsession with button sound. I'm assuming it's from people used to the non sounds of touch screens. But I really don't get it at all. When I was a teen and our Mattel Football games made too much noise we just taped cardboard over the speaker. Wanna talk about loud buttons??? Those things sounded like machine guns. I don't get it. LoL. I always loved the GBA SP (sold my GBA to get one and never ever regretted that) and have 3 originals and just one with the "extra bright" back light. One of the best designs ever. I like this new on just for the fact it's new. LoL. Enjoyed the video though ...you got the best color...❤

The lids sleep feature is not really an issue for me because at least with the gba emulator you just have to tap the power button and it basically creates a save State and shuts off and then when you turn the system back on it loads right into the game where you left off without even showing the front end.
