  • Join Joey Coconato and I on a 3 day backpacking trip in Washington States Olympic National Park. This is the first trip here for both of us. We hike the Hoh River Trail through lush rainforest making base camp at Lewis Meadows. We then slack pack climbing over 3,700ft to the amazing Blue Glacier on day 2. Olympic National Park is very diverse with a little bit of everything. I look forward to going back and exploring more. A huge thank you to Joey for all of the incredible additional footage. Please visit Joey's channel at the link below. His work is amazing...

    I was up there last year the first week of sept right after Labor Day with my dad. It was our last ‘camping’ trip together. He was the one who taught me to love camping and hiking and took me on my only backpacking trip up mt St. Helens. We had had a very miserable trip in the Olympic rain forest when I was little so I decided to take him up there shortly before he died and we stayed at the camping cabins at crescent lake. We drove around the park and took short walks here and there and reminisced about other camping trips and the our crazy camping trip during the worst rain year in WA history up to that time. Lol. We had deer come to our cabin every morning. It was so amazing. Love the Olympic national park. Really want to return. Thanks for your posts. So beautiful!

    I retired to the Olympic peninsula in 1998. I took several trips in our RV camping at the Hoh base. We took day hikes but not being back packers never made it to the glacier. It is now 2022 and you took me there at 7777 Thank you. You caught the essence of the Hoh . Magnificent. Thanks

    Beautiful area. We hope to make it there someday. As far as your trip/fall, I don't know if anyone else mentioned this but one of the reasons I wear gaiters (besides keeping rocks and twigs out of my shoes) is that you normally keep your shoelaces stuffed up under the gaiters so that the laces don't catch on something to give you a tumble as you experienced. Of course, the trekking poles help even more if you aren't using them in selfie mode (ouch!).

    • @CatherineGregoryAdventures
      @CatherineGregoryAdventures  5 лет назад

      I hadn’t thought about the gators helping. I would have never imagine taking that kind of a fall due to my shoelace lol. Thank you.

    I've done a lot of walking, hiking, and climbing in my day. Early in my hiking career, I was given some advice about dangling shoe strings. When I tie them, I leave only enough loop (double knot) to get my finger through. Then all the rest of the two loose ends get tucked down into my shoe on the inside, making sure they're both secure down by my instep. Hope that will help keep you from falling anymore.

  • @mikeferrannini712
    @mikeferrannini712 6 лет назад

    Wowsa!!!! What a different feel the terrain has up there......absolutely loved the glacier...just up there doing it's thing. You captured some great views from up high too. Mountains seem to have a different cut and shape than the Sierras.....actually the lite smoke made it more interesting to me since fires and smoke are usually a natural occurence anyway....that smoke sure can travel. Hope your nose is better....I liked Joey's reaction to the glacier also...Lewis and Clark spoke of a beautiful rain forest section coming down the Columbia River before they reached the ocean but you were northwest of that...thanks again for sharing this adventure.

    • @CatherineGregoryAdventures
      @CatherineGregoryAdventures  6 лет назад +1

      The Glacier was definitely a jaw dropper. It was so awesome to experience someplace with Joey he has never been. He's seen so much. And to see his excitement at the Glacier was priceless. I agree that the smoke added to the ambiance in some spots. Unfortunately, the last day it got to be way too much. :(

    Beautiful video. I've been to the trail but only hiked a couple of miles with my wife. Father time has caught up with me or I'd go again and do what this young couple did. One good point about falling on your face, I did it while jogging trails back in 1997 and I did break my nose, so it pays to be careful.

      Hi Don. We had a great time. We planned on doing the North Cascades originally, but the smoke diverted us. We figured it wouldn’t be as much of a factor in the canopy of the rainforest. Joey did 2 different trips in the Cascades prior to this one. I saw through his photos how beautifully is. I’m a little disappointed we didn’t get to go there, but I’ll be back for sure. Thank you!

      Hahaa...I remember when I saw Joey’s first video from this season from Alabama, I felt the same way. It was different terrain from what I was used to seeing him in. We really wanted to do a trip in the North Cascades, but figured the smoke was just too bad. That didn’t leave us with many options. Olympic National Park was very crowded and not a lot of options as far as permits, either. We did really enjoy this trip regardless. It was beautiful. Thank you for watching ! Most of those old growth trees were knocked down by the Columbus Day storm in the early 60s. I did a 50 miler after the storm and took a week to go from the east side to the Hoh. Nothing was cleared and basically no trail. Still my No 1 spot in Wash then the Goat Rocks and N. Cascades. Try Blue Glacier in the winter with the ladder. Since you want to comeback to the ocean. Try hiking from ShiShi Beach to La Push and bring a tide book. Most of all Thank You for going to Blue Glacier and not the Trail of Moss that's over crowded.

    • @CatherineGregoryAdventures
      @CatherineGregoryAdventures  6 лет назад +1

      Hi William. I bet that was a tough hike with all those downed trees. I really loved this area. The only part I wasn't too fond of were the crowds for about the first 5 miles with all of the day hikers. Blue Glacier was incredible! I definitely want to go back and see more of the park. Thanks for the tips and info. Much appreciated.

    • @willardwooten9582

      My favorite spot from 70s to now and yes it is over crowded . Don't hike the weekends. Since the year 2000 people multimedia devices have shown our beauty and this is what happens. This is why you have to do multiple days ( 5-7 ) on the coast. North off the Ozette River is a whaling shack with bones you can' lift, south of Cape Alva their are Indian carvings on the rocks on your way to Hole In the Wall. Best In rainy weather cause no one shows up , I like watching the storms roll in.

    What a beautiful trip!! Cat....I (Barbara) can completely relate to your fall. A couple of years ago, my toe caught on a rock in the middle of a river bed and sent me flying. I fell and bashed my head on a sharp rock. I was fortunate to have walked away with a moderate concussion and 4 staples in my head just above my temple. On another occasion, I was trail running and tripped on a tree root. My momentum sent me one direction and my leg another. This incident resulted in a broken pelvic bone that caused my hamstring to be torn away from the bone. That incident resulted in surgery to reattach the hamstring to the bone. Moral of the story, these two incidents taught me to slow down and respect the terrain. This is another reason I am adamant about using my trekking poles. They have saved me more than once. I'm so glad you are OK!! You are so right, it could have been much worse!! On the bright side, you have a cool story to tell!! Thanks for sharing!!

    • @CatherineGregoryAdventures
      @CatherineGregoryAdventures  6 лет назад +1

      Omg Barbara!!! That is some crazy stuff right there. I’m glad it hasn’t traumatized you from going out on the trail. I was carrying both trekking poles in one hand like you see me doing throughout the video. I usually do that when I’m on smooth, easy terrain. Goes to show you anything can happen at any time. Glad you are okay!

    I hope this summer is better than last. So much smoke.
    Stick "Enchanted Valley" on your list.
    Graves creek camp host told me a few years ago, that spring can be muddy on the trail, but that there are over 1000 waterfalls!
    Later in summer it really dries out, but so does all the waterfalls.
    Google it.
    Enchanted valley Olympic national park.
    Never made it, and grew old...
    Someday I will loose 50 lbs and make it.
    Iv looked at the Olympics, in the near view for almost 50 years.

    Oh, I never made it to Olympic Park. Glad you're OK from your face plant Catherine, like you said it could have been much worse. It would seem He was watching out for you from Upstairs.
    Did you see any of the giant bright yellow slugs? The hanging moss and giant trees, plus that humongus fallen one you walked under on the way out were magnificent.
    The glacier views were awesome. I spent time up in WA training on Mt. Rainier for another mountain ( Mt Logan) and never got over there. I had heard it was a rainforest, the only one in North America too.
    I missed so much by not going there, thank you for your video. Sorry the smoke shortened your trip Catherine.

      The Hoh is 1 of 4 temperate rain forest on the west side of the Olympics and the most popular one cause of the Trail of moss. The Quinault has the worlds largest Sitka Tree.

      @CatherineGregoryAdventures  6 лет назад

      We still had an amazing two days there, even with the smoke. As bad as it got, we were very lucky to have some good visibility on the first 2 days. We only saw black slugs and a lot of them! lol Joey thought it was animal poop at first. lol. We had originally planned to backpack the Cascades, but we thought that Olympic Nat'l Park would be less smokey. Also, we figured the majority of it was in the rain forest, so the smoke wouldn't be as big an issue. I'm glad we went there. It was just beautiful!

      Thanks Jon. Working on my editing skills, but I’m definitely not a great editor. lol The good news is I am improving. I’m glad we had a bit of a challenge climbing to the Glacier otherwise the trip would have been too easy. The reward was worth the effort.

    I'm so pleased you didn't injure yourself Catherine. Life is a sliding door. Thankfully you went on to make a great video. Well, after 10 miles Joey found a great site. Running water tends to be very loud but from the sound of it you rested well. Overall it turned out to be varied - very beautiful. Holy Smokes Cat? Surely not a joke? Awesome view of the valley though and equally awesome glacier. . No! Holy smokes was not a joke. It worsened but brilliant up until the end. All the best. Mark

    I think this might have been the first video of yours I watched-before the truck camper. We were "supposed" to go to WA state this fall and this was a hike I wanted to do. But we were planning to go later in Sept and it seemed like it would make more sense weather wise to travel there earlier in September and it was too late to get decent reservations. I live on the east coast and so deal with overcast & rainy weather enough. When we travel I really prefer the dry air & blue skies of the west & southwest. So WA is a bit of a stretch for me.
    My husband lived out there for a while in Port Angeles while working for the Forest Service years ago and he always wants to go back. I'm sure I would like it but it doesn't excite me the same way other places do for some reason.
    I'm watching this right after your new Lake Ediza video with the new 4K camera-I can really tell the difference and I am not the most discerning video person.

    Awesome was wondering when joey (now you as well) was ever gonna do some vids in WA! I recomend High divide over that way & tuck & robin, marmot & jade lakes in Alpine lakes if you guys head back through the cascades & have the time! Happy hiking

    • @CatherineGregoryAdventures
      @CatherineGregoryAdventures  6 лет назад +1

      Thank you for the recommendations. Joey actually had already done 2 trips in the Cascades before this trip. A 9 or 10 day solo trip and a 6 day trip with someone else. He made videos of both of those trips and this one, but hasn't had time to really work on them. We intended on doing a Cascades trip together instead of this one, but with all the smoke up there, we thought Olympic would be less smokey. Thank you!

      The haziness has been really annoying this & last summer as a local hiker, supposed to start clearing up so hopefully it don't bother your next trip too much. Can't go wrong with any hikes in the area i dont think! Thanks for reply, definately be keeping an eye out for those videos & for you two on the trails! Love the lifestyle & looking forward to trying it out full time as well.

      Hahaaa. That’s not a bad idea. lol 😂Thank you. It was definitely a freak accident . I was carrying both trekking poles in my hand so those didn’t catch me. Also, it wasn’t like when you trip and you have that reflex and time to react. The loop of my lace caught so I got airborne and went straight down before I even knew what was happening. Crazy!

    The goats (introduced in the ONP in the '30's ) have been removed from Glacier Meadows recently. They do too much damage to the fragile alpine meadows.

    • @CatherineGregoryAdventures
      @CatherineGregoryAdventures  6 лет назад

      Thank you. We used a Sawyer squeeze for the river water which we wound up having to drink since there were no other water sources near camp, and a SteriPen, for creek water we came across.

  • @larryuknow
    @larryuknow 6 лет назад +1

    Nice video, did you say the river was to silky or silty to drink??? Can you expound little more on the conditions of river? Thanks

    • @CatherineGregoryAdventures
      @CatherineGregoryAdventures  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Larry. The river is silty. It has a grey milky look to it and I believe that has to do with being run-off of a Glacier. We did wind up drinking some of the water however as there were no other water sources near camp. We filtered it through a Sawyer mini and it was fine.

    • @riverrat1149
      @riverrat1149 6 лет назад

      During the hot summer, the glacier melts causing the river to silt up. The glacier is full of glacial flour or ground up rocks. It is fine to drink after filtering. It will back up your filters with the particulate. The silt poses no health risk.

    Thanks for sharing the adventure and also glad your fall didn't shorten it. What's your philosophy about leaving a tent set up when going away for a day hike? Buttoned up? Or doors open? Some folks want to keep animals out and close things up. Others want to make sure animals don't damage the tent and so leave the doors open. I guess you hung more than just food knowing the coyote was around. Did it leave any tracks around your campsite? Thanks!

    • @CatherineGregoryAdventures
      @CatherineGregoryAdventures  6 лет назад

      Thank you. I don’t leave my tent often, but I always close it up. I think I’m more worried about humans taking something and if it’s closed, they may not be sure if you are in there.

    The videos are beautiful of the landscapes and love seeing places I’ve never been and most likely won’t see :). Question, for suggestions on hiking sticks. I’m wanting something for helping me stay steady with easy trails. My husband and I are only gonna be doing easy short trails for sightseeing and spending time with our family and grandkids. There are so many different kinds of sticks/poles but I don’t want to break the bank getting anything that’s too expensive but I don’t want to buy junk either. Thank you for any suggestions on hiking poles/sticks you can give.

    • @CatherineGregoryAdventures
      @CatherineGregoryAdventures  5 лет назад

      Thank you! I've had two sets of trekking poles. One was the REI Traverse...They actually broke and the locking mechanism did not always lock them down. They'd slip. I have a pair of Black Diamond poles now and I love them. They were $100. That's the lower end pricing for decent poles. Here's a link: www.rei.com/product/147515/black-diamond-trail-trekking-poles-pair
