  • Come along on my first solo backpacking overnight trip in the Eastern Sierra. I face some fears sleeping in the backcountry alone for the first time ever!
    Note: This video was filmed with my Sony RX100 III mounted on a tripod. I set up each shot, hit record and walk/step in front of the camera. I've received a few comments from folks who thought I may not actually be alone because someone had to be filming me. I just wanted to clarify this for the people who may not understand the filming process. It's more work, but I think the result is worth it. Thank you all so much for watching!! I appreciate it!

    Quick update on my tent poles. I sent them in to Big Agnes to have the shock cord replaced and they have informed me they are repairing them free of charge! Now that is awesome customer service! Thank you Big Agnes!

    I prefer solo backpacking. After you do it for a while, your mind will filter out the normal, usual night noise.
    If I hear something walking through the leaves close to my camp, I will be instantly awake and listen to see what type of critter it might be. Hooves are just deer, anything else and I will roll out of my hammock and take a better look. I like people, but solo is better. A person can walk as fast or slow as they want, stop
    and just stare at the wild and camp where the mood strikes you. Only agenda is yours.

    Since retiring in Dec I have watched a lot of hiking videos especially the PCT or any hike up here. Cat I am tired of watching everyone else in the woods. So last week this old fart bought an Ascend 5400 cu in backpack and will be buying once a month to prepare myself for my first hike in 30 years . The closes place to me is the Goat Rocks so this spring with snow still on the ground in May I am hiking in as far as I can go in a weekend whether it's 2 miles or 20 it doesn't matter cause I will be out again. If I do well then I can go back to Blue Glacier and it's surroundings.

      That is so awesome Willard!!! I am really inspired by the folks I see out there in their 60's and 70's. It is common. I met a woman solo backpacking in Glacier National park traversing sketchy snow fields over Boulder Pass in Grizzly Country! She was 60. She was a true inspiration. Please let me know how it goes.

      Mr Woolen, just remember junk expands to fill the rucksack available. 5400 cu in is HUGH. The bag Cat is carrying in this video is probably less than 4000 cu in.

      I'm curious about those places you mentioned.
      I started my first PCT hike just over 30 days ago at 51 years old. I had to pull off the PCT after two weeks, but I'm still in the woods (going for 40 nights as my primary goal).
      I seriously overpacked (mostly food). I'm not an "athlete", but I am an infantry veteran which helps. That said, I underestimated the need for upperbody conditioning -- my legs were strong and ready, but strong legs arent enough. Core and upper back strength and endurance are also critical.
      I hope your prepping goes well. It really is a mental challenge more than anything. If you can really see yourself in the bush, then you've already gone the most important step imo. The rest is just follow-through.

    • @gregparrott
      @gregparrott 5 лет назад

      Willard Wooten As Halffastcyclist said, 5400 in^3 (almost 90 liters) is huge. A pack that large will have a sturdy frame, and weigh at least 6 pounds (mine is over 7). Figure out what target weight you plan for your trips and see if the pack's weight relative to the rest of the items you carry seems reasonable. I sometimes use one that large to ease the packing of tents and sleeping bags (much less compression effort is needed)

    You picked an excellent trail for your first solo! You also took it at a quiet time of the year. Parker is one of the easiest trails in the entire eastern Sierra. It is also one of the most spectacular views for such a short and nearly flat trail. My wife and I take a lot of house guests there, people who are not in great shape and are not at all acclimated.
    Bald eagles often hunt ducks in the fall. I've seen a few times when bald eagles have killed them on Twin Lakes. Watching a predator killing prey is incredible, nature at its finest and I have felt incredibly lucky to have seen these events several times.
    I love to hike alone and I like to be in groups as well. I'm not a social butterfly and can feel quite uncomfortable at parties, but I'm at my best when I'm backpacking with others. I'm in my element and have a great time telling stories about my career, college, living in remote locations and seem to remember jokes better if I'm in the backcountry. I hiked and worked alone in some very remote areas during my career, so I love solitude as well. When I took my first trips alone just out of high school I was pretty on edge when I was alone. I took a solo 100 mile trip in Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Parks when just prior to my junior year of college and was still not completely comfortable. One night I was alone in a 25 mile stretch of trail with a major pass to cross the next day. The day after, in that same portion of trail I had to make a crossing of the upper Kern River in late July following a very heavy winter.
    It is funny to think back on those days, after having to work solo for a week and hike into locations that were far more remote than my first trips. On the job I also had my buddy "handi talkie" with me, although I had to travel in some radio blind spots at times. I'm retired from the U.S. Forest Service. This was 20 years before GPS was available to anyone, most especially the higher resolution GPS that was allowed after 1999 or 2000. There is much better radio coverage now than there was then.
    Hiking past October 15th used to be a bit of a crap shoot as weather forecasting was not a accurate as recently as the mid 1990's. A prediction of wind and party cloudy only could result in a major snowstorm the next day. In addition winters are shorter and warmer than they were 20-25 years ago. This on average anyway. Anyone hiking in the high elevations of the Sierra Nevada anytime past October 1st, or any mountain range, should be very aware of the weather predictions and be extra cautious.

    Good for you! I did my first solo overnight backpacking trip on the Superior Hiking Trail two years ago. Boy, was that a learning experience! So glad I slept next to a rushing river so I didn't hear every little twig snapping at night in the forest. But I felt proud of myself when I walked out of the woods the next day.
    About your tent...I had my 4 year old Marmot Limelighter 3P fly zipper pull/head thingy come all the way off. Contacted Marmot, and for the cost of sending it to them, they fixed/reinforced both zippers. They also sent the little plastic part that held the tent poles together which broke (operator error) free of charge. If you can't or don't want to fix your tent pole, give Big Agnes a call. I'm sure they'll want to keep a good customer who has a youTube channel with almost 5K subscribers happy. ;-)

    Good Job on your solo. Wolves won’t ever bother you, you have lots of deer around. I have had wolves surround my tent at night checking us out from a distance, quite the chorus. REI can set a new bungee chord in the pole for you if you can’t get the tent maker to comp you one. You had a tripod. You might experiment with light painting a scene of your camp using your head lamp and image stacking. Headlamp isn’t enough to light trees , but you could illuminate your tent in the scene. Being in the Ansel Adams wilderness, aren’t you suppose to have your 8x10 camera with you and shooting B&W ? :)

    So brave to post your most vulnerable first backpacking overnight trip. Good to know that lake has a lot of ducks this time of year, wondering when duck season is. Gonna look that up now. Very helpful to see the video, thank you. Grizzlies sound completely terrifying, being eaten alive, without a chance of defense. The scenery there is so beautiful. This video is a confidence booster for me, start small, work your way up to bigger trips. I'll share I'm watching this at a point in my life, that I feel very low, worthless, and am trying to find hope, something to look forward, like backpacking. I don't have friends right now, and my family has pushed me away, practically abandoned me, so its just me. That will do it. This kind of video lets me imagine something better, something else, far away, somewhere else. I just love the sierras.

    I have been doing solo backpacking since I was a teen and I am in my 50s now. I am an Eagle Scout. Solo backpacking I got to see 3 bighorn sheep on San Gorgonio. Solo hiking I ran into a mountain lion, twice hiking into the Starvation Creek Sequoia Grove. You make less noise and are more observant. You also go at your own speed. I always check in and out with someone on both hiking and backpacking with trail routes and trailheads. I have only had problems with raccoons on many different trips at night and I detest them. My first solo in the Sierra was from McGee Creek pack station to Devil's Postpile over three nights in about 1990. The first night was brutally windy (end of September) exposed at Big McGee Lake,
    but it was absolutely serene otherwise. And no mosquitos in late September. The morning was quiet and cloudless. I had the place to myself. Going over McGee Pass felt like conquering Everest to me for some reason. I remember getting into Purple Lake after dark on the second night and, while it was really quiet with a full moon and not a ripple on the lake, about 2:00AM I was awakened by loud growling on the other side of the lake which I otherwise thought I had to myself. It really spooked me, and I remember hoping the fiend wasn't coming my way. I was cowboy camping, and
    my REI mummy bag was not making me feel very safe! Back then, I didn't know how skiddish the black bears are. My third night was at Iva Bell Hot Springs, which was a real curiosity. Lots of loose people running around. I popped out on the fourth day and stayed the weekend in Mammoth before returning home. Lots of fun. Kudos on taking the leap. You really have an eye for good footage. Thanks much.

    Solo camping is legit. I have done it many times and never sleep that great until the 3rd night. It takes awhile for our city bodies to adjust to the mountain Rythm. Try sleeping by running water or use ear buds and listen to a podcast. Also a little sleep aid works wonders until you body adjusts to the silence.

      I sometimes forget that elite infantry life taught me the outdoors from a different angle. Overworked, underfed, sleep-deprived grunts have few sleep issues (until later in life). I have even spent an undetermined number of minutes sleeping while on a night march once.
      The topic of sleep is an important one to educated grunts, and an important element relates to human survival instincts. This is why sleep is often elusive to anyone in a new place, new sounds, etc. It often takes several days for the brain to recategorize new sounds from 'unknown/potential hazard' to 'safe/not significant' Experience tends to condense the adjustment time from days to hours to minutes eventually.
      Even with that, I have been in a couple spots where trees rubbing together in the wind were so eerie/creepy and just plain annoying that I had to move on away from there.

    • @whome9392
      @whome9392 5 лет назад +3

      @3smoke yeah, it usually takes me one night to adjust enough to get okay sleep on the second night. And thats even with always being armed while camping. I have to disagree on the earbuds suggestion, though. If you block your hearing, you won't know if something (or someone) is lurking around or approaching your tent.

    • @johnparker7784
      @johnparker7784 5 лет назад +3

      I've hiked thousands upon thousands of miles alone but I'm a male. I would never recommend a female hike alone without a gun (that shes knows how to use very well). Do some research about people being attacked on the trail. it's not as rare as you think. Women are especially vulnerable.

    • @ronaldmcdonald9147
      @ronaldmcdonald9147 5 лет назад +1

      @@whome9392 totally agree about the earbuds.
      Additionally, I think that part of the outdoor experience is lost when someone spends hours and hours everyday with those things in. To each his (or her) own, but I think it's kinda like getting in the swimmin' pool with your feet on the bottom the whole time, meaning that you arent really in.
      As long as ppl dont increase risks, that's really the main thing, but I find it sadly ironic that the electronic gizmos are taking over some trails where bicycles arent even allowed (The 'Wilderness' is for primitive trekking, not for mechanical devices like bicycles)

    You are a mountain Guide showing your vulnerable self how to do solo trips at 80% of your typical level of effort and exploration. I have done three solos: Florence Lake to Goddard Canyon, Burma Vista Lake in Yosemite Park and South Lake to North Lake over Muir Pass (my ultimate prize so far). You want to involve others in your life in the mountains so don’t be afraid of more close-ups when you are out there. Bring us closer to your whispers of wonder.

    Don’t store your tent anywhere it is exposed to heat! I stored my tent in a shed in my back yard, and I had the same problem with my poles.

      Unless the poles are made with a crappy resin, they should handle temperatures well beyond the boiling point for water, let alone what any closet would experience (~150F ?). My guess is that tent makers buy poles from multiple sources and some may have quality control problems with the bonding of the resin to the fiberglass. It the tent manufacturer is one known for high quality, they will learn the issue from multiple buyers and offer free (quality) replacement poles.

      Guns are prohibited on the PCT unless it is rifle hunting season and you have a hunting license. In fact, a very mentally unstable PCT hiker this year threatened to shoot some other PCT hikers according to some NoBo hikers I met along the trail this year when I was going SoBo. Another hiker was trying to do some trail magic for him as someone stole his camping stove and he almost shot him, for example. Leave the guns at home!!!

      J W This is also what all you the security divisions of the park services say as well. Besides, who wants to carry all that extra weight on the trail? I love having a 9 lb. base weight!

    • @PhoenixGenesis
      @PhoenixGenesis 5 лет назад +1

      Michael Bandeko The problem with the firearms are multi-fold with numerous laws regarding carry vs discharge of the weapon. You cannot take the firearms into the ranger stations, so you can’t get overnight use permits. You cannot conceal the firearm - it has to be an open carry, so help from trail angels diminishes as does hitchhiking opportunities. Also, the armed law enforcement officer who sees a hiker pulling a gun on another hiker, does not know if you (the victim) is actually the original assailant (the perp). This is a good way for a hiker who has limited experience with firearms to get shot. Also, self-defense involves using minimal force to defend oneself. A gun is simply overkill. As to carrying the weapon, the ammo must be separated and locked in transport. And when in the temporary residence ( the tent), it must be secured. This allows another home-invasion scenario whereby someone else can get ahold of your gun. I am sure you are using your gun for hunting and have a hunting license and are an experienced gun owner, but most PCT hikers are inexperienced with both the backcountry and gun safety and use. This is a recipe for disaster where someone will get killed. Lastly, most PCT thru-hikers like to travel ultralight. A gun is heavy. Most hikers have knives and trekking poles that they can use in self-defense. Rocks are plentiful as well in the woods. Whistles are great as well. I also have a signal dog who will notify me of sounds while I camp at night.

    Great video. Glad you took the time to get out of the comfort zone and go solo. You become so much more connected to the environment.
    Just a bit of advice as you continue to explore more places: Buy a SAT phone such as InReach, for emergencies. Buy a large knife and carry it on your hip. Most people on the trails are super nice, but there are some strange ones out there. Be careful. Last thing is bring a compact fishing pole. If you under-packed and run out of food, there is a lot of hungry fish in the mountain lakes and creeks that can feed you and keep you alive until you make it back to your vehicle.
    Have fun!!!
