Not in a nutshell, that is the literal (literal) explanation for how glory kills work. It's completely canonical to the lore that the Doom Slayer spontaneously heals after killing a foe with his bare hands, and that is reflected in gameplay.
The phrase "in a nutshell" means "said in the short way", so "literal explanation", and "in a nutshell" don"t contradict eachother, as you hint.

The way these testaments were laid out makes me think that Hell has like a tourist attraction and at the very end of the walking trail they had Doom Slayer's tomb right next to a gift shop with all the little collectable toys you get in the game.
of course they did have a giftshop next to the casket. They had The Doomslayer safely contained.

I always found this line to be interesting. When I first heard it, it made me think "Oh, so the slayer was probably in pain while he was in the sarcophagus. In a way, the demons didn't just contain the threat, they got a cherry on top." But then later I realized that no, the slayer wasn't in actual pain. The simple act of being *restrained* was his suffering. The way the demons view it, the slayer kills demons like people breathe; to him, it's a *necessity* - his default state of being - so simply keeping the slayer restrained and unable to commit demon genocide is the equivalent of choking or drowning a regular person.
Well, its less like breathing and drowning, its more like he is just so angry he hurts himself when he isnt killing demons. And it isnt his default being, he is just anger.

@@scrp6638 his anger was slowly building up and as you daid couldn't unleash it, the silent suffering, and when he emerged in doom 2016 he unleashed all of his fury upon the deombs once more and has most likely learned from his mistake from getting trapped before 2016, so the demons stand no chance now

I'm still kind of confused how the unmayker was found in hell in 64. But the Mayker didn't know about hell before the slayer arrived

Nothing in gaming will ever be more badass than the realisation that this long and drawn out myth wrote by the demons of a demon slaying warrior so powerful that he brought hell to it's knees is that you, the player character, are the nebulous monster that they're shit scared of.
Makes those later levels in hell where Demons get utterly assblasted by your fully upgraded arsenal so much more satisfying when between combat encounters there's these little lore tidbits stating how much they're utterly fucking terrified of you.
But the best part is the fact that even without those tidbits, you’d still get that impression anyway!

This line is probably the most terrifying. The idea that the only thing capable of making the Slayer suffer is a halt to his carnage is horrifying. No line builds up his rage and desperation more than this one

I'm pretty sure the Wretch in that testament is Samur Maykr, who is responsible for spiriting away The Father and arming the Slayer with the divinity machine and Praetor suit. The demons fear the Slayer but respect him. They have nothing but hate and comtempt for Hayden.

"He chose the path of perpetual torment"= Even though he was the only one on earth after episode 2 (Doom 2) he decided to keep going and defeat the Icon of Sin, he also chose to stay in hell to make sure that no demon would harm earth again (Doom 64).
"In his ravenous hatred, he found no peace"= It's said in the manuals (Doom 64) that he had PTSD after Doom 1 and 2.
"And with boiling blood he scoured the Umbral Plains Seeking vengeance against the dark lords who had wronged him" = the Slayer knew the demons were responsible for Daisy's death and he killed the second Spider Mastermind in revenge (Doom 1 chapter 4: thy flesh consumed)
That really makes sense to me, but they (the testaments) could also be talking about the other events that happened on Argent D'nur.

after spending an unknown amount of time in hell, an insane and half-dead doomguy stumbles upon sentinel prime, whose people take him in and make him a demon hunter in the night sentinels. not just that, but he was imbued with their power after one member caught wind of corruption in the maykrs ranks.
that's right. doomguy becomes the doom slayer who ends up becoming a legend!

Humans then much much later find him buried in mars(In the Milky Way galaxy). Where Hell tried to hide him from being discovered by anyone or anything. The only problem is that I guess the demons didnt expect humanity to be as advanced as we had become (space travel). Demons/Hell itself are like Doom guy. Meaning they also come from a different Dimension and are extremely warlike and go from Dimension to Dimension killing and assimilating everyone and everything they think will make them stronger.
That is the official lore of Doom fyi. Not my made up interpretation.

When I was playing the game, I was all about the endless slaughter. By sheer luck I found all of these. I really wanted to find this guy and kick his ass. It was later when I realized that I was that guy.

Just note that health and death mechanics only exist for the sake of gameplay. Lore-wise, the demons probably couldn't even touch him without losing their own body parts in the process. PS, according to lore, Glory-kills replenish his stamina so he doesn't tire. Not exactly the same as health.
It says in the testament that he drew strength from every foe he killed. So nah, it's more than just vidya game nonsense. Every mechanic is diagetic.
The gameplay mechanics is our entertainment in video games and it doesn't represent their actual limits of their strength for most game characters. It does not necessarily align and coincide with the Lore of the game you are playing.

Videos games are limited to what they can do especially with characters like Doom Slayer if Doom Slayer was one-shotting all of his opponents then the game wouldn't be fun they have to make their games interesting otherwise people won't play them. this would apply video game characters like Kratos from God of War and Asura from Asura's Wrath.
Moral of the story: Don't tell Doomguy to go to hell. He's a man of his word (or rather his actions).

A demonic voice saying, “HE IS HERE.” In short, a juggernaut of demon-slaying rage has just (re)entered Hell, and the inhabitants know that they’re screwed.

When the lore is so good they decided to make a game about it. I cannot be more excited for Doom the Dark Ages and see the story unfold through the Doom Slayer's perspective.

Just a friendly reminder that gameplay mechanics is for our entertainment in video games and it doesn't represent their actual limits of their strength for most game characters and it doesn't necessarily align and do not coincide with the Lore of the game you are playing. If Doom's gameplay resemble it's Lore counterpart then the gameplay loop of Doom Eternal would just be the Doom Slayer running around using infinite Berserk Mode and one-shotting every single entire demon. And to summarize the content of the entire trilogy, you are reading the first person account of a man named Dante as he journeys body and soul through limbo, hell, purgatory, and finally heaven. The story begins with Dante's Inferno, where we are given a very brief description of our main character, Dante.
In this quasi-biblically inspired fictional story, Dante is a rather well known poet living in Rome Italy in the year 1300. Eventually becoming stuck altogether, almost feeling as though he was unable to even collect his thoughts anymore. After 35 years of growing up here, he had come to witness both the Catholic Church and political scene as a whole, grow increasingly corrupt. Additionally, the immense amount of corruption found in both the church and political scene at the time, made it difficult for anyone to voice their honest opinion to the public in regards to practically any social issues that came to light. Watching the flame that was his passion slowly begin to grow dim, Dante became deeply distraught. Finally, lost in his own thoughts and feelings, Dante decides to take a walk in a nearby forest to help clear his mind. It was very late at night when Dante set out into the forest. As he walked through the dense woods, his thoughts began to flow more freely. Wandering deeper still into the woods, Dante started to think about one of the things that weighed heavily on his mind, and that was the fact that today was a Catholic holy day known as "Holy Thursday" (the day that Jesus Christ held the last supper with his 12 apostles) and in just a few hours it would be "Good Friday" (the day that Jesus Christ was crucified). For practicing Catholics, these aforementioned holy days are supposed to be a time dedicated to self-reflection and reconciliation. However, for Dante, these holy days had begun to hold less and less importance with each passing year. While witnessing the world around him only grow more corrupt, Dante had a hard time finding the mental strength to even care about such things as "holy days". Now unbeknownst to Dante who was still far too busy being trapped by his own thoughts, in a place beyond human understanding, the Virgin Mary (the Mother of Jesus Christ) (symbolic of compassion) and Saint Lucia (symbolic of illuminating Grace) had seen Dante's struggle grow more and more debilitating as the years went on. Finally, having been moved by witnessing his spiritual trials and tribulations slowly build up to their breaking point, the Virgin Mary and Saint Lucia decide to ask God to help Dante get his life back on the right path, and God graciously hears and answers their prayers. Meanwhile, as Dante wanders deeper into the dark forest, his surroundings quickly become less and less familiar. On top of this, Dante inexplicably begins to feel very tired, and suddenly collapses from exhaustion. When he finally awakens from his involuntary slumber, he looks around and suddenly, the only thing he knows for certain is that he is very lost. Little did he know that in just a hour or so, Dante would find himself at the gates to hell, with an unexpected but much appreciated companion by his side, ready to start his journey into the depths of hell. Now then, it should be noted that the appearance of such imagery and ideas within the church itself mainly stems from the common man’s conflation of the religiously inspired writings of Dante’s Inferno, with the actual teachings and sparse biblical depictions of hell. This widespread adoption of the non canonical imagery and ideas discussed by Dante is assumed to have occurred solely because of the aforementioned scarce number of depictions of Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven within the Bible itself. And so as such, The Divine Comedy helped to quickly fill the gaps in mind of the common man, giving him a “true” perception of Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven, allowing it to exist concretely in the thoughts of the common man as both a physical and spiritual realm in a way it never had before. The nine circles of hell, the beasts of the nine circles, the city of Dis, the lakes of blood, the fire, the demons, the Titans, the gates of hell itself (upon which is inscribed the phrase “Abandon all hope, ye who enter.”), our perception of hell going down into the depths, our perception of Purgatory, our perception of Angels, our perception of Heaven, and countless more, all of these things as we envision them in our minds today come from The Divine Comedy. Before the creation of Dante’s Inferno and The Divine Comedy as a whole, there had been many writings which only lightly bantered with the ideas and imagery of hell, most if not all of which were ultimately unsuccessful in capturing the mind of the common man. Low poems had happy endings and were written in everyday language, whereas High poems were exclusively devoted to more serious matters and were written in an elevated style. Dante was one of the first in the Middle Ages to write of a serious subject, the Redemption of humanity, in the low and "vulgar" Italian language and not the Latin that one might expect for such a serious topic. So as you can see, The Divine Comedy not only captivated the common man with its vivid depictions of Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven, but also with its highly controversial denunciations of the powers that be. And perhaps most importantly, it successfully reached the masses because of Dante's brilliant decision to write the poem in the language of the common man. The Divine Comedy became one of the greatest works of world literature ever created, and truthfully, this is precisely the accolade this poem deserves.

There's a detail in here that gives more praise to the Slayer's strength than it seems at a glance: "The Hell Walker sought prey in the tombs of the Blood Keep, and blinded by his fervor, the lure drew him in. The priests brought down the temple upon the Doom Slayer, and in his defeat entombed him in the cursed sarcophagus." Now, if the temple is designed like I'm thinking it is, the tombs would be UNDER the temple. So the only way for them to actually stop the Slayer long enough to achieve anything was to literally crush him with an entire CATHEDRAL. And, of course, HE STILL SURVIVES IT.
The Blood Temple was the size of a mountain. In Doom 2016, if you get all of the UAC logs in the Hell level, they mention that the UAC had to dig into a bunch of collapsed underground ruins and tombs under a mountain to find the Sarcophagus, and that the demons fought ferociously to both protect the Sarcophagus and to prevent the UAC teams from taking it back to the portal. Hayden literally sent an army into Hell to get the Sarcophagus. The "mountain" that the UAC guys excavated WAS the Blood Temple, or what was left of it.

The reason the Praetor suit is covered in a variety of human marks and displays English text is probably because the UAC tried experimenting with it after its recovery, thus adding in new features of their own.
I believe that there's a multiverse in the DOOM lore and the Slayer's origins lies in one of them. Maybe all that shit about his armor being forged in Hell and stuff are just myths the demons created to explain something that they couldn't understand (or at least part of those stories). He has been the scourge of Hell for so long that nobody knows who he actually is and where he came from.
