  • Sydnee is the mom of twin 11-year-old boys Jake and Ian. When the boys were younger, Sydnee noticed that Ian was not developing as fast as his brother. Ian was evaluated, and diagnosed with autism. On the first episode of Our Special Life, we see what life is like for the Jorgl family, as they work with Ian's teachers at The Brooklyn Autism Center (www.brooklynaut...) to help him develop.
Our Special Life looks into the lives of families with special needs children. In each episode, we'll profile a family facing realities and challenges as they raise a child with special needs.

i have an 11 year old child who i knew since he was about 6 months old there was something wrong when he was slow on development. they found he was born with truama to the brain. to this day he is slow at learning but he has stolen my heart and ran like hell with it. it has been a wonderful journey of learning on both of our parts and i know i will continue along side him for the rest of our lives.he is my angel

Could i just hug you? I have been living with that feeling my whole life. Ever since i was diagnosted with some horrible diseases and syndroms the only people who were next to me 24/7 were my boyfriend and my 2 doctors for whom i am so greatful for. I was said to die 4 years ago (so at 10) and one thing my mother said was "good" Show your mom that you can do it! Do not give up no matter what!

The Gorgl mom is ann excellent advocate for Ian, she has the right to do what ever it takes for her son to advance into this cruel world, but thank God there's more good people than evil.

I LOVED this video. My child is autistic and doesn't count to 7000 by 3s in 7 seconds, doesn't recite every animal known in Sub-Saharan Africa or multiply by 8 digits at a time, and isn't a musical prodigy. We prompt him and he answers and is thrilled to be with us. This video showed a child who isn't "a prodigy, ZOMG, that means autism is amazing!" ALL people with autism are people and are amazing.

I can only be glad for you that you have never had to deal with this and hence, don't understand it. I mean it truly, with no sarcasm, I am thrilled for you and am thrilled for everyone who has never had to really know such an issue and therefore, can lead what is generally called a normal life, without these particular struggles. Keep on keepin' on and I hope some day you're more understanding, but that's not really for me to say.

NYC has a lot of AWESOME special needs schools... how do I know, you may ask?
I have autism (as well as mild Tourettes and mild ADD), and I have went to special needs schools my entire life. They have helped me tremendously, as you can probably tell by my writing skill alone. It was totally the opposite before I entered Kindergarten!

i have two grandsons have autism, nate the youngest lives with us, i got him the wii game system so that he and i can interact together at his level, he goes to a special school, but due to the cut backs to the schools in calif. its more of a class size of 20. at times its very hard for us because people don't seem to be kind to special kids, and i find myself protecting him against the world, make more vids or even make your own you tube channel that would be great, thanks for the great video

I've failed all my math classes since 4th grade and have needed an aid for it since. My IQ and language skills are off the charts and my imagination is vast, but my social and communication skills are very low. My learning in a few other classes are also a bit low. I'm 16 and I have Autism.

My cousin is autistic, and I have just come back from a week in Lourdes with handicapped children. I have to say, it was such a beautiful experience, and a number of times brought me to tears. I too am doing a documentary on autism, following my cousin. This video is so true, and I understand every word Sydnee says. But I am so shocked and disheartened by the likes of @NHTU708 - how evil can you get? People like him should be off youtube, I don't mind trolling, but him- he just crosses the line.

@cherilyn ......autistic children do this all the time, they process things way differently then we do sometimes the noise can be just too loud for them even tho it is not to us hearing sensitivity and also their brain runs 1000x faster then us it helps to slow the info down if it is just too much..........i have 2 nieces who are autistic and both plug their ears or even put their hands over their ears

While the idea of using natural medicine is great, it does not work for all children or parents. It is also a very high maintenance way of life and can be very expensive. It has been shown to improve certain symptoms but every disability and every disease is individual so what works for one person does not necessarily work for another.

You don't find out a child will have learning disabilities, such as Autism, until they are developing outside the womb. It isn't an easy decision for parents to abort a child because there is a RISK that the child will have Autism. Well, throughout everyday life people face risks of contracting various diseases all the time but that doesn't mean that people stop living. Children with Autism do not necessarily suffer because it is the only thing they know; they find ways of coping to function

That is true that natural medicine can have a positive effect on many people but it is not by any means the end all cure to health problems. It is very expensive to buy the natural products- most grocery stores mark their prices up. Therefore, people do not buy these products because they may not be able to afford them. Natural medicine can do wonders for the health of people, I agree with that, but natural medicine does not guarantee that people are going to have no health problems.

miracles are an everyday occurrence. the impossible takes a little longer. impossible is only impossible if you buy into that and I don't. - Be well lad - be whole - be healed - be happy - healing sent. there is no such thing as a big or a small miracle - just miracles.
