As an old man, I get pleasure from watching young people mastering a craft. Just subscribed.

Thank you so much that was a really great informative video. I am restoring an old hat, a western hat where the leather sweat band just came apart in my hands while I was trying to shape it and it’s got no lining so I thought maybe I could redo it, but I had no idea how I don’t have any special sewing machines so your video was a great help and I really appreciate how well you made it. Thank you, keep them coming.

This is super helpful! I’m making a cowboy hat for my millinery class right now, and I had some questions about the sweatband and liner. Thank you!

I do got one question though, the wire. I’ve never put a wire in the sweatband before. It seems like a great idea, considering how floppy that hat is, and how much structured needs. But what kind of wire was it? How thin, like the width of a pin?

It was basically a wire that is used for jewlery making usually they have different thicknesses to choose from

You may want to research purchasing "hat reeds" from a millinery supply store. The reeds are made of synthetic material or bamboo. Hope this helps. Happy Hatting!!

What type of stitch do you use to sew the sweat band on?

This is just what I was looking for. I knit, then felt hats. I would like to insert a leather band and liner into my western style hats. Any suggestions as to how to do this without a template?

    • @jtleathercrafter683

Measuring is key you have to Measuring the inside of the hat. It is better with a template though

Sweatbands are usually cut in an ark & not in a straight strip which avoids crimples & waves. The ends where they join at the back are cut at angles too & not just cut perpendicular. Remember too, the thickness of the leather is important as you could drop a size of hat if the leather is too thick.

Is there a follow up video?

So I unfortunately don't work for this company anymore as I'm a contractor and they took all of my client's so unfortunately I wouldn't be able to get a follow up video unless he watches my videos. 🙂

I am being gifted a Flechet rabbit fur felt hat. It's about 10 years old. The leather sweatband needs to be replaced. Do you have an email I could send photos to you and you could give me and estimate for replacement? Thank you
