Test drove rail 7 and middle range fuel ex. The fuel exe had way more assistance than I thought. Feels like a normal bike in essence handling-wise. Rail 7 is still really nimble back to back, it's a lot heavier to pick up but in motion you quickly accommodate. Braking is different as fuel had Shimano so stopped suddenly but rail had SRAM which was wayyy more progressive. In the end deposit down for the rail 7. For same price I'm getting better components, forks and shock better, 625wh battery, more power. I'm not a technical rider, I don't jump or do big drops. I want stability and the luxury of range should I want. I was tempted by the fuel though, if it had 400+ wh out the box without buying a range extender I'd be tempted. I think the rail is just going to be a riot and at 73kg without back pack and relatively fit I think the bike will be a good fit. I mean If I was 77kg it would negate weight savings of the fuel althought I realise there is something for the bike itself being lighter, I see very advanced rider footage of people throwing the fuel around, I'll never grow to that level the fear centre of my brain doesn't allow it! Will bungy jump for days though..

For sure! That’s the only problem. How do you ride with full powered ebike friends or regular bike friends. You’re kind of in an awkward middle ground with the EXe 🤷🏼♂️
I have a Trek Rail 9.7. Really great bike. I can't understand why anyone would want an emtb with a weaker motor. It's kind of like...you know, this is WAY too much fun. I want to have a bike with a weaker motor, so I can work harder, go slower but golly...I'll have a more "acoustic" feel. Makes no sense.
I agree with you that the Rail is so much fun. In fact, I didn’t realize how much fun it was flying up the hills until I rode one. However, the rail was a bit too heavy when hitting jumps on the way back down hill. I’m the guy that’s always looking for the jumps, gaps, drops and hidden features on the trail. So for me the fuel EXe fit my riding style better. But the Rail is definitely a blast as well 👍🏻
@@JaredHoff I own a Rail 9 GX. Its awesome, totally. But 90% of the time my rides consist of 8-9 miles up the hill. Then down the hill.... I don't need a big battery that will take me 30 miles. For me the Exe will become my 'everyday ' ride. The Rail will be my long trail ride 🤟
Its because the Rail e-bike with its huge down tube, large motor that sticks out like sore thumb, its noisy motor with gears and belts that bang around when going down hill is NOT stealth!!! Would be way easier to sneak the Fuel EXe into a Park that doesn't allow e-bike's!
@@JaredHofflove my 9.7 Fuel Exe. I test Road a Rail because my local dealer didn’t have any Exe’s. I was like, “nah, I’ll wait for the Exe”. Simply put, I was really into MTB in the early 90’s. Loved it. Then career became a focus for awhile, and now I wanted to get back into MTB. But had no interest in a large, powerful MTB. I wanted a “normal” acoustic bike. But once the Exe came out it is such a great design and really melds the two classes together. It rides and feels like a regular bike, but with just a little bit of assistance when needed. Most of my rides are in Eco mode, and rarely do I get into mid, or boost mode. I want a workout when I ride. If I want power, I jump on my KTM 500exc. Maybe the same reason I have never ridden a sit-down jet ski…have only ridden standups. But I am 52, so I do enjoy the little bit of power the Exe provides.
I just had a chance test Fuel exe and its a nice bike however for me its a bit lagging in power but love the light weight. I have the Rail 7 and its an awesome bike. I would have purchased the new Fuel had trek made two versions. If they would have offered a 450 to 500 battery and a motor 75nm motor would have for me hit it out of the park. Hopefully trek will come out with this in the future.
I just rode the Rail 9.8 XT again yesterday for a bike review. So much fun! I think there will be a Ebike like you mentioned about very soon. But I was surprised how much I liked the rail even at 53.5 lbs 😬

Good comparison. The Rail would be to big of a bike for my type of riding. I'd go with the Exe since I ride for distance with climbs. Plus, it's nice to be able to pedal home if I run out of battery.

I can live with a little less torque. The Fuel Ex-e is nice, EXCEPT for the 140/150 travel...not enough for enduro-style trail riding for many, if not most. Sure, when you're a pro/elite skill-level shredder you could ride a $200 Walmart beach cruiser with your grandma's handle-bar mounted grocery basket better than 95% of E-mtbers...(it's a compliment). So to top-dogs, a little less travel is inconsequential, but I'm an unskilled huckster and NEED the bike's technology to help overcome inferior skill....so give me the extra plush!😉 But to be proactive, I'm starting the rumor here: next year make the Stash--E iteration for 160/170 travel, and beef up the torque to a 60 Nm TQ motor...and boom!!! My Rail 9.7 is bastardized with 170 Zeb (Luftkappe air piston), slightly over stroked coil shock for 157 rear travel, heavy duty DH carbon wheels, TRP DH-Evo hard stopper brakes, DH 2-ply tread with Cushcore. Bike is hard hitter trail smasher, but a bit short on battery life even in Tour most the time with some ECO with 625 battery. Have to pack 2nd battery for any substantial trail rides above 20 miles and over 3,000ft climbing. Bike weighs at 53 lbs despite carbon frame. Lighter Rail with TCU 65-75nM sounds the ticket with at least 750 battery sounds the ticket. I am eyeing the Relay in 23’ myself.
Great review! I’ve spent considerable time on both bikes and the Rail 9.8XT really rocked, but own the 9.8XT EXe for its more natural MTB experience. That said, had I not already owned a Powerfly FS7, I’d own both. I also have experience on the E-Caliber 9.8GX and that by comparison to the EXe is more agile and responsive to inputs, and better for the trails I ride most of the time but the 60 mm rear travel is a bit light and translates much more harshness and vibration over the rough stuff.

Been in the market and back and forth on these in 9.8 levels... Owned both Fuel 9s and Remedy 9s and of the two its the Remedy in the garage today. The Rail is the choice for now, but dang, not a fan of the 50+ lbs.
EXe is so much fun, and the lower weight makes it feel like a regular MTB. But you definitely get more range and power with the Rail. It’s a hard choice! Totally different ride styles

Thes bikes are amazing at climbing and great for descending. The Rail has more suspension travel, and I was surprised that the heavy weight actually feels good sometimes when descending. BUT the EXe is definitely more fun to ride.
With 14 k for a bike , it must be a joke ......expect to crush down to 5 to 6 k in the coming of 5 years . It is not so high tech and high finance capacity to for manufacturer to build one.......the trend will finally end ....

I'm an older rider starting back after a 10 year break. This bike exceeds my capabilities and has been easy to get comfortable riding. I'm mostly on easy trails with almost no street riding and have not been disappointed with the performance of the bike. My fitness level is far below what I previously rode with and because of that the mileage is going on the bike slowly. While I'm losing weight slowly, the bike seems to tolerate my 220 pounds just fine. The bike has been used by several family members ranging from 5'5" - 5'9".

who cares what people think lol. The sl turbo is like trail on a full emtb. So if you ride in trail mode.. eco on the full. Which is plenty.

The Fuel EXe has an HPR motor, not a HRP as you stated.
On the website it’s states TQ-HPR50 eBike Motor. HRP stands for Harmonic Pin Ring
