- On today's episode we discuss the Filmi Jodi of Amar Singh Chamkila and his singing partner and wife Amarjot. This Netflix biopic is a meeting of three genius minds: director Imtiaz Ali, music composer A R Rahman and actor/singer Diljit Dosanjh.
Tell us:
• Do you like biopics in general?
• What did you think of Chamkila?
• Were you familiar with Chamkila before watching the movie?
• How do you feel about Imtiaz Ali movies?
• Do you also love Pitu's favorite Diljit Dosangh song? • Diljit Dosanjh | Raat ...
We stay pretty on track in this one, but a few other films pop up briefly: Socha Na Tha, Jab We Met, Jab Harry Met Sejal, Rockstar, and Crew.

The ambiance of rural/semi rural Punjab is so well depicted. Whoever advised Imtiaz on it did a great job.
Yes, so fantastic!!! I loved how rustic and real it was! So refreshing to see. - Pitu
Beth is so spot on when she says that script is very good. I loved the movie because of the warmth with which Chamkila is portrayed.
Yay! The Ladies are back! I do agree with you all about biopics being hit or miss because it is the same way with me. With the release of this movie and the knowledge that it is one, I might not watch it, however, I have been inspired by it to learn more about Amar Singh Chamkila's music and life. The lack of the police's activity in trying the find the culprit most definitely has to do with the fact that ASC was a Dalit Sikh. And his caste might be a big reason he was murdered as well which is a thought that makes me angry. Nevertheless, reading about his interesting life is really fun. And I'll absolutely check out Diljit Dosanjh's music out. I am a massive lover of folk music, so ASC is great to get into.
Yay thanks for the comment and do watch the film - it's really entertaining. My favorite DD songs are - Lambadgni, raat di gedi, lover, jatt paida hoya bas chhaun vaaste. He is such a fab singer! Very sad to hear that his caste may have been the reason. The scene where he says "main chamaar hoon" made me so angry on hai behalf. I wanted to slap the other guy. - Pitu
@@filmiladies I will give it a try. During your explanation of the pushback ASC faced, I was reminded of Southern American culture here where I am from was the reaction to Blues/Jazz musicians back in the day, like 1910's-30's. There were pastors and ministers, sometimes still are, calling the Blues/Jazz the devils music because it depicted more taboo subjects (Robert Johnson, Son House, Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith, etc.) However, the pastors were most likely jealous that the money that was not going in the collection plate for the pastor to use was going to the blues musicians instead. Thank you for the song recommendations!!!!
@@bitesofbread Oh yes, I have heard that. - Pitu
@@bitesofbread My music perspective of censorship vs vulgarity was from hip hop/rap/rock/heavy metal. So I really enjoyed and appreciated how the movie showed the hypocrisy.
The struggle to get the bodies home. The fear that associating with Chamkila would rain wrath on them as well. All this was very real. The situation with terrorists was much much worse. I remember being fearful of passing too close to a VIP motorcade, of Shawl clad men(terrorists carried guns inside a shawl). There were instances where men pretending to be terrorists extorted money.
Sounds absolutely harrowing. Thank you for your comments, I'm greatly enjoying reading them! - Pitu
🙌 I am so happy that you guys watched and reviewed this!!! I wanted to hear a discussion about it as soon as I finished watching it!!! Parineeti looked GORGEOUS and I loved that Chamkila fell in love with her...until we learn about him already being married 😖
I had watched the Shahid and Kriti robot movie right before this one and was happy that another body type other than super skinny was being portrayed as sexy. So I was so 🤬when we learn he was already married and would do anything for his career.
I didn't get distracted by Parineeti's performance. I thought that Amarjot was a quiet woman who followed the rules of patriarchy and didn't want to bring attention to herself because of the racy lyrics.
🤷♀
I will definitely be watching this one again!
Don't hold it against me but I like Jab Harry Met Sejal
🏃♀
🤭Hey, we all like what we like. As long as we do it thoughtfully, then I can't judge! Also I love Ajooba, so....
Unfortunately I've already read a quote of Parineeti's saying she looked "her worst" in this movie and I was like girrrl. Oh I want to watch that robot movie, it's on my list. Did you see Crew? I love that Tabu and Bebo also have different body types. Bahhaa what do you like about When Harry Met Sejal? - Pitu
@@filmiladies Her worst???!!! Pfft! What I liked about When Harry Met Sejal is SRK, lol. That's enough for me
@@bethwatkins6163 Oh, I haven't seen that one. I haven't seen AB's Don either, so I will try to do a double feature soon.
@@merlange11 He was hot as usual. I liked the scene of sad srk eating a sad looking sandwich but everyone knows sad srk is my jam. 🤣 - Pitu
I was living so close to this place but have absolutely no recollection of any talk of Chamkila being shot dead. I wasn’t really interested in the kind of songs Chamkila sang. We called them truckers songs and gave them a wide berth. The cassettes were low quality and sold for rs.10 or something. In this I identified with the DSP who is pissed at being put on Chamkila duty. At one point he yells- am I a villager? Am I a truck driver? Why would I know about him?
Ahh gotcha. A bit of David Dhawan/Govinda "A aa ee uu uu oooh" vibes. - Pitu
Multiple marriages were not uncommon in Punjab. Their legality was rarely challenged. As long as the man could care for them no one complained.
Ahh interesting. - Pitu
That's good context to have! Thanks!
