I've been hearing that people think the farm pride chicken feed company might have cut corners to try and keep prices down and in doing so has caused the chickens to stop laying eggs. As you said, I doubt that commercial farms are using tractor supply's feed so this is probably only affecting the small farms and homesteads.
I also heard the bird flu is responsible for the death of millions of chickens and that's why the shortage/price increase in the store bought eggs.

Wild guess - Could be the Purina or whoever are not putting the same minerals in their mix as the other companies are. So lack of certain minerals are making a difference. My grandmother's chicken feed & what we fed our chickens back in the '50s/'60s looked like grains (corn, millet, etc) & sunflower seeds Nowadays it looks totally different. We had no problems with their egglaying services (white leghorns, rhode island reds & & )

@@markp5506 Yes, I know this. However, I want people to investigate for themselves. What corporation owns Purina? What corporation owns Cal-Maine the largest egg farm in the country? Is it a coincidence that both are under the same corporation?

    • @NonexistentHomestead
      @NonexistentHomestead Год назад +1

@@lorainewhite727 Yes, it could be that they just reduced the minerals or amount of protein in their feed. We need an independent lab to analyze the feed to determine for sure. The question I have though is if the feed is lacking, was it done as a cost cutting measure or could there be a more nefarious reason.
We must keep in mind that a lot of the people complaining about their hens not laying as much are first time backyard/homestead chicken farmers. Hens will naturally decrease their laying activity due to the shorter daylight hours and the cold of winter. Mine have significantly decreased and I don't use a Purina feed. The local feed I do have out for them barely gets touched as there is plenty for them to eat in the yard.

We were watching a video from a woman who's been researching what's going on. It took her awhile to get to the bottom of things, but she finely found some answers.
You know how large corporations are interconnected with OTHER corporations. Many holding controlling interests in other companies, that can go several layers deep. (They DO that to end run anti-monopoly laws.)
Well she discovered that right before the laying issues cropped up, a subsidiary of Purina became associated with some of the largest egg producing conglomerations, none of which are seeming to have laying problems. Their smaller COMPETITORS however ARE having laying issues.
Feed manufactured by Purina and it's subsidiaries is distributed by MANY outlets under many brand names. Is it possible one of those outlets is Tractor Supply?
There doesn't seem to be any issue with feed sold under the Purina brand name. But then you would EXPECT a large conglomerate like Ralston Purina would take all necessary precautions to prevent such issues from being associated with their OWN flagship brand, that would be bad for the bottom line.

Kevin, what the problem is with TSC is that Producer's Pride and another of those unnamed layer feeds, are low on a few nutrients that are suppose to be in the feed. The missing nutrients are Lycine, Metheolow9, and cystine. What has happened, is when people were feeding the lacking feed, that suddenly their quail or chickens stopped laying, even though they were getting plenty of feed, water, and lights. The way to supplement the feed, is to cook rice and lentils together. When it cools, you offer it up to your birds, and within 2 or 3 days, they start laying again. Some have said that some of those minerals came from a factory in Germany, that burned to the ground. Love seeing you all. Blessings. Oh, and yes, I am still raising quail, thanks to you.

She said one chicken escaped and was out eating free range and started laying eggs again, so they let them ALL OUT to free range and now they are all laying again. She also said none of them will TOUCH the feed. She didn’t say where the feed was from but that others said it must be the food they were feeding them making them stop laying because they all those who had them go free range started laying again.

There are so many stories going around about the shortage of eggs. I have heard there was a major loss of laying hens, that there was many farms that closed, and I heard about the tractor supply issue. Good luck in finding out what is really going on. Since I posted the price of eggs here in Michigan they have gone up from under 4.00 to over 6.00 per dozen. I can only hope that when the hens start laying in the lighter days we see the price come down. I remember not to long ago breakfast was a cheap way to eat. Memories.

I heard there’s a shortage because a lot of chickens have died from the avian flu. Also I heard that whoever is producing the feed has cut back on one of the additives to cut costs and that has affected the egg production. At Trader Joe’s they were completely out of eggs a few times. I bought a 20 egg flat from Smart and final and it was $13.20

The Bird FLU has something to do with the current egg and chicken prices as well as many Chicken houses and Processing plants that have been destroyed by fire last year. I have seen many complain about not getting any eggs, not a reduction in eggs - no eggs. People who free range their chickens have had no issues, not that I read about anyway. I live in town and will be getting chickens and they will be penned up due to Eagles, Hawks, Skunks, Opossums and stray cats, so I will be mixing my own food for them, plus table scraps.

Kevin Off Grid with Doug and Stacey did a video about it, and it's very informative. Apparently he had been hearing the same thing and from what my understanding of it is this. Producers Pride is their store brand and supposedly whoever makes it either changed their formula or is actively putting something in it to cause the chickens to stop laying. Now this is for backyard, homesteads, and small farms that have small flocks. I just got hens this past March and I don't use that brand, just because other brands have more variety of grains in them even though the Producers Pride is cheaper. In the video from Doug and Stacey they show how they mix their own grains and seeds to feed their chickens. I don't know if there's any truth to this but why not just change brands? Some say they have and their chickens started laying again. If this is a conspiracy to stop us from having our own hens and eggs, why would all the other producers do it and why would they want to lose all that money they're making? I just don't think it's true. My hens don't eat that much of their layer feed anyway. They like their scratch grains and blackoil sunflower seed, and kitchen scraps. I also give them a few cabbages a week, Kale and Spinach just because I live in town and mine can't free range. I give them meat scraps and fat that I trim off my meat.

I just left the same message. These people are actually saying that they put something in the feed to drive up the cost of eggs... To me that could be considered deformation or something... And if Tractor Supply losses customers because of this they could take action. Plus I don't think they make that food I think Purina makes it so that would be too big companies coming after them... My advice to Kevin was to stay as far away from that discussion as possible...

If Tractor Supply sued, the defense would be allowed discovery that TS might not want exposed. Not to mention the defense would test the chicken feed. I don't think they have a leg to sue on. They could claim ignorance but that's about it. It would be up to the defense to claim they knew.

I had egg layers for years and ducks. Chickens need 2 to 3 times the amount of feed as they do during the summer. Second and most important, putt a light in the coup to wake the birds up at 530 am and don't shut the light off until 9 pm. I never lost production of eggs with this method. My layers produced as many eggs during the summer as they did during the winter. Mind you, I lived in Northern Michigan at the time. Off grid. It easy

In the past few video's, I've seen her walking stiff and slightly limping. She's awfully young for that. It might be the cold. It might be she overexerts herself, but it is concerning. For reference, I've been a dog trainer for about 40 years now. I've seen a lot of dogs and dealt with many with skeletal issues.

That is why I love your channel,, your not one of the sheep. I follow several people, and it seems that one person buys a tractor and everyone buys a tractor, someone buys a skid steer and everyone buys a skid steer, and they say it's a gamechanger. But now you have to buy the attachments to go with it, somebody buys an mini-excavator and then you know the drill, guess what everyone wants. I guess that that is ok if you are one of those channels with over a million subs. Heck I guess they don't know that you can rent a piece of equipment when needed for an odd job or two.
Give your family a big hug and tell Rachel we are thinking of her.

    Hello Kevin
We mix our own feed. (I’m allergic to shellfish and it’s common enough to find oyster shells in layer feeds - we’ve never bought it).
Our small flock went through a period of almost no laying at all through the end of November and all of December. It was overcast a lot, very cold and our hens were molting.
Longer days, new feathers and eggs are being laid daily, again.
We free range and offer the hand blended feed, kitchen scraps, various greens, and other delicious offerings.
I think the Avian flu has taken a toll.
Send prayers to Rachel and you all.
    Blessings ❤
