I personally think it's a good thing that you've allowed the cats & dogs to interact with one another. Your cats are part of the farm & serve a purpose. The dogs will protect them just like they will the goats. They know they're not enemies & won't hurt the goats. If somebody wants to tell you've done it wrong then I would tell them to mind their own business, it's your farm.

Roxanna I agree with you up to one point. Telling people to mind their own business when a post or video is up does nothing to teach people. It only makes them defensive. Addressing the misinformation as was done with this video is the best way to go. If the person still refuses to see the truth, well you did your best to educate and leave it at that. I watch a number of channels like this one. They teach city people, some that can't tell a baby chick from a baby duck, what it takes to raise farm animals. And for all the people who don't eat meat, well none of these animals would be around because they would not be needed . And PLEASE understand that comment was not meant to judge your choices of Lifestyle. What we choose to eat is our own business.

LGDs have strong sense of duty, especially ours. Our Beau learned quickly who belongs and who doesn't. They use the least force needed to push cats or strays out of the area and livestock they protect. Beau prefers kitties to stay out of the pasture, but understand our kitties have free range. Your dogs are being true to breed. Perfect relationships. Thanks for educating people.

I lived on a farm for most of my life and we always had cats and dogs that were besties. Most of the other animals tolerated the cats, by having the cats around all the time we never had to break up a fight. In fact we had a dog my dad called tiny, it was a cross between a German shepherd and Saint Bernard. BIG dog! The cats rode its back and slept with him, he protected my younger brother and we never had salesman cuz tiny looked in the car window, they never got out of their car. Tiny was an awesome dog. Thank you for today’s vlog, God bless!

I’ve never known farm dogs and farm cats to fight each other. I grew up on a farm and we always had several dogs and at least one barn cat. Only trouble we had was when our old senile female dog believed the cat’s kittens belonged to her and she would “kidnap” them and try to nurse them. The cat would patiently come over and retrieve her babies. No confrontation necessary!

  • @Andrea_J
    @Andrea_J 2 года назад +25

When I lived on a farm I taught my dogs to leave the kittens and later baby chicks alone, telling them they were "mammas babies" when the dogs first were introduced to the new additions. It worked great. The dogs would bring me rodents the killed as well as the cats bringing their gifts. Later on we found one of the cats sleeping on top of our doberman and one red hen would lay her eggs in the dog bed in our garage! Never lost any chicks to our dogs or cats but red tailed hawks would take them if they didn't run for cover fast enough.

You are so right. I taught my dog to go after the many many pigeons that's steal the food from my animals. It gets very expensive and pigeons can bring disease to my animals. All my dogs, I have 60 years of raising animals, are taught the same thing" Mamma's babies". They know the difference. It works like a charm. Every once and awhile you come across an odd animal that refuses to know it's place on a farm or ranch. For the good of many and safety for family ones needs to go. There are so many good, safe animals that need good homes, why keep one that is dangerous? It doesn't make sense. Some people need to realize this.

From what I learned as a kid growing up on a farm in Texas. Every animal has a job to do, and every animal knows who and who doesn't belong. Farm cats and LGD'S being friends is not a bad thing. Its all part of the farms eco system. If the system can not work together it falls apart. Awesome job with your animals dont change anything.

The people saying that LGDs would tear up the cats obviously know less than nothing about Livestock guardian dogs. LDGs are designed to protect their property and this includes livestock, other pets, etc. They are NOT herding dogs and as such they lack the "prey drive" of herding dog breeds that makes even a poorly trained border collie a potential danger to cats.

Our dog herded cows but they learned to live well with barn cats. Thank heaven for those cats. Bad to lift a hay bale and have a rodent nest.

I think it is great that they all get along. We always had farm cats outside with our dogs. They both know what their job is and it makes it easier if they all can get along. Cats don’t just hunt outside of fences. They hunt all over the property so if they are in the pen with the dog and are hunting it’s good the dog knows they are not a threat. Have a great day Kevin!

I think the people saying these negative things do not know how the animal world works and have never had both together. At one point in my life I had a cat that had a friend that was a mouse she found and they became best friends. They would sleep, eat, play together the cat loved that mouse I did not! I think you should run YOUR farm YOUR way. I understand how in some cases it would not be good to have dogs and cats living together, but in your case I think it is a good idea. The cats are going to get in with the goats and you wouldn't want the dogs to hurt them because of that. Your dogs need to know and protect the farm "animals" that includes the cats. You are going to get haters and the know-it-alls. But every farm/ranch/homestead is run differently. You guys are doing a great job and should keep up the good work.

Schmiegel is correct spelling & is very German. While I know it is unusual & you spelled it the way it sounds to you, but being a Schmiegel myself, I learned to spell it at a very young age.

Our Golden Retriever and our cats slept together. He would bark and chase away stray cats. He protected our son by chasing away a coyote who was sleeping in a bush. He protected our family, cats, and property. Yet he was gentle and friendly with friends and children. A very intelligent dog who learned quickly!

Our cats and dog always were together and slept together in the barn. We never had an issue it's not like cartoons where they don't get along. Lol
    Merry Christmas!

Your Farm 🚜 is yours not anyone else's to say what you can or can't do or think. I abhor those who think they may know more about your business and Farm than you do. For shame on them. I appreciate your videos and your right to do as you will in your world..
I think whatever you decide to do on your Farm is the right thing for you, you know perfectly well what the exact process of living is on your property and who should or shouldn't be on it and when and why. Honestly people who don't live your life should just keep their trap shut, and that is just that. Much love too y'all and Many blessings...

Dogs and cats can coexist in a good way. My Labrador would often wrestle with the cat but the cat was usually the one to instigate. He would stalk around her then leap up and put her in a headlock. It was funny to watch! She was with that cat her whole life. She knew he was family. Sorry you have to deal with trolls. You are a concsciencous farmer. You give all your animals a healthy and happy life. Appreciate that about HHF. Best wishes!

In my opinion you have done the right thing. Your cats are working farm animals as well as pets. Love when you do a video like this because we get to feel like a part of the farm. God bless you from Michigan ❤️

Kevin they are leaving you a gift, in their mind they are taking care of you, providing for you. Now, I have one dog and 2 cats that live with me in the house and they play together and keep each other company, no fights. Your guard dogs know the difference between friendly animals and predators. Sometimes people just dumb found me by the things they say or think 💭 . ❤️🇺🇸

We had one cat that would drop off this rat to our back door. My dad would throw it over the back fence. The cat brought back that same rat until my Dad got smart enough to throw the rat into the trash bin. He then accepted the cats gifts and promptly threw them in the trash! Lol.

We have the same experience with our LGDs and cats. We find our cats or kittens either on top of or under the dogs depending on the weather. I have seen the cats walk up to the dogs and beg for grooming.

That is funny to hear. I have lived on the farm and we always had farm cats and guard dogs together with no issue. They work as a team. The dogs will help protect their farm cats. Humans have a role in dog's training on what is a friend or what is allowed on the farm. That is the same for dogs that guard a person or a family. If a dog is over protective they need training to allow what the owner wants around.

    Cats and LGD are fine
I raised them for over 30 years and never had problems.
They know the ones that belong. And will chance off those that don’t.
You are doing fine with them keep up the good work

Leeske just wants Gracie to play with him like Smeegle. He got too close once and she hissed and spit at him. You can see Leeske jump back. I have a LGD (French Pyrenees/Great Pyrenees/Anatolian) that was 10 months when I got him. I also have 3 cats, who are getting up in age (8 yrs old). One is stubbornly defiant with Marley. Once hiss and swipe (it connected), and Marley leaves all the cats alone. My other LGD was dumped when she was about 18 months old, and I think is Great Pyr/Lab. I had more issues with her and the chickens (black/whites, but not reds), with her Lab characteristics kicking in. But not with my cats. Now, when the feral tom cat comes prowling, they both go after him. So far, he's been lucky and has climbed trees or run off to safety. Of the 3 cats, one is extremely lazy, one is an opportunistic hunter, and one is a true hunter. When I have to replace the cats, I will probably contact the group that places semi-feral barn cats on farms.

I don't see no problems having cat's and Dog's interaction they don't hurt each other I think it's a good thing they both have a job on the farm to do and they both like to have a friend to play with 👍.

I think it’s awesome that you raise them together!! I’m a firm believer that you can make pretty much any animals get along with each other if you raise them together and teach them to get along!! I’ve got cattle dogs that absolutely love my cat, he’s actually the boss of both of them! I’ve seen several people who raised their livestock guardian dogs to get along with chickens too!! So anything is possible!! I mean you are proof!! ❤️❤️❤️

I think it’s great that you teach the cats and the dogs to get along with each other….all animals needs to know who belongs and who doesn’t….especially if some animals has free range of the property..

I think it's better to allow the dogs and cats to interact. You can't always keep cats out of the pasture. They go out there hunting so they need that connection with the LGD. But either way it's your place and you can do whatever works for you. GOD BLESS Y'ALL.

I’m glad to see your guard dogs and barn cats get along. Team work help to keep the varmints and predators on your land down and away from your farm animals. They have bonded and will have each other backs. Don’t listen to the naysayers.
