    1. Get high levels of ketones
    2. Get loads of DHA from whole foods (90% of the fat in the brain is DHA)
    3. Get enough sleep
    4. Try to go to sleep in a fasted state
    5. Increase the monounsaturated/saturated ratio
    6. Add curcumin or turmeric to everything
    7. Lithium (low dose nootropic supplement)

    While raising our five children, there was a yellow halo on the tiles around our stove from using turmeric. As owners of a health food store we purchased organic turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, paprika, nutritional yeast and peppercorns by the pound. Heavily influenced by Indian culture when I lived in British Columbia we both ate Indian food and used turmeric in everything. I won't brag, by our kids ended up pretty well mentally endowed.

    I am living with a neurological condition, and can attest to the fact that higher ketones are better for the damaged brain. It's important to check your ketone levels whenever you're feeling your best as your optimal ketone levels are unique to your physiology. I stopped keto because I lost my appetite and became too skinny. Since I'm doing keto for my brain health and not weight loss, I have to do it differently. This video is helpful. I'm getting back on keto as my pain,spasms and inflammation have increased since stopping.

      To so many of us. It was never about weight loss. I stated almost a decade ago. Not keto. But reading going gluten free and stuff. Keto for almost 2 years now. It will clear your ADHD but watch about the magnesium potassium deficiency and about salts. It's very important with brain problems to do those and. FAST. there's a lot of evidence and I am also I verified example. Gut biome has massive consequences on your brain. Massive. I'd start there if I were me back in 2005. Extremely sick not getting out of bed. Not working. Vs now. Working 12h minimum lifting reading smiling and socialising all of which in complete relaxation. And I used to get so nervous anxious around people. I can't be sure because there were studies that linked ahdh to other causes but it will work. Trust me it will work. The problem is this. It took me 3 tries to do keto. A year almost overall. Main mistakes only animal fat. No. Plant fat is 75% of the fat I eat. Mostly plant fat had to be. Mistake 2 not drinking good quality water with salt. I use 4 types of salt black pink sea and KCI. It's all obtained in accordance to organic procedures. Can't get Redmin Real Salt. There's isn't much truly organic food or stuff that comes from the US. It's hard to get organic micronutrients from there. Didn't find any American grown food that's organic. Had potatoes once from the states they tasted like parsley. Wierd. I'd like that RealSalt because they mine it from a very deep source. The shit we did to the soil and water didn't get there yet.

      @@ArdelleVision Plants are crucial. Depends on what I want to do. Meat should be rare. I eat meat 4 times a week. Not much. But I also eat 2 eggs daily. Plants are very strong subject. Depending on your health the state of your diet before. The composition changes. Cauliflower and broccoli are great. Look even legumes that aren't overall great if you eat a bit of them now and them it will be ok. You need to find out which plants do what. Thomas has all the info you need. Stay away from grains. They have a role to play but it's very difficult to know which when and how much. Wheat will make you bloat probably but it may also like my girlfriend cause dehydration. Organic wheat vs commercial wheat is completely not the same. But still gluten more than once a month for me is not great. I bloat and feel down when I est too much of it. But a lack of carbs my cause sleep loss low energy. Carbohydrates are in everything. Refined concentrated gluten from wheat is however not a carbohydrate as nature intended because it's concentration in food is thousands higher than in nature. So you will have to sides here always. Commercially grown vs organic. The organic part is what you need but the commercial will be tempting in pricing availability and convenience. Those are however the 3 main factors that destroyed our food. So I just don't use them as excuses. A rule of thumb if you can't find organic avocados don't get any. Do a cycle do a week off avocados. Do a week off everything you eat. If no food is available at all. Fast

      Very good question... here's what you have to think about: the body isn't an homogenous blob inside... it can compartment... the brain is separate from skeletal muscles so mTOR can be inhibited in the brain while at the same time it's being activated in the muscles! Exercise has different effects on mTOR in brain and muscles!

All I have so far is experience and blood sugar readings which are finally under control. My memory is also improved, and keto might be helping, but I also practice a number of different methods for improving memory as well, so I can’t really give keto all the credit for that either.

      No one can answer that specifically. It has more to do with your overall health and type of nutrition you had. Start 16/8 go weeks like that. See what happens. Remember to drink water with salt of you do ketoIF. Not table salt. Get Himalayan pink it's good for a starter. And not that expensive besides. It's a teaspoon per 1L of water flat teaspoon. So not that much. A fat adapted person will get into ketosis very fast because the body knows. A shift from standard diet to keto for a woman will be long. 2 weeks some say months versus several days for a guy. Sorry but that's just nature.

      @@benk7254 Why the focus on animal sources? What about olive oil, avocado oil, or things like macadamia nuts? To more directly answer your question, ghee has the best animal fat profile (excluding fish) in that it's rich in micronutrients, probiotics, and has among the highest smoke points. Since I can't have too much saturated fats (ApoE4 status), my go-to for high calories are macadamia nuts and olive oil-based foods. So much you can do with the macadamia, and they are a special nut in that they have almost no Omega-6 or phytates. Olive-oil mayo is also incredible. Thomas turned me onto making my own and I make a different flavour every day. You should check out his mayo video and try for yourself. Last week I tried adding macadamia nuts but had an immune reaction which triggered inflammation which in turn starts the nerve damage and other cidp symptoms. I'm hoping that the autoimmune reactions are more of a product of gut issues perhaps and not something I'm going to have to deal with for the rest of my life. Before carnivore I was in ketosis for quite a while and saw tremendous reluslts in regards to my disorder. I'm a big veggie fan and started to see how much fiber and carbs I could consume while remaining in ketosis. I noticed that the higher it got, the worse I felt and the more inflammation I would get, even if I was still in ketosis. The plan was to do carnivore for 30 days in order to establish a baseline and reset everything, but I haven't felt this good since I was 13 years old so I've decided to stay on it. I've tweaked the micronutrient profile to where I think I should be by consuming beef, egg yolks, mussels, salmon, beef liver, butter, and salt. I would love to start eating other foods but so far I haven't had any luck when introducing new foods. Hopefully it's just a matter of time.

      @@benk7254 Dear Ben, I'm sorry to hear that. While I do hope that you'll be able to diversify your diet (there was a time recently when I went Mediterranean-carnivore, basically litres of olive oil and fish for my own issues) do what works for now and just continue to occasionally test your limits. I'm under the impression personally that carnivore forever is not ideal for the vast majority of people. Furthermore, while it might hep with symptom management and, again, you should do what works for you, the more you can support your microbiome the better. For this, ghee might be great, but you don't want to rely solely on ghee. If you can do dairy, I'd also suggest goat's cheese and buffalo milk cheese. Both of these have no A1 casein, which gets converted into an opioid in the gut and can cause GI distress (cow's milk cheeses tend to have A1). But also, goat's cheese etc it's goaty flavour from caprylic acid (c8 MCT) and buffalo milk has 10% fat, as compared to cow's milk 3-4% fat. Buffalo mozzarella (thought I can no longer have it myself) is delicious. Would you be able to tolerate olive oil or other high MUFA oils, like avocado oil or hazelnut oil (rather than the whole food). If so, I can formulate some snack ideas for you that are zero carb and might better support your gut.

      Algae oil/supplements. You CAN'T do land sources of Omega-3 (sorry the keto life) because they only contain ALA Omega-3, which doesn't covert well into DHA in the body (about 3% conversion). The algae are where the krill/salmon etc. get the DHA because they can't make it themselves. So go for algae!
      Secondarily, turmeric increases the expression of two genes involved in ALA to DHA conversion. So, when you do have land-sources of Omega-3, go for adding curcumin/tumeric (with fats and black pepper) along with them. Still, algae oil is best for the above reasons and because of something called Astaxanthin, but that's a whole different rabbit hole.

    When you say that serotonin travels from the gut to the brain, are you saying that the serotonin produced in the gut travels to the brain where it is used in ways that affect mood? People talk about serotonin in the gut, but I worry that this business about serotonin traveling to and, by implication, being directly used in the brain is a gross error and mischaracterization.

    • @nicknorwitzPhD
      @nicknorwitzPhD 5 лет назад

      No, you're right. 5-HT itself doesn't cross the BBB. There is nuance though since what we eat affect serotonin precursor transport into the brain (tryptophan has different transport mechanisms than other large neutral amino acids, insulin impacts these ratios and transport mechanisms, etc.)... would be too much for this video.

    • @ondrejkubesa
      @ondrejkubesa 5 лет назад

      Yes... this, at the beginning, striked me too.. absolut nonsese.. since serotonine can't pass the blood-brain barrier... most importantly.. the remaining 10 % of the serotoine is produced by brain for it's own use...

  • @miketuttlesmusic

    I’m confused. We’re told in other TDL videos that the brain needs glucose for fuel, even if the rest of the body is fat-adapted and burning ketones. Now this says the brain will prioritize ketones (6-fold) and reduce glucose oxidation in the brain. What am I missing?

    • @ThomasDeLauerOfficial
      @ThomasDeLauerOfficial  5 лет назад

      Not all cells use glucose. So depends what part of the brain

    • @nicknorwitzPhD
      @nicknorwitzPhD 5 лет назад +1

      6-fold increase doesn't cover all the brains' needs. The brain needs a minimum of about 30% of fuel from glucose. When ketones are around, it will move closer to this 30% number, but won't drop below it.

    • @katerinailievska5673
      @katerinailievska5673 5 лет назад

      I think that's why we need carbs, but complex ones, they will turn into glucose, so that the brain can use it. Because the brain needs glucose. These carbs will not spike the blood sugar because they will absorb over a period of time. So, I think we should be eating carbs, but small amounts of carbs with a low glycemic index (beans, whole unprocessed grains).

    • @nicknorwitzPhD
      @nicknorwitzPhD 5 лет назад +1

      @@katerinailievska5673 @Mike Tuttle Nope! Your brain needs glucose but this DOES NOT mean you need to eat carbs. There are essential amino acids, essential fats, but NO such things as essential carbs. This is because your body can make all the glucose it needs from a process called gluconeogenesis in your liver. It does this by using the backbones of fats (glycerol), alanine, and lactate as precursors for glucose. As a fun aside, it's actually the lactate, not glucose, that neutrons mostly use as fuel (complicated... has to do with astrocyte neutron lactate shuttle and a bunch of nerdy stuff). Bottom line... you DONT need to eat carbs for the brain.

    • @nicknorwitzPhD
      @nicknorwitzPhD 5 лет назад

      You're right, but there is nuance... (1) gut activate affects serotonin precursor transport into the brain. For example, tryptophan (serotonin precursor) has a different transport mechanism into brain than other large neutral amino acids and the ratios of these competitive substrates are affected by insulin and what we eat. (2) Further, gut activity affects regional serotonin production in the brain via vagus. To much nuance for most people for this video.
