I dont think its as simple as just weight loss.
I had depression and anxiety and I was never overweight and I did sports all my life.
I too also felt that keto/carnivore improved my mood and normalize my anxiety. As of now I am cycling on/off of carnivore diet.
Its not a be all end all but its definitely something everyone should try if they suffer from depression.

And another thing not to be fooled about which Thomas will never talk about is the effect of food on your body. I had to go carnivore as a last resort for my lower G.I. issues. And my joint issues. And what I found out is vegetables were causing me so much information. At 62 and 63 I was feeling like a 75-year-old person. Getting vegetables out of my life saved me. I no longer have the stiff sore body in the morning. I don’t crawl out of bed anymore. I don’t sit for an length of time and I have a hard time walking. Yes I still do have a left hip issue, but that’s pretty much from my previous job of 46 years. Also spices and melted fat were causing me lower G.I. issues. Nuts were causing me lower G.I. issues. I can only use salt and maybe a little bit of garlic. If I want to have a peaceful morning, I will eat meat eggs and that’s it. Tweak your diet to fit your needs.

I’ll watch this as my daughter was involved in an accident which left her with a TBI. I went against the grain of the hospital and put her on a Keto diet. I did add certain supplements and some variations. She was reasonably Keto/low carb before but as a teenager relaxed) hospital said she would be in there for months, she was home 4 weeks later! Unfortunately as she recovered and went back into friendships and society her food changed to her peers because she is adamant not to be “different” now as she does have some damage. The changes are so apparent before the accident, after and Keto to now!

Depends on who you talk to. I consider myself low carb. But others have told me I am actually keto. I still think I am low carb.
If you look at some of these rigged studies that claim they are comparing low carb to a regular diet, the one had low carb is 150 and the normal as 170. One study had 250 as low carb. Normal as 300.
I get somewhere between 30 and 50 carbs most days. I always assumed keto was under 20 carbs. But others claim under 50.
I have days where I go up to maybe 70. Very rare. When my husband goes away I am more carnivore as it is really the easiest. Tend to do big projects when he is away, so want easy cooking.
The problem is they have not set rules about what is what is what. It is why Ad vent ist backed studies can cheat like they do.

while i (31m) did keto on and off over a few years, i developed multiple sclerosis and lost my right eye vision and had back pain with depression. after changing to a carnivore diet (zero carb most months) i found pastuerized milk and wheat to cause my MS to flare up the most, usually apathetic depression for 6+hours. i also find i'm sharper without carbs, that most carb foods made me have less drive. i don't know why and i'm not a scientist but 18months on a carnivore diet, with 0 vegetables, has made my MS heal and give me drive/energy with losing 30+lbs (200>170). i do have 350 total cholesterol but i have zero heart trouble with more stamina than i had as a teen and my resting heartbeat is under 60

Yeah aiming ketocarnivore has improved so much of my energy satiation and health factors, eating beef actually also improved my sleep, and found out it has a natural amount of melatonin in it. But also I did also switch out my led light bulbs with incandescent and my body immediately started feeling the right amount of sleep pressure at the time I needed. I did not realize that the leds in my house we're stressing my body out, but wit was like turning off a stress switch in my body when I swapped them out. I'm kind of wondering now if this is why so many people and their kids are so dependent on melatonin. Other good ones before trying carnivore and switching to incandescents, was earthing while sleeping and turning off the WiFi and putting the phones on airplane mode. It all contributes in some way though.

I love the analogy of calorie quality to how you budget your money. If you make enough $ to cover all your necessary expenses (eat the proper amount of calories) but then turn around and spend all that money on a new shoe wardrobe instead or rent and utilities, and end up getting evicted in the process, it IS going to matter. My mom always felt the Dr Atkin's diet had something to do with his heart attack (he had high blood pressure & was under extreme stress too). The Keto today is so much more informed and balanced. You do have to be informed and stay hydrated tho, bc my brother had a sudden onset heart issue bc his electrlytes were too low. He's fine. I like the low carb bc I'm diabetic and I can actually get satisfied. I couldn't understand before how I could eat sooo much food abd still be hungry. The diabetes doesn't allow my body to be fed well which kept me hungry. Find all the foods that are considered keto but are inflammatory and eat anti inflammatory foods. So far a high meat to veggie diet is the one that works for me. Have patience with it it might take 3 to 6 months or longer for your body to heal. If it doesn’t work then change it up, you might need to do a longer fasting and then start eating. If you decide to do fasting drink your electrolytes. Choose something that has salt, potassium, magnesium and no sugar. Good luck

Dr. Amen changed my life when I read his book "Making a Good Brain Great." I was going through a deep depression and it was a clear stepping stone. I went from a highly processed ramen and wheat rich diet that was killing my body and my brain to eating oats with berries, salmon and greens. It was a definite stepping stone, now I'm leaning more keto carnivore, but it really helped guide me out of the junkatarian reality that our world is swimming in. I mean drowning in. The thing I like about carnivore now. Is the complete satiation, energy levels and sleep, apparently there is a natural level of melatonin in beef and my body's been feeling it.

    • @Gio-sx7kt
      @Gio-sx7kt 9 месяцев назад +1

Also what I like about carnivore too is the not feeling mentally pulled by the fake "keto" products put out to the market that are often really just junk. I also don't really have to do nearly as much label reading, just enough to know if there are any dyes or added sugars really. But it's relaxing not having to focus so much energy and attention on label reading all the things on the shelf.

I grew up with a mother who was the only fat kid in her family. She was teased and tormented unmercifully.
She has been fighting obesity her entire life. I watched her stay obese on that healthy shredded wheat, banana, oatmeal, etc. The 80s😔
Late in her life she was still over 300lb, bed ridden from numerous issues & a couple car accidents. Every doctor she ever had failed her. One thing she would never give up, her butter. She refused to use veggie oils, margerines. I'm convinced that's one of the reasons she's pushing 80 & still sharp.
    A few years ago,
I'm now 1000 miles away, raising 4 kids, 3 on the spectrum. I know how beneficial keto can be. I have my own story, I beg her to go keto.
I had to keep it simple. No grains, love your veggies, your meats, add butter to your coffee. She's a religious faster, so I encouraged her to incorporate butter coffee into her day.
She dropped over 100lbs in under 2 years with mainly bed ridden exercises of the upper body.
Decades ago my kids were part of Autism studies at the Davis Mind Institute in Davis, CA. I was constantly searching and begging to be referred to a doctor who knew something. No one told me about Dr Amen, who was less than 50 miles from home.
I found him years ago here on RUclips and became absolutely furious. I can only imagine the help he could have been when my kids were young... But not even the Mind Institute, or my ADD pediatrician knew of his work with Autism and ADD.😢
You are still a driving force, Dr Amen❤

One thing about calories in / calories out -- your stomach and intestines digest things differently depending on what you eat first and how much fiber you eat. So, the calorie in/calories expended people should think about how the stomach/intestines work.

Another thing about CICO, you can’t accurately measure calories in (labels can be off +-20%) and it’s impossible to measure calories out. Please explain how you can measure calories out. You would need a bomb calorimeter and be in a lab to measure calories.
Measuring mass in/mass out is a way better means. Watch Bart kays videos where he very much debunks the CICO.

I used to have Hypothyreos, now it has turned in to hyperthyroidism and I'm sensitive to iodine which is unusual. I suspect it may or may not be due to the ketogenic diet but a very stressful part of my life. Ketogenic diet helped me take the problems with ease though. Due to it made me very positive. Even at the emergency room I was happy and chitter chatty although my legs didn't carry me. But I have a hard time to relax and unwind with my thyroid. My blood sugar is pretty ok nowadays anyways. I’m an intermittent faster. I tried a low carb diet recently. It was not as strict as keto, but close. I felt better after the first week and continued to feel good until the 4th week. Over the course of the next week, my ability to sleep got worse every night. It literally wrecked my sleep. I decided that it was too high of a price to pay to continue. I started adding back a few carbs each day and have slowly restored my sleep this past week.
Is this normal? Have you heard of this before? If so, what do you think is my problem? I want the brain and mitochondrial benefits of Keto, but ruining my sleep is a huge problem.

@mommerang: you want the benefits of keto yet you yourself said you didn’t do keto. You just did low carb. Of course you were having trouble sleeping. You were starving your body of it’s drugs (carbs) and not replacing it with anything. Get your carbs below 20 get your fat intake up. Your going to be miserable at first as your body detoxes. Then your going to sleep like a baby and feel better then you ever have.

    • @pat4005
      @pat4005 9 месяцев назад +1

I'd like to add to the thoughtful comment the other person made, was that you CAN avoid feeling miserable in the first week or two by simply intaking enough of the electrolytes!
      Sodium, Potassium and Magnesium.
You can find them pre-mixed (usually in a powdered or crystalline form), that you just mix with water, or capsules, at most grocery or health food stores and online of course, through the usual marketplaces, and vitamin/supplement stores, pharmacies, and Walmart, etc.
I think here on YT, I've seen Dr. Berg has his own as well as a few others who use the ketogenic and carnivore diets.
I need to use them anyway, because I think I just don't absorb well or have enough magnesium, and it is a real game-changer for me!
I mix my own electrolytes in water using a powdered magnesium and add fresh squeezed half of a lemon, then have another glass later. I also drink low sodium V8 juice for the higher Potassium (even though there are some carbs).
I spread both of these things throughout the day.
If you are starting keto (or even low-carb), as you loose the excess water from water-logged tissues and burn fat, you will loose some electrolytes with that water and may feel a little tired, cranky, a little headachy, or light muscle cramps, etc., but all it is, is that you are simply loosing some of the electrolytes, and the simple fix is putting them into the water that you would be drinking anyway, (I like the lemon water - and no added sugar, of course), and drink it throughout the day at least during those first few weeks.
And of course, if you are taking a prescription med for high blood pressure, never take potassium supplements, but I try be sure to get at least the daily minimum through food and the low sodium V8 now, and it's fantastic!
I got my HBP down within the normal range just by making sure I had the electrolytes I needed in the water, and keeping the carbs below 25gm/day.

The successful ones are the ones who didn't overdo it on the animal fats. but at that point having an orange or some whole wheat toast, or some oats or potatoes every now and then isn't going to wreck the protocol, because it's not really the ketones that make it work, at least from a weight loss focus, to curb epilepsy or other things, that's different.

There are two schools of thought in CICO. One looks at nothing but calories. I know a guy like that who sometimes posts on social media and only gets 50-60g of protein daily and usually finishes off with fast food or cookies. Then there's the crowd more into macros and strength training. They'll say you can eat 1,400 of junk calories but then you'll have to make the remaining 800 (or whatever). count. So they'll eat almost nothing but tuna, chicken breast and whey powder to make up protein deficit--and maybe take a fiber supplement. I don't like either one, though the latter crowd makes a little more sense. I find CICO too limiting and find that I cheat too often and berak my calorie limit with late night snacks.
