My Live Techno Modular Setup // Blackbox Live Looping

- The Blackbox by 1010 Music officially has a special place in my heart.
I knew you could easily have a dawless studio setup with one of these in it, but i never really tried to apply it to a live setup. Also using the Launchcontrol XL to midi map the blackbox was the easiest thing i've done in awhile.

Just worked it out. You’re the fukkin Bob Ross of electronic music production. Have a nice day bro. Stay chilled.
Same with you man! thanks for hanging.
hahaha true
Yeah. Ricky has the delivery down. Maybe that's his natural style. But if you listen to all of the most popular eurorack guys they get animated but stay smooth. It's easier to listen longer to smooth rather than grating. I've been working with voices for 25 years. That's my take on it.
"And now we're going to make some happy little techno ..."
@@jameslainchbury6746 oi oi!!!
I love how that video went from "the black box is so cool" to "listen to the sounds I can create with my modular!".
If he didnt show off it wouldnt have been as effective of proving the capabilities of the black box I guess. Its a midi transmitter module
It wasn't meant as an offense. I really love how his videos are made and I like how he gets affected with his modular.
Thats musicans for ya! Just go where the bass is...
@@InkyDaCaT Guilty as charged, I love bass on all music. Recently bought a subwoofer too!

Ricky Tinez on a Boiler Room set. I'd be about that.

@@ritualvhs7518 Exactly!
"They don't care what I'm doing as long as... it's pure fire"
"it gets a bit too melodic...we're doing techno" YES!
Now I am saving up for BlackBox, novation circuit + launch control, DrumBrute impact, MPC One, exact same modules, E-RM Clock, Model Cycles, Digitakt, Digitone, my kid's tuition, my divorce court expenses, dog food, new car, parking lot fine, wifi, TRS cables, weed, papers, more weed, new lighter, Soundcloud pro, apartment rent, toilet paper, face mask, AND NEW RICKY'S HAT😢

It's about time for Ricky to blow up on RUclips. he's actually one that deserves to be big on here. Not only are the videos super fun to watch, but also very informative. commentary is top notch as well.
I'm an in the box producer but I love watching him even though I don't understand what he's saying most of the time
18:23 "and we’re in it, this is it" Stunning work Ricky how you manage to nail the technical presentation with a killer live set, thoroughly modern entertainment 🥇💪🏻🕺
You just convinced me to buy the 1010 blackbox.
Man, this is the kind of tutorials/reviews I really like. No boring reciting of HW features - they really don't matter at all when you don't know how they feel and how they sit in the mix. And this is really fun as jams too - you know, jams instantly become muuch more personal when you comment them like you do.
You rock, keep up doing this!
I definitely recommend a "techno set with swing" - it makes all the difference to how the room reacts, IMHO. That little extra bounce makes people move rather than just listen and stroke their chins ;-)
Agree....agree agree!
At the very least, a little variation can go a long way.
Andrew Lagowski I love to the bounce when the swing kicks in.🙂
Ricky you are an audio wizard sending spells across the web.... what glorious magic boxes you possess! 👍🎶🔊🇬🇧
this video is legendary to me.... the amount of times i come back to listen to this jam again, damn (need more swing techno!)
You’re the king of not wasting time and getting straight into it.
Been using mine for the last couple of months for live techno too; a couple of things for ya:
- stick it on a send/return on a mixer, and you now can sample ANYTHING in a live rig, not just whatever you connect to it on input. I do this with 6 channels on mine. It also means if you're going back to back with a DJ, you can sample whatever they're playing
- take a look at the midi fighter twister, it's a bit smaller than the launch control, and it's a bit more ergonomic, in my opinion
- the granular mode is worth taking a look for chopping up loops/samples into little drones or atmospherics, which make for nice backing tracks in techno. There were a couple of times this track where when too many elements were removed where it sounded "empty".
Cheers! Always glad to see how another live performer uses theirs. I really do wish the sequencer was more a typical grid style per track rather than each sequence sequencing every pad. I don't use one shots because of this.
The launch control does look too big for this, curious how you use your midi fighter with it
@@dangayle Volume on the main layer, filter on the other. Pretty straightforward, but the MIDIFighter is still bigger than the BB. Try just using the BB alone, it's still surprisingly quick.
Tb 303 140bpm acid techno is the most energy loaded techno ever I love it! Greetings from Berlin
Watching your videos made me bought my first synth/gear (Electribe 2 sampler) and return to music after 5 years. Thank you for having such inspiring and fun content.
Just did the same :)
I've got to tell you, you have single-handedly inspired me to build a completely DAWless rig and start doing gigs again. Thanks for the positive vibes and great gear advise. Cheers!
This sounded great - but you loving it was the best part by far.
that pitch layered part in the end was to sick honestly
13:40 Awww damn. I'm lying in bed watching this, but I'm feeling like getting up again to dance
"Dude! I can do this all day!", there is no better definition than this.
I guess this in a live context is totally fire, people dance on the groove and that's it. Modular is a very intriguing instrument when used creatively.
Sooo.. i want to quit producing a month ago, but after i start to watch'n you mate... just thank you.

Thought to myself, let's watch a chill Ricky Tinez while eating breakfast. Now I'm dancing in my kitchen. The acid is fire!!! I'd love to hear a recording of your live set!
Oh Boi, I thought I'd make a funny comment. But shit went from 'oh a cool product' to taking my Bluetooth speaker to the kitchen and waking up my neighbors real quick

Came here for the blackbox but your shoutouts could serve a great samplepack 😂🥸
absolutely love how much fun you're having! 😁 just started my day over here in berlin watching your video and it's nothing but gold. thanks man
Ok Ricky! This particular video has 484 comments so far!! It’s a great video and tutorial and I always enjoy your candid remarks …
But I’ve got a few questions with the XL and detail of its parameters controlling the BB etc.
I do understand the XL is a simple plug and play component but rather than sifting thru 484 comments to see if anyone else has asked a similar questions 🙋🏻♂️ I’ll go right ahead. Maybe a tutorial on specifically the XL and BB? Or share the XL template?
- The pad is it a ‘sample’ or a ‘clip’?
- The XL ‘start’ and ‘stop’ for each pad?
In detail, how did you make it learn that one?
- The ‘Switch Over’ to the other 8 pads?
How was this accomplished again? Require some detail to the ‘menu’ selections your making on the BB as it’s not clear enough!
Thanks Ricky 🙌🏻🖤🙏🏻😌
Its nice to hear someone really enjoying what they are doing with music….its freaking me out ,its dope sick!!!
I just got a Blackbox, and found a better way to configure the Launchcontrol XL to set levels. It enables you to have a level you are happy with when not using the lcxl controller, and then use the faders to adjust down from that level.
1. Use Novation Components to set the lcxl's sliders to have MAX = 0, and then MIN = 127. This does actually work to reverse them!
2. When you do midi learn, set the amount to a negative number, such as -75% or -100%.
This makes it so sliding the fader down from max reduces the volume from the level you've set. It is much more usable that way!
I really hope this helps. Love your work!
The last minute of this video just slapped me around. Love it.
Super sick. With some monitoring on the Eurorack, you can build new sounds and patterns while the black box is kicking out the pre-made sound, bring up the live sound of the palette, jam around, and work back and forth between the two. Tight and inspiring demo.
12 MINS IN WOW, That does it man im opening ableton ( that has just inspired me) btw 100% techno and swing i love that!!!
Thanks for answering that question about the USB/MIDI hub in the blackbox straight away. I've got a Launch Control XL sitting right here and the Blackbox has been on my radar so that's helpful.
MAAAAAAHD! Im literally gonna blow my bank on NE modules this year, so damn fine! You should really come to Europe sometime soon man! :D
Hey Ricky, this isn’t my kind of music but it was very entertaining to see you so giddy over the new setup
your setups are always so good

yesterday i finally pulled the trigger and ordered some modules and a case
im broke now but at least i'll have a modular

TURN BACK!!
This was cool to see how one piece of hardware can complement another to create a solution, love to see more like this.
I’m not much of a techno guy, but that was fun! Hope the gig is even more of a blast than the video 👍🏻
This was a VERY fun watch... loved this jam. I need to build out a little modular synth box like that. That looks way fun.
Every time I look at whether or not to buy the BlackBox, I go to this video and end up just watching the jam. Love the part towards the end when Ricky pitches down a loop, just to end up accidentally doing two more layers of pitch when demonstrating the keyboard, then filtering it up, and boom!
For me this is the most 🔥 vid on the channel. Sick live techno concepts here
This type of Ricky's videos are immortal
Some of that sounded like tracks off of Thomas Bangalter’s Roulé label, really awesome dude!!
I haven’t heard quality like that in a demo ever!
so right. he's really dope.
my man's is straight VIBING
Huge smile on my face
Blackbox makes life so simple. Really fun kit! Thanks for letting the world know. Clips for live looping are awesome
You just sold me on the BlackBox. I was looking at different samplers, and trying to decide, but now I'm quite sure about the BlackBox. Thanks.
Same! Was planning on getting a TR-8S, but I think I'll end up getting that later and going for the black box! Especially for me since it's my first time going DAWless (well 50% DAWless and 50% DAW)
Black box rules
I've been on the fence about the Blackbox for a while, this convinced me to pick one up, and a Launchcontrol
Great video. That blackbox + launch control combo works so well for live capture without losing flow. I'd been wavering on the blackbox but it's back on the list with a new friend.
Whats crazy is im not into techno or house or dance music at all, but I still love your videos, and have learned a lot from them.
Bro! Love watching you get stoked on making. So infectious. Sick. Makes me wanna play live techno! I think I will! Thanks for the great vid and inspiration!
Blackbox looks like a decent MPC recplacement.
Love some techno.
It will be interesting to see how the BB evolves into your work flow.
13:00 Now we're talking. Love that part.
Supadoooopppaaa !!! Ricky 🙌 please an other video : blackbox + sp404 ?
This video made me buy the Blackbox. Really.
Your videos are amazing. You have such a chilled out yet informative way of delivering. I also have been listening to your music on sound cloud and Spotify and honestly your track “El” has been on repeat for the last few days. You da man!!!
Cool Stuff. Great sounds and love the enthusiasm when that groove gets going! Also piqued my interest in the Blackbox which hadn't happened in other videos I've seen.
Love your clips man! love your joy and enthusiasm! big up Ricky!
Came for the BlackBox, stayed for the music! Thanks for the video 🔥
"It's harder, acid techno... so if you're not into that, might want to check out now."
If you checked out, I'm not sure if we can be friends.
This shit isn't hard at all man🤣 trance is the way sorry
I now like techno again. Been a while. You are so fun to watch and listen.
Black box seems pretty rad
Sounds great man, take it, record it and post it dude!
In it to win it!!!!! Oooooh that's right in the groove... Love it.
oh and you ABSOLUTELY should use swing on your techno sets!!!!! sounds amazing, like luke vibert
Yeah, you may as well use the whole kit live, but it’s good to have the back up on the Black Box. Either way, I bet your techno set is lit.
I am a total beginner. I own 1 midi keyboard, a DAW, and a couple vst. You have really inspired me. Some day I hope to get a mini modular system like you have but I am afraid nobody would ever see me again. I hope to see you live some time. Keep up the good work.
"but i’m afraid nobody would ever see me again" hey let them see other people for a while, when they get you back you’ll have more to offer 😁
i can't believe i completely skipped on this video somehow. this is dooooope ma dude. come back to modular plz
Love your channel. When I am looking at gear, you are on of the people who help me decide if something is right for me or not. Just got a BB 1010 and hope to do it justice but also I guess the reason I am writing, is the fact you are having fun exploring things... it's real
LOVE YOUR STUDIO….
everybody say:
aahhh... oohhh!
man, awesome setup! it really brings “performance” to the table. take it to ur live set!
I had wondered about a controller for the BlackBox, and here you are using one...incredible!! While the touch screen is great for programming, I did not want to use if for live play, problem solved!! 1010music BlackBox is the most under-rated sampler on the market...it is one fantastic sampler with an interface that is simple and powerful. It has a short learning curve of only about a week and then you are an expert, sounds great AND has 6 mono outputs or 3 stereo outputs for independent processing. Time stretch on samples means you can connect a keyboard and pitch play the sample making this a great instrument. The BlackBox is the next piece of gear I am buying. Thanks for a superb video showcasing what I think is the best sampler on the market...and I have been researching samplers now for 3 years...after buying an Akai MPX16 and discovering it sounds like a toy, absolute horrible audio.
Why not use the touch screen for live play?
@@4m4z1n-grace8 You can use the touch screen if you wish, but playing a keyboard on a touch screen is not for the accomplished and well practiced keyboardist. Also hitting pad buttons on a screen is also awkward when attempting to do this in between playing other keyboards; you have about half a second sometimes t make the change smoothly. When the BlackBox is just part of your rig, it needs true instrument control (keys and pads).
I’ve been following and watching your videos for... hard to say in this time soup, but a while. Your live jamming/groove skills are so impressive. You’re the most inspiring thing I’ve got going on RUclips right now. Keep doing you, and I’ll keep sharing the love and knowledge.
Looks like 2020 is the year of 1010 :) So many improvements in BB’s firmware in the last months and probably so many to come.
Your videos are SO good! I'm always down to watch another, and another. I couldn't resist it any longer and ordered my Black Box this weekend so this video has me stoked because I hadn't considered using a controller like this even though I knew the Black Box was a midi host. So thanks again!
love watching your videos. good luck at the event!
I am glad you said the party was in 2019, otherwise I might have shown up
I have been looking at the 1010 blackbox for a while now and I think you just sold me on it that thing is dope!
It needs to be said: Ricky Tinez is the Bob Ross of live modular electronic production setups.
(I'm obviously not the first to notice this lol)
It's always fun to watch you having fun! Also, you really know your stuff; you make this look so easy!
Very inspirational. Thanks.
Ricky Tinez Thanksgiving Quarantine set - yessir!
Black box helped me the heck out. Your vids good explanation of what it is (and isn’t)
Great vibe dude! Awesome set! Enjoyed the few moments you caught lightning in a bottle, super fun!
building my techno setup, this information is gold. Subscribed and will be learning all i can from your videos. im sold.
Nice work, always inspiring. I've had black box for about a month. Sampling loops is a good way to go. I've streamlined my setup to black box controlling model D for bass, tr8, and sampled phrases from other synths. Live control of the bass and drums feels good to me. I definitely need something like launch pad xl for further control of black box. Thanks for the ideas!
Bro love the channel... I like the mini live jams as your showing off equipment... Your videos make me smile when I'm sitting here listening and you make a subtle change that takes the beat to a different land I always appreciate the "yooo" that I hear from you cuz at the same time I'm thinking "uhh that's dirty"... Love it keep with it this little jam was dope!
that was the heat ricky! you can play hot mass here in pittsburgh with that. talk to the detour guys!
Damn, this workflow is so fire! Those bass lines are straight bangin! I have the Bitbox but never really considered using it for live looping but I think I’ll start using it now
What an awesome demo! I've had a BB since release but this vid reminded me of how fun this kind of workflow can be. I loved all the little discoveries in sound and techniques you had during the vid!
Dope vid bro, looks super addictive!!!
Thanks for sharing this - haven't hooked up a midi controller yet to Blackbox other than triggering pads, but will do now! Your loops got me dancing on a Monday morning btw - sounds great.
kicking off 2020 with a mini banger
Ricky - this is just so much fun to watch! keep up the fun!
Best videos out there. You should have 153 MILLION subs :D No pressure :D
Great video about a very needful item :) I went down the Mpc Live route in the end but still found this video super helpful. Thank you, Ricky!
