Isabel Crawley: Maybe you can accept the fact that you are wrong (or something like that lol) Dowager Countess: *I wouldn't know, I'm not familiar with the sensation*
Maggie Smith - the name alone invokes an enormous talent. I have been a long time fan of hers and do not miss anything she does. I had the good fortune of seeing her perform at Stratford (Ont) four years in a row in the mid 70s and do effortless Shakespearean comedies with impeccable timing and humour as well as dramas with equal fervor under the direction of Robin Phillips ... what a treasure she is to the theater and cinema. I am so looking forward to catching her as well as other dames as Joan Plowright, Judi Dench & Eileen Atkins, all of whom I am also a fan, in the new documentary 'Tea with the Dames' coming Sept. 21st. Dame Maggie has an enormous list of credits and Downton and Harry Potter series are only the more reknown vehicles for which she's more famous ... I urge those who are fans to view the section on Maggie Smith deliver some biting comments and quotes from Downton Abbey dvd collection, they are hilarious ie., "What's a weekend?"
Ditto. I'm in permanent withdrawal. To perk myself up I just saw last season's The Durrell's and while not about a rich posh family, it has a lovely warm dynamic.
The reason the dog's name was Isis is in homage to Highclere Castle's historic Earl of Carnavoran (sp?), who was in Egypt often and was present on the expedition opening King Tut's tomb.
It's hard to believe because of some of her antics, but Lady Mary became my favorite character. She was complexed. She was chilly on the outside, but inside she felt a calling to do what was right for her family and she often showed incredible capacity for understanding.
After having disappointed by some series which don't have a constant quality from the beginning to end ( for ex. Game of Thrones, with that ridiculous season 8 and awful finale, or Sense8, a genial serie with a bad finale), we must say that Dowton Abbey is perfect. enjoyable, without any lack of quality from the very 1st. episode to the very last...
I read that Fellows had an aficionado to ensure that all history was correct, but I saw one thing that I don't was right. When the American mother was eating, she ate with the fork upside down as the British still do. I was in England for a while and learned that they still eat by pushing the food onto the back side of the fork and placing it into the mouth upside down. Americans eat with the fork right side up. I love the show and have the complete series on dvd. I have watched it about 3 times now. The series can be found at the libraries to borrow.
@kotugirl Weerasekare I think she just endeavours to be herself,in an environment that does not appreciate her enough. She was always one of my favorites, as well as Maggie Smith's dowager character, and their relationship was so fun to watch!
The Queen's interest in Carnarvon was not limited to the cricket that Prince Phillip may have played there on visits. The 7th Earl of Carnarvon was perhaps her closest male "friend" and also her stable manager. One of the few people who could interrupt what ever she was doing by phoning through racing results or news of her horses. Known as "Porchey" -(his courtesy title before ascending to the earldom was Lord Porchester ) -he was at times thought to be more than just a friend. It is thought that his death in 2001 on September 11th of all days ,devastated The Queen ,and in conjunction with the horrors of what was happening in the US that day, resulted in one of the saddest days of her life. She publicly shed tears at the memorial for the US tragedy, something she did not do at Diana's funeral, nor at the funerals of her sister and mother the next year. No surprise then that she may watch a show set in a stately home that no doubt held very many happy memories for her.
Why does every day involve a fight with an American... People who can use HRH: children of a monarch, male line grandchildren of a monarch, male consorts to the monarch, and female consorts of British princes. It is also carried by all children of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales (ie. any children that William and Kate may have). The notable exception is The Duchess of Windsor, who was not given the style despite her husband being the son of a monarch. Majesty (HM) is reserved only for past and present reigning Kings and Queens, and Queen consorts. Consorts of reigning Queens are never legally known as Kings so are not majesties. Mary, Queen of Scots, gave her husband the title of King of Scots as her consort but this was not legally recognised. King Consort has never been used in the United Kingdom
Jim Hall THANK YOU. Even though I'm not British nor royal, I felt personally insulted by this. A queens and kings are Their Majesties, don't do it wrong. (reminds me of the crown episode where they call Prince Phillip Your Grace and The Queen Your Highness... Awful...)
Love Downton Abbey, then you will love C.A MacRae's Gemini Complex, The Cabal: After the final demise of the Cathars at Chateau Mount Montségur in the south of France in 1244, a heroic rescue by a Knights Templar took place. Six hundred and fifty-three years later a murder and spate of suspicious deaths of the clergy become linked in the south of France. Flo’s first day (10th November 1918) at Chandringham doesn’t work out quite how she imagined. A bright but humble farm girl finds herself thrust into the upper echelons of society. Rather than being trained in the everyday tasks of a maid, she’s told she needs to leave her old life behind and immerse herself in the life of the aristocracy, as Lady Mary Tavistock. Her world is turned upside down, Flo realises she’s not the person she’s always thought she was and to make matters worse she finds out her life is endangered. In order to make sense of who she really is and what her purpose in life is, she’s sent to Switzerland to meet others of her kind. the first book of a trilogy. It's going to be released later this year.
You're right. People who do not have the title (ie the family except for Robert and Cora) are sir/lady+first name+Crawley (Lady Mary Crawley). People who do have the title can be sir/lady+first name+Crawley+title (Sir Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham). If there's a title but the first name isn't used, then it's just lord/lady+Grantham (not Crawley in this case: Lord Grantham).
Fully aware of that. When Edith got married at the end, Robert and Cora were introduced as the Earl and Countess of Grantham. However, their last name IS NOT GRANTHAM. Like Monkey said, their last name is Crawley, not Grantham.
The idea for Downton Abbey came from producer gareth neame who asked Julian fellows to recreate a film he wrote called Gosford park as a TV show. At least that's what Julian Fellows himself said during a bafta tribute to the show.
Shows the narrator had never watched the programme. The name I'd pronounced Grantham with a th not Grantam with a t. If you're going to report on it get the pronunciation correct.
Lori Stevens never heard of a Brit saying skeleetal. But to get the families name wrong shows the ignorance of the narrator. Ive also never heard of your surname being pronounced Beecham. Maybe that's just me.
Freya Baldwin-Stuart not offended. Just annoyed that if you're gong to comment on something u need to pronounce the words correctly. Why comment on something u obviously have not watched/no nothing about.
I LOVED Downton Abbey. The bloopers I noticed were a lot of "housekeeping failures" like dirty windows on inner doors, the need to dust, etc. Perhaps they never had the staff numbers they required.
So that explains Sybil's body shape. Her strong neck line always impressed me. Now I know. She reminded me of those "So you think you can dance" strong accomplished girls.
Heard about the movie is coming up..how wonderful!! Is 1 of the best shows around...wardrobe,scenic bakgrounds, great acting!!and so much history!!👍💫🌟💢💛💛💛💛💛
Very well-made list video, all stuff I didn't know before and just the right amount of focus and time spent on each item, each punctuated at the end with a cleverly fitting soundbite from the series. Now I want to watch the whole show a fourth time!!!
It never even entered my mind that the dog's name could make people think of terrorists! I just figured it had to do with the Egyptomania that was an en vogue style at the time, right after the opening of King Tut's tomb in 1921. I guess this means that I'm not a pleb.
interesting fact about the dog Isis- in the first season, Lord Grantham pets the dog and calls it 'boy' then in season 2- the dog gets a name and a sex change....
well- THAT must have been cut out of the American version- for some reason each episode aired on American TV cuts 2-3 minutes....I've watched season 1 5 times and never heard the dog called Pharaoh....thanks for the info.
How dare you refer to Queen Elizabeth II as "Her Highness" ....it's either "Her Majesty The Queen" or simply "Her Majesty"! That is always how you refer to her.
In the video, they refer to Sybil as Lady Sybil Grantham. That is wrong. Sybil’s last name was Crawley, later Branson, so she should have been referred to as either Lady Sybil Crawley or Lady Sybil Branson.
Sadly I stopped watching after Mathew died. I hated that he wanted a baby so bad and on the day of his kids birth he dies. 🤦♀️It was only six season long I wish the actor would have completed the series 🤷♀️
I love a bunch of British shows. I get their humor. I get some of their references. For drama I like their period peices, but I really love their mysteries especially the ones taken from older British mystery writers who really knew how to thrill you. But yes Maggie Smith's character was done perfectly, well worth many awards.
I love Downton Abbey but this video's description runs entirely tooooo fast. It could have been and should have been run slower instead of at robatic speed. What's the rush?
Just correcting ~your~ 'royal mishap': Queen Elizabeth is addressed as "Her (Royal) Majesty," not "Her (Royal) Highness" (which is reserved for any royalty lower than king or queen). You're welcome. 😊
Too bad The List didn't get the time period correct - Downton Abbey began during the Edwardian period, and the social and economic changes brought by World War I through to the 1920's were major themes in the show's plot and character development.
“The show’s more subtle mistakes”! Why, oh why, do Americans take it on themselves to do items on every British TV show, wedding, cultural event? They always end up showing how little they have understood or know about the culture on which they are commenting.
I love this video!! I can't believe Maggie Smith never watched an episode and I didn't know the royals watched it either! Left a like and subbed. Hope it helps. :)
Fact check, fact check, fact check! “Upstairs, Downstairs” preceded them all. Mind you, talking about family drama, let’s not forget “Hamlet” and “Macbeth”, these played in London before Broadway ever existed.
I was a little surprised that an American show was not an influence on "Downton Abbey". Here in the U.S. in the mid-70's there was the critically acclaimed "Beacon Hill" about a wealthy family in Boston in the 1920's. Excellent as the show was it didn't catch on with the viewing public and last maybe one or two seasons.
@@andrewbrendan1579 Depends on who gets to define 'excellent'. Being a little pass-remarkable, 'family drama' in the US is all about the drama; in the UK it's about family.
Does this narrator ever take a breath?! After three minutes I wanted to scream at her to SHUT THE HELL UP, but since this a one way communication, that won't do any good. I just instead cut watching short. Maybe I should watch it at slow speed? Nope, tried it... pretty weird.
"...even the most ardent fans might not know the finer details..." I knew all but maybe two of these details and I wouldn't consider myself one of the "most ardent fans". Kinda disappointing.
What's your favorite Downton Abbey moment?
I can hardly pick an absolute favorite, but one of my top favorite moments is when Mary finds out that Edith will become a Marchioness after she marries Bertie, thereby significantly outranking her. The expression on Mary's face is hilarious!
Stephani Spitzer I loved that as it was like Mary was getting her comeuppance after putting Edith down through all 6 seasons.
The List Matthews proposal! Beautiful scene!
The List When Matthew proposes to Mary in the snow.
Hands down...Matthew's proposal to Mary in the snow!
Maggie Smith was absolutely marvelous. A Dowager was the most colorful character and Maggie Smith played it splendidly.
I always celebrate her appearance and wait for one of her wonderfully friendly yet VERY twilighty comments! I LOVE her! She is one of the best characters. She REALLY IS a character!
Too bad she didn't see the end product as we did.
A million dollars to produce each episode? Really?
TOTALLY WORTH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's chicken feed
Isabel Crawley: Maybe you can accept the fact that you are wrong (or something like that lol)
Dowager Countess: *I wouldn't know, I'm not familiar with the sensation*
Emplar just FYI, Isobel says "How you hate to be wrong!" I love Downtown Abbey!!!

I'm glad Gillian Anderson passed on the show, because I loved Elizabeth McGovern. She was perfect for the role.

bluedance lilly , .'
It wouldn't be the same with Jillian A. Elizabeth McGovern and Hugh Bonneville had such chemistry. I think that they were in another movie together.
bluedance lilly I disagree. There was something lacking .
bluedance lilly true, and I would have been constantly thinking of the x files, McGovern makes it real
Any moment with maggie smith is a gem☺
I agree completely with your statement!
Lady Violet's every scene....ex: Carlisle: I don't think we will meet again. Violet: do you promise?.....
I feel so sad, I miss downtown Abby --- I'm so heart broken. Bring the show back
+Diraac Dropper - It's Downton Abbey not Downtown lol
Lucky you, come 2019 with the movie :)

The reason the dog's name was Isis is in homage to Highclere Castle's historic Earl of Carnavoran (sp?), who was in Egypt often and was present on the expedition opening King Tut's tomb.
plus there is a famous river called isis in england
Yeah Lord Carnavon, who discovered Toutankhamon's grave with Howard Carter
How many people know it is the name of a god?
Judy S. A goddess actually!
When Robert gets his new dog, they discuss how all of their dogs’ names come from ancient Egypt.
It's hard to believe because of some of her antics, but Lady Mary became my favorite character. She was complexed. She was chilly on the outside, but inside she felt a calling to do what was right for her family and she often showed incredible capacity for understanding.

Seriously this was the best series I have enjoyed watching!
The show was actually produced by and first aired on ITV, a British tv company 6 months before i went to PBS

The story could not be told faster?!
When Mary and Matthew got married and when their son was born. I so miss Downton Abbey. ❤️
Take heart. The movie is in the can (or being edited). September 20th of this year for release.

interesting fact about the dog Isis- in the first season, Lord Grantham pets the dog and calls it 'boy' then in season 2- the dog gets a name and a sex change....

to be honest I don´t know if it has ever been mentioned, I found that on a downton website :-)
they probably realized they had a mistake and corrected it on the site after the fact..... :)
aagold76 ikr that got me realy confused
Maggie Smith was hilarious in this. I loved her snark.
Ah....the Queen is not a "Highness". She is Her Majesty
I must have said it wrong. I do love Granny,

How dare you? Get a grip
Shannon Donnelly who
Absolutely the best written show ever.
Hard to watch this when every mention of the name is wrong. Grantams instead of Gran-tham....
In the video, they refer to Sybil as Lady Sybil Grantham. That is wrong. Sybil’s last name was Crawley, later Branson, so she should have been referred to as either Lady Sybil Crawley or Lady Sybil Branson.

5:54 Elizabeth II hasn't been "her highness" for nearly 66 years.
No wonder I went off Downtown Abbey, “Fellows was Influenced by American TV” well it shows. British TV programmes should just be that BRITISH!
According to the Downton timeline, Isis died in really old age, so even if inspired by world news, it was going to happen sooner or later.
Just correcting ~your~ 'royal mishap': Queen Elizabeth is addressed as "Her (Royal) Majesty," not "Her (Royal) Highness" (which is reserved for any royalty lower than king or queen). You're welcome. 😊

Excellent as the show was it didn't catch on with the viewing public and last maybe one or two seasons.

Depends on who gets to define 'excellent'.
Being a little pass-remarkable, 'family drama' in the US is all about the drama; in the UK it's about family.

Oh please, the Dowager is everybody's favored.
Thank You so much!
The creator must have really used another TV show as a blueprint ! The newer series of Upstairs Downstairs !
Does this narrator ever take a breath?! After three minutes I wanted to scream at her to SHUT THE HELL UP, but since this a one way communication, that won't do any good. I just instead cut watching short. Maybe I should watch it at slow speed?
Nope, tried it... pretty weird.
🤣 Exactly. She didn't select her career based on her strongest skill I guess 🤣
in old english, it is/was 'grant-ham', not 'granth-am' as they characters say it in modern times.
The way you pronounce GRANTHAM is aggravating! It is GRAN-THAM, NOT GRANT-HAM. UGH!
The Maggie Smith Show, aka Downton Abbey.
Isis was killed off because she would have been a bazillion years old in dog years.
what the hell? her name was lady sybil CRAWLEY not grantham. get your facts right at least.
"...even the most ardent fans might not know the finer details..." I knew all but maybe two of these details and I wouldn't consider myself one of the "most ardent fans". Kinda disappointing.
Did you just call the Queen 'Her Highness'? No.
