  • The historical drama Downtown Abbey is not just a popular and critically acclaimed show, but also had a huge cultural impact on society. The fashion worn by characters on the series has seen a strong revival of interest in the UK and a bill nicknamed the “Downtown Abbey Law” was unsuccessfully introduced to the UK parliament.
    It had won numerous accolades and has a huge following of fans around the world, which is why devotees are sad to see it coming to an end.
    But why is this beloved show ending its run even though it has such a popular following? Here’s a deep dive into why we won’t be seeing the Crawley family anymore.

    I find it hard to believe Maggie Smith was not recognised prior to Downton Abbey. After all she was a major star in Harry Potter, one of the biggest film franchises ever.

      She was a familiar face but she hadn’t really made her mark with Potter. Even she said she could walk around in real life unnoticed. It was the character she played in Downton which made her shine. Then she couldn’t go anywhere with a sense of privacy.

      What is interesting is the era that the show is set in. It starts in 1912, when the world of the upper class is beginning to be less comfortable and the winds of change are blowing. The n WW1 kills of a lot of the upper class so estates like Downton are in trouble. After the War young people prefer jobs in factories to going into service. It had a natural time line from 1912 to the 1920s when change was happening -. But the way of life that Violet had taken for granted was destroyed for many aristocrats and the 1930s and WW2 would finish it off. SOme upper class people hung onto their homes and estates but they had to run them as busineses, and find other ways of making money...

    Downton wasn’t cancelled. This video is silly. It was always planned to draw to a close, a natural conclusion, it’s not an American network commercial show, it was designed to run a few years like all British dramas and to depict a specific time period before the world changed. They went on to make a movie and Maggie Smith was in it, and there’s another one coming. The older characters can’t credibly go on living, in those days average life expectancy was 65.

      Even palatial life was more uncomfortable and prearious than middle class life today. Further the social attitudes were more anachronistic than realistic. Down stairs in Downton would have looked more like life in a sweatshop as she mentions. Further, upstairs would not have seems as nice either. The family would; have been wearing sweaters or the like because of the draftiness of the great houses and their everyday dress not so well fitted.

      What additional DOWNTON ABBY movie is being planned? Reviews on the first one were respectable, not great, like the box office. Likely not enough to generate another one. And likely Maggie Smith would not participate-she could not be replaced by Judi Dench-so a major component would be missing. Although the film could start with the family returning home from the funeral, reading the will to find a secret as the basis for the film.

    Well, I don't see why it had to end. Highclere castle still exists. And Blenheim, and lots of other estates. Downton was saved by Matthew's inheritance. In an interview I watched, Julien Fellowes confided that all of the plots were based on real life experiences noted in diaries and letters of the time. Edith ends up as a Marchioness! I'm guessing she had to provide an heir. I'd like to have followed Daisy's path into the future. As well as Thomas's stint as Butler. By the time George reaches maturity, WWII will be a reality. Seems to me there's plenty there for drama.

      I've seen this series more than once and every time it ends with the last clips of the final episode, it breaks my heart. I absolutely love whatching it, it's like a window to the past, an era that we know so much about but couldn't imagine it in real life. As much as I'd love to see more seasons and it's clear that they could create other great stories in it, I think the ending was perfect. It's like you get to peak into their lives for a few years but their stories continue after the end as well. It gives space to our imagination, too.

      Many of these great houses became much too expensive to maintain and either fell into disrepair or their treasures had to be sold off because of the massive death duties that had to be paid. The ones that survive, like Chatsworth for instance are run by Trusts and Highclere etc have to be opened to the public otherwise they would not survive. So, I don't think that the story could've gone on much longer. Incidentally, the final ballroom scene in the movie was filmed in the Marble Salon in Wentworth Woodhouse, near where we live. I've danced in period dress in that very ballroom. It's an amazing place. I loved the movie because it was a real happy ending for everyone.

    Years ago, running a house needed lots of labour. Even turning the lights on took ages (all those candles). Keeping the place warm - a fire in every room to be lit and fuelled and maintained.
    But as technology changed so the need for servants declined. Lighting required a click of a switch not a gang of people cleaning, changing and armed with flame starters to start them off then later to shut them down.

    I'm rewatching right now and am at the episode where Edith steals the baby from the woman who had raised her for 3 or so years. I know we're supposed to be sympathetic to put-upon Edith but what she did was incredibly cruel. First she took the baby from a family that had no doubt bonded with it as an infant then from a woman who loved it deeply. Horrible.

    • @spiritmatter1553
      @spiritmatter1553 3 года назад +3

      Really emotionally damaging to the child and in real life, there’d probably never be a strong bond between Edith and her daughter who had been twice removed from a loving family situation in her earliest years.

    • @Famijoly
      @Famijoly 3 года назад +4

      Those episodes were disturbing to me. They show Edith as emotionally unbalanced, desperate to erase the consequences of her indiscreet relationship. The woman who was mother to the child for three years saw the situation for exactly what it was -- a power play by spoiled rich aristocrat.

    • @spiritmatter1553
      @spiritmatter1553 3 года назад +5

      I’d say Edith's most admirable action in all this was choosing not to have an abortion and giving life to the child she made with Michael. And with that, she should have left the baby in Switzerland and that would have been another noble sacrifice. But then the DA writers would’ve had to create a different storyline for Edith without falling back on her child as an emotional ping-pong ball to conveniently create drama and conflict. Instead, the child became Edith's "happy pill" and the only cure for her sadness.

    • @glen7318

      @@spiritmatter1553 She could have had the baby fostered in Switzerland for a while and then found a foster family in England later.. perhaps near Rosamiund... but leave the child in peace to grow up.. not popping in all the time, favouring her own child and upsetting the couple who were giving the child a home and loved her.

    Honestly don't know why I kept on watching after Sybil and Matthew died. Maggie and Matthew's mother were amusing but that was about it. Nothing I
    wanted to happen happened and the ending, with Edith marrying someone of a higher rank than Mary's husband, was so snobbish it offended me. I had
    hoped Edith would have stayed independent and maybe had a liason with Tom. In fact, Mary and Edith both seemed to get along with him so well, I was
    really surprised the story never went there. I guess it wasn't snobbish enough for the show. And Daisy, the little kitchen maid, only had one schitk: losing
    her temper and spouting off then panicking about doing so. How many times did we see that? Once was enough. And Rose and the black musician.
    Come one, people, even the Granthams, were not that enlightened back then. I hate when period shows attribute modern sensibilities to their characters.
    It makes light of how hard it was to achieve basic equality for so many people. And Matthew's mother marrying that lord or whatever instead of the nice
    doctor. It seemed out of character for her. Well, I never got the attraction of Upstairs/Downstairs either but I always thought that was because of the
    screwed up way they aired the show in the US. Still love the Downton theme song though. It will always be the best part for me.

The estate workers and their families, worked on the estate, and were part of the community. Many generations of families worked on estates.
    The Spencers for instance worked on the Sandringham estate. They served the royal family. Many generations later one of Spencers lady Diana married into actual royalty etc etc. The point being the British classes were close and depended on each other.

    I loved this series, but think it was right to end when it did. However, I do have a few of minor criticisms:
    1) The story began in 1912 and ended about 13 years later, but no one looked a day older then than they did at the start! 2) I know of no condition which could have prevented Mary from falling pregnant, which could be cured by a 'minor operation'. What 'minor operation'? Contrast X-rays to reveal blocked Fallopian tubes were not available in the 1920s.
    3) Not one lady who became pregnant seemed to suffer any pregnancy sickness, so they were able to keep their condition secret, for various reasons, for some time. This is especially odd with Anna, who had a least two pregnancies before the one which eventually went to term. An incompetent cervix is highly unlikely to cause a miscarriage before 16 weeks, often later. Could she really have kept her pregnancies from Mr Bates for so long? Furthermore, when a woman with a Shirodkar suture goes into labour, it must be removed immediately, or the cervix will be ripped to shreds. Would the local doctor have known how to do that?

    Once or twice "the war in South Africa " was mentioned in the Downton Abbey series. I am South African and live in a City that's considered the last British Outpost. Queen Victoria visited this City of Pietermaritzburg. I trained as a nurse at a hospital in this City. The hospital was founded by Sir George Grey who was originally from Britain. The influx of British Settlers between 1849 and 1850 was the reason Sir G. Grey had this hospital built. The hospital is called Greys Hospital Pietermaritzburg. Many of the white English speaking people here are originally from the United Kingdom and still very colonial in their ways. When I visited the USA many people asked me if I was from England because of my English accent and mannerisms. No I am the 4th generation here in South Africa. I am now African and even speak an African language (with an English accent I've course) called Zulu.
