    The US Marines were called Leathernecks not because of their experience in Philippines. The leatherneck of the uniforms of the US Marines existed way before the Americans came to the Philippines. Yes, it is use to protect the neck and critical veins in battle. It is believed the origin of leathernecks came from the Barbary Wars were the US Marines participated.

      With that in mind, it seems the Filipinos just brought it back into fashion for a while.

    Thank you for sharing. The term "leatherneck" refers to the neckbands to protect the neck that dates back to 1700, which is about 200 years before the US Marines had contact with Filipino escrimadors.

    • @titanxcharlie
      @titanxcharlie 4 года назад +3

      The term "leatherneck" was derived from a leather stock once worn around the neck by both American and British Marines (and soldiers). In the United States, beginning in 1798, "one stock of black leather and clasp" was issued to each Marine every year.[2] Its use as a synecdoche for Marines began as a term of ridicule by sailors.[3]
      The use of the collar in battle was to protect the neck against the cutlass of pirates.[citation needed] The First Barbary War engaged the new American fighting force to stop the Barbary pirates[4] from holding trade ships for ransom during Jefferson's term as president.[5]
      The dress blue uniform of the US Marines still bears a tribute to that stock collar today, with its stiff cloth collar.

What does this guy know about the street life? He even went oversees to train with the Gracies. He can’t speak for most Filipinos. He seemed like the spoiled privileged kid type who got into fights, so his rich parents enrolled him to karate. (btw, Filipinos are generally non confrontational).

      Lucifer Morningstar the problem is you can’t claim that you represent a whole population of people, culture or ethnicity. He mentions “we, Filipinos...” I’m a Filipino and I do not associate or feel that I could relate to any of this guy is saying.
      There is always someone who will say that the neighborhood he grew up in is tough. There is a certain masculine satisfaction in taking pride of a rough upbringing. No matter what country that person is from. So what he said is also what the wanna be Crip in South Central LA or the Juvenile Delinquent in Tokyo, or the MMA fighter in Rio de Janeiro would say. That trait is not specific to Filipinos. Again, Filipinos are generally non confrontational and peaceful.

Many Kickboxers in Amsterdam are active in crimes or had been in one or two, Minnesota is just a dangerous place to be. You can be safe at the most dangerous part of Manila but not in Detroit, Minnesots or Amsterdam.

If youre smart and would want to train self defense in the Philippines particularly in Manila which is a place of too many individuals posting as "Masters", and use FMA as a platform to make easy money. So if the Americans could not win that battle thent he Filipinos could not win it even more so. Both Filipino men and American men died and were captured by the brutal Japanese. Even int he bataan death march we both suffered. How disrespectful of you to talk trash about US fighters.
      The US and Filipinos were not even fightig each other you idiot. They both were on the same team fighting the Japanese Imperial forces. know your history you ignoramus! Either way, I declined to join because when I asked For a trial the guy at the entrance said I would have to wear a tshirt instead of my Gi because I wasn't a full member (some bs like that) I found that odd and slightly disrespectful since prof. Aguilar received his belt from Royler Gracie which would mean we are under the same patch ( Rgda ) but whatever, each person runs their school different. And the reason why his school wins so many competitions cause he is probably the only legit black belt in that region. Jiu Jitsu is currently asscheeks in the philippines. Some people are just clueless. When it comes to frat wars, no matter if you're rich or poor, when your brothers drag you to a frat war, you have no choice but to bask in violence and get drench in blood. Watch the news, sad stories of youths regretting their decisions after getting involved with frats. Even nowadays, from time to time, there are frat related violence. And the number #1 perpetrator with the highest rate of violence is Tau Gamma Phi. Mostly are high profile crimes. In fact, just last year, there was a senate hearing about a death of a neophyte in said frat. Alvin Aguilar is one of the prominent members of Tau Gamma Phi. He's a legend in the entire org and holds important position during his time. Geez, the guy was the former Grand Triskelion of La Salle. And I'm telling you, you can't lead a bunch of lions if you got no iron balls and you have no intentions to get your hands dirty. The guy has all the right to be the one being interviewed with all his accomplishments. Like seriously, he was the first to train with Gracie. He also trained with Pekiti-Tirsia Grand Master Leo Gaje. Damn, those names are legends in the world of Martial Arts.

      He may be a rich kid, but he's no stranger to the chaos in Manila's streets. One thing most people don't know, it's the rich kids who were preyed upon by the poor thugs of Manila's streets. Alvin trained in YawYan, Sarian, PekitiTirsia, JKD and BJJ. He even choked our JKD instructor to prove his point about grappling. Those who think he's not legit doesn't know what they're talking about. He's like Paul Vunak, a passionate martial art who proved his fighting mettle in the streets of Manila. He's correct when he said Filipinos are not confrontational, because we don't like cheap talk. We either bash someone's face right away or back off and step away for awhile because we can't face the conflict at hand, then plan for the next move. Never underestimate the smaller statured Pinoys. Plenty of fights before teen years would be ok, I had my fair share, but once these kids grow up and learn how to arm themselves, you better run for the hills baby. As the saying goes, it's 'ubusan ng lahi, matira matibay' or can be loosely translated in English as it's a fight to the death, and let the toughest one survive! Peace!

    I believe there are or were more talented Filipinos than Pacquiao. But better fighters? NO! What this guy doesn't understand is having your head in the right place is part of being a great fighter/boxer. You can't train someone to be mentally strong enough to be an elite boxer. He or she has to have it in his/her blood. Pac got to where he's at because he has the complete package: talent, heart, luck, and hunger. One or two Filipino fighters may have world class talent but at some point they are going to fail due to lacking the other key ingredients. Someone might come along to be as good or better than Pac but not until the next blue moon. This guy thinks people like Pac exist in every corner in the Philippines. He's delusional.

      Channing Tatum is Bae No, no...this isn't about skills of MMA vs. skills of Boxing. This is about becoming that special fighter who is a once in a lifetime type of individual. Who is/was the most successful Filipino MMA fighter? Probably Mark Munoz, right? His talent and fame aren't anywhere close to the level of Manny Pacquiao. Once again, someone like Pac comes around only once in a blue moon. You can't just take any skilled Pinoy and turn him into a superstar athlete. The guy in the video says once Pinoy fighters have their head in the right place they'll be as successful as Manny. It's not that easy.

Even master in martial arts can feel bad to stop a guys knows well what he do with his knife. I want to share what my mentor have shared with me. Because that is the only remembrance I have for him. My mentor is a private person with his skills in close combat in arnis and knife. He is not known having that skill but He possess lot of skills in hand combat. I am the only person he have teach more his knowledge of self defense. He created his own of how he could counter different martials arts. But the most awesome skills I love the most is his counter and blocking of all punches in boxing style. I love his feet position body position and hand position when he defense against a boxer. His skills in boxing more than any greatest boxer in the world. I saw him having sparring with all his sons teaching them to block and counter the different direction of the punches. My mentor is close to 80 years old but he want not to be known. I want not to abondon his skills and I want it to be known all his technique. I prefer my mentors techniques it is wise and smart combat.
