GU10 bulb stuck in socket? Here’s how to remove and replace it...

- If you're having trouble removing and replacing one of those pesky GU10 bulbs (or for that matter, MR16, GU24, A19, or other lightbulbs with these two prongs on them), it's actually pretty easy.
Think of it like a child-proof pill bottle. You need to push down firmly and THEN turn it counter-clockwise (if you don't push down, it's not going to unscrew very easily).
I hope this helps! Good luck!
Thank you! I was trying everything: a suction cup, my fingertips…. It was the “pushing up” that did it. Fastest time ever for changing one of these awful inventions! Very grateful you took the time to make the video.
Alright! I'm glad it helped! Thanks for watching.
I really appreciate this video too. I had purchased one of the suction cups to help remove the bulb. Unfortunately, I had no idea that you had to twist it. I was baffled until watching this video. Embarrassed I couldn’t figure this out but glad to get the job done.!!
You and me both! Don't feel bad; tens of thousands of people (as evidenced by the view count of this video) had the same problem. Glad I was able to help. :)
For anyone struggling to release pull/release a GU10 from the fitting (can't turn or pull), try using a small suction cup like you might find on something that sticks to a wall. as discussed in the video, press inward while turning anticlockwise (approx. 45°) to unlock, then use the suction cup to pull gently. I was struggling with mine for a while but this worked immediately for me.
I somehow bought some GU10 bulbs that have a face with little bumps, maybe to improve the light refraction. Of course my little suction cup needs a smooth surface to work. I've used folded duct tape. I wouldn't be surprised if some people use a hammer . . .
Of course that only works (easily) if the bulb in question does not have a loosely fitting lens, which allows it to rotate independently of the rest of the bulb.
I have just tried to do this with a floor lamp, and although I knew how to do it, pressing up then attempting to turn it, just meant that the face of it turned, but not the actual bulb. That was even with a suction pad attached. I ensured that the replacement bulbs I bought did NOT have a rotating lens!!!
Thank you so much for this video. I’ve been trying to figure out how to replace these bulbs for the last 2 years. I finally figured out what type of bulb it was, and found this video.
YES! I'm so glad to video helped. Thanks for the comment!
Thank you so much for this! I was at a lost. The pushing is what worked for me.
Thank you for posting this!!! Bought an older home with these and couldn’t figure out how to remove the burnout bulb!!
I'm glad it worked for you!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I was REALLY struggling with this, and your video sorted me out nice and quickly! You are such a star! I was close to giving up, I have to say!
Thank-you very much for this tutorial Seth!!!! 😂 Just as you described (including pliers),, I was finally able to get the bulbous. I couldn't get the new one in 'til now. 😮😅😊 Have a good one!
Thank you so much! I finally was able to change my kitchen light bulb!!! I feel so accomplished 😆
I have four in a row. About two months ago the first one went and I tried and tried to get it out to no avail. Then I saw the second one go. Same again. I am now down to the last bulb in the row, thinking if this one goes I will have to put a lamp in the kitchen or pay a call out fee for an electrician who will just laugh at my idiocy! I finally did it due to this clip!😂😂😂
Thanks for this video. My lights didn’t work exactly the same way, but I figured it out based on this as a starting point. I really appreciate it.
I'm glad it was able to help nonetheless! Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much for this video.
I was really trying hard to remove it and refit it
I saw n number of videos but this one is perfect for GU10 bulbs !!
Perfectly described the technique!!!
You lifesaver. I spent well over 20mins trying.
Glad it helped!
Omg you are my hero. Thought maybe I was just daft. Would never thought pushing bulb up.
Thank you so much for making this vt
Thank you so much for this. I needed duct tape stuck to the bulb and shaped to include a pulling handle to pull the bulb downwards after turning it to get the job done. I was totally losing my mind before finding this video!
I hear you! I had the same issue. I'm glad I was able to help.
You can use a rubber suction cup.
Thank you very much for the advice about the firm pressure and the application of a rubber suction cup. For me, both pressure and the application of a suction cup did the trick! The rubber suction cup is commonly found in "stick on" bathroom wall accessories like a towel peg or a shower sand timer that can adhere quite well to a smooth tile surface, which is quite easy to detach from your bathroom accessory to apply to the (COLD) bulb head surface. So, with suction cup in place, press quite firmly and rotate anti-clockwise about a quarter turn to remove the bulb from its fitting, and vice versa (clockwise) to fit the replacement bulb. But in general I find these flush fit bulbs rather fiddly to insert and remove from their fixture.
Great feedback! Thanks for watching!
I used my rubber coated garden gloves to grip and twist the bulb👍🏻Sometime you need to improvise😊
THANK YOU for the reminder. It's been so long since I changed one of these that I forgot the trick!
I found pushing my palm flat against it worked wonders... had been trying for ages and that worked instantly
Thank you so much for this video
It’s perfect for GU10 bulbs !!
Thanks! Been fooling around with it for 5 minutes before I saw your video. Out in a second.
Awesome! Glad to hear that!
Thank you so much for posting this explanation! It worked like a charm!
Yes! Glad to hear that!
The bulb and socket push/pull out of the rotating glass bullet shade, if the wires are long enough. Then its easier to push and turn to remove the bulb, some get really stuck.
Thank you! I was about to smash up the light fixture!!
I totally hear you! Glad it helped
Sometimes smashing it and replacing it with a better design is the most rational thing to do.
@@nemo227 You’ve definitely got a point, and also it can be tremendously satisfying! 😂😂 Cheers!
I was getting so frustrated. Thank you!!
You're welcome!
Thanks! I wasn’t pushing in hard enough
Super super useful thank you!!!!
ok youre a genius, thank you sooooooo much omg...this bulb was making me crazy and I hate them btw...but thank you for helping me out with your video x for that, I am subscribing to your channel :)
Alright! I'm glad I was able to help! Thanks for watching.
How do you change the ring fitting?
Thank you! This helped me a great deal today.
Great! I'm so glad to hear that!
A design that requires a special tool/technique and/or causes a lot of frustration is not an improvement. It is merely a change. I've had mine working in the kitchen where good lighting is essential. The first 7 years went pretty well but, during the past 2 years, they seem to operate under the influence of aliens in flying saucers orbiting the earth. New bulbs or old bulbs, they light up according to their own random timetable. I'll be taking down the fixture and checking all the connections to pinpoint the cause of erratic on again/off again performance.
Haha, I hear you. I think that requiring tools and special techniques is actually a step backward. Things like this need to be absolutely idiot-proof... and when a tutorial video like this gets tens of thousands of views, that's verifiable proof that a lot of people are having a hard time with it!
What can I do if the socket itself is twisting along with the light bulb?
Hello, in the United States do you use lamps with a gu10 socket? What spotlights would you use to illuminate the interior of a hotel in the USA?
My bulb fitting isn’t in the roof. It’s on a downlight that the fixture comes out of the wall. Very worried about having to apply pleasure as I’m finding I have to hold the top of the casing too or else I’d just push the whole thing off the wall in one swift motion
Yes, wall downlights that rotate is my problem too. Just managed to change 1 by pure luck, the other 1 I'm having a hell of a time putting the new one back in as they don't seem to rotate right (clockwise) very easily. This is still ongoing.
I ended up using duct tape to remove the bulb. I bent the tape over so it would stick to the bulb and my fingers and twisted and it came out. I did however say a few swear words while doing this. Now I am taking a rest before I put the new one back in.
Hahaha, well, I hope you could finish the job and continue living your best life.
You get the award. Not my first gu10, but in this fixture pushing up and turning just wasn't working. Duct tape and I was done in 2 seconds.
Thank You I will go try today it is week I can not take them out.
OMG THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU I have these all over and I need to change them....THIS WAS FANTASTIC. Brilliant!!!
I'm so glad I could help!
Thanks for this tip!
Mine went straight through the ceiling 😳
Who decided the lightbulb needed reinventing?? The phrase "how many x does it take to screw in a lightbulb" is the premise of a joke for a reason, it's meant to be easy!
Thank you 👍
My old bulb disappeared into the space . It became disconnected from the wire. I put a new bulb onto the wire and it works but it is hanging down. How do I retrieve the old globe?
I can't get the new bulb to rotate clockwise to tighten it.
Came here looking for an actual gu10 stuck in the socket. This unfortunately was not it.
The viewer who added duct tape, must be a genius. Update your video please because the stubborn ones don't respond to pushing up and turning alone.
I have an issue where when i push and turn, the whole structure turns too and the bulb simply cannot get out. :(
God bless you
THANK YOU!
You're welcome!
Thanks
You can use a rubber suction cup.
fantastic!
Unfortunately I had to take the entire silver part out in order to replace the light bulb 😅 cause mine was different from yours
Oh no! Sorry about that. Why can't they just make these things easy??
Coz electrician wants to charge you an arm and a bloody leg for doing the job
@@dongmingzhu666 yeah, most likely.
Cheers!
It works but only in case everything is smooth, lens does not rotate, socket does not rotate i.e. you are lucky.
Otherwise the only option is to dismount the whole thing / or just break the lamp (turn the electricity off completely!) and unscrew it gripping from inside.
Whoever invented this crap, deserves the Nobel Prize at least.
Never mind getting it out.I can't get it back in
Try that on a greasy vent hood, the damn bulb is stuck and won’t turn with a suction cup or a piece of duct tape, that won’t even stick to the glass! I even broke the rim off the bulb by “firmly” pushing the damn bulb! I wonder what a numb nut invented that kind of bulb to begin with?!
Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that. I agree, it's a horrible design, IMO. I'm sure there must've been some rationale behind it, but I sure don't understand what they were thinking.
@@sethwilliams43 once the bulb broke I got it off 😨 but that should not be the way to do it.
Gu10 bulb stuck
👍
Thanks but mine still stucked. I even removed the hood screen and unplugged the bulb from inside. But because of the clip, it's still stucked. Ridiculous design.
The lightbulb I hate the most
@@hanchen2355 me too, me too.
Saviour trying for ages
Worst bulb ever.
@@MrMetronitro pretty much!
Thank you sooooooo much!!!! Life saver!!!
When I watch these videos, the installers are always touching the surface of the bulbs. Why when you purchase these bulbs it clearly stated, NOT TO TOUCH THE SURFACE WHATSOEVER. This could leave residue from your hands that could shorten the life of the bulbs. So how are you supposed to install into a range hood without touching the surface?
Thank You ! ❤️
Thank you!! 👍🏼
Thanks
