  • This video from www.illustralighting.com compares an MR16 and a GU10 LED light bulb as well as how to install them. LED lighting technology has been slowly replacing all type of bulbs, from the A series to the MRs and PARs.

In my experience for most MR16 GU5.3; the driver for powering a approx. 50 Watt halogen bulb usually cannot supply the very low current / power for driving an equivalently bright 4 to 5 Watt GU 5.3 LED without causing the LED to flicker, so almost always the driver needs to be changed with the bulb so not as straight forward as shown. The GU10 change is as shown, simply change the bulb.

I've been told that people who really don't wanna touch the old transformers can just keep one of the old lights so their power supply is "fooled" and everything else upgraded to LED and that makes them not flicker. I trust the person 100%, but never had to check it. Maybe it will help another lazy man like me. 🤷‍♂😂

Thanks Sammy! Are the grades, standards or codes generally universal in say London compared to Sydney or are they very specific? Just curious. The Codes in America seem tied to safety mostly but are not the same in various locals.

I have a question, which ones of these are more safe of a short circuit the MR16 or the GU10? this will sound weird but i want to install led color lights in a helmet (those come with a wireless remote) but i hate the fact the light itselft just come in bulb and those two conections, and i want to do it in a safe way. :)

I did this and now when i put the light switch on the rcd braker trips.
A sparky said the transfomers wont work with the led bulbs

That is an interesting question. And not one I can answer definitively. I would say anything low voltage (like an MR16) is safer than anything that uses mains voltage. Using lights in a mobile application like a helmet, I suggest hooking it up to a battery (again low voltage)
Good Luck, send me a pic when you're done!

I'm watching every video here about how to replace the GU10's. I got the old bulb out but cannot get the new bulb back in. I have compared the pins and bases very carefully and they are precisely the same, although by a different manufacturer. I seriously suspect that I can watch 30 videos on this topic and still not find them helpful.

    How do I go from the MR16 GU5.3 to a MR16 GU10? MR16 GU5.3 units are absolute garbage.

    MR16 - Requires transformer 12v - 240v (Dimmable)
Check Lamp package to confirm if it says dimmable or non dimmable
    --------------------------------------------------------------
    GU10 - Mains Voltage 240v
    Dimmable !
    --------------------------------------------------------------
Best option whoever has MR16 bulbs that contain 2-pins contact an electrician an replace these fittings which is quick & easy to GU10 fittings & bulbs as these are cheaper to use !!!!!!!
