FINALLY!!!!! A thorough review of a System76 laptop! Great job! I've been waiting to see a review like this before purchasing. I can finally purchase it! THANK YOU!
Oh! I'm so glad they have a 4k now! I actually considered a system76 laptop not too long ago because I really like them as a company, but a 4k display is a non-negotiable for the work I do, and they had none at the time.
@Sony Alpha Adventure honestly, having to read/write text for 10+ hours a day is made *much better* having a crisp, nice 4k display. I'm a minimalist in many ways when it comes to my setup, but 4k screens are second only to the jump from HD to SSD in the quality-of-life improvement in a laptop.
@@MrGamelover23 I've actually been using Linux on a 3k laptop + external 4k monitors for years with lowly Intel integrated graphics and it works just fine. Of course the battery life isn't great but I'm always plugged when I'm using the monitor anyway. It's honestly not that bad.
Would be great to add some comments about battery life, both for the "video playback" case that seems to have become the standard as well as for running some workload. I tend to use laptops as laptops, not just mobile desktops, so knowing how much time and how much performance I can get when not tethered to the wall is always useful =)
Welcome to the mixed resolutions nightmare, buddy! I have a main 4K monitor and two extra 1080p ones. I'm one of those crazy people who likes 100% scaling on 4K, even on my 32''display. A nice tip is using the large text option in GNOME's accessibility settings, that is the sweet spot for me, without changing scaling at all. And as far as the 1080p monitors go, the scale won't match but you get used to it very quickly
Anyone else who has these issues, try unplugging the HDMI and restart. Plug it back in after it boots to home screen. Then change the settings in display.
Just switched my Mac over to Linux mint , so far everything has been great. Looking into purchasing a system 76 laptop in the near future. Dell,Lenovo and hp need to start offering mint and pop os !
importing system76 laptops into the eu is a gigantic pain in the neck, i think ill have to take a look into tuxedo computers instead as they're based in Germany
In excess of $2000 for this laptop configuration? Kind of an understatement, since I priced it out at over $2600. Too rich for me. I'll stick with used business-class laptops off lease and sold on ebay or at local e-waste recyclers.
$239 for the upgrade to 1TB Gen 4 is robbery lol. Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus 1TB is constantly on sale on Amazon for $100-120. For $239 you can easily get 2TB.
Yea it's kinda like phones with the easy profit, but on laptops you can easily upgrade the storage yourself. That's why when I buy a laptop I always choose the bare minimum spec in terms of storage and ram and upgrade it myself when it arrives.
I really dont understand why linux community does not prioritize the scaling issues, they are a bummer for everybody who want to use such devices, I mean how I am supposed to buy such machine when it will make my work horrible with my external monitors. Sure you can use just the laptop, but I personally think this laptop is by default meant to be paired with external monitors considering the power it can utilize. Until we have this annoying issue fixed alongside battery issues we will never be able to cross that line where people buy linux machines.
Could you make a comparison video of the best laptops that are supporting linux out out of the box like the system 76 laptops and hp dev, etc.? Also take care man if you are sick maybe you should take rest.
how good is the cooling though... what temps is the CPU and GPU hitting when pushing it to the max? Some gaming laptops can do that like 80C, while others with same specs have worse cooling and hit like 100C and start throttling. Thats more what I would want to know if I got one for gaming.
But 4k (which eats the battery, causes scaling issues and makes no difference unless you stick your nose on the screen) is the most important, who cares about actual performance 😁
I just don’t understand why the AMD options are so few and all the “performant” laptops come with an NVIDIA GPU. If I was going to be using Windows, sure, RTX 40 series all the way. I do not want to deal with the headache that is NVIDIA/Linux driver compatibility. I already deal with enough weird issues dual booting my desktop and just want something that works. Thing is, I’m not even an AMD guy. Every computer I’ve ever owned or built has had Intel and NVIDIA hardware. Still, for Linux and open source, AMD wins everyday. And when I finally go to spend money on AMD, their offerings are meager. Between Purism and System76, there’s like 3 to choose from that don’t have 40 series cards and all come with iGPU. And underwhelming parts for things like screens. Le sigh, concessions must be made I suppose..
I’m a fan of System76. I love their products. As a Mac user, I’m finding hard to make a switch. I know you own a Mac as well. How hard is to ignore the eco system that Apple provides. As my Mac don’t get updates anymore, I’m still confused whether to switch to System76 or not.
if your mac is no longer getting updates then at some point you'll need to upgrade. What I did was upgrade to a m1 mac and then turn my old mac into a linux machine. Its awesome
I'd love to have a nice aluminum shell, unfortunately the manufacturing isn't quite there yet to make that cheaply. Most will take a solid block and mill it, which is hyper expensive. A piece of sheet metal stamped into shape would be far easier and cheaper, but you'd have tiny little lips here and there that couldn't exist and allow for extra mount points and whatnot. So it's kind of a tradeoff unless they use steel, which has all sorts of problems too, but it would make welding easier so it could be more than just a stamping. Not that they can't weld aluminum, just that steel is easier.
