Worth mentioning that - System76 fully supports right to repair and provides schematics and anything you need to perform your own repairs - system76 allows you to disable Intel ME - you can still install windows on a System76 laptop, they support that and it'll run very well with no issues Personally after learning all this from Louis Rossmans video I think I'll get a laptop from them next time

Honestly, tiling on a tiling wm, either dynamic or not, is very strong. My networking notebook is on i3 for a reason. The tiling on gnome3 on my desktop is not that useful, not implemented well enough to be honestly. yet.

That's also a form of palm rejection but yes, you're right, you can disable it. It's just a sane default for a laptop that's obviously not very big on gaming.

Imagine Quebecers like people who were kind of force to become « British » then Canadian, yet being asked to abandoned their culture, which never happen, at least not yet. Laws are made in Canada that requires French to come first on some things, that the country is bilingual, etc. This is a very complex and hot topic, one that I can’t give you an answer, but I do know it’s far more of an issue than Belgium. Quebecer (and Acadiens / other French speakers) are very proud of this langage (even more than actual French people) and are fighting everyday to keep it.

He has great character, and is the reason why I actually decided to ditch Windows for good and embrace Linux in my daily life. Seriously wish he'd make a "Switching to linux for beginners" series on the official LTT channel, as many tech youtubers flat out refuse to even touch linux. Jayztwocents was hostile about it on twitter when someone asked him.
I really like System 76, but I hope they will make more unique laptops in the future instead of using the generic enclosures like this one. It would be awesome if they worked with Framework to make compatible versions of the Framework modular laptop. It's not strictly a Linux laptop, but I would love to see Anthony review it and give his thoughts on the hardware and its potential.
I'm happy to see you reviewing these. I work on a linux station every day, so seeing these which are an option I've considered for my next laptop is quite useful.
For Linux, I just got a Lenovo Thinkpad P50 for $700 with i7 6830HQ, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, and Nvidia Quadro M200M. It came with Windows, but naturally, I installed Arch on it the day it arrived. Also tiling window managers are the best. I use i3.
I3 is amazing. I use windows because some of my games only work on windows, but damn is it hard to use that interface after experiencing the perfection that is i3

I've been a Linux/Unix power user for decades. I still love hearing anthony talk about it, it's his excitement that makes me remember all the long days/nights forcing linux to do what I want.
I don’t get it really how people in love with desktop Linux in a long term use, unless you’re a system developer. I’ve tried Ubuntu-based (I’m familiar with them on headless machines) desktop distributions like KDE Neon, clean Ubuntu, PopOS, Elementary and they all are unpleasantly unstable to use. Clean Ubuntu fails to achieve stability on a long uptimes, Unity is just extremely unresponsive and faulty on like 5th day of uptime. KDE can just look weird, broken sometimes. I understand that maybe “it’s my problem that I use nVidia hardware” but that’s just a desktop environment is unresponsive, not driver or picture! It gets even worse if you got Proton launched at least once, there’s a weird stuttering everywhere, also I had to set up pulseaudio manually to work with 24bit card but it still manages to crackle and fail sometimes. Also my 2.5G card is not shipped with latest kernel, almost any distribution faults to launch even in default mode instead of disabling it, I had to install in cli mode. After that I patched the system but it managed to livepatch it back even after blacklisting driver. Oh I would love to switch but I feel like I’ll just get WSL working. I was into it but it really wastes my time to get things working. I guess some people are just stuck with one distro and never update or something, I would be very afraid to do so after fixing issues mentioned earlier. But it’s kinda dull to get Linux, spend a lot of time to make it stable on desktop hardware and never update.

The majority of my linux in workstation comes through a virtualized install as a management platform. I use ubuntu to manage all my data center machines, my home automation and servers. Memory leaks on massive uptime machines has been the absolute bane of my existence for near 10 years.

You mention having used Unity but Unity has been dead for 5 years now. You should give it a try now because it's gotten a lot better since 2016.
@@dmitryburlakov6920 As a long time Ubuntu Linux user and a gamer, having used Gnome 2, KDE, Unity and now Gnome 3, always on NVIDIA graphics with the (unfortunately) proprietary drivers, I don't recognize any of the issues you mention. Of course I try to mostly stick to games that run on Linux natively like most of Valve's offerings, but I am known to play the occasional Windows game as well and never had bad performance or any glitching during or after starting a game with Wine or Proton. I'm not trying to say your claims are invalid, I'm just saying that gaming on Linux can actually work and be quite a pleasant experience. Like Chris I'm a professional system administrator, the only development I do is of bash scripts and Ansible playbooks and roles.

Nah the Xe drivers are legitimately still not there yet. I have the same chip in a Dell, and I love it. But its Vulkan support in particular isn't there yet. As I recall it got patched into the kernel and now we're waiting on a new version of libmesa to pass validation before it reports itself as Vulkan-supported. In their defense, Xe is a very new thing for Intel and it doesn't share much with Iris Pro, so a bit of a slow start is understandable, though still annoying.

Sometimes logos are not skippable because they're a loading screen in disguise, for example when the game has an intricate 3D diorama in the background. Otherwise you'd see all the textures and models popping in. Another reason would be being contractually obligated to show the logos.

Windows Hello is just software that offers an implementation of biometrically logging in to your machine, for example with facial recognition using a 3D near infrared camera. Howdy is the open source implementation of that for Linux, so it has nothing at all to do with Windows or Microsoft. Microsoft just has better marketing, which is why people know about the feature and will always compare similar features to it.
What do you really need? At this point installation is dead simple and the only problems that occur are related to specific hardware. Notably Nvidia GPUs require some tinkering, but there's plenty of materials already. Whatever left of "learning linux" is getting along with the terminal. Just pick a random distro and go from there. Actually pick as many ISOs as you want to test and setup a multi boot USB with a little program called Ventoy
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux,” and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
I just gave my System76 notebook away today and already miss it. It was my second favorite notebook I ever owned, my first is an OSX G4 that still works like new. It is mid range Lemur from a few years ago that I took on a bike tour from the US to Panama and it held up. I finally grew out of it though, it just had integrated graphics. I gave it to a friend's wife that just didn't have the money to buy a new computer so she could teach English to people from her home country. The worst part is she's going to have Windows installed on it, it has been Linux it's whole life. So sad. The computer was rock solid, I had a few problems and even out of warranty System76 was responsive and helped me. I would buy another System76 notebook but due to covid shortages have hit them and the notebooks I want aren't in stock.

I have seen people comment on his weight and it was not nice. I was honestly quite angry about it.
@@daan8695 That sucks. I never cared about how he looked, as his content and personality was what always stood out and mattered. He has great character, and is the reason why I actually decided to ditch Windows for good and embrace Linux in my daily life. Seriously wish he'd make a "Switching to linux for beginners" series on the official LTT channel, as many tech youtubers flat out refuse to even touch linux. Jayztwocents was hostile about it on twitter when someone asked him.
I really like System 76, but I hope they will make more unique laptops in the future instead of using the generic enclosures like this one. It would be awesome if they worked with Framework to make compatible versions of the Framework modular laptop. It's not strictly a Linux laptop, but I would love to see Anthony review it and give his thoughts on the hardware and its potential.

I'm happy to see you reviewing these. I work on a linux station every day, so seeing these which are an option I've considered for my next laptop is quite useful.

For Linux, I just got a Lenovo Thinkpad P50 for $700 with i7 6830HQ, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, and Nvidia Quadro M200M. It came with Windows, but naturally, I installed Arch on it the day it arrived. Also tiling window managers are the best. I use i3.
I3 is amazing. I use windows because some of my games only work on windows, but damn is it hard to use that interface after experiencing the perfection that is i3
@@epsteindidntkillhimself69 Best window managing experience I've had. I even wrote Bash scripts to display things like memory, CPU and GPU usage, volume, and even the local weather in the i3 bar using i3blocks. I don't expect to switch WMs, or back to a DE, ever.
About the behavior with the touchpad stop to working when you use the keyboard, that's is configurable with gnome tweaks , you can disable this behavior

Focus Kbuntu laptops, better for a workstation and come fully configured with all the ML tools and every piece of equipment is configured, and GF cards. if you’re into AI or ML. And then there’s always the game ready 13in RAZER Ultra it is better priced and well just better. These ppl make a profit on every 76 sold. If you bought one then give it to someone you don’t like, or play frisbee with the dog. btw Canadians on the east side are rude as hell to Americans and yes they are French and don’t serve beer on Sunday’s. Before RUclips they were kept away for good reason.

I've been a Linux/Unix power user for decades. I still love hearing anthony talk about it, it's his excitement that makes me remember all the long days/nights forcing linux to do what I want.
I don’t get it really how people in love with desktop Linux in a long term use, unless you’re a system developer. I’ve tried Ubuntu-based (I’m familiar with them on headless machines) desktop distributions like KDE Neon, clean Ubuntu, PopOS, Elementary and they all are unpleasantly unstable to use. Clean Ubuntu fails to achieve stability on a long uptimes, Unity is just extremely unresponsive and faulty on like 5th day of uptime. KDE can just look weird, broken sometimes. I understand that maybe “it’s my problem that I use nVidia hardware” but that’s just a desktop environment is unresponsive, not driver or picture! It gets even worse if you got Proton launched at least once, there’s a weird stuttering everywhere, also I had to set up pulseaudio manually to work with 24bit card but it still manages to crackle and fail sometimes. Also my 2.5G card is not shipped with latest kernel, almost any distribution faults to launch even in default mode instead of disabling it, I had to install in cli mode. After that I patched the system but it managed to livepatch it back even after blacklisting driver.
Oh I would love to switch but I feel like I’ll just get WSL working. I was into it but it really wastes my time to get things working. I guess some people are just stuck with one distro and never update or something, I would be very afraid to do so after fixing issues mentioned earlier. But it’s kinda dull to get Linux, spend a lot of time to make it stable on desktop hardware and never update.
@@dmitryburlakov6920 oh dude, workstation linux can be such a monster. 90% of my professional work in server based Unix and much less linux. The majority of my linux in workstation comes through a virtualized install as a management platform. I use ubuntu to manage all my data center machines, my home automation and servers.
Memory leaks on massive uptime machines has been the absolute bane of my existence for near 10 years.

@@dmitryburlakov6920 I've used Arch Linux for 6 months (I now use Fedora) and never had stability problems when using it. When was the last time you tried desktop Linux? You mention having used Unity but Unity has been dead for 5 years now. You should give it a try now because it's gotten a lot better since 2016.
@@dmitryburlakov6920 As a long time Ubuntu Linux user and a gamer, having used Gnome 2, KDE, Unity and now Gnome 3, always on NVIDIA graphics with the (unfortunately) proprietary drivers, I don't recognize any of the issues you mention. Of course I try to mostly stick to games that run on Linux natively like most of Valve's offerings, but I am known to play the occasional Windows game as well and never had bad performance or any glitching during or after starting a game with Wine or Proton. I'm not trying to say your claims are invalid, I'm just saying that gaming on Linux can actually work and be quite a pleasant experience. Like Chris I'm a professional system administrator, the only development I do is of bash scripts and Ansible playbooks and roles.
Tbh don't give a flying fuck about linux machines these days, but will genuinely watch anything with Anthony on the screen.

I can't wait to go through the older videos and i look forward to seeing more of you. i like retro games & emulators, affordable tech and single board & arm computers. But. i am a few steps below novice when it comes to actual Linux and it's many distro's.

Nah the Xe drivers are legitimately still not there yet. I have the same chip in a Dell, and I love it. But its Vulkan support in particular isn't there yet. As I recall it got patched into the kernel and now we're waiting on a new version of libmesa to pass validation before it reports itself as Vulkan-supported. In their defense, Xe is a very new thing for Intel and it doesn't share much with Iris Pro, so a bit of a slow start is understandable, though still annoying.

Google maps is integrated well and most people don't turn off autolocate. This info is saved to your device and to your Gmail; even your Bogus email if you are using it.
Even if you don't use Gmail in every site. Your browser will always store info. That info is stored every time you sign into a gmail or any email. You may destroy your browser history but that info is still stored in your Google account if you connected it.

And is dedicated to Google stuff (not used anywhere else) , my Firefox and Vivaldi block cookies and delete the few I permit every time I close the browser. My phone is as degoogled as possible.
Sometimes logos are not skippable because they're a loading screen in disguise, for example when the game has an intricate 3D diorama in the background.
Otherwise you'd see all the textures and models popping in.
Another reason would be being contractually obligated to show the logos.

Windows Hello is just software that offers an implementation of biometrically logging in to your machine, for example with facial recognition using a 3D near infrared camera. Howdy is the open source implementation of that for Linux, so it has nothing at all to do with Windows or Microsoft. Microsoft just has better marketing, which is why people know about the feature and will always compare similar features to it.

What do you really need? At this point installation is dead simple and the only problems that occur are related to specific hardware. Notably Nvidia GPUs require some tinkering, but there's plenty of materials already. Whatever left of "learning linux" is getting along with the terminal. Just pick a random distro and go from there. Actually pick as many ISOs as you want to test and setup a multi boot USB with a little program called Ventoy

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux,” and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.

I just gave my System76 notebook away today and already miss it. It was my second favorite notebook I ever owned, my first is an OSX G4 that still works like new. It is mid range Lemur from a few years ago that I took on a bike tour from the US to Panama and it held up. I finally grew out of it though, it just had integrated graphics. I gave it to a friend's wife that just didn't have the money to buy a new computer so she could teach English to people from her home country. The worst part is she's going to have Windows installed on it, it has been Linux it's whole life. So sad.
The computer was rock solid, I had a few problems and even out of warranty System76 was responsive and helped me. I would buy another System76 notebook but due to covid shortages have hit them and the notebooks I want aren't in stock.
